Stafford L. (Buddy) Weld, 98, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2005. Buddy graduated from Virginia Tech in 1928, then went on to serve in the US Navy in WWII. He retired from Crystal Spring Laundry and Dry Cleaners as their president in 1970. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy B. Weld; and a daughter, Rena Weld Wheeler. He is survived by sons, Stafford L. Weld, Jr., of Roanoke, and John B. Weld, of Concord, N.H.; daughters, Nancy W. Wise, Salem, and Mary W. Schipper, Salome, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. WHITLOW, Kathleen Dudley
Kathleen Dudley (Kathy) Whitlow, 76, of Roanoke and formerly of Rocky Mount, died Tuesday, December 27, 2005. She was retired from The Lane Company in Rocky Mount and was a former member of Rocky Mount United Methodist Church. After moving to Roanoke, she moved her church membership to Greene Memorial United Methodist Church. Mrs. Whitlow was born September 25, 1929, a daughter of the late William Allen and Elsie Allman Dudley. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Flora D. Ramsey. Mrs. Whitlow is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Richard S. Whitlow, of the home; her son and daughter-in-law, Michael Scott and Laura Whitlow, Roanoke; daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Jack Brundage, London, England, Janet and Ted Rhodes, Bridgewater; and daughter Kimberly Whitlow and friend, Gary Mundrake, Centreville, Md.; nine grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, William H. Dudley, Glade Hill, D. Clark and Susan Dudley, Sevierville, Tenn.; sister and brother-in-law, Mary H. and Carl R. Wood, Bridgewater. A memorial service celebrating her life will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel, 665 South Main Street, Rocky Mount at 3 p.m. Friday with Dr. Bernard Via and the Rev. R. Jack Brundage officiating. A private burial will be held in High Street cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Whitlow had requested that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, the Arthritis Foundation, or to the American Lung Association. Elizabeth Anne Garrett, 84, of Rocky Mount, passed away December 27, 2005 at Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital. She was born July 16, 1921 in Cleveland, Va. to the late Edmond K. Garrett, Sr. and Daisy Johnson Garrett. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Lena G. French; and four brothers, Bobby B. Garrett, Edmond K. Garrett, Jr., Alfred E. Garrett, and Calvin H. Garrett. She is survived by two brothers, Marshall Garrett of Ft. Blackmore, Va., Roger Garrett and wife Mary of Abington, Va.; a sister-in-law, Shelby G.Dix, of Rocky Mount, Va.; four nieces and four nephews. A graveside service will be conducted from Ketron Memorial cemetery, Lebanon, Va. Steven Andrew Hinkley, 44, of Radford, beloved son and brother, went to his heavenly home on December 26, 2005. He was preceded in death by his brother, Arnold W. Hinkley, Jr. He is survived by his loving parents, Arnold and Louise Hinkley of Radford; his sisters and their husbands, Judy and Gilbert Miles, Kay and Mitchell Viers, all of Radford, Carolyn and Fred Gilbert of Pulaski, Wanda and Ernest Hamilton, and Linda Lawson, all of Christiansburg. Also surviving are two special nephews, Lee and Jason Miles; nephews, Justin Gilbert, John Hamilton and Matthew Lawson; nieces, Cindy Shelton, Becky Viers, Melissa Mabry, Carrie Tucker, Michelle Lawson, Kim Lowery, and Rhonda Kovatch. Ada Pierce Pinkard Ratcliffe, known to many as Maw Maw, 78, a lifelong resident of Caseknife Ridge Road, Pulaski, passed away Sunday, December 25, 2005 in the Pulaski Community Hospital. She was born in Pulaski on March 21, 1927 and was the daughter of the late Claude James Pinkard and Hattie Shelton Goad. She was also the stepdaughter of the late Peyton Goad. She was also preceded in death by her husband, of 51 years, Charlie Robert Ratcliffe and her firstborn granddaughter, Ashley Rebecca Ratcliffe. Surviving are four sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Danny and Patty Ratcliffe, Pulaski, Ronald and Sandra Ratcliffe, Radford, Donnie F. Ratcliffe, Pulaski, and Richard W. Ratcliffe, Pulaski; four daughters, Linda R. Ayers, Pulaski, Sherry R. Wolfe, Pulaski, Alice (Becky) O'Dell, Patrick Springs, Eva R. Dickson, Martinsville; 14 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. A graveside service was held Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Goshen cemetery in Little Creek, Bland County with Pastor George Gorman officiating. Margaret Virginia Rice, 79, of Rich Creek, formerly of Pembroke, departed this life Wednesday evening, December 28, 2005 at Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Born in Bland County on September 17, 1926 she was a daughter of the late William Clarence and Hazel Lambert King. Margaret was of the Holiness Faith and was preceded in death by her husband Frank M. Rice and a son Jimmie Rice. She leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Stevie Rice of Pembroke and Ronnie Rice of Rich Creek; two daughters, Elizabeth (Sissie) Rice of Rich Creek and Doris R. Austin of Pearisburg; ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Helen Smith and Betty Jean Keith, both of Bluefield. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke with burial following in the McClaugherty cemetery in the Clendennin Community near Narrows.
