Harry Cecil Curtis Jr.
March 13, 1921 - October 5, 2012

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. 2Timothy 4:7-8

The faithful warrior fought a good fight for ninety-one productive years and finished his course on Friday, October 5, 2012. The fulfilled life of Harry Cecil Curtis, Jr. embarked on March 13, 1921 in Stewartsville, Virginia as his parents, Harry C. and Martelia Curtis welcomed their first born child with thankfulness. Cecil was preceded in demise by his parents; also a wife of fifty-five years, Marilyn C. Curtis, daughter, Trevor M. Curtis and brother, Marshall Curtis.

Cecil received his education from Bedford County and Roanoke City Public Schools; graduated from Lucy Addison High School in 1940 and attended Virginia State College. He nobly served his country during World War ll and received an honorable discharge from the U. S. Army.

With a unwavering faith in God, he joined church at an early age and was a fifty-year plus member of High Street Baptist Church; served on the Trustee Board for more than thirty years.

“Mr. Cecil” as he was affectionately called was a businessman of courage and determination. At the young age of six, his dream was to become a funeral director or run a grocery store/ restaurant. His dream became a reality. In 1947, Mr. Cecil bought a lot and a building was constructed at the corner of 10th Street and Moorman Avenue which was the site of Roanoke’s first black drive-in-restaurant, “The Cozy Corner” and a two-chair barbershop. Success was great; however, his second dream appeared when he served his apprenticeship with C.C. Williams Funeral Home. In 1952, Cecil along with Lawrence H. Hamlar established the funeral business of Hamlar-Curtis. He completed the requirements of the Virginia Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors; passed the State Board Examination in 1955; was an active member of the Western District Funeral Directors Association, the Virginia Morticians Association (Man of the Year-1999). He was recognized in 2005 by the Virginia Funeral Directors Association as a Fifty-Year Golden Licensee.

What manner of man is this? He was a philanthropist to local organizations and individuals throughout his life. Just to mention a few of his other attributes are: member of the Altruist Club, YMCA Family Center; recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letter from the Bethlehem Bible College and the “Key to the City of Roanoke.” His hobbies were “cars” and a friendly game of Poker every week with his poker buddies, the 52 Club. He was a mentor to many young people; his advice to them was: “to learn two trades in your voyage of life.” This humanitarian always had a smile, ready for conversation and eager to help anyone in need. His motto was: “Cornbread and Beans to Stretch Limousines.”

A limb has fallen from the family tree, his presence on earth will be a void in our life; however, his legacy will forever be engraved in our hearts. With the love of God in and around us, we humbly bow to The Master’s Plan. Precious memories of Cecil’s rewarding life are to be treasured by his children, Saundra (Robert Sr.) Eaves, Desoto, TX, Cecil-Maria Curtis-Otey, Roanoke, H. Clarke “Duke” (Patricia) Curtis, Roanoke, Ceasar (Viola) Hancock, Rowlett, TX, Beatrice Jones, Germany, and Charles “Chuck” (Stephanie) Patrick, Roanoke; a host of grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren; special nieces, Nickey (Byrl Sr.) Wright, Roanoke and Charlene Curtis, Winston-Salem, NC; nieces, nephews and other relatives. Caring Thanks to the Staff of Dr. Quasir Raza, Dr. Christopher Hick, Dr. Nelson Green, Dr. Conrad Claytor, VA Hospital Doctors, Dr. Steven Goldstein, 3rd and 5th Floors of Lewis Gale Hospital, Apria and Gentiva Medical Services, LOA, Staff of Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home and many, many devoted friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be noon Friday, October 12, 2012 at High Street Baptist Church, 2302 Florida Avenue, NW, Roanoke, VA 24017 with Rev. David L. Chapman as eulogist and Rev. Ulas N. Broady, officiating. Interment icon will be at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem, Va. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 11, 2012, at High Street Baptist Church.
