Orpha J. Hale, 89, of Salem, passed away Thursday, August 10, 2004. She was predeceased by her husband, W. E. "Curley" Hale; son, William "Bill" Hale, Jr.; parents, Pleasant and Chesdine Jones; brothers, Woody, Cecil and Shirley Jones; and sisters, Loma Jones, Mattie Spinks, Virginia Hodges and Pauline Jones. Surviving family include her children, David and Frances Hale, Bessie and Kenneth Duncan, Loretta Lucado, Blanche and Mervin Brower, all of Salem, Branch Hale and his special family "The Norconks" of Amherst, Ellen and Bill Teaford of Fincastle, Dianne Gray of Salem, Hugh and Rita Hale of Elliston; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; special caregiver, Veronica Mascarenas; special doctor, Gene Godwin and a very large family of special friends and children. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 13, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Chapel in Salem with the Rev. Virgil McHone officiating. Interment icon will follow at Cedar Lawn cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday, August 12, 2004 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. HAIRSTON, Thomas Leroy, Sr.

Thomas Leroy Hairston, Sr., 54, of Roanoke, departed this life on Monday, August 9, 2004 at the VA Medical Center to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was born in Roanoke, Va. on September 24, 1949. Thomas served his country for 22 years in the United States Army and was military retired. He is preceded in death by his father, George Thomas Hairston and his sister, Cecelia H. Shouvely. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Janice S. Hairston; children, Cherry Hairston, Thomas Hairston Jr., Thomasina H. Smith, Alishia Hairston and Lionell Hairston; stepdaughter, Dominique Brown; mother, Earnestine C. Hairston; two sisters, Faye H. (Vernard) Pearson and Linda H. Turner; two brothers, Joseph M. (Glenna) Hairston and Ronnie O. (Kathalene) Hairston; half sister, Mary H. Ferguson; half brothers, James Hairston and George (Bo) Hairston; devoted brother-in law, Charles (Sonya) Stokes; special friend, Leroy Edwards. A host of grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and many close friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, August 14, 2004 in the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel. Rev. Steve Norman will officiate. The interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. FREEMAN, Lewis

Lewis Freeman, 82, of Roanoke, went to be with the lord on Wednesday, August 11, 2004. He was the son of the late Floyd W. and Janie Webster Freeman. He served in WWII with the U.S. Marine Corps, and was a member of the VFW Post 1264. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Earnest, Robert, and Floyd Freeman. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Stella Craighead Freeman; children, Norma F. VanHoy and husband Bobby, JoAnn Alley and husband Harrison, and Jerry Freeman; several grandchildren, special grandson, Bobby Lee VanHoy and special granddaughter, Angela VanHoy Bentley; several great-grandchildren; one special great-grandson, Aaron Lee VanHoy; brothers, Rudolph Freeman, Kenneth Freeman; and special brother, William "Bill" Freeman; sisters, Emma Poff, Hazel Smith, and Mary Franklin; and several nieces and nephews. He was loved by all and will be deeply missed. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 14, 2004 at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem at 2 p.m. Interment icon will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Roanoke. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 13, 2004 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

DAVIS, Janet Moore

Janet, a caring person with an exuberant personality, peacefully departed this life on Sunday, August 8, 2004 at her home. She was fifty-four years of age; born on July 16, 1950 in Roanoke, Virginia. Janet was a member of Saint Paul United Methodist Church since early childhood. Those left to cherish a momentous and fulfilled life of their loved one are a devoted husband of thirty-five years, Hervey O. Davis, II; daughter, Sherri Lynn Davis; son, Hervey O. Davis, III; mother, Rose E. Moore; father, Lylburn D. (Marie) Moore, Sr.; brother, Lylburn D. (Diane) Moore, Jr.; nieces, Angela Fleming and Monica Moore; aunts, Jeanette Tucker, Joyce (Henry) Lipscomb, Jeroline (Samuel) Lewis and Lorraine Booker; uncle, Robert (Barbara) Easley; sisters-in-law, Katie (Giles) Swain, Alberta Bonds, Esther (George) Jones, Mary (Norman) Brower; brothers-in-law, Harvey (Brenda) Davis and Jesse Bolden; a host of other nieces, nephews, and cousins; Lucy Addison High School Class of 1968 and a multitude of special friends. A Celebration of Life and Thanksgiving Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 14, 2004, in the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel with the Rev. Kent L. Jeter, officiating and the Rev. D. V. Byrd, eulogist. The interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.

AUSTIN, Frank Wilson, Sr.

Austin, Frank "Pap" Wilson Sr., of New Castle, Va., went to be with the Lord on Monday, August 9, 2004. Born June 28, 1918, Frank was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years Addie C. Austin and his two sons, Frank W. Austin and George L. Austin. He leaves behind his loving and devoted grandchildren, Julie and Tony Croft, and Steve and Evelyn Austin; two great-grandchildren who he loved dearly, Brittany and Nicole Austin; daughter-in-law, Carol Austin; sister, Pauline Terry; two special nieces, Martha Mattox and Patsy Whiting; and one special nephew Ronney Price; also many more special nieces, nephews and dear friends. Mr. Austin was a devoted member of the New Castle Christian Church where he held the honor of elder emeritus. He had a deep faith in the Lord and his fellow man. He served as a proud member in the United States Army during World War II and he was also a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp or CCC's. Mr. Austin was retired from the Army Ammunition Plant. Mr. Austin always found the best qualities in everyone and he will always be an inspiration to all who knew and loved him. Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, August 12, 2004, at the New Castle Christian Church with Dr. Ernie Johnson officiating. Interment icon will follow at Huffman Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Paitsel Funeral Home, New Castle. GREEN, Paul Edward, Sr.

Paul Edward Green, Sr., 71, of Troutville, Va., passed away Tuesday, August 10, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Green was born June 8, 1933 in Roanoke, Va., to the late Edward and Wealtha Boitnott Green. Mr. Green was a retired Back Hoe Operator in the construction business. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Ronald and Donald Green. Left behind to cherish his memory are, his loving wife, Dorothy Green of the residence; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan G. and George Cundiff; step daughter, Mary Ellen Byrd; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary Green, David and Sharon Green, Mike and Regina Green, Dennis and Stephanie Green, Paul Jr. and Brenda Green, Kenneth and Nancy Green, Steve and Joyce Green, Barry and Teresa Green; step-son, Troy Booth, all of Roanoke. Also surviving are his sisters, Jean Ferguson, Roanoke, Violet and Merritt Moore, New Port News; brothers and sisters-in-law, Leonard Green, George and Irma Green, Barry and Frances Green; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Green, Ernie and Anita Hosey, Clarence and Nancy Hosey; special family members, Mike and Laurie Ballard and their children, Rose Hosey; 21 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Larry Jones and Pat Quarles with Carilion Hospice for their special care during this time. A service celebrating Paul Green's life will be held Saturday, August 14, 2004 11 a.m. at Rader Funeral Chapel, 630 Roanoke Road, Daleville, with Rev. Mike Hogan and Rick Mallory officiating. Interment icon will follow in Old Dominion cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, August 12, from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. THACKER, Constance Catherine Bright

Constance Catherine Bright Thacker, 89, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, August 10, 2004, at the Pheasant Ridge Nursing and Rehab Center in Roanoke. Mrs. Thacker was a former resident of Covington for 59 years prior to moving to Roanoke in 1999. She was born April 28, 1915, in Millboro, one of 17 children of the late Arch Leroy Bright and Leola Loan Bright. She was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing, ceramics, gardening and refinishing furniture. She was especially fond of cooking and was always proud of her Christmas fruitcakes. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Covington. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Warren Thacker in 1999; two sisters, Margaret Gillack and Pauline Brown; and four brothers, Marion Bright, Roland Bright, Nelson Bright and Warren Bright. Surviving are two daughters, Leola Pegg and her husband, Jay, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Janice Keller of Conyers, Ga.; two sons, Harry W. Thacker, Jr. and his wife, Shirley, of Deerfield, and Grayson Thacker and Ricki Hall of Roanoke; five grandchildren, Debra Cash of Towson, Md., David Keller of Marietta, Ga., Lisa Starts of Cape Coral, Fla., Michelle Floyd of Oxford, Ga., and Connie Thacker; four great-grandchildren; six sisters, Archie Gravis of Baltimore, Md., Guyotha Plecker of Millboro, Doris Belagyi of Catonsville, Md., Leona Evans of Williamsburg, Janet Armstrong and Ruthie Bright, both of Newport News; two brothers, Jack Bright of Linthicum Heights, Md. and Jim Bright of Hanover, Md.; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. John Jones officiating. Interment icon will be made in the Woodland cemetery at Millboro. Friends may pay their respects at anytime at Arritt Funeral Home. The family will receive their friends Thursday evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Arritt Funeral Home.

VAETH, Monica Agnes McDonald

Monica McDonald Vaeth, a loving and much loved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, passed away on August 8, 2004. Monica Vaeth was born in Rochester, New York on March 14, 1929, the 6th child of Bernard McDonald and Marie Ellen Swift McDonald. She resided in Rochester, New York, Tiburon, California, and Roanoke, Virginia, and traveled extensively. She is survived by her beloved husband of 55 years, Joseph J. Vaeth of Roanoke; six daughters and three sons, Karen Geyer and Stan Daniels of Aurora, Colorado, Colleen and Michael W. Schiefen of Ridgewood, New Jersey, Joseph T. and Lenora Colleran Vaeth of Incline Village, Nevada, Anne and Peter Lizdas of Merced, California, Mary and Waldemar Halbig of Mainstockheim, Germany, John F. and Jill Nelson Vaeth of Bedford, Virginia, Patricia and William Maas of Troutville, Virginia, Michael T. and Michelle Moore Vaeth of Salisbury, North Carolina, and Monica and Robert Misey of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is preceded in death by two children, Peter and Agnes. She was much loved by her twenty-seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sisters, Mary Windhauser of Rochester, New York and Anne Russell of Florida; one brother, John McDonald of Rochester, New York; and many nieces and nephews in the McDonald and Vaeth families. Her brother, William McDonald and sisters, Lucille Holdford and Jane Andreve, preceded her in death. Monica Vaeth was an active member of St. Andrew's parish. For many years, she was a volunteer in her church, PTA, hospital auxiliary and other community organizations. She was recognized as Mother of the Year in 1989 in recognition of her creation of a loving family life for her children and relatives. Monica Vaeth was an avid reader and Scrabble enthusiastic, she enjoyed crossword puzzles, gardening and travel. She participated and thoroughly enjoyed an exercise program for many years, continuing until her recent illness and was recognized for her long term commitment to physical fitness. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Andrew's on Thursday at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Bonaventure's Indian Mission and School, 25 Navarre Vista Boulevard West, P.O. Box 610, Thoreau, New Mexico 87323-0610 Arrangement by Oakey's South Chapel.

The Shepherd called home another member of his flock. Bernard Heath Coleman, Jr., 65, of Christiansburg, Virginia, left this world for everlasting life on Tuesday, August 10, 2004. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was an active member of the Max Creek Baptist Church in Hiwassee, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard H. Coleman, Sr.; two brothers, Harland and Glen Coleman; and by one sister, Inez Lanter. Surviving are his loving wife of 47 years, Alma Swecker Coleman, Christiansburg; five sons and spouses, Mark H. and Rebecca Coleman of Pulaski, Pastor Mike and Terri Coleman of Hiwassee, Mickey and Kimberly Coleman of Christiansburg, Matthew and Melissa Coleman of Christiansburg, Marty and Rebekah Coleman of Roanoke; 11 grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean and Bill Carty of Roanoke, Aline and Cecil Crockett of Salem, Fairy Stanley of Salem. The family will receive friends at the Max Creek Baptist Church in Hiwassee from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 12, 2004. A memorial celebration will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 13, 2004 at Max Creek Baptist Church with Pastor Mike Coleman officiating. A private family committal service will follow.
