Elsie Armstrong Lawhorn, 90, of Buena Vista, died Monday, August 9, 2004 in the Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center, Buena Vista. She was born April 25, 1914 in Iron Gate, daughter of the late Elmer Armstrong and Evie Leighton Armstrong Coleman. Mrs. Lawhorn retired from James Lees Carpets and operated an adult care home at her residence for many years. She was a member of the Stone Church of the Brethren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Wallace Lawhorn. She is survived by her son, Edward D. Ogden and his wife, Elizabeth, of Buena Vista; grandchildren and their spouses, Shirley and Jim McKinney of Gray, Tenn., Vickie and Mark Carter of Buena Vista, Deborah and Greg Lynn of Buena Vista, and Shane and Shelly Ogden of Blountville, Tenn.; ten great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; sister, Marie Gardner of Fairfax; brothers, Ronald Coleman of Spotsylvania and Jimmy Coleman of Pasadena, Md. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, August 13, 2004 at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Arnold Bradley officiating. Burial to follow in the Green Hill cemetery. Hattie Pasley Sears, 86, formerly of Portsmouth, Va., died Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at Richfield Recovery and Care Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, George M. Sears, her parents, Arthur C. and Susie T. Pasley, sister, Mildred Sites Hinman, and a brother, Robert Pasley. She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Portsmouth, Va. Surviving are her sister, Dorothy Harteis and husband Lee of Salem; a number of nieces and nephews including, Sue Sites Spangler of Roanoke, Jerry, Wayne, and Richard Booker all of Salem, and Brenda McClure of Vinton. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Gentle Shepherd Hospice, 4005 Electric Road, Roanoke, Va. 24014. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, August 12, 2004 in Sherwood Memorial Park by Pastor Bart Weakley. Newman Herschel Smith, 78, of Wytheville, slipped peacefully away to be with the Lord Tuesday, August 10, 2004. He was born in Saltville, Va. Mr. Smith was a very loving husband and father who will be remembered by all for his loving, caring and generous ways. Mr. Smith was retired from the U.S. Forestry Service, a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War, and attended the original Church of God. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Elizabeth Earheart Smith; a sister, Madeline Troxell; and a brother, Zonta Smith. He is survived by two step-daughters and spouses, Doris and John Minor Muncy of Wytheville, Sherry and Craig Jones of Fort Chiswell; two step-sons and spouse, Claude William and Patty Earhart, Terry Dewayne Earheart, all of Wytheville; three grandsons, Tyler Yelton, Zachary and Jacob Jones. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 12, 2004 at 8 p.m. in the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Lorton officiating. Graveside services will be held Friday, August 13, 2004 at 11 a.m. in the West End cemetery. American Legion Post #9 will conduct graveside military rites. Agnes Preston Fix Straub, 83, of Lexington, died Wednesday, August 11, 2004 in the Kendal Health Care Center. Mrs. Straub was born on March 24, 1921 in Rockbridge County, and was the last surviving child of the late William Stuart Fix and Bessie Florence Tolley Fix. She was a member of the Manly Memorial Baptist Church and was a retired secretary with Straub's Plumbing and Heating. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Waldo Straub, Jr.; and a daughter, Evelyn Straub Duff. Mrs. Straub is survived by one daughter, Bobbie Jo Straub Kober and husband, Ken, of Grove City, Ohio; six grandchildren, Stephanie Brads and husband, Darrell, W. Jonathan Duff, W. Jason Duff and wife, Tomi, all of Lexington, Dan J. Kober, Tim E. Kober, Kevin M. Kober, all of Grove City, Ohio; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 14, 2004 at the Harrison Funeral Chapel with Dr. J. Michael Wilkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Timber Ridge ARP cemetery. Mr. John Oliver Barton, 84, of 8201 Cedarbrook Drive, Charlotte, N.C., died Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at his home. Mr. Barton was born in Lafayette, Virginia, on December 8, 1919 to the late William D. and Essie Dock Spangler Barton. He served in the U.S. Air Force, and was retired from Fink's Jewelers in Charlotte. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Fender Barton; two sisters, Thelma Baird of Suffolk, Va., and Mildred Turner of Roanoke, Va.; special caregiver, Randall Gantt; special friends, Willard, Jessie and Francis Gantt, all of Charlotte; several nieces and nephews also survive. A graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, August 13, 2004 at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church cemetery at Piney Creek. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. ENYART, Helen Roberta
Helen (Holly) Roberta Enyart, 68, of Roanoke, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, went in peace from her home to be with Christ on August 7, 2004. Her family was at her bedside. She was raised in Cheverly, Maryland. As a young girl, she studied dance. Before college, she became a member of the New York City Rockettes. While her father was stationed as a United States Air Force base commander in Chaumont, France, Holly lived with her family there and attended the University of Maryland extension in Munich, Germany where she studied art history. In France she met and married
William (Bill) E. Enyart as he was serving in the United States Air Force as a fighter pilot stationed in Chaumont. Bill and Holly were married
there in a French civil service followed by a Church wedding. As they began their lives together soon also they began their family. Returning to the United States later that year, they lived in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Bill's native state of Ohio. In 1970, the family moved to Roanoke. Throughout their lives, they have been blessed by a myriad of wonderful friends, including those of their children. Holly is survived by her husband, Bill, of 48 years and their children and grandchildren, Kathy and Jim Chandler and their daughter, Eloise, of Roanoke, Bill and Lynn Enyart and their children, Billy and Lauren, of Houston, Texas, Lisa and Steve Sermonet and their daughters, Stephanie and Sarah, of Brentwood, Tenn., and Bob and Caitlin Enyart and their children, Crawford and Georgia, of Roanoke. Also her sister, Joan and Dinks Lloyd of Greenbelt, Md.; and her brothers, Bob and Susan Thompson. and Rick and Ellen Thompson of Clermont, Florida; as well as many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Vivienne Janet and Robert Davison Thompson. Holly had many interests, but family, especially her children, she considered her greatest accomplishment. She was a graduate of Virginia Western Community College and active in the Virginia Herb Society. She and Bill shared a love of antiques and for many years Holly had her own business, Finders Keepers. In May of 2000, she graduated from Hollins University with a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Creative Writing. Her senior thesis was an in-depth study of the art of her great uncle, Benson Bond Moore. The family would like to thank all of Holly's friends and all of our life-long friends who supported her and us through-out her journey. Our thanks also to Adventa Hospice and especially for the sincere care, commitment and guidance through each stage of decision making by Dr. Suzan Merten. A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Deborah H. Grady H. Fletcher, 81, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, August 10, 2004. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Air Force. Grady was a member of Windsor Hills United Methodist Church, and was preceded in death by his parents, Grady S. Fletcher and Nannie Blackburn Fletcher, and also by one brother, James Fletcher. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Louise McMillan Fletcher; two daughters, Diane and husband, John Vaught, of Wilmington, Delaware, and Elaine and husband, Charles Cayton, of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Stephanie and husband, Richard Naver, of Bel Air, Maryland, Michael Vaught of Wilmington, Delaware; Emily Tuttle and Andrew Tuttle, both of Roanoke; one great-grandson, Joshua; and one sister, Alene and husband, MacDaniel Harless, of Hillsville, Va. A memorial celebration will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, August 12, 2004 at Windsor Hills United Methodist Church with Dr. Bud Davis officiating. Annie Jane Hinkle, 80, of Blue Ridge, Va., formerly from Scott Depot, W. Va., went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, August 10,2004 after a short battle with cancer. She, along with her husband, Cleo, are members of Colonial Baptist Church of Blue Ridge, Va. and former charter members of Faith Missionary Baptist Church, St. Albans, W. Va. for 35 years. She is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Keyes of Biloxi, Mississippi; brother, Leland Milton Keyes, Jr.; granddaughter, Westa Nicole Holland; and great-grandson, Carson Joseph Smith. Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Cleo Hinkle; four daughters, Jackie Point and her husband, Robert, of Blue Ridge, Va., Kathy Smith and her husband, Larry, of Chester, Va., Bobbie White and her husband, Jerry, of Magnolia, Ky., and Mary Ellen Holland and her husband, Gary, of Cloverdale, Va.; eleven grandchildren, Mollie Jackson, Rob Point, Jr., Margie Fields, Carson Smith, Jane Ann Taggart, Eric Smith, Michelle Rivera, Amanda White, Jason White, Matthew Holland, and Christina Holland; and fourteen great-grandchildren. Lillian Rose Higgenbotham McKinney, 89, of Salem passed away Saturday, August 7, 2004. Formerly of Oceana, W. Va., she moved to Salem in 1992. She was a retired school teacher of first grade elementary, teaching for 35 years, and a member of the United Methodist Church in Oceana, W. Va. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Haze McKinney. Surviving family include a son, Lloyd George McKinney and wife, Patricia; step-daughter, Nancy Lester and husband, Charles; brother, Charlie Higgenbotham; sisters, Mary Bennett, Hazel Adkisson and Jessie Houchins; grandchildren, Dianne Dunivan, Sam and Elizabeth McKinney, Dameon Lester, Amy Kagel and husband, Todd. Lillian chose to donate her body to science. A service will be held with family and friends at a later date. The family requests that donations be made in her name to a favorite charity.
