Pat Poff Cassell, 54, of Rocky Mount, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 5, 2004. She was preceded in death by her father, Charlie O. Poff and her sister, Jeania Marie Wilson. She was loved by all and will be deeply missed. Surviving are her husband of 33 years, James H. Cassell; children, Jacody J. Cassell and wife, Denise, Jada and Ben Sanders; grandchildren, Brai and Bree Cassell, Adava Johnson, Ryder Sanders; her mother, Frances Poff; sister, Janice; brother, Randy; mother and father-in-law, James and Euna Cassell; two half-sisters, Peggy and Gertie; one half-brother, Alvin; several nieces and nephews with special mention Skylar, Keily, India, Princess, and Nova. Services will be at Oakey's South Chapel 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 10, 2004. The Rev. Sam Belisle will officiate. Interment icon will follow at 2 p.m. in the Cassell Family cemetery, Patrick County, Va. The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday. DOOLEY, Nancy Boatwright Hatcher

Nancy Boatwright Hatcher Dooley, 82, of Bedford, died Sunday, August 8, 2004, in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was born October 11, 1921 in Lynchburg, a daughter of the late Col. John Reuben Boatwright, Sr. and Nancy Louise Loyd Boatwright. Nancy was a member of Bedford Presbyterian Church and was a former teacher in the Bedford County Public Schools for many years. In addition to her parents, her husbands, E.C. Hatcher and Tom Dooley and her brother, John R. Boatwright, Jr., preceded her in death. She is survived by her children, Joan Hatcher Scott of Childs, Md. and John Robert Bishop of Charlotte, N.C. and two grandchildren, Elizabeth R. Crawford and Ashton Bishop. Funeral services will be conducted at the graveside at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 10, 2004, in Greenwood cemetery with the Rev. Joseph S. Gaston officiating. HAWTHORNE, Mary Joyce Beazley

Mary Joyce Beazley Hawthorne, 78, of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, August 4, 2004 in Charlottesville. Born in Disputanta on June 24, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Lattimer and Bertha Beazley and was the beloved wife of Francis Drewry Hawthorne who preceded her in death in 2001. Mrs. Hawthorne was a member of Trinity Methodist Church in Disputanta. She is survived by one daughter, Connie Jo Miller and her husband, Ron, of Ruckersville; one son, Allen Reed Hawthorne of Bogota, Columbia, South America; one sister, Almyra Burrow of Salem; and two grandchildren, Cory and Brent Miller. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Teague Chapel. Interment icon will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem, Va. The family will receive friends 1 to 2 p.m. on Wednesday prior to the service at the Teague Funeral Home, 2260 Ivy Road, Charlottesville, Va. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to the American Lung Association of Virginia, 39 Southgate Court, #102, Harrisonburg, Va. 22801.

FRALEY, Chester, R., USAF (Ret.)

Chester R. Fraley, USAF Retired, 81, of 1924 Laurel Fork Road, Boone, died Saturday morning, August 7, 2004 at home. He was born November 16, 1922 in Eadston, Kentucky, a son of Boone and Viola Fraley. He was a member of Brushy Fork Baptist Church, where he had served as a Sunday School teacher and Brotherhood Director. He was employed by Farmers Hardware for 21 years. He served his country from 1939 until 1962. Sergeant Fraley was with the 50th Field Artillery Battalion throughout WWII, having accompanied them to Iceland in February, 1942, to England in October, 1943, to Northern Ireland in December, 1943, and to France in June 1944. He participated in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Ardenness, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was assigned to the 29th Communications Squadron, Langley Field, Virginia, where he served as Chief Clerk and Sergeant Major until his reassignment to the Royal Air Force Station, Schulthorpe, England, in April 1949. While at Schulthorpe, he served as Base Sergeant Major. He was reassigned to the 508th Strategic Fighter Wing, Albany, Georgia, as Wing Sergeant Major in July 1952, was reassigned to Headquarters Civil Air Patrol, USAF with permanent duty station in St. Joseph, Missouri, as an advisor to the Missouri Wing, Civil Air Patrol in 1955. He was assigned to the Southern Air Material Area, Pacific (Philippine Islands) in 1959 as Assistant for Plans and Programs, was assigned as First Sergeant of the 627th Radar Squadron in September 1961, Crystal Spring's Air Force Station, Mississippi. He retired from military service May 31, 1962. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart with 1 oak Leaf Cluster; European-AfricanMiddle Eastern Campaign Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal with 5 Bronze Loops, and the Air Force Longevity Service Award with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mrs. Mary Frances Harmon Fraley; two daughters, Diane Sherwood and husband, Joe, of Vilas, N.C., and Judy Fairchild and husband, David, of Fleetwood, N.C.; one son, Michael Fraley and wife, Debi, of Roanoke, Va.; four granddaughters, Alison, Moretz and husband, James, of Zionville, N.C., Mary Ann Greene and husband, Michael, of Boone, N.C., Brooke Thomas and husband, Roger, and Paige Fraley, of Roanoke; four grandsons, Dr. Brian Fairchild and wife, Amanda of Athens, Ga., Jason Fairchild of Fleetwood, N.C., Joseph Sherwood and Johnathan Sherwood of Mountain City, Tenn.; six great-grandchildren, Jimmy, Justin and Josie Moretz, Daniel Fairchild, Eliana and Noah Thomas; three sisters, Ruby Watkins of Muskego, Wis., Louise Jones of Kensington, Ohio, and Shirley Lusk of Nashville, Tenn.; three brothers, Bill Fraley of Salenville, Ohio, Don Fraley of Irondale, Ohio, and Lonnie Fraley of Birmingham, Ala.; one sister-in-law, Gladys Harmon Boring of Athens, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Brushy Fork Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Andy McFarland and the Rev. Gordon Noble. The body will lie in state at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. Military graveside services will follow in the Mount Lawn park and Memorial Gardens in Boone. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully request memorials to the Brushy Fork Baptist Church Building Fund, 3915 US Hwy 421N, Vilas, N.C. 28692, or the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home in Boone, N.C.

STUART, Tyler Robinson

Tyler Robinson Stuart, 77, passed away July 21, 2004 in Marin County, California. She was the first cousin of recently retired Virginia state senator, Madison E. Marye of Shawsville. She grew up in Hartford, Connecticut, graduated from Wellesley College, and resided in Orinda, California since 1960. She was the daughter of William K. and Julia Ellis Robinson, the granddaughter of William M. and Pearl Tyler Ellis, and the great-granddaughter of tenth president John Tyler. She is survived by a sister, two daughters, a son, and three granddaughters, all residing in California. She was devoted to her family and to past relatives from her Virginia heritage. Internment will be in White cemetery in Shawsville on Tuesday, August 10, at 11 a.m.

BEELER, Emory T.

Emory T. Beeler, 83 of Roanoke and formerly of Strasburg, Va. went to be with the Lord, Saturday, June 5, 2004. He was a retired self employed carpenter and was preceded in death by his wife, Nelda Louise Beeler, grandson Kevin Mack Bell, seven brothers and one sister. He is survived by his son and fiancee', James E. Beeler and Patsy Reed, Roanoke; daughters and sons-in-law, Diane B. and Warner Bell, Vinton, Donna B. and Steve Epperly, Roanoke; also surviving are grandchildren, Wendy Stone and husband Rick,Travis Bell, Heather Walker and husband Gary, Lisa Hodgon and husband Jake, and Hope Johnson; great grandchildren, Alyssa and Mackenzie; sister, Louise Wendell, Strasburg,Va. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's North Chapel, Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Mark Washington officiating. Interment icon will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends Monday June, 7, 2004 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's North Chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

BENSON, Scott Ivar

Scott Ivar Benson, 28, of Vinton, went home to be with the Lord Friday, May 28, 2004. He was a 1993 graduate of William Byrd High School and presently serving in the United States Navy aboard the USS Rodney M. Davis FFG-60. Scott is survived by his fianc?e Carrie Sullivan of Roanoke, Va.; mother and stepfather, Peggy and Sammy Sampson of Vinton, Va.; father, Carl Ivar Benson, III of Norfolk, Va.; brother and sister-in-law, Perry and Cheryl Taliaferro of Norfolk, Va.; sister and brother-in-law, Melinda and Michael McDonagh of Coventry Ct.; brother and sister-in-law, Jeremiah and Jamie Sampson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister and brother-in-law, Rachel and Enrique Duque of Los Angeles, Calif.; and brother, Daniel Sampson of Vinton, Va. Along with these, his special sister, Christine Harrison and close friend, Richard Murray was present with Scott when he went home. He left behind numerous aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins and a list of friends beyond number. Scott was loved by all who knew him and he loved everyone he met. He had a heart of compassion and a gift of sacrifice and always saw the best in everyone. He had a faith and trust in the Lord and his fellow man and lived his life in such a way that all should strive to follow. Scott was a big part of our hearts and will be deeply missed by everyone. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2004 at Oakey's Vinton Chapel with Pastor Eric Spano officiating. Interment icon will follow in Mt. View cemetery in Vinton. Cecil David Harris, 60, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 6, 2004. Surviving are his wife, Judy H. Harris; six brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas "Tommy" and Gisela Harris, Ira, "Jr." and Evelyn Harris, William "Billy" and Wanda Harris, Bobby and Carol Harris, Douglas and Pat Harris, Danny and Kathy Harris; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Nancy and Larry Marsh, Frances and Ron Garman; a number of nieces and nephews; two uncles; an aunt, and his beloved Cocker Spaniel, Coco. Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside, Sherwood Burial Park, at 2 p.m. Tuesday with the Reverend Walter L. Wood officiating. HODGES, Haney Lee

Haney Lee Hodges, 53, of Roanoke, died Friday, June 4, 2004. He was born July 15, 1950 in Wytheville. He was a graduate of Pulaski County High School and Virginia Tech, retired from MD/VA Milk Producers Cooperative, and a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke. Haney is survived by wife, Susan Anderson-Hodges, Roanoke; father, HM Hodges, Christiansburg; mother, Carolyn McGuire and Stepfather, Bill McGuire, Pulaski; brother Kenny Hodges, Pulaski; sister-in-law, Ann Hodges, Radford; nephew, Jeb, wife Sarah Hodges, Wytheville; niece, Sarah, husband Chris, and son Jack, Bradbury, Radford; niece Jade Brillheart, Radford; brother, Tim Hodges, Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; brother and sister-in-law, Rob and Misti Hodges, nieces, Abby and Rachel Hodges, Pulaski; stepsister, Jamie, and Ed, Kirby, Greenville, N.C.; stepbrother, Mark and Donna McGuire, Houston, Texas; parents-in-law, Garnet and Gloria Anderson; sister-in-law, Ann and Charles Bauer; and nephew, Matthew Bauer, all of White Hall, Md.; and many lovingly devoted relatives of the Hodges and Umberger families. Also, his beloved canine companions, Baylor and Grendel. Haney, or Haney Lee to the the Hodges relatives was a man of great passion, intelligence and incredible will. He loved life, grand trees, big dogs, and fireplaces. Haney loved to be with family and friends and to make people laugh; he was always quick with a quip. He lived life thoughtfully and believed in the value of big dreams and in self-determination. Haney pulled through many tribulations, having lived 39 years with Type I Diabetes. He was tearfully thankful for the magnanimous gift of organ donation that made it possible to extend his life. Haney will be remembered by those who love him as a builder of the community who spread great cheer to those around him and saw the positive in life. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be conducted Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at 3 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke with visitation following until 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation,4502 Starkey Road, Roanoke, Va. 24018 or to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke Endowment Fund, 2015 Grandin Road, Roanoke Va. 24015. JONES, Daisy Lawrence

Daisy Lawrence Jones, 89 of Salem, gently passed into the arms of her heavenly father on Saturday, June 5, 2004. She was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon L. Jones in 1999. Surviving family include son and daughter-in-law, Max V. and Pat Jones; daughter, Linda Frye; grandchildren, Meredith and Chris Jones and April Frye; and one great-granddaughter; brothers, Tallie Lawrence, George Lawrence, Calvin Lawrence; a sister, Irene Flowers; dear friends Ray and Helen Fralin, Junior and Martha Garst, Tony and Kellee Terry. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at 11 a. m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem with the Reverend Roger Counts officiating. Interment icon will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 on Monday, June 7, 2004.
