Joan Armstrong Thurman, 78, of Rocky Mount, died on Friday June 11, 2004 at her home. Born in Birmingham, England, she was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Giles Monroe Thurman and by her parents, Walter L. and Mary E. Armstrong. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, John M. and Kathy Thurman of Douglasville, Ga.; her daughter and son-in-law, Carole T. and Jimmy B. Mrs. Deborah Charlene Akers, 51, of Roanoke, formerly of Pulaski, passed away Sunday, December 12, 2004. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Juanita Montgomery; and a brother, Clifford Montgomery. Survivors include her husband, Charles Akers of Roanoke; sons, Thomas and Clifford Newby; two daughters, Deborah (Rasheem) Shockley and Maria (Mark Kimbrough; three stepsons, Robert, Charles and Frankie Akers; one stepdaughter, April Akers, all of Pulaski; one brother, Alvin Montgomery of Roanoke; nine grandchildren; 13 stepgrandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends. Phyllis Crowder Bailey, of Roanoke, died Sunday, December 12, 2004. She was the widow of Phyllip Warren Bailey. She was a member of the League of Women's Voters. Surviving are her children, Carolyn, Gwen and husband Al, Warren and wife Patti, Kevin, Keith and wife Pat, Chuck and Rebecca; nine grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; also are many special friends. Emma Gladys Sisson Brown, 93, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Monday, December 13, 2004. She was a former member of Lakeside Baptist Church and Tabernacle Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hobert L. Brown; daughter, Sonya Lee Brown; her parents, James L. and Lula Lawrence Sisson; and a brother, Cleatus Sisson. She was a very loving and giving mother. She cared for everyone less fortunate, including her sons, from the Virginia Baptist Home, Phillip Ray Honig, Salem, Herbie Lee Honig, Salem, Billy Barrett, Roanoke, Roy Lowe, Covington and Larry Laprad; daughter-in-law, Carol S. Honig; sisters, Alley McCray, Roanoke, Nina Bowers, Floyd; grandchildren, Aaron, Ashley and Phillip Honig, Jr.; nieces, Francis, Joyce and Sybil; nephew, Rocky. Dorris Soyars Brubaker, 87, of Salem, went to be with the Lord Monday, December 13, 2004. She was a retired secretary at Huff Lane School. Mrs. Brubaker was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and a former long time member of Oakland Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Newton Arthur Brubaker. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother. The greatest legacy she left her children and her grandchildren was her relationship with God. She was faithful until the end to read her bible every night. She always read out loud because as dementia progressed, she said she could better remember what she read. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Lynne and Rick Elmore of Salem, son and daughter-inlaw, Michael and Dee Brubaker of Roanoke; grandchildren and spouses, Jeff and Michelle Elmore, Whitney Elmore, Justin and Nancy Brubaker and Seth Brubaker, one great-grandson, Taylor Elmore. Services will be held at Oakey's North Chapel 1 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Rick Elmore and the Rev. Ronald D. Turner officiating. Interment

COOKE, Mary McCauley
Mary McCauley Cooke, 93, of Aydlett, N.C., and formerly of Roanoke, died Sunday, December 12, 2004 at her home after a short battle with cancer. Mary was the daughter of James P. and Mary Byrne McCauley and was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis M. Cooke, Sr.; their daughter, Kathleen Ellen Cooke and her brothers, James and Joseph McCauley. Mary lived a full and happy life. She had a special gift for making everyone feel loved and appreciated. She will be sorely missed by her immediate family, her many cousins, nieces and nephews, her church community and especially her friends in Palm Bay, Fla. where she resided for 28 years, before making her home with her daughter in Aydlett in 2000. Mary is survived by her sister, Sister Elaine McCauley, a Daughter of Charity of Emmitsburg, Md.; her son, Lewis Melvin Cooke, Jr. and dear friend, Carol of Fairview Park, Ohio; her daughters, Mary C. Bunch of Aydlett, N.C., Carol C. Locke and husband, Thomas of Ocala, Fla.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held in St. Andrew's Diocesan cemetery, Friday, December 17, 2004, 10 a.m. with the Rev. Msgr. Thomas G. Miller officiating. GUERRANT, Sara Davis
Sara Davis Guerrant, 87, of Roanoke, died Saturday, December 11, 2004 at Richfield after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was much loved by her family, friends and by her piano students. Sara was the daughter of Dr. Littleton Davis and Louise Camp Davis. She received private piano lessons for many years. At a young age, she won a 10 dollar gold piece as first prize in a statewide contest in piano. She received advanced training in piano performance and teaching techniques from Hollins University, Roanoke College and Julliard School of Music in New York. Sara also enjoyed playing bridge. Her bridge club mostly consisted of junior high school girl friends from the 1930's. She served as post chapel organist at Fort Story, Virginia during World War II. Sara was an Elder at Salem Presbyterian Church and co-advisor to the Church Youth Group for Recreational Activities. Sara survived her one marriage for 63 years, 11 months and 2 weeks. Surviving are her husband, Richard F. Guerrant, Architect; three children, Dr. Richard L. Guerrant and wife, Nancy of Charlottesville, Thomas K. Guerrant of Roanoke and Anne Guerrant Munstedt and husband, Peter of Needham, Mass.; six grandchildren, Jeff Guerrant of West Point, Va., Amy Guerrant Perkins of Roanoke, David Guerrant of Wilmington, N.C., Kurt, Karl and Emily Munstedt of Needham, Mass.; five great-grandchildren, Julia, Jeffrey and Benjamin Guerrant, Davis and Lily Perkins. Graveside funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, December 18, 2004 at Evergreen Burial Park conducted by the Reverend Dean Lindsey. JOHNSON, Edward
Edward "Randy" Johnson, 25, of Vinton, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, December 11, 2004. Randy was a recovering addict who came to know Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. As a result, he became actively involved in service to the Lord at Parkway Wesleyan Church. He was preceded in death by his dad, Jimmie and is survived by his wife, Alisha; a precious daughter Samantha; his mom, Pat; and brother, Joe. Randy also loved and is survived by his two nieces, Krissie and Michelle Howell; one nephew, Stevie Howell; as well as his godmother, Bonnie Lewis; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Cory, Rachel and Sam Fertitta. He loved the Lord and his family, both immediate and extended, and he will be missed. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, December 16, 2004 at Parkway Wesleyan Church with the Rev. John W. Ott and the Rev. Dr. J. Michael Palmer officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's Vinton Chapel. WILLIAMSON, Charles W., Jr.
Charles W. Williamson, Jr., 86, of Vinton, passed away Monday, December 13, 2004 at the Veterans Medical Center in Salem. He was a long time resident of Vinton and a member of St. Marks Lutheran Church in Roanoke. He was a WWII Army veteran with 4 years service as a radio operator, serving in Ireland, North Africa, and Italy. After returning home from the war, he was employed by Jefferson Electric Company in Roanoke for 37 ½ years until his retirement in 1983. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Crotty Williamson; sons and daughters-in-law, Bev and Linda Williamson, Ralph and Sandy Williamson; a daughter Myra Williamson; two special granddaughters, Tessa Urgo and husband, Ryan, Katie Williamson; and a great-grandson who is his namesake, Charles (Charlie) Urgo. He was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth W. Savage, but is also survived by brothers and sister-in-laws, Frank and Hilda Williamson, Seaford, Delaware, Robert (Bobby) and Mary Ann Williamson, Edinburg, Virginia; a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara Jean and Harry Boley, Vinton, Virginia; and extended family members Brenda and Billy Hager, and Clyde and Judy Blackwell. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Drs. Bobba and Schulman for their tireless efforts, and to his nurse Fran, who was so kind, gentle, and compassionate. She was retired from Singer Furniture and the daughter of the late Leonard Stonewall Carner and Bertha May Bradley Carner. She was preceded in death by a dear friend of many years, Howard Acie Dickerson; two brothers, James Carner and Bernice Carner. Lawhorn of Roanoke; two nieces and three nephews; several great-nieces and nephews, including Kevin Wheeler and wife, Christy; also several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
