SHUPE, Janet Whisman

Janet Whisman Shupe, 69 passed away Friday October 21, 2005 at her home in Marion. She was born June 6, 1936 in Sugar Grove, Va. to the late Clarence R. and Ruth Currin Whisman and was preceded in death by a sister, Patty Whisman. She attended Marion College and retired from the Southwestern State Hospital in 1991. Survivors include her husband, John P. Shupe; two sons and a daughter-in-law, John P. Shupe, Jr. and Cathy, Charlottesville, Va., Jeffery L. Shupe, Marion; granddaughters, Monique Shupe-McCray, Casey Shupe; great-grandsons, Cole Jones, Reilly McCray; brothers and sisters-in-law, Douglas and Katherine Whisman, Roanoke, Odell and Darlene Whisman, Fort Chiswell, Va.; very special aunt and uncle, Sue and Herbert Skinner, Lynn, Mass., Bethel Currin, Roanoke; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday October 24, 2005 from the Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel, Marion, with Pastor Dan Jividen officiating. Interment icon will follow in Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat, Va. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions can be made to the Virginia Hospice, P.O. Box 257, Rural Retreat, VA 24368. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.bradleysfh.com. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. HICKMAN, Clarence Stuart

Clarence Stuart Hickman, 48, of Whitpain, Pennsylvania, formerly of Lexington and Buena Vista, passed away June 9, 1962. Graveside 2 p.m. Tuesday in Green Hill cemetery, Buena Vista. Arrangements by Botetourt Funeral Home.

TOLLEY, Ina Jean Oakes

Ina Jean Oakes Tolley, 71, of 725 Bridge St., Eden, N.C., died Saturday, October 22, 2005 at Brian Canter of Eden. Mrs. Tolley was born in Franklin County, Va. to the late Tommy Joe and Daisy Mae Rigney Oakes. Ina was a member of Boone Chapel in Franklin Co. and attended Osborne Baptist Church. Mrs. Tolley is survived by her daughters, Margie Jean Arrington of Eden, N.C., Brenda Lee Mooreman of Lynchburg, Doris Daw of Aransas Pass. Texas; sons, Howard Wayne Payne of Florida, Robert Wade Payne of Roanoke and John Hale; sisters, Mary Beasley and Jerlene Shook, both of Richmond, Judy Harris of Martinsville; brothers, Raymond Oakes of Hillsville, Va. and Bruce Oakes of California; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. There will be no formal visitation or funeral service.

DILLON, Betty A.

Betty A. Dillon, 75, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, October 22, 2005. She was a member of Hollins Road Church of the Brethren and was the widow of Marvin Stewart Dillon. Betty was the loving mother of five children, Pam Dillon, James Dillon and his wife, Susan, Gary Dillon and his wife, Sharon, Matt Dillon and his wife, Karen, Steven Dillon; numerous grandchildren, step grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a great lover of cats especially "Tigger". A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 24, 2005 at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. Horace D. Light officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, 982-2221.

AGEE, Mabel Willett

Mabel Willett Agee, of Willet Lane, Bent Mountain, passed away Wednesday December 14, 2005. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel, 989-3131.

GILLESPIE, Reginald Tennyson

Reginald Tennyson Gillespie, 63, of Buchanan, died Monday, December 12, 2005. A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 17 at 11 a.m. in the Trinity United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home, 14920 Lee Hwy, Buchanan, 254-3000.

GLOVER, Charlotte Ley

Charlotte Ley Glover, 90, of Roanoke County, died December 11, 2005. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she was born on June 27, 1915 to Charles A. Ley, M.D. and Lottie Sickman Ley. She attended Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham College) in Pittsburgh, Pa., where she graduated in 1936 with a Bachelor's degree in chemistry. She attended graduate school at the University of Pittsburg, where she earned a degree in library science. Following graduation, she was employed as a librarian at Carnegie Library in Pittsburg and later served for many years as engineering librarian at the Elliott Company in Jeannette, Pa. After her retirement, she worked as a volunteer in the library system and at the art museum in Birmingham, Ala. She was a devoted member of the altar guild at Christ Episcopal Church in Greensburg, Pa., and the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Birmingham. She was predeceased by her parents and by her husband, Harry Allen ("Sam") Glover. Survivors include a daughter, Charlotte McFalls of Pell City, Ala.; a son, Allen Glover and wife, Kathy of Roanoke; grandchildren, Kenneth McFalls and wife, Rhonda of Boones Mill, Va., Kristen Grant and husband, Eddie of Aiken, S.C., Bryan Glover and fianc?e, Ailie Olson of Atlanta, Ga., Ashley Glover of Roanoke, and Kyle Glover of Roanoke; great-grandchildren, Samuel McFalls and Sarah Katherine McFalls of Boones Mill, Va., and Kailey Grant and Joshua Grant of Aiken, S.C. The family will receive visitors at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, December 16, 2005. A memorial service will be held at Second Presbyterian Church, Dr. George C. Anderson presiding, on Saturday, December 17, 2005 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Roanoke Catholic School.

JONES, William D.

William (Bill) D. Jones, 71, of Salem Va., passed away Wednesday, December 14, 2005. Bill was born in Ivanhoe, Va. on February 15, 1934 to his parents, the late Garland R. and Flora S. Jones of Wytheville, Va. He was a 50 year member of the Ivanhoe Masonic Lodge #235. And was retired from USDA-Aphis with over 46 years of service. Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, Bobbie Lee Irvin Jones, of the residence; a daughter, Beth Fobare and her husband, Patrick; two grandchildren, Corey Scott Fobare and Chesley Anne Fobare all of Roanoke. Sister, Mary Frances Krunich and her husband, Ralph, Wytheville; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors. A Memorial Service celebrating Bill's life will be held on Sunday, December 18, 2005 at 2 p.m. in the Simpson Funeral Chapel, 5160 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, Va. with Pastor Michael Duvall officiating. Following the service, the family would like to invite everyone to stay for a time of visiting and fellowship. Flowers will be appreciated; however, the family requests that donations be made to The Good Neighbor Fund, C/O Roanoke Times, P.O. Box 1951, Roanoke, Va. 24008-1951 in memory of William "Bill" D. Jones. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the medical team and staff of Lewis-Gale Medical Center for their compassion and kindness. LEONARD, Blanche Clinebell

Blanche Clinebell Leonard, of Blue Ridge, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at the age of 88 after an eight year battle with Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease. She passed away peacefully with her daughter and son-in-law by her side. Blanche has resided at the Berkshire Healthcare Center for the last six years. She was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She spent the majority of her life loving and caring for her family for whom she cherished. Blanche adored children, spending time and teaching them hymns. She touched many hearts and many lives. Blanche was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis R. Leonard and her beloved son, Roy F. Leonard, who she loved deeply. Left to cherish her memories are a daughter, Linda L. States and husband, Buddy of Blue Ridge; daughter-in-law, Shelby Dudley Leonard of Blue Ridge; grandson, Tracy A. Dempsey of Blue Ridge; granddaughter, Tammy L. English and husband, Justin of Blue Ridge; two stepgrandchildren, Chuck States (Michelle) and Chad States (Tasha); five stepgreat-grandchildren, Shaelynn and Sage English, Lauren, Mason and Carmyn States; four brothers, Carl Clinebell, Wesley Clinebell, Raymond Clinebell and Harold Clinebell; and two sisters, Georgie Flowers and Evelyn Hall. The family would like to extend thanks and heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Berkshire for their care and kindness and making the family comfortable the last several days of Blanche's life. Thanks also goes to Good Samaritan Hospice, especially to Marvin, Lisa, Kathy, Andrea and Nicole. It was very heartwarming to have Lisa and Andrea by her side as she passed. A service celebrating Blanche's life will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, December 17, 2005 from the Lotz Vinton Chapel with the Rev. Marvin Barbre and the Rev. Dr. Philip Ayers officiating. Burial to follow in Glade Creek cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. at the Lotz Funeral Home, Vinton Chapel.

SUTPHIN, Virginia B.

Virginia B. Sutphin, 89, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, December 14, 2005 at Lewis Gale Medical Center. She was retired from Puritan Milles. She was preceded in death by sisters, Beatrice M. Sutphin and Violet G. Sutphin; brothers, Clement E. Sutphin and Warren R. Sutphin. Surviving are her sisters and brother-in-law, Alma S. and Earl E. Fetters, Roanoke, Golda B. Kanode, Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted 12 noon Saturday, December 17, 2005 at Lotz Salem Chapel with the Rev. John Furman officiation. Interment icon will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 Friday and 10 to 12 Saturday at the funeral home. Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Funeral Home, Salem.

WALKER, Otis Lee Sr.

Otis Lee Walker, Sr., 75, of Salem, passed away Wednesday, December 14, 2005. Funeral services will be conducted 12 noon Friday, December 15, 2005 at Lotz Salem Chapel.

WARD, Felix Jack

WEBB, James P.

James P. Webb, of Brandon Oaks, Roanoke, Va., formerly of Arlington, Va., died December 14, 2005, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rosalie Y. Webb. He was a member of Windsor Hills United Methodist Church. He was a cartographer for the U. S. Defense Department. He is survived by daughter Rosalind and son-in-law Dan Zahn; granddaughters, Michele Z. Richardson and Jennifer Z. Childress. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren. Donations may be made to the Rosalie Y. Webb scholarship, Mt. Olivet Foundation, 1500 N. Glebe Road, Arlington, Va. 22207. There will be no services.

WHITE, Robert L.

Mr. Robert L. White, 73, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, December 14, 2005. He was the son of the late Alex and Lousinda White, born January 4, 1932 in Mississippi. He had five sisters and two brothers. He served in the Korean War for four years. He went to New York in the late fifties where he worked as a welder. He met his former wife, Martha W. White in 1961 and to this union he leaves behind, four girls and one son. Those left to cherish his memory includes; Theleasa (Wayne) Sales of Bedford, Ga., Tina (Emanuel) Prunty of Newport News, Va., Regina Witcher of Greensboro, N.C., Hopenes (Eric) White of Odenton, Md.; and son, Noah White of Newport News, Va.; ex-wife, Martha White; six grandchildren, William, and Shalinda Witcher, Caleb White, Ambra, Prunty, Maite White and Giovanni Hinestroza and a host of other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held Saturday, 2 p.m. at Serenity Funeral Home, with the Rev. Quentin White officiating. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Memory of Robert White, c/o. 407C. WALDBAUER, Frederick Agate Sr.

Frederick Agate Waldbauer, Sr., of Bedford, died suddenly on Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at Bedford Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, December 16, 2005 at Tharp Funeral Chapel, Bedford with the Rev. Joel Wallschlaeger and the Liberty Masonic Lodge officiation. Burial will follow in Timber Ridge Baptist Church cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral in the Tharp Funeral Chapel. DYER, Clara Arlington Richardson

Clara Arlington Richardson Dyer, 97, a longtime resident of Radford, Va., passed away peacefully, December 14, 2005, at her home in St. Simons Island, Ga. She was born November 29, 1908 in Mountain Valley, Va. to John Bavell Richardson and America Delaware Eggleston Richardson. As the second eldest of eight siblings, she enjoyed a happy, active childhood and youth. In 1925, she graduated from George Washington High School in Danville, Va. where she was employed by L. Herman Department Store. She later managed the store's cosmetics department after studying under Elizabeth Arden in New York City. In 1929 she happily wed, Raymond Douglas Dyer and they started a family in the early 1930's. The Dyers moved from Danville to Christiansburg, and subsequently made Radford their home in 1947. Mrs. Dyer was devoted to her Lord, her family, her church and community. She taught children's Sunday School for more than 60 years, first at St. Pauls Methodist Church in Christiansburg, then at Grove Avenue, Grove United Methodist Church in Radford. She was active in countless church functions, sang in the church choir, served on various committees and avidly supported The Wesley Foundation. Mrs. Dyer provided abundant love and compassion to her family and community, she comforted the sick, cooked meals for the less fortunate and often led prayer circles for those in need. She set an extraordinary example by the way she lived and her grace and charm truly touched the lives of all who knew her. Mrs. Dyer is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Raymond Douglas Dyer, Sr.; and their two sons, Raymond Douglas Dyer, Jr., and Dennis Carroll Dyer. Her survivors include a daughter, Anne Louise Dyer; two sister, Louise Conway Richardson Vaughn and Anne Dillard Richardson Hodnett; and a brother-in-law, Roy Kent Hodnett, all of St. Simons Island, Ga.; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Raymond D. Dyer, Jr., of Blacksburg, Va.; six grandchildren, Raymond D. Dyer, and wife. Vincent Rawlings Dyer of Winston-Salem, N.C., Charlotte Dyer Dooley and husband Kirk Edward Dooley of Dallas, Texas, Scott Alan Dyer and wife, Stacey Holard Dyer of Grapevine, Texas, Sherri Anne Winkler and Ashley Louise Winkler of Darien, Ga., Jefferson Cook Winkler, of Costa Rica; and eight great-grandchildren, Douglas and Catherine Dyer, of Winton-Salem, N.C., Maggie and Kellis Dooley, of Dallas, Texas, Bayley Taylor and Connor Dyer of Grapevine, Texas, and Clara Louise Hawkins of Darien, Ga. Mrs. Dyer is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and their families. The family will greet friends and loved ones from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 18 at Grove United Methodist Church, 1020 Tyler Ave., Radford, Va. A memorial service will take place in the church sanctuary at 3:30 p.m. with the Rev James Bennington officiating, followed by interment at Sunrise cemetery in Christiansburg. KINGREA, Douglas Edward

Edward Douglas Kingrea, 61, of Christiansburg, passed away Sunday, December 11, 2005. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, December 17, 2005
(the date of the funeral changed due to weather) at the Horne Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ralph Parker and the Rev. Richard Kingrea officiating. Interment icon will follow in Huffville cemetery, Montgomery County, Va. The Kingrea Family is being served by Horne Funeral Service, Christiansburg, (382-2612).

MELENDEZ, Luis Vargas

Dr. Luis Vargas Melendez (Pep?), joined his beloved wife Silvia in the Kingdom of our Lord on December 14, 2005. Born February 14, 1927, the son of Luis and Victoria Vargas Melendez. He received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Chile and was then awarded a prestigious Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship to relocate to the United States. He began his U.S. research career at the University of Wisconsin and then moved to the Dept. of Microbiology at Harvard University where he rose through ranks and became a world renowned virologist. In 1974, Luis joined the Pan American Health Organization where he served an advisory role in directing South and Central American public health policies. Luis continued his public health work in Europe and then in 1984 joined the Faculty of the Virginia -Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine as Professor of Biomedical Sciences and retired in 1994. Luis is survived by his three sons and their families, Louis A. and Deborah Tatro-Melendez and their children, L. Alex and Kira from Southbridge, Mass.; Jose M. and Karen Fisher-Melendez and children Naval Ensign Kristina, Coast Guard Cadet J. Miguel and A. Kyle from Christiansburg, Va. and Drs. J. Andres and Pauline Carrico-Melendez and daughter Kacie from Albany N.Y.. Luis is also survived by his sisters Maruja Melendez, Mireya Ballart, Buty Huete of Santiago, Chile. A mass of Christian burial will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. on December 17, 2005 by Father James Arsenault, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 706 Harding Ave., Blacksburg, Va. The family will receive friends at a reception following the Mass. In Lieu of flowers, donations in his memory are requested to be sent to either: Holy Name Catholic Junior Senior High School, 144 Granite Street, Worcester, 01604; Street Teresa of Avila School, 8 Hollywood Ave., Albany, N.Y., 12208 or St. John Neumann Academy, P.O.
