OGLE, Clinton Harrold
Clinton Harrold Ogle, of Chilhowie, (April 21,1922-June 12, 2004) passed away after a long illness. He was the oldest son of Arnold and Eather Ogle. He was born in Barren Springs, Wythe County, Virginia and lived most of his life in Hillsville, Carroll County, Va. He was raised on a farm on Coon Ridge, and was proud of his service in the HQ CO 3rd BN 149th Infantry, 38th Division in the Philippines during WWII. He was a life member of VFW Post #1115 in Hillsville. He worked at Hillsville Auto & Electric and Sears Roebuck and Co., later moving as Sears Service Center Manager to Galax, and Radford, Virginia, and retiring in 1978. He was a member of F.& A.M Lodge No. 206 in Bland, Va. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Kay Ogle of Saltville, Va.; two grandchildren, Erich Harold Ogle of Starkville, Miss., Phillip Wyatt Ogle of New York, N.Y.; and one sister, Rubye Nichols. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph C. Ogle. Mr. Ogle will be interred in Mount Rose cemetery, and at his request, no services will be held. He was a private person who sought to cause no inconvenience in other people's lives. In lieu of flowers, he requested that donations be made to any charity of your choice. He donated to the Salvation Army, Shiloh Methodist Church in Woodlawn Va., and the Museum of the Middle Appalachians in Saltville, Va. Condolences may be sent to Douglas Ogle, 300 Poor Valley Road, Saltville, Va. Directions will be provided for those who wish to pay last respect at the grave.

George Martin Reed, 80, of Natural Bridge, died Friday, June 11, 2004 in the University of Virginia Hospital. Mr. Reed was born October 30, 1923 in Rockbridge County, a son of the late Ruddy Hutton Reed and Emma Wilson Reed. He retired from James Lee's after 29 years. Surviving are his brother, Ralph Reed of Roanoke; two nephews, Harry D. Reed of Natural Bridge and Jack Reed of Roanoke; and one niece, Theresa Wright, also of Roanoke. Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m., Monday, June 14, 2004 in the High Bridge Presbyterian cemetery with the Rev. Glenn M. Coleman officiating. BLACKWELL, Susan Beulah Johnson
Susan Beulah Johnson Blackwell, 102, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, June 13, 2004 at the Roanoke United Methodist Home. She was born March 7, 1902 in Perkiomenville, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Blackwell graduated from the Norristown, Pennsylvania Business College in 1919 at the age of 17. She served as a nurse during World War I at Norristown State Hospital before moving to Roanoke in 1922. Mrs. Blackwell was of the Lutheran Reform Faith and preceded in death by two husbands, William L. Blackwell on August 30, 1927, and Leonard A. Blackwell on August 3, 1981, and a daughter Florence B. Howell on May 28, 2003. She is survived by three daughters and their spouses, Virginia and Melvin Huffine of Roanoke, Helen and Johnny Wade of Alexandria, Frances and Harvey Gross of Roanoke; son-in-law, Hugh Howell of Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren, Gary Wade of Orlando, Debbie Bayliss of Alexandria, Susan Robinson of Richmond, Cindy Johnson and Bonnie Douglas of Roanoke; six greatgrandchildren, Jessica Greene of Orlando, Brandon Boothe of Roanoke, Chase, Derek and Lloyd Bayliss of Alexandria, and Molly Robinson of Richmond; one great-great-grandson; and one great-great-granddaughter. He is survived by his wife, Virginia C. Bright; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and one sister. Emory C. Brown, (Billy), 69, of Salem, passed away Sunday, June 13, 2004. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was employed by General Electric since 1956. His passions were his grandsons, country music, and the Galax Fiddler's Convention. He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Delena W. Brown; sons and daughter-in-law, Emory C. (E.C.) and Susan Brown of Fayetteville, Arkansas, David R. Brown and Joseph C. Hallie Thornhill Lee, 91, of Fincastle, died June 13, 2004 at The Brian Center, Fincastle. She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Virginia Thornhill; husband, Carl L. Lee, Sr.; one son, Carl L. Lee, Jr.; granddaughter, Kimberly Oberg; great-grandsons, Eric Lee, and Brandon and Dustin McClung, and four brothers. Mrs. Lee was born in Matoaka, West Virginia, July 18, 1912, but lived most of her life in the Pleasant Dale Community where she attended the old Pleasant Dale Elementary School. She also attended the Pleasant Dale Church of the Brethren from about age five and became an active member in 1936. She is survived by her children, Jack D. Lee, Shirley B. Davis, and Bonnie B. Oberg of Fincastle, and The Reverend Dr. Larry L. Lee of Manassas, Virginia; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters, Violet L. Tyree and Pearl L. DeHart of Roanoke and Salem. Barbarics and husband, Dennis, of Pasadena, Calif.; grandchildren, Jason and David Barbarics of Pasadena, Calif.; and many other friends and family members of the Roanoke Valley. A lifelong resident of Franklin County, she was active with her "Guthrie" family in their Roanoke City Market business. Surviving are her husband, Michael Dale Luckado; parents, Stuart and Betty Guthrie; sister, Deborah S. Guthrie and Lincoln D. Virginia Overfelt Meeks, 74, of Rocky Mount, became one of the Lord's special angels on Monday June 14, 2004 in a Roanoke hospital. She was a lifetime member of+ Oak Grove Church of the Brethren and retired from E. I. duPont with over 34 years of service. She was a daughter of the late Harry and Rosie Bowles Overfelt and was also preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert D. Overfelt and Cline Overfelt. Surviving is her husband of 57 years, James J. Meeks; her son and daughter-in-law, Donnie and Donna Meeks; her granddaughter, Kim Meeks; two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Ashley Brubaker; one brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Marie Overfelt; two sisters, Mary Mullins, Shirley and Paul James; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Leavona Overfelt, Viola and Jesse Turner, Wilbern and Martha Sue Meeks, Albert and Sue Meeks, Edward and Laura Meeks, Shelbern and Ann Meeks; special friends, Mildred and Ray Jarrells; and many nieces and nephews. Helen Marie Booth Croft Wood Schwarz, 68, of Bedford, died Sunday, June 13, 2004. She was born April 9, 1936 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Griffin Thomas Booth and Berta Mae Robertson Booth. Marie was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church. She was also a retired LPN and agent with Prudential Life Insurance. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Brooks Key and a brother, Nathan Booth. She is survived by her husband, John Paul Schwarz; two sons, Thomas E. Croft and Robert D. Baskette; three daughters, Deborah C. Key, Pamela A. Croft and Rhonda W. Betty Lee Brown Shearer, 75, of Rocky Mount, died on Sunday, June 13, 2004. Born July 24, 1928, the daughter of the late Walter C. and Henrietta Alverta Simpson Brown. Surviving are her husband of 52 years, John Adams Shearer of Rocky Mount; her children, John Douglas Shearer and wife, Dixie Lee Hurt Shearer of Rocky Mount, and Henrietta (Nettie) Simpson Shearer and Robin L. Walls of Rocky Mount; twin sister, Ann Bolling Brown Pace of Rocky Mount; brothers, Walter Chester Brown and wife, Lois Lindsay Brown, of Rocky Mount and Daniel Simpson Brown and wife, Suzanne Martin Brown of Roanoke; nieces and nephews, W. Colby Brown and wife, Mandy, Daphne Brown Oakes and husband, Steven, Lindsay Brown Cantrell, Robert S. Pace and wife, Hazel, Richard Pace and wife, Olga, Daniel Brown, Jr. and wife, Georgiann, and Amy Brown Peterson and husband, Mark; numerous great-nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, William N. Betty taught school at George Washington High School in Danville, Va. and Franklin County High School in Rocky Mount and coached the girl's basketball teams at both schools. A lifetime member of Rocky Mount Christian Church, having taught Sunday School and held many offices in the Christian Women's Fellowship including chairman. She was an Elder in the church and served as Chairman of the church board at one time. Betty also served as a den pack leader for the Boy Scouts and a Brownie leader for the Girl Scouts. Betty's favorite hobbies were bridge and golf. She enjoyed playing cards with many of her close friends. She was a member of the Willow Creek and Waterfront Country Clubs and was an active member in both Women's Golf Associations. She will greatly be missed by all of her golf friends who gave her so much joy. Memorial services celebrating Betty's life will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at the Rocky Mount Christian Church with the Rev. Virgil and Sue Knipp and the Rev. Jack (Jim) (Pop-Pops) Lawson Arrington, 78, of Ellett, "Crossed The Bar" Friday, June 11, 2004 at Bowman-Gray Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. after a short, but courageous battle with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. Jim was born on December 21, 1925 in Ellett to the late George W. and Rushia Scaggs Arrington. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Billy Joe; a sister, Joyce Henschel; a nephew, Steve Arrington; and a brother-in-law, Richard Umberger. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved family, wife, Adelia Porterfield Arrington; daughter and son-in-law, Melinda (The Girly) and Darrell Smith; grandson, Hunter (The Elf) Smith; God-grandchildren, Danielle (Little Buddy) and Zachary (The Crickett) Crouse; and their parents, Frank and Julie Crouse; brother and sister-in-law, Foster and Mittie Arrington; sister and brother-in-law, George Ann and Jimmy Pence; brother-in-law Fred Henschel; sister-in-law, Martha Umberger, brother-in-law, Don Poteet; sister-in-law and husband, Florence and Bob Montgomery; brothers-in-law and wives, Cecil and Jean, Albert and Brenda Porterfield. Jim was a lifelong farmer and dedicated steward of the land; a member of Northfork Baptist Church, the Montgomery County Farm Bureau, serving on the Board for many years, the BHS FFA Alumni Association, and a charter member of the former Ellett Valley Ruritan Club. Jim's greatest joy in life was tending his cattle, keeping his farm "clean" and raising a big garden for family and sharing with neighbors. He also loved children and did many things to bring joy and encouragement to young people. The most meaningful tribute to his life would be to spend time with a child and make a difference in their life. The family requests no flowers, but suggests that a flower might be taken to a shut-in or nursing home resident.
