FARBER, Mary Pat LaRue

On Tuesday morning, August 10, 2004, Mary Pat LaRue Farber (Mrs. Neff) passed away in her home, attended by her family. She had graciously endured a four-year decline in her health from mylofibrosis. Her immediate family wishes to convey our deep sorrow at our mother's passing and our great pride in her beautiful life. She is remembered by her son, Greek C. Neff, III, of Belspring, Virginia, his wife, Beth Marshall, and their children, Hampton, Mary Beth and Becky; and by her daughter, Rebecca Neff of Haiku, Hawaii; and her children, Michael Tarrant and Mary Grace Tarrant. Ms. Farber is survived by three of her six siblings and their families, Faith Smith, Betty Wood and Carol Unsworth. She was predeceased by three brothers, J.R., Gerard Richard and William Vincent Farber; one brother-in-law, Tom Smith; and one sister-in-law, Pauline Farber. Her sisters remember Mary Pat as special to their lives, treasuring her spiritedness and her generosity. Ms. Farber's closest companions in recent years were her dogs and two cats. These perceptive creatures attended her throughout her illness, and their grief at her loss is apparent. She gave each of her grandchildren the opportunity to have and to care for pets in a loving and respectful way. Ms. Farber had a distinguished career of over forty years in education as a teacher of all grades in public schools, as an adjunct professor for the University of Virginia, as Supervisor of English for the Virginia Department of Education, and as the Director of the Office of Equal Opportunity at New River Community College. Her many assignments as a teacher reflect her diverse talents and broad education. She began by directing the Glee Club and teaching music in Wythe County Public Schools in 1947, one week before she turned twenty, and many of her students were the same age as she. She had her Associates Degree in English from Virginia Intermont College and a tremendous enthusiasm for music, for teaching and for performance. While rasing her family and teaching full time, she would earn her B.A. in English in 1961 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and her M.S. in Education in 1966, culminating her dedication to study and personal advancement with her Ed.D. in Linguistics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1977. As an outstanding student, Ms. Farber was elected to the following honor societies: Sigma Tau Delta, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Delta Kappa, and Kappa Delta Pi. "Mrs. Neff" is remembered as a superb teacher of English, Spanish, Art, and especially Drama, by her students and fellow teachers from Rural Retreat High School and Blacksburg High School. She taught with passion and high standards, and is fondly acknowledged by her students as a true inspiration. As the plaque presented to her by the sophomore English Class of BHS read, "Although we are relieved, indeed we have achieved!" One student from her early days of teaching said, "Mrs. Neff really took care of me and you don't forget some thing like that." Another, when asked "How does Mrs. Neff teach?", replied, "Oh, Mrs. Neff doesn't teach. She inspires!" Many of her former students stayed in touch, letting her know that she had affected their lives in positive ways long after they had left her classroom. She never forgot a name and enjoyed immensely recalling her students' achievements and antics. "Mrs. Neff" coached forensics and directed award-winning plays at both Rural Retreat High School and Blacksburg High School, giving her students a chance to perform at state level competitions, as well as to perform for their communities. Many of these plays were original student works. Her students will remember her for "Mountain Justice", "Like How Long Is a Minute", "The Princess Who Wouldn't Cry", "January Thaw", "Our Town", and "Arsenic and Old Lace". When she left the classroom to assist teachers as the English Supervisor for the Department of Education, "Mrs. Neff" became well known to classroom teachers for her guidance regarding the teaching of writing and of literature. She presented workshops throughout the state and nationally through Johns Hopkins University and the National Council of Teachers of English. Throughout her life, Ms. Farber showed a strong commitment to community involvement in both Rural Retreat and Blacksburg. She wrote a column for the Southwest Virginia News entitled "Wythe Wives' Wiles" which commented on everything from recipes to raising her children. She organized the Republican Women's Club of Wythe County. Along with her first husband, Dick Neff, she organized the first combined Rural Retreat Fair and Horse Show, a huge undertaking which served the community for many years. She often served as the secretary for local horse shows, was an avid member of garden clubs, and loved to play bridge. Ms. Farber served as president of the MacDowell Music Club in Rural Retreat. Perhaps the most rewarding role of her life was as grandmother to her five beloved grandchildren. Hampton, Mary Beth, Becky, Michael and Gracie wish to express their great love for their grandmother, who in turn showered them with love and affection. Whether they needed a costume for a play, a ride to school, or someone brave to teach them to drive, their grandmother was always there for them. She considered her two children and her "five beautiful grandchildren" her greatest joy in life. In 1999, Ms. Farber was crowned Mrs. Virginia Senior Citizen at the State Pageant in Roanoke, Virginia. Her talent was an original country song for which she wrote both the lyrics and the music. She went on to be named the Second Runner-up at the National Finals in Chicago, Illinois. Ms. Farber was married to W. W. Hall for a wonderful life of many years. The family graciously acknowledges his stewardship and generosity. The family wishes to express gratitude for the beautiful assistance of Carilion Hospice during the last months of our mother's life, particularly Claudia Lezama, Sherry Reed, Tom Rice, and Dr. Harry McCoy. We are truly thankful for their service to each of us, as well as to our mother.
