COLLINS, Haven
Haven Collins, 88, of Hollow Road in Pembroke, died peacefully at his home Sunday evening, August 8, 2004. Born in Giles County on April 19, 1916, he was a son of the late Strother and Fannie Collins Williams. He was retired from National Gypsum Co. as a miner at Goldbond. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Loraine Merrix Collins; sons, William Haven Collins and Randy Collins; brothers, Fonzi Collins, Frank Jr. Williams, David and Daniel Collins; and sister, Mary Atkins, Florence Atkins and Margie Myers. He leaves to cherish his memory his sons and daughters-in-law, Jackie and Patty Collins of Pembroke, Danny Dale and Ginger Collins of Pearisburg; daughters, Barbara Perdue of Pearisburg, and Brenda Mason of Modoc, S.C.; brother, Tommy Williams of Pembroke; sister, Fannie Myers of Pembroke; nine grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at 11 a.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke with Pastor Shahn Wilburn and Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Lebanon Church cemetery at Hoges Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

Marie S. Journell, "Mumsie", 85, of Nashville, Tenn., and formerly of Giles County, died Tuesday morning, August 10, 2004 at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville. Born in Giles Co. on May 15, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Pearl and Minnie White Strouth. She was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Chapman Journell, a granddaughter, Donna Anderson Lumbert, sisters, Anna Croy, Eunice Harless, and brothers, Paul, John W. and Chester Strouth. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Patricia Anderson and husband Andy of Knoxville, Tenn., Michael Journell and wife Susie of Pearisburg, Joey Journell and wife Diane of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, Eugene Strouth and wife Alice of Akron, Ohio; grandchildren, Russ Journell, Jeannie Lafon, Chad Journell, Travis Journell; great-grandchildren, Keree, Chelsey, Jessie and Cati, Alaina and Alex, Kensey and Chase and special children in her life, Jamie and Derek Snider, Eric and Justin Vaught. Memorial services will be conducted Thursday evening at 8 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke. Rodney Earl (Bud) Byer, 90, of Edgewood Drive, Smithfield, died Monday, August 9, 2004, at Tandem Health Care of Windsor. He was a native of Allegheny County, Va. and a retired factory worker from Slatrini. He previously worked as a manager of Pilot Gas Station, Westvaco, and had been an entrepreneur in the grocery business. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. His wife, Lee Ella Ellinger Byer and a sister, Rebecca Smith, precede Mr. Byer in death. His survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Sizemore and her husband, Sam, of Smithfield; a son, David Byer and his wife, Dreama, of Roanoke; three sisters-in-law; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends, 12:30 p.m. and until service time in Arritt Funeral Home, 1102 S. Highland Avenue, Covington, Va. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, August 12, 2004 in the funeral home, with Pastor John Bauswell officiating. Burial will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park, Covington, Va. EDWARDS, Lilian Cooke
Mrs. Lilian Cooke Edwards, of Winston-Salem, formerly of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, August 7, 2004, at the age of 84. Her funeral service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Wytheville on Wednesday, August 11, 2004, at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the Church. Burial will follow at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 12, 2004 in Riverside cemetery in Courtland, Va. A native of Canton, N.C., she was the daughter of Hugh and Lilly Cooke. She graduated from the Piedmont School of Nursing in Atlanta, Ga., and did postgraduate work at the College of William and Mary. Her life-long work of helping others began as a Public Health Nurse in Newport News, Va. She was later with the Wythe County Department of Social Services and also served as community volunteer for a variety of organizations. Mrs. Edwards was a long time member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Wytheville, where her husband of 42 years, William A. Edwards, served as Rector until his death in 1988. More recently, she was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem. Her daughter, Laura Edwards Johnson and husband, Bob, of Statesville, N.C.; a son, William Kinsland Edwards and wife, Trisha, of Greensboro, N.C., survive her. Four grandchildren, Briggs Edwards and Andrew Edwards of Greensboro, Schorr Johnson of Raleigh, N.C., and Elizabeth Johnson of Palo Alto, Calif., also survive her. Her brother, George H. Cooke of Lugoff, S.C., died in 2000. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Wythe Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 292, Wytheville, Va. or Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 600 West Ridge Rd., Wytheville, Va. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is assisting the family.

Hazel Virginia Meador Barger, 81, of Vinton, passed away Monday, August 9, 2004. She was born April 28, 1923, the daughter of the late John Willie Meador and Annie Ada Williamson Meador. Her husband, Emory T. Barger, Sr., preceded her in death. Also, two sons, Emory T. (Tommy) Barger, Jr., and John Alexander (Johnny) Barger preceded her. She retired after 10 years from Family Services of Roanoke. Surviving are her five children, Virginia B. (Bee) Fisher and husband, Timothy of Pulaski, Va., Sandra Sandkulla and husband, Harold of Yorktown, Va., Gary Barger of Vinton, Lois Lynch and husband, Mark of Roanoke, Van Barger and wife, Nanette of Mosley, Va.; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Estelle Spradlin of Roanoke, Alice Kidd of Vinton, Margaret Adams of Roanoke; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Terry Henry and Mark Leftwich.
