Ronald Dean Stone, 61, of Austinville, passed away Sunday, August 8, 2004 in Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. He was the son of the late Hobert and Gertude Stone, and is survived by his wife, Goldie Vaughn Stone, of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Jack Nester of Austinville, Trudy and D.C. Cobler of Glade Springs, Va.; sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Becky Stone of Austinville, Jeff and Ann Stone of Austinville; brothers and sister-in-law, Herbert Stone of Austinville, Tom and Reba Stone of Max Meadows; sisters and brothers-in-law, Evelyn and Hubert Rose of Augusta, Georgia, Virginia and Jack King of Max Meadows, Myrtle and Virgil Peverall of Salem, and Bertha and Troy Marshall of Austinville; sisters-in-law, Nadine Stone of Hillsville and Juanita Stone of Austinville; and grandchildren, Randy, Kyle, Hobie, Jarred, Sarah, Courtney, Brittany and Bryce. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clifton Stone. He was a former employee of Burlington and Wayne-Tex Industries. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at 3 p.m. at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville. Mr. Jack King and Rev. Neil Edison will officiate. Georgia Walker Adams, 90, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, August 7, 2004. She was a member, and leader, of Melrose Baptist Church since 1925, and was the former owner of Colonial Beauty Shoppe, Inc. Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Richard J. Adams, and a sister, Mrs. Eliza Caroline Hodges. Georgia is survived by her son, Richard Edward "Ed" Adams, of Greenville, N.C.; and grandchildren, Shelly A. Lide, of Matthews, N.C., Richard E. Adams, Jr., of Flower Mound, Texas and Kirk Adams, of York, S.C. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Anna, Jim, Eddie, Meghan, and Alex Adams, Michelle and Stephanie Lide. Surviving her also are two sisters, Mrs. Jessyee Ramsey, of Roanoke, and Mrs. Dixie Tucker, of Vinton. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Melrose Baptist Church with Rev. BATSON, Katina Kay Bean
Katina Kay Bean Batson, 56, of Buchanan passed away suddenly Thursday, August 5, 2004 at her home. Katina was born on December 27, 1947 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her father, Clarence Bean; her step-father, William Finney; and her brother, Gary Bean. She was employed at Starmount Beauty Salon for over twenty years, the last several, she was the owner. Katina was the type of person who you could talk to when you were down and out, and she could always bring a smile to your face and make you laugh. She will be greatly missed by the many who knew and loved her. Surviving are her mother, Pearl Finney of Friendship Manor; her loving sister-in-law, Linda Bean of Vinton; and many devoted and caring friends. Eleonore Bullins, 73, passed away Thursday, August 5, 2004 at her home in Roanoke, Virginia. A former resident of Elizabethtown, she was a retired bookkeeper for Power Train Companies, and formerly a member of Saint Ambrose Catholic Church in Cecilia. She was born on May 29, 1931 in Munich, Germany. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sergeant Henry Bruce Bullins, and her mother, Sophie Blatney. Survivors include three daughters, Doris Bullins of Roanoke, Va., Kelly Barron and her husband, Major General William E. Barron of Elizabethtown, Ky., Karen Taylor and her husband, Dean Taylor of Elizabethtown, Ky.; three granddaughters, Krissy Sisk, Deana Taylor, Dana Taylor; and two great-grandchildren, Kirsten Sisk and Gavin Taylor Smith. Funeral series will be held Tuesday, August 10, 2004, 2 p.m. at Manakee Funeral Home in Elizabethtown, Ky. with the Rev. Stan Osborne officiating. Burial will be at the Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens on Monday, August 9, 2004 at 12 noon. Mrs. Carter is also preceded in death by her husband, Frank W. Carter, one son, James C. Carter, two brothers, Paul Hill and John Clark, and two sisters, Myrtle Johnson, and Lillian Powell. She is survived by two sons, Taylor W. Carter and Frank E. Carter; two daughters, Bessie P. Arnold, and Donna Kreutzberg; and three daughters-in-law, Gloria Carter, Pat Millehan, and Phyllis Carter. Mrs. Carter is also survived by eight grandchildren, Kimberly Gibson, James T. Carter, Stacy Carter, Jay Carter, Kevin Carter, David Arnold, Edward Arnold, and John Glisiple; and nine great-grandchildren, Frank Arnold, Jr., Alidia Arnold, Dalton Arnold, Kaleb Carter, Kollin Carter, Kayla Gibson, Chelsea Sink, James Carter, and Ryan Carter. Helen Barnett Craighead, 88, of Fincastle, went home to be with the Lord, Friday afternoon, August 6, 2004 at the Brian Center Nursing Home. She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mattie Barnett; her husband, Arthur Craighead; two brothers, William Warner and Robert Barnett; and one sister,, Julia Barnett Williams. She is survived by sisters-in-law, Juanita Welch Barnett of Fincastle, Louise Barnett Hairston of Roanoke, and Rena Mae Owens of Blue Ridge; two nephews, Warner Chuck Barnett of Fincastle and Jeffrey W. Barnett of Roanoke; four nieces, Tracy Jones of Cantonsville, Md., Lisa Barnett of Roanoke, Veda Barnett of Roanoke, and Andrea Barnett of Chesapeake; several nieces and nephews and cousins; as well as her church family of The Lily of the Valley Baptist Church, Springwood and many cherished good neighbors and friends. She was a devoted and faithful member of her church. Her bright smile will be missed by all who know her. The family would like to especially thank the staff at the Brian Center for all their sincere and loving kindness they provided during her residency there. Genevra S. Crotts, 86, of Roanoke, formerly of Siler City, N.C., passed away Friday, August 6, 2004. She was the widow of Charles R. Crotts. She was born in Bedford County, January 23, 1917 and was a 1938 graduate of Ferrum College. Mrs. Crotts enjoyed spending time writing poetry. She is preceded in death by a son, Charles R. Crotts, Jr.; three sisters, Lavonia Snydecker, Verna Fulp, and Louise Holdren; and six brothers, Wilbur Simmons, Carlton Simmons, Homer Simmons, Sr., Willis Simmons, Avis Simmons, and Travis Simmons. Robert Wayne "Bob" Hammond, 66, of Salem, was transferred from his earthly home to his heavenly home to forever be with his Lord on Saturday, August 7, 2004. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie Irene and George L. Hammond. He leaves behind his loving wife and devoted partner of 42 years, Alma Beamer Hammond. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Paul Hambrick of Roanoke; brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Blanche Hammond, Parris and Lois Hammond, William R. and Glenna Hammond, all of Salem; his brother-in-law and wife, Edwin and Hazel Wilson of Wytheville; sister-in-law and husband, Vista and Kenneth Alderman, Hillsville; sister-in-law, Helen Beamer of Hillsville. He will be greatly missed by a host of nieces and nephews and special friends, Bishop Larry and Margaret Lykens. Bob was a Salem native and lifelong resident who contributed generously to his community. He was a devout Christian and outstanding member of the Family Worship Center. POWERS, Claude George
Claude George Powers, 102, of Salem, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 8, 2004 after an extended illness. He was born in Crawfordsville, Indiana and went on to graduate from Life Bible College in Los Angeles, California in 1933. In his early years, he served as an evangelist and in later years, he served as pastor of various Four Square Gospel Churches in Illinois, Ohio, North Carolina, and Virginia. He retired in 1964, and in his retirement he remained active in the church and his community, working and serving well into his eighties. His surviving family include his wife Hester Powers; sons and daughter-in-law Will and Mary Powers and John Powers; daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Dwight Jones; grandchildren, Mirinda Reynolds, Megan Reuter, Mariel Powers, Meris Powers, Rachel Talbott, Sarah Schmucker, Mary Jones, and John Jones; great-grandchildren, Mikaila Reynolds, Barrett Reynolds, Zachary Powers, and many extended family and friends. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Bethel Assembly of God, with Pastor Burt Franks officiating. Interment

He graduated from Newman High School and attended business college for two years. He served in both WWII in Europe and the Korean Conflict. He worked with the "Youth on their Own Center" and started the special needs fund to help high school students graduate. He is survived by sisters, Sally Rollins of Milton, Mass. and Anne Ranhoff of Pompret Center, Conn.; niece, Karen Lamb and husband, Donald; and numerous other nieces and nephews. June Martin Wright, 72, of Salem, died Friday, August 6, 2004. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert Wayne Wright, her parents, Raymond K. and Margaret L. Martin and a brother, Lawrence R. Martin. Her surviving family include her loving husband, George R. Wright; daughter, Patricia Wright; son, Mike Wright and his friend Rai Orszak; grandson, T. Jason Gusler; brother, Ken Martin; sisters, Janice Stultz, Patty Ramsey; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was described by those who knew her as a person who chose to live a simple life, was a mediator who was creative, caring, spunky, yet dignified in every aspect of her life. She was an entrepreneur who owned and operated Gemini Hair Graphics in Vinton and was a former employee of Vinton Weaving Mill. She supplied the community with turbans for cancer victims, quilted a lovingly hand-tied lap quilt for St. Judes. She made commemorative flags and decorative wood crafts and was a cook extraordinaire. She participated in many parades, showing horses and even competed as a barrel racer. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m.Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem. Interment
