WALTERS, Everett Ray

Everett Ray Walters, 82, of Roanoke, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, June 3, 2004. He was preceded in death by his wife Arlene Nichols Walters, an infant son James Everett Walters, brothers Jack and Henry Walters, sisters Lillie Jenkins, Ora Nolley and Louise Austin, parents William Curtis and Susie Boyd Walters. In addition to being an Army veteran of World War II, he was a member and former trustee of Bible Baptist Church. He retired as a Captain with the Roanoke City Fire Department after 33 years of service. Surviving are hie daughters, Janet Camper and husband, Allen of Vinton, Phyllis Paulin and husband, Jerry of Bargersville, Ind.; son David Walters of Vinton; grandchildren, Tammy Birch, Lisa Paulin Cid, Chris Camper, Travis Paulin, Erica Paulin; great-grandchildren Rebecca, Jennifer, Jarrod Everett and Victoria Birch, Kristin and Aaron Alls, Diego Cid, Haley Rose Paulin and Riley Everett Paulin; brothers James Earl Walters and Guy Walters, both of Salem; sisters Mildred Walters and Garnette Rose, both of Salem, Gladys Agee of Christiansburg. Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to Bible Baptist Church, 2929 Garden City Boulevard, Roanoke, Va. 24014. Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, June 7, 2004 at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road by Pastor Tim Kirchoff. Interment icon will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. CORNBLEET, Mildred

Mildred Cornbleet, 95, of Rocky Mount, died on Friday, April 16, 2004. Beloved wife of the late Jerry Cornbleet. Dearest mother of Edward Lehr Cornbleet. Loving daughter of the late Edward Lehr and Bess Gallant Lehr Zemelman. Our dear sister-in-law, aunt, great-aunt, great-great-aunt and cousin. Special thanks and gratitude go to dedicated care-givers, Jane Austin, Vickie Bowman, Melissa Hodges, Myrtle Montgomery, and Beverly Wisler. DOOLEY, Lee Benton

Lee Benton Dooley, 82, of Montvale, died Saturday, June 5, 2004 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born in Bedford County on August 24, 1921, a son of the late John Walter Dooley and Carrie Elizabeth Broughman Dooley. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, James W. Dooley and Otis B. Dooley. Lee was a member of Walnut Grove Union Church and was an Army Veteran of World War II. He was employed as a District Supervisor with Contracting Enterprises (formerly Cofer Construction Co.) retiring with over 30 years of service. He also was employed for Southwest Construction Co. for over 10 years. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sarah Harris Dooley and special daughter, Lori Mae Dooley, of the home; his sons and their wives, Ronnie L. Dooley and Jeanne, Philip D. Dooley and Donna and Douglas A. Dooley and Lisa, all of Montvale; his daughters and their husbands, Wanda H. Ware and Red of Salem, Elaine D. Falls and Mark of Montvale, Ann D. Kirby and Edward of Scottsville, Gayle D. Bobbitt and Wayne of Bedford; his brother, Audrey G. Dooley and his wife Gladys of Bedford; his sister, Edna D. Welch and his sister-in-law Lucille Dooley, both of Montvale; also eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at Walnut Grove Union Church with the Rev. Calvin Shepherd and the Rev. George Stewart officiating. ERWIN, James Ray

James Ray Erwin, 59, of Moneta, passed away Saturday, June 5, 2004. He was predeceased by his father, William Erwin and brother, Richard Erwin. He is survived by his mother, Catherine D. Erwin; former wife Barbara Erwin; sons, Robert H. Erwin, Jeff M. Erwin; daughters, Stacy L. Erwin and Laurie A. Erwin; also granddaughters, Kristi N. Wildanger, Tristan V. Erwin; brother, Lawson Erwin; and sister, Myra Dowse. He was retired from Verizon after 25 years of service and was a veteran of the Viet Nam War while in the Navy. Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, June 9, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Frank Feather officiating. NOLEN, Goldie Boyd

Goldie Boyd Nolen, of Christiansburg, age 79, died June 5, 2004 after a brave battle with Multiple Myeloma. She was the daughter of the late Eula and General Boyd of Floyd, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Gordon L. Nolen and Warren Grant Nolen, brother Wilson Boyd, sisters Lelia Hatcher, Pauline Brockwell, Tempsey Mitchell and infant sister Frances Boyd. Surviving are daughter and son-in-law Jane and Robert O'Keeffe; sons and daughter-in-law Steve and Eva Nolen and Randy and Kathy Nolen. She is also survived by grandsons Ryan and Zachary Nolen and survived by sisters Sylvia Hatcher, Ocie Weddle, Irene Spangler and Lucy Harris all of Floyd and many special nieces and nephews. She also leaves Nicole Woodruff, a special granddaughter.The family would like to extend sincerest thanks to Dr. Scott Jamison, Carilion New River Valley Hospital Nursing staff, and staff at Radford Rehabilitation & Nursing Center. Special thanks to all friends, neighbors and co-workers who provided support during her illness and especially to the children from Falling Branch Elementary School who gave their hearts and smiles to Mrs. Goldie. REYNOLDS, Ralph Estial

Ralph Estial Reynolds, 85, of Christiansburg, died at his home on Saturday, June 5, 2004. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Lou Budweiser Reynolds; a sister, Frances Winn, of Knoxville, Tenn.; a sister-in-law, Violet Reynolds of Hampton, VA; two daughters, Lou Reynolds, Vicki R. Sciarretta and husband Pepper, all of Christiansburg; three grandchildren, Erica Wilson Williams, Patrick Lee Hilt, both of Christiansburg, Christa Lou Hilt of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and five great-grandchildren, all of Christiansburg. He was born in the Sinking Creek section of Craig County, and was a graduate of National Business College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in Scotland and England during World War II. He worked for Norfolk & Western Railroad as a Traffic Manager and was retried from Hercules, Inc, (RAAP) as a Transportation Superintendent. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made in his name to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad or the Christiansburg Fire Department. Pursuant to his wishes, his body will be cremated and the family will have a private family memorial service at a later date. WARDEN, Christopher Frank

Christopher Frank Warden, 21, of Radford, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, June 5, 2004. He was born June 11, 1982 in Radford. He was a graduate of the Gateway Christian Academy (Blacksburg) and a member of the New River Baptist Temple (Radford). He was employed by Alliant Tech Systems. He is survived by wife, Charity Phillips Warden; son, Eli Frank Warden, Hiwassee; his parents, Steve and Donna Warden, Belspring; one sister, Amy Warden, Belspring; one brother, Everett Warden, Belspring; grandparents, Larry and Betty Warden, Belspring, Evan and Nancy Ridpath, Snowville Community; great-grandparents, Grover and Ocie Gravley-Belspring, Lollie Warden, Draper; father and mother-in-law, Austin and Vickie Phillips, Hiwassee; sisters-in-law, Amanda, Katina and Anna Phillips- Hiwassee; brother-in-law, Andrew Phillips, Hiwassee. Many aunts, uncles, and cousins will miss him greatly, but look forward to a wonderful reunion in Heaven also survive Chris. WASKINS, Lester Howard

Lester Howard Waskins, residing in Blacksburg, Virginia died at his home on Saturday, June 5, 2004. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on November 25, 1937, the son of Anne Coplan Waskins and Joseph Howard Waskins. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Gressens, of Blacksburg, Virginia; his two daughters, Leslie Stewart Waskins, of Baltimore, Maryland and Stephanie Anne Waskins, of San Francisco, California; three stepdaughters, Barbara and Margaret Gressens, of Raleigh, North Carolina, Kate Frankforter, of Jakarta, Indonesia; and stepgranddaughter, Jessica Frankforter. He was a graduate of Forest Park High School of Baltimore, and Washington and Lee College. Following college he served in the Air Force. After a professional career in retail and marketing, he recently retired from New Energy Bedrooms where he was Vice President of Sales and Marketing. A private service will be held in Baltimore. GIVENS, George Watrous

George Watrous Givens, 72, of Lynchburg died on Saturday, June 5, 2004 surrounded by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Duane. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Irene Givens; his eight children, Chip, Sandy, Terryl, Danny, Ginny, Bobbie, Sean, and Sarah; their spouses; and 21 grandchildren. George was a history teacher for 19 years - 5 in Cortland, New York, 10 in Tucson, Arizona, and 4 at E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg. Eager to turn his passion for reading into a business, he opened Givens Books in 1976. In 1999 he retired in order to further pursue his love of research, writing, and lecturing. He published six books in his lifetime, and another will be published posthumously in August. He was a member of the Lynchburg 1st Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and taught Sunday School on and off for 30 years. He spent much of his retirement traveling to the historic town of Nauvoo, Illinois, where he was in-house historian for four summers. He also spent time visiting other LDS congregations around the country, giving lectures on the history of the Mormon Church. He was a regular for many years on WSET and on WLNI, during which time he presented book reviews. George will be deeply missed by his family and friends who knew him, learned from him, and loved him. A funeral service will be held tonight at 7 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lynchburg. Lawrence Edward Hartless, 16, of Vesuvius died Saturday, June 5, 2004. He was born on July 8,1987 in Lexington, Va., son of Michael Elwood and Carolyn Potter Hartless. He was a student at Rockbridge County High School. His friends called him "Big Show" and he loved to work on his 4-wheeled drive truck. He is survived by his parents, Mike and Carolyn Hartless; sister, Pamela F. Hartless; brothers, Michael E. Hartless, Jr., Mark H. Hartless and Troy W. Hartless all of Vesuvius; grandmother, Macie N. Pugh Potter of Buena Vista; nephew, Nelson Conner of Buena Vista. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2004 from the graveside in Fairfield cemetery with the Rev. PENNINGTON, Randall Earl, Sr.

Randall Earl Pennington, Sr., 57, of Marion, passed away, Saturday, June 5, 2004 at the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. He was born in Abingdon to the late Earl G. and Nannie McDaniel Pennington. He was employed with Brunswick, Marion Composites and General Dynamics for over 37 dedicated years where he supervised the test range and worked as a Senior Engineer. Mr. Pennington will be forever remembered as a very devoted and loving husband and wonderful father. He was loved and will be missed by all that knew him. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Brenda Roop Pennington; one son and daughter-in-law, Randall, Earl, Jr. and Cynthia Pennington, Roanoke; one brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Sherri Pennington, Augusta, Ga.; nieces and nephews, Shane Pennington, Frankford, De., Eric Pennington, Augusta, Ga., Tim Roop, Bristol, Va. Rosa Lee Hundley Plasters, 93, of Meadows of Dan, died Saturday night, June 5, 2004, at her home. She was born November 16, 1910 in Stokes County, N.C. She was the daughter of the late James Walter and Lummie Manring Hundley. She was a homemaker, a loving mother and a member of the Concord Primitive Baptist Church for 68 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, John C. Plasters, two daughters, Bessie Mae Plasters and Artie Plasters Milton, son, James Plasters, two sons-in-law, Tom Milton and Jimmy Gilbert, three sisters, Mamie Holt, Mary Hill, Mattie Bullins and three brothers, Willie Hundley, Cyrus Hundley and Collie Hundley. She is survived by four daughters, Nadean Gilbert of Stuart, Va., Jane Clifton of Woolwine, Va., Lucille Harris and husband, Bill of Dublin, Ga., Shirley Meade and husband, Steve of Millersville, Md.; and one son, Billy Wayne Plasters and wife, Sherry of Meadows of Dan, Va.; one stepson, John Calvin Cockram and wife, Jo Nell of Tega Cay, S.C.; two sisters, Nina Ore of Madison, N.C., Ruby Chaney of Mayodan, N.C.; one brother, James Hundley of Stoneville, N.C.; 16 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and special friends, James Hylton, Leon Walker, Barbara Johnson and Mary Ellen Scott. Funeral services for Mrs. Plaster will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart, conducted by Elder Donnie Conner and Pastor Jack Foley. WORD, Elder James E., Jr.

Elder James E. Word, Jr. passed away at his home in Atlanta, Georgia on Wednesday, June 2, 2004. He was born in Halifax County of Virginia on March 28, 1946. James Word was the first born of James and the late Elizabeth Word. Mr. Word was an active member of the West End Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. He was also the founder and proprietor of Cherokee Mortgage Investment, Inc. He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth A. Word and brother, Phillip W. Word. Those left to cherish his memory is his only son, Cory Fouch of Atlanta, GA; and one grandson; his father, James Word. Sr. of Roanoke, VA.; four brothers, Billy (Beryl) Word, John (Evelyn) Word, both of Roanoke, VA., George (Lois) Word of Smyrna, GA and Larry (Yvonne) Word of Huntsville, AL; two sisters, Debra (Dennis) Mosby of Naples, FL and Shirley V.
