LYTTON, Richard Wade
Richard Wade Lytton, 82 of Christiansburg, and formerly of Walton, transcended this earth on Monday, June 14, 2004 to be with the Lord. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He remained a caring companion and a constant provider throughout his life. Richard had an extraordinary sense of humor which he maintained, along with his dignity though his last days. He was preceded in death by his father, Harrison Lytton; mother, Gracie Evangeline Nunley Lytton; brothersLesley, Robert, and Frank Lytton; sister, Ruby Thompson. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Lucille S. Lytton; sons and daughter-in-law, Donnie and Kay Lytton of Christiansburg, Terry Lytton of Catawba; daughters and son-in-law, Wanda and Tim Sheppard, and Debbie Lytton of Christiansburg; grandchildren, Jerry Graham, Wendy Phillips, Maegan Lytton, Rhonda Atkins, Angie Stephens, Cindy Phillips; great-grandchildren, Chelsea Phillips, Cody Phillips, Ashley Phillips, Luke Stephens, Olivia Stephens, Brittney Graham, Calvin Graham, Breden Graham, Matthew Graham; sister-in-law, Orlene Lytton of Radford; and many nieces and nephews. HAYES, Beatrice Huffman
Beatrice Huffman Hayes, 81, of Danville, formerly of Glasgow, died Sunday, June 13, 2004 in the Roman Eagle Memorial Home in Danville. Mrs. Hayes was born on March 24, 1923 in Rockbridge Co., and was a daughter of the late Samuel Arthur Huffman and Ethel Hickman Huffman. She was a member of the Falling Spring Presbyterian Church in Glasgow and was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Houston Hayes. Mrs. Hayes is survived by one son, Samuel Fred Hayes of Danville; two daughters, Sophie Baugher of Glenmore, Pa., and Brenda Hickman of Greensboro, N.C.; three sisters, Lois Painter of Richmond, Josephine Martin of Lexington, and Phyllis Manspile of Staunton; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at the Harrison Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Brian D. Weger officiating. Burial will follow in the Falling Spring Presbyterian cemetery. KERSEY, Marion Carr
Marion Carr Kersey, 78, of McLean, Va., died Sunday, June 13, 2004 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Gaithersburg, Md. of complications from a stroke. Mrs. Kersey was born and raised in Roanoke, Va. She was elected to the National Honor Society and graduated with honors from Jefferson High School in 1943. Upon graduation, she received a scholarship to Northeastern University in Boston, Mass. In 1946, she married
Clinton W. Kersey and moved to Norfolk, Va., where she worked in the library at the St. Helena extension of the College of William and Mary. She received her librarian degree after having taken courses in library science from Virginia Commonwealth University and George Mason University. Mrs. Kersey worked at PRC for fifteen years and served as the firm's head librarian from 1984 until she retired in 1989. Prior to joining PRC, she worked as a librarian at General Research Corporation in McLean, in the Henrico County School System in Richmond, Va., and in the Roanoke City School System in Roanoke, Va., as an elementary school librarian. She also worked in the library at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va. In addition to her work as a librarian, Mrs. Kersey was active in the churches where she was a member. At Columbia Baptist Church in Falls Church, she was a Deacon, member of the Senior Adult Choir, a Sunday school teacher, and college youth leader, she was a charter member and the first librarian of Bon Air Baptist Church in Richmond, Va., and she and her husband led the youth program at First Baptist Church in Roanoke, Va. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Clinton W. Kersey, Sr.; three children, Marion Kate Larkin of Olney, Md., Phillip Wade Kersey of Chesapeake Beach, Md., and Clinton W. Kersey, Jr. of Gaithersburg, Md.; and five grandchildren. A daughter, Nancy Ruth Kersey died in 1959. A service of worship and celebration will be held on Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at 7 p.m. at Columbia Baptist Church, Falls Church, Va., to give thanks for her life. On Wednesday, June 16, 2004, a graveside service and internment will be held at Evergreen Burial park in Roanoke. Doris Lee Kimble, 91, of Meadows of Dan, passed away Monday, June 14, 2004 at Twin County Regional Hospital. Mr. Kimble was preceded in death by his wife, Wavie Edna Kimble; and two sons, Clifton West Kimble and Carl Rush Kimble. He was a member of Reed Island Springs Baptist Church. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia and Morris Agee of Salem; one son and daughter-in-law, Coy and Bonnie Kimble of Hillsville; one sister, Hazel Montgomery of Baltimore, Md.; one brother, Marvin Kimble of Meadows of Dan; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. EGGERS, Richard L.
Richard L. Eggers, 91, a well known resident of Jerry Lane, Abingdon, Va. went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 10, 2004 in Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was born August 19, 1912 in Zionsville, North Carolina, a son of the late William Claude Eggers and the late Emma Miller Eggers. He and his family moved to Virginia in December, 1923. He attended elementary schools in Mabel, North Carolina, and Lodi and Meadowview, Virginia. He attended Greenfield High School, and was a graduate of Rich Valley High School. He was a former truck driver, a licensed insurance adjuster, and for many years was the owner of Eggers Insurance Agency in Abingdon. He was a salesman for Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon for many years and was a retired farmer. He was the last male charter member of the Abingdon Bible Church, where he had served as an Elder, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Sunday School Superintendent. He had attended Greendale Chapel for the past several years. He loved baseball, was a member of the Greenfield High School Baseball Team during high school, and later served as a coach for the Moose Team of the Babe Ruth League and helped lead the team to a state championship. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, McCabe Lodge No. 56 for over 50 years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in Japan. He had a great love for the Lord, reading, music, and traveling. He and his family sang in a Gospel quartet for several years and had a Sunday morning program on WOPI radio. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James G. Eggers and R. Glenn Eggers; three sisters, Pearl Eggers Jones, Bonnie Whiteaker Nash and Edith Compton; and a granddaughter, Kim Lotts Campbell. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Dora Mae Jones Eggers; one daughter, Phyllis Eggers Lotts and husband K. W. (Wick) Lotts of Abingdon; two sons, Richard Larry Eggers and wife Jo of Buchanan, Virginia, and the Rev. Jerry A. Eggers and wife Dorinda of Abingdon; grandchildren, Laura Beth Greer of Abingdon, and Robbie Schlosser and wife Sandra of Roanoke, Virginia; three great-grandchildren, Josh Campbell of Lexington, Virginia, and Aaron Greer and Sarah Greer, both of Abingdon; one sister, Mary Lois (Tooty) Rutledge of Abingdon; three brothers-in-law, Charles Jones of Abingdon, Calvin Jones and wife Kathy of Abingdon, and Erwin Compton of Kingsport, Tennessee; one sister-in-law, Myrtle A. Jones of Abingdon; several nieces and nephews including Charles F. Whiteaker to whom he served as a father figure. He is also survived by a host of friends. Funeral services for Richard L. Eggers will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Greendale Chapel with the Rev. Jerry A. Eggers, the Rev. Paul Bufford, and the Rev. Paul Ketron officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Charles F. Whiteaker, Bill Jones, Dick Rutledge, John Rutledge, Gail Rutledge, Eddie McConnell, Zane Pierce, and Bobby Barr. Honorary pallbearers will be Rev. V. N. Phillips, Rev. Doug Findley, Rev. Bob McCormick, additional nephews, men of the Abingdon Bible Church, men of Greendale Chapel and friends. Rev. Ettie Magalene Baldwin, 73, of Marion, passed away Friday, June 11, 2004 in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. She was born in Marion to the late Elder Charles Lee and Florence Parks Baldwin, and was preceded in death by a brother, James Baldwin and a sister, Grace LaNell Arnold. She was a licenced minister in the Church of God, and was a member of the Abundant Life Church of God in Marion. Ms. Baldwin was the registrar in Smyth County for over 27 years. She is survived by three brothers, the Rev. Leroy Baldwin of Greer, S.C., the Rev. Eugene Baldwin of Marion, and K.C. Baldwin of Marion; two sisters, Leona Russell and Ruth Brooks, both of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.
