CRAIGHEAD, Helen Barnett
Helen Barnett Craighead, 88, of Fincastle, went home to be with the Lord, Friday afternoon, August 6, 2004 at the Brian Center Nursing Home. She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mattie Barnett; her husband, Arthur Craighead; three brothers, William, Warner, and Robert Barnett; and one sister,, Julia Barnett Williams. She is survived by sisters-in-law, Juanita Welch Barnett of Fincastle, Louise Barnett Hairston of Roanoke, and Rena Mae Owens of Blue Ridge; two nephews, Warner Chuck Barnett of Fincastle and Jeffrey W. Barnett of Roanoke; four nieces, Tracy Jones of Cantonsville, Md., Lisa Barnett of Roanoke, Veda Barnett of Roanoke, and Andrea Barnett of Chesapeake; several greatnieces and nephews and cousins; as well as her church family of The Lily of the Valley Baptist Church, Springwood and many cherished good neighbors and friends. She was a devoted and faithful member of her church. Her bright smile will be missed by all who know her. The family would like to especially thank the staff at the Brian Center for all their sincere and loving kindness they provided during her residency there. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Rader Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Harvey L. Saunders officiating. Interment

ENYART, Helen Roberta
Helen (Holly) Roberta Enyart, 68, of Roanoke, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, went in peace from her home to be with Christ on August 7, 2004. Her family was at her bedside. She was raised in Cheverly, Maryland. As a young girl, she studied dance. Before college, she became a member of the New York City Rockettes. While her father was stationed as a United States Air Force base commander in Chaumont, France, Holly lived with her family there and attended the University of Maryland extension in Munich, Germany where she studied art history. In France she met and married
William (Bill) E. Enyart as he was serving in the United States Air Force as a fighter pilot stationed in Chaumont. Bill and Holly were married
there in a French civil service followed by a Church wedding. As they began their lives together soon also they began their family. Returning to the United States later that year, they lived in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Bill's native state of Ohio. In 1970, the family moved to Roanoke. Throughout their lives, they have been blessed by a myriad of wonderful friends, including those of their children. Holly is survived by her husband, Bill, of 48 years and their children and grandchildren, Kathy and Jim Chandler and their daughter, Eloise, of Roanoke, Bill and Lynn Enyart and their children, Billy and Lauren, of Houston, Texas, Lisa and Steve Sermonet and their daughters, Stephanie and Sarah, of Brentwood, Tenn., and Bob and Caitlin Enyart and their children, Crawford and Georgia, of Roanoke. Also her sister, Joan and Dinks Lloyd of Greenbelt, Md.; and her brothers, Bob and Susan Thompson. and Rick and Ellen Thompson of Clermont, Florida; as well as many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Vivienne Janet and Robert Davison Thompson. Holly had many interests, but family, especially her children, she considered her greatest accomplishment. She was a graduate of Virginia Western Community College and active in the Virginia Herb Society. She and Bill shared a love of antiques and for many years Holly had her own business, Finders Keepers. In May of 2000, she graduated from Hollins University with a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Creative Writing. Her senior thesis was an in-depth study of the art of her great uncle, Benson Bond Moore. The family would like to thank all of Holly's friends and all of our life-long friends who supported her and us through-out her journey. Our thanks also to Adventa Hospice and especially for the sincere care, commitment and guidance through each stage of decision making by Dr. Suzan Merten. Wendell Wayne Hall, 59, of Vinton, passed away Sunday, August 8, 2004. He was a lifelong member of Waverly Place Baptist Church and long time employee of RevCar Fasteners and a member of the Roanoke Rose Society. He was predeceased by his parents, Kermit R. and Uneita Tingler Hall, and father-in-law, Lee D. Austin. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Patricia A. Hall; daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and H. Preston Driscoll, Jr.; grandchildren, Jeremiah and Marlena Renee Driscoll, H. P., III and Robin Driscoll, and Katherine and John Johnson; great-grandchildren, Jordan and Darius Johnson, and Sadie Driscoll, all of Roanoke; mother-in-law, Katherine B. Austin of Vinton; brother-in-law, Richard L. (Becky) Austin of Thaxton; his beloved parrot, Kelly. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Vinton Chapel at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 10, 2004, with the Rev. Reed Ness officiating. Burial will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. John W. Mello, 73, went to his Heavenly home on Sunday, July 25, 2004 in Naples, Fla. John was born on December 13, 1930 in Dartmouth, Mass. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He will be greatly missed by his children, Ann Marie Findley (Ron), John W. Mello, Jr. (Pam), Jane Carol Jacintho. He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Tom Jacintho, Jr., Crystal Mello, Sarah Jacintho and Adam Clapp; and his great-grandchild, Shayla Mello. POWERS, Claude George
Claude George Powers, 102, of Salem, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 8, 2004 after an extended illness. He was born in Crawfordsville, Indiana and went on to graduate from Life Bible College in Los Angeles, California in 1933. In his early years, he served as an evangelist and in later years, he served as pastor of various Four Square Gospel Churches in Illinois, Ohio, North Carolina, and Virginia. He retired in 1964, and in his retirement he remained active in the church and his community, working and serving well into his eighties. His surviving family include his wife Hester Powers; sons and daughter-in-law Will and Mary Powers and John Powers; daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Dwight Jones; grandchildren, Mirinda Reynolds, Megan Reuter, Mariel Powers, Meris Powers, Rachel Talbott, Sarah Schmucker, Mary Jones, and John Jones; great-grandchildren, Mikaila Reynolds, Barrett Reynolds, Zachary Powers, and many extended family and friends. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Bethel Assembly of God, with Pastor Burt Franks officiating. Interment

James Archie Stoots Sr., 78, of Troutville, went to be with the Lord Monday, August 9, 2004. He was retired from the N&W Railway and a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army and had received two Purple Hearts. He is preceded in death by two sons, James Archie, Jr. and Rickey Stoots. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Janie Grubb Stoots; two sons, Gary Stoots and wife Patty, of Marion, Ronnie Stoots of Troutville; two grandchildren, Kevin Stoots of Mobile, Ala., Kathy Blevins of Marion; four great-grandchildren, Philip and Kalyn Blevins, Myles and Connor Stoots; sister, Dorothy Poston of Marion; brother-in-law, Douglas Grubb of Marion; and a number of nieces and nephews. WRIGHT, June Martin
June Martin Wright, 72, of Salem, died Friday, August 6, 2004. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert Wayne Wright, her parents, Raymond K. and Margaret L. Martin and a brother, Lawrence R. Martin. Her surviving family include her loving husband, George R. Wright; daughter, Patricia Wright; son, Mike Wright and his friend Rai Orszak; grandson, T. Jason Gusler; brother, Ken Martin; sisters, Janice Stultz, Patty Ramsey; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was described by those who knew her as a person who chose to live a simple life, was a mediator who was creative, caring, spunky, yet dignified in every aspect of her life. She was an entrepreneur who owned and operated Gemini Hair Graphics in Vinton and was a former employee of Vinton Weaving Mill. She supplied the community with turbans for cancer victims, quilted a lovingly hand-tied lap quilt for St. Judes. She made commemorative flags and decorative wood crafts and was a cook extraordinaire. She participated in many parades, showing horses and even competed as a barrel racer. Special thanks to Lekeisha Hash, John Fridley, Joey Burks and Good Samaritan Hospice for their loving care. Mrs. Joan Carolyn King, 61, of Ferrum, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 7, 2004. Joan's greatest accomplishment was being a loving and devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend. Joan was the wife of sixteen years to George King, Sr. of Ferrum. She was the daughter of Ocie Stultz of Ferrum and the late Tyler F. Stultz. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Mark Richards. She was mother to daughters, Vickie Richards and husband, Mark of Bassett, Kristen Mills of Patrick Springs, Amy Amaya of Rocky Mount, and Pam Savage of Rocky Mount. She was stepmother to Mary McAlexander and husband Danny of Bassett, Carol Crouse and husband Terry, Brenda Bolinger, Sherry Summers, George (Dink) King, Jr., and Scott King and wife Becky, all of Maryland. She was sister to Alma Southard and husband, William of Martinsville, S. Eugene Stultz and wife Joyce of Florida, Helen Faye Sumner of Hagerstown, Md., Gary Stultz of Ferrum, Donna Dalton and husband, Robert of Mt. Airy, Md. She was the grandmother to fifteen grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Haven Collins, 88, of Hollow Road in Pembroke, died peacefully at his home Sunday evening, August 8, 2004. Born in Giles County on April 19, 1916, he was a son of the late Strother and Fannie Collins Williams. He was retired from National Gypsum Co. as a miner at Goldbond. He was preceded in death by sons, William Haven Collins and Randy Collins; brothers, Fonzi Collins, Frank Jr. Williams, David and Daniel Collins; sisters, Mary Atkins, Florence Atkins and Margie Myers. Leon Doyle Hensdill, 63, of Radford, passed away Sunday, August 8, 2004. He was born in Russell County, the son of Arnold and Eula Childress Hensdill. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John David Hensdill. He retired after 38½ years of service as a computer programmer with ALTESS, formerly known as RDAISA, Department of the Army. BURCH, Jack Norman
Mr. Jack Norman Burch, 81, of 1190 S. Mound Avenue, Covington, died Friday, August 6, 2004. He was the husband of Sarah Lawrence Burch. Mr. Burch was born December 24, 1922 in Covington, the son of W. Warner and Bessie C. Burch. He served his country as a staff sergeant during World War II in the United States Army Air Corps 385 Bombardment Group stationed in England. He was a left-waist gunner on a B-17, "The Flying Fortress". On his 18th mission outside of Berlin, his plane was shot down and he was taken prisoner of war for one year before being liberated while on an eighty day death march. Mr. Burch was a past Commander of American Legion Post 4, Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign War, and the Roanoke Valley Chapter of the Ex-prisoners of War. In addition to his wife of fifty-seven years, Sarah Lawrence Burch, he is survived by a daughter, Sharon B. Clarke and husband, Thomas of Richmond; a son, David J. Burch and wife, Donna, of Harrisonburg; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral service will be conducted at First Presbyterian Church, Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at 11 a.m. Interment

EDWARDS, Lilian Cooke
Mrs. Lilian Cooke Edwards, of Winston-Salem, formerly of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, August 7, 2004, at the age of 84. Her funeral service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Wytheville on Tuesday, August 10, 2004, at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the Church. Burial will follow at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 12, 2004 in Riverside cemetery in Courtland, Va. A native of Canton, N.C., she was the daughter of Hugh and Lilly Cooke. She graduated from the Piedmont School of Nursing in Atlanta, Ga., and did postgraduate work at the College of William and Mary. Her life-long work of helping others began as a Public Health Nurse in Newport News, Va. She was later with the Wythe County Department of Social Services and also served as community volunteer for a variety of organizations. Mrs. Edwards was a long time member of ST. John's Episcopal Church in Wytheville, where her husband of 42 years, William A. Edwards, served as Rector until his death in 1988. More recently, she was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem. Her daughter, Laura Edwards Johnson and husband, Bob, of Statesville, N.C.; a son, William Kinsland Edwards and wife, Trisha, of Greensboro, N.C., survive her. Four grandchildren, Briggs Edwards and Andrew Edwards of Greensboro, Schorr Johnson of Raleigh, N.C., and Elizabeth Johnson of Palo Alto, Calif., also survive her. Her brother, George H. Cooke of Lugoff, S.C., died in 2000. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Wythe Habitat for Humanity, P.O.
