Returning to Rocky Mount, she worked for Attorney Brady Allman prior to her marriage in 1948 to Ulis Noel Chitwood. Geraldine contracted polio at three years of age, and though its effects stayed with her throughout her life, it was not until the last fifteen years that it began to get the better of her. Until then, "go" was her middle name. Her father had taught her to drive a 3-speed car as a teenager and physical limitations never stopped her until the very end. Music was the joy of her Life, and as a member of the Rocky Mount Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) she sang in the choir until she was unable to physically get into the choir loft. Never a television fan, she opted instead for a portable CD player with headphones where she listened to great singers such as Charlie Pride and Norah Jones. She spoke of her fascination with Cousin Frank Gravely's piano playing, climbing up on the piano bench with him when she could barely reach the bench. (Frank played at the Hotel Roanoke in those days) Music and getting out of town always made her happy. Geraldine is survived by her husband, Ulis Noel Chitwood; sister, Jeannette G. Peters (Dennis) of Pinehurst, N.C.; son Noel L. Chitwood (Cindy); daughter, Paulette Chitwood; two grandchildren, Alexandra Lee Chitwood and William Noel Chitwood, all of Franklin County.
