JOHNSTON, Crystal Magdalene Carper
Crystal (Chris) Magdalene Carper Johnston, 99, of New Castle, born September 15, 1905, passed away at Snyder Nursing Home on April 13, 2005. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Joseph Anderson Johnston; her only son, Ben Clarke Johnston; brother, Roy Herman Carper; two sons-in-law, Roger Lee Crawford and Maynard Carl DeHart; and a grandson-in-law, David Lee Rye. Born on Meadow Creek in Craig County, on a farm which has been in her family since the 1790's, to Ben Oscar and Allie Gertrude Brickey Carper, she attended Brickey and Looney Grade Schools, New Castle High School and Harrisonburg State Teachers College (now JMU). After graduation she taught at the Enterprise School, a one-room school near her Brickey grandparents on Craig's Creek. Chris took business courses at National Business College and for a time was bookkeeper in her uncle Ballard Carper's store in New Castle. Chris being very musically talented, learned to play the piano by note and ear at an early age. During the 1920's and early 1930's, she and her brother Roy (on fiddle) and father Ben (on banjo) played at Virginia Mineral Springs Resort dances, as well as for other events. She experienced great pride that the family musical talent continues today through the present generations, who play almost any kind of music from hymns to popular music, oldies, mountain music and especially bluegrass. Chris taught Sunday School and played the piano for decades at Chestnut Grove Church. Her two daughters and daughter-in-law all currently carry on this service bplaying in area churches. "Maw Chris", a feisty red-head inherited her ancestors' habit of bluntness. She expressed her opinions and people knew where they stood with her. She was an avid gardener and preserved hundreds of jars of canned food each year until she was unable, often giving half of her bounty to family, friends, and neighbors. Her sour dough biscuits, salt-cured ham, as well as butterscotch pies couldn't be beat. Entering fruits, vegetables, pickles, jelly, etc. in Craig County Fairs each year gave her great pleasure, especially when she collected her prize money and the many blue ribbons. An auction "Nut" she never missed one, decorating her home with her "finds". Tight with a penny, but generous to a fault, she believed in "waste not, want not". Chris was a member of the Craig Chapter No. 121 United Daughters of the Confederacy and a Life Member of the Craig County Historical Society. For many years she wrote a weekly column called "Meadow Creek News" for the local paper, The New Castle Record. In the early 1990's she moved from the home built by her husband during the 1940's to New Castle Commons, and then to Snyder Nursing Home, Salem, in 1996. Surviving are daughters, Jonell Johnston DeHart of Blacksburg and Jennifer Johnston Crawford of New Castle; daughter-in-law, Jane Echols Johnston; grandsons, Jeffrey Clarke Johnston, Joel Mason Johnston ( and wife Heather), and Jason Roger Crawford, all of New Castle; granddaughters, Ila Chris DeHart Rye of Blacksburg, Carla Jo DeHart (and husband Randall) Whitaker of Harrisburg, Pa., and Kelly Amanda Crawford (and husband Aubie) Light of Salem; great-grandchildren, Randall Brenton and Reagan Carl Whitaker of Harrisburg, Pa., Ethan Alexander Light of Salem and Victoria Elizabeth Johnston of New Castle; nephew, Steven Allen Carper; nieces, Janie Elise Carper Akers and Marta Bea Carper Bostic; foster sister, Cathleen Carper Knuth (Mrs. Reuben) of New London, Wisconsin and her children, Janis Fuerst, Marta de Venecia, Mary "Chris" Cook, Kathy Thompson and Otto Earl Knuth;and foster daughter, Katherine Woods (and husband Cyrus) McCormick, and children Pamela and Samuel.
