Julie Ann Hurst, 53, of Roanoke, went to be with her Lord on Monday, August 29, 2005. She was predeceased by her father, James C. Hurst, Jr. Julie was school secretary of Round Hill Montessori Primary School. She was an active member of Green Ridge Baptist Church. Surviving are her mother, Sara Stanley Hurst; sisters, Susan Thompson of Roanoke and Cathy Skelley of Salem; two nephews, Gary Thompson and wife, Anastasia and Mark Skelley and wife, Chelsea; a niece, Jessica Baldwin and husband, Jody; and a greatniece, Abigail Leigh Thompson. Memorials may be made to Green Ridge Baptist Church, 5521 Green Ridge Road, Roanoke, Va. 24019. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at Oakey's North Chapel. LOWRY, Juanita Coleman

Juanita Coleman Lowry, 63, of Vinton, Va. went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, August 29, 2005. She was born October 15, 1941 in Rockbridge County. Juanita was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister and a friend to many. Surviving are her parents, Herbert and Myrtle Coleman of Buena Vista; her husband, Clinton M. Lowry of Vinton; her children and their spouses, Romonda and Roger Bartley of Vinton, Angie and Roger Dudley of Vinton, and Clinton Lowry, II and wife, April of Ft. Myers, Fla.; grandchildren, Brittny Bartley, Nathan Dudley, Ethan Lowry and Emma Lowry; four brothers and seven sisters; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, September 1, 2005, at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. MENEFEE, Dreama Dudley

Dreama Dudley Menefee, 60, of New Castle, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2005. She was a long time teacher at Salem High School. Dreama is survived by her husband, Roy G. Menefee; mother, Norma B. Dudley, Roanoke; brothers, Glenn Dudley, Staunton, Rodney Dudley, Christiansburg, Robin Dudley and fiancee, Ellen Genova, Charleston, S.C.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Mick and Cindy Smith-Copper Hill, Walter and Pat Menefee, Roanoke; also numerous nieces. Memorial services will be held 12 noon Wednesday, August 31, 2005, at Bethel United Methodist Church, Rt. 42 with the Rev. Lowell Stovall and the Rev. Randall Blankenship officiating. MOSLEY, Kenneth Walter

Kenneth Walter Mosley, 57, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, August 26, 2005. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruben and Mildred Mosley; three brothers and one sister. Survivors include his wife, Elaine Mosley; stepson, Richard R. Williams of Roanoke; four brothers, Willie, Emmett, Raymond Mosley all of Buckingham County, Va. and Jeff Mosley of Richmond, Va.; four sisters, Helen (Andrew) Jackson of Roanoke, Margaret Miles of Dillwyn, Va., Charity (Zacke) Allen of Buckingham County, Mildred "Jane" Allen of Roanoke; a host of other relatives and friends. A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 3, 2005, 1 p.m. at Pilgrim Baptist Church with the Rev. Dwight Steele officiating. Interment icon will follow in Williams Memorial Park. Cora Lee Willis Reedy, 86, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 28, 2005. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's North Chapel at 12 noon on Wednesday, August 31, 2005. Interment icon will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

SCHILLING, Liette Lorette

Liette Lorette Schilling, 64, of Roanoke, formerly of Galloway Township, N.J. was called into God's embrace on Tuesday, August 30, 2005 at her home after a brave battle against metastatic breast cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Helene Rioux and her daughter and "shadow", Helen E. Schilling. She is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 43 years, Wilfried A. Schilling; daughter and son-in-law, Sylvie and Michael Peterson of Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Michel and Carol Schilling of Fredericksburg; and five grandchildren. Liette was born in Beaupre, Canada on March 6, 1941, the ninth of ten children. She spent her life as a devoted wife and nurturing mother, taking special care of her daughter Helen, through a lengthy terminal illness. Liette was a doting "Grandmaman" to her grandchildren. She fought bravely in the hopes of continuing to spend time with the grandchildren she loved and adored so much. Even in her final weeks she was more concerned about her family's health than her own. SCRUGGS, Tommy Lee

Tommy Lee Scruggs, 56, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2005. He was retired from Lionberger Construction and was a member of the AmVets Post #40, the Vinton Moose Lodge #1121, and the Eagles in Moneta. He was preceded in death by his mother, Hazel; his son, Christopher; his uncle, Bill Scruggs; and three step brothers, Morgan, Larry and Hershel Defibaugh. Tommy is survived by his loving wife, Gloria Jean Scruggs; his father and step mother, Bobby Lee and Oleta Scruggs; two step daughters, Jennifer Callahan and her husband, Thomas, Janet Love; two step sons, Jeremy Arthur, Jason Arthur and his wife, Lisa; four step sisters, Linda Overstreet and her husband, Howard, Gloria Gibson and her husband, Cecil, Phyllis Defibaugh, Narvella Maxie and her husband, James; two step brothers, Sidney Defibaugh and his wife, Patricia, Nelson Defibaugh and his wife, Cynthia; five step grandsons, Travis, Dustin, Austin, Quintin, Logan; two step granddaughters, Siera and Jesica. A funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at Oakey's Vinton Chapel with the Rev. Denver Turner officiating. Interment icon will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. SPECK, Raymond Walter

Raymond Walter Speck, of Roanoke passed away Wednesday August 30, 2005. Mr. Speck was a retired engineer from Grumman Aerospace in New York, where he was a part of the engineering team that designed the Lunar Landing Module, the first vehicle that landed on the moon. He also served honorably as a Lieutenant in the bombardier squad in the Army/Air force during World War II. Mr. Speck is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Rosemary; two children, daughter, Eileen; her son, Joseph Cantone and two great grandsons, Alexander and Luke; his son Raymond, wife Lorinda and their two children Adam and Salina. He is also survived by a step grandson, John Beverly. Mr. Speck was preceded in death by his step daughter, Janet Beverly and step granddaughter Kelly Hitchen. Funeral services will held at Oakey's East Chapel 12 noon Saturday September 3, 2005 with Pastor Harry Miller, Jr. officiating. Entombment will be in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. STEWART, William R.

William R. (Bill) Stewart, 82, of Vinton, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 28, 2005 with family by his side. He was a veteran of the US Army and retired from the Norfolk & Western Railroad. He was born March 27, 1923, the son of the late William R. Stewart and Martha McLaughlin Stewart. Bill was also predeceased by his wife, Iva Christine Shepherd Stewart. Survivors include one daughter, Deborah S. Olmstead and husband, Gerald of Goodview; a granddaughter, Stephanie M. Olmstead and fianc?, Daniel Botts; one sister, Dorothy Mihia of Lexington; also one niece, Margie. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 1, 2005 from the Lotz Vinton Chapel with the Rev. Joseph Peters and the Rev. George Law officiating. WHITTEN, Clara M.

Clara M. Whitten, 69, of Roanoke, departed this life on August 28, 2005 after a long illness. She was born October 23, 1935 in Bedford, Virginia to the late Haywood and Amelia English. She attended Bedford County Schools. Later she married Claude Whitten, who preceded her in death. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Bernice Mayo, Mamie Whitten, Ethel Goode and three brothers, Matthew English, Joseph English and Adnor English. Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Doris Whitten and Vivian Witcher, both of Roanoke, Va.; three sons, Claude Whitten of Roanoke, Va. and Jimmy Whitten and John Whitten of Moneta, Virginia; four grandchildren; one greatgrandchild; two brothers, John (Jessie) English of Roanoke and Lester (Ollie) English of Moneta, Va.; two sisters, Gladys (John) Hancock of Salem, Virginia and Vonnie Harris of Roanoke, Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 3, 2005 at 12 noon at the Promise Land Baptist Church, Moneta, Virginia. WILKERSON, Nancy Elizabeth Dowdy

Nancy Elizabeth Dowdy Wilkerson, our loving mother, 80, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2005. She was born on January 25, 1925, to the late Howard and Pearl Dowdy. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Charles S. Wilkerson; daughter, Brenda; sisters, Thelma Price, Dorothy Meredith and brother, Alvin Dowdy. She is survived by her children, Charles, Jr. and and his wife, Marilyn Wilkerson, Rick and his wife, Sharon Wilkerson, Frank Wilkerson, Pam and her husband, Scott Furham and Lynn and his wife, Vickie Wilkerson and daughter in law, Sue Wilkerson. She is survived by her grandchildren, Allen and wife, Debi Wilkerson, Sarah and husband, Chris Pearson, Suzanne Wilkerson, Michael and Nancy Fuhrman, Amanda, Melissa and Megan Wilkerson; step grandson and wife, Michael and Teresa Daniel. She is also survived by great grandchildren, Lindsay and Sam Wilkerson, Lane and Katelyn Pearson, and step grandchildren, Devin and Morgan Daniel; sisters, Margaret Mitchell, Madeline Shaver and numerous nieces and nephews. Nancy was a graduate of Jefferson High School, class of 1943 and worked for the US Government in Washington DC during World War II. She spent her early years loving and nurturing her children and later enjoyed serving as a fashion coordinator at Smartwear Irving Saks. The family would like to express their gratitude to the nurses and staff on 8 South at Roanoke Memorial Hospital for their kindness and care during our mother' s stay. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, September 1, 2005 at Oakey' s North Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Robert G. Moore, III officiating. The interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. LATIMER, Mallie Nolen

Mallie Nolen Latimer, 94, of Rocky Mount, passed away at her home on Monday, August 29, 2005. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pierce B. Latimer, Jr. During her long life she was always active in Rocky Mount United Methodist Church and was long time member of the United Methodist Women and many other civic and community activities including a life member of Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Surviving are one son Pierce B. Latimer, III and his wife, Joan, Atlantic Beach, N.C.; two granddaughters and their husbands, Christy and Steve Sandy, Julie and Jon Davis; six loving great-grandchildren, Pierce, Will and Megan Sandy, Mallie, Grace and Nolen Davis. Funeral services will be conducted from Rocky Mount United Methodist Church 11 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Robert Edwards officiating. Entombment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park Mausoleum. PUTNEY, Elizabeth Harlow

Elizabeth (Splu) Harlow Putney, 83, of Goode, Virginia died Tuesday, August 30, 2005 at her home following a long illness. She was the loving wife of Lacey E. Putney for almost 55 years. Mrs. Putney was born in Big Island, Virginia July 15, 1922, daughter of the late Robert Carrington Harlow and Mary Louise Hudson Harlow. In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her sister, Rachel Harlow Giles. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her two children, a daughter, Susan Putney Powers and her husband, Eames A. Powers, Jr. of Goode, and a son, L. Edward Putney, Jr. and his wife, Laura Mason Putney of Virginia Beach. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Elizabeth Putney Powers of Goode, Amanda Burton Powers of Washington, D.C., Lacey Edward (Lee) Putney, III and Georgia Mason Putney of Virginia Beach and a number of nieces and nephews. She was graduated valedictorian from M.E. Marcuse High School, Big Island, Virginia. She was a long time member of Bedford Baptist Church, a former Girl Scout leader, served on the Board of the Bedford Public Library and was an active member of the Otterburn Garden Club for many years. Splu was devoted to her family and home, was an avid reader, gardener and lover of the outdoors. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to her dedicated caregivers, Rhonda Judd, Serena Painter, Virginia Robinson, Marie Sharpe and Jean White. Following a private graveside service at Spring Hill cemetery in Lynchburg, Virginia, there will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Friday, September 2, 2005 at the Bedford Baptist Church, Bedford, Virginia with Dr. David L. DOYLE, Carl I.

In loving memory of our father Carl (Lindy) Doyle of Christiansburg, Va. born on March 7, 1928 and went to be with his heavenly father on August 26, 2005. Carl was a retired Specialist Eighth in the US Army for 20 years. He served in Panama, France, and Vietnam. He continued to serve in the Civil Service at the Pentagon for 20 years as a program analyst. He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel E. Doyle; mother, Goldie Walters; and step father, Clarence Walters; his sister Janice Walters Harris; and sons Carl I. Doyle, Jr. and Robert Bruce Doyle. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Doyle of Christiansburg; his daughter, Susan Leigh Doyle of Pagosa Springs, Colorado; and his son, Thomas Edward Doyle of Hastings, Nebraska and his step son, Lance Hoffman of Christiansburg; his two sisters, Peggy Hurt of Riner, Va., and Patrica Waltlers of Christiansburg; his brothers and their wives, Clyde and Audrey Walters, of Selma, N.C., Cline (Chuck) Walters and Judy Walters of Blacksburg and Jim and Linda Walters of Christiansburg and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He had many accomplishments in this life. He never worried about little things and his primary love and concern was for his family and their care. We would like to thank Brenda and Lance for their loving care during his illness and to our immediate family for the love they have shown us. LINKOUS, Arnold Ralph

Arnold Ralph Linkous, 93, of Christiansburg, passed away Monday, August 29, 2005 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank J. and Mellie Bishop Linkous; four brothers, Frank, Jr., Kenneth, Archie and Steve; one sister Louise Helms, and his son, Arnold R. "Sonny" Linkous, II. He was a member of the Alleghany Church of Christ and a retired employee of the Virginia Department of Highways. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 70 years, Oveda Garnand Linkous; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Bob Parish of Mt. Airy, N.C.; Rita and Eddie Callahan of Dublin, Va.; and daughter-in-law, Susan Linkous of Spring City, Tenn.; grandchildren, Randy Parish, Waynesboro, Pa., Andy Parish, Rural Hall, N.C., Todd Callahan and Pam, Dublin, Va., DeAnne Callahan of Dublin, Darrell Linkous and Stephanie, Athens, Tenn., Farrah Linkous, Knoxville, Tenn., five greatgrandchildren, Jake and Jaxson Callahan, Katie Parish, Drew and Dillon Linkous; special family and friends, Randolph, Christine and Tony Morrison and Dawn Camacho. WILSON, Lillian Ida Alderman

Lillian Ida Alderman Wilson, 90, of Radford, passed away Monday, August 29, 2005 at Heritage Hall in Blacksburg. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church and a retired beautician. She was born on January 6, 1915 in Hillsville, the daughter of Charles R. and India Goad Alderman. On September 26, 1936 she married Arlie G. Wilson, a union which lasted 61 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Arlie Glenn Wilson and 10 brothers and sisters. Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Connie and Sonny Hoover and Betsy S. Albert, all of Radford; a son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Betty Wilson of Radford; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Charles and Debbie Hoover of Nazareth, Pa., Suzanne and Ben Turpin of South Riding, Jennifer and Bob Tarr of Baltimore, Md., Will and Kerri Hoover of Radford, Amy and Pete Reitmeyer of Austin, Texas, Jon and Monica Wilson of Pearland, Texas, Kelly and John Moss of Huntersville, N.C., and Wendy Albert and Tom White of Christiansburg; 16 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Grace Stoneman of Galax and Imogene Jennings of Polk City, Fla. The family would like to thank Wheatland Hills of Christiansburg and Heritage Hall of Blacksburg for all the good care provided for our mother and grandmother. BROWNING, Helen Marston

Helen Marston Browning, 91, of Natural Bridge, died Monday, August 30, 2005 in the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Lexington. Mrs. Browning was born on July 9, 1914 in Toano and was a daughter of the late Dandridge Warren Marston and Helen Virginia Smith Marston. She was a member of the Lexington Presbyterian Church and a veteran of the US Army, having served in World War II. Having achieved the rank of First Lieutenant, she was awarded the American Theatre Ribbon, ETO Ribbon, Rhineland Campaign, World War II Victory Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. Mrs. Browning is survived by her husband, Louis Eugene Browning, Col. Ret. of Natural Bridge; one daughter Maia Browning of Grand Canyon, Ariz.; two sons and daughtersin-law, Gene and Pat Browning of Natural Bridge, Warren and Celie Browning of New Orleans, La.; one granddaughter, Louise Zimmermann and husband, Paul; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Eliza McHenry of Lexington. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 2, 2005 at the Lexington Presbyterian Church with Dr. William Klein and the Rev. Robert Marston officiating. Burial will be private in the Stonewall Jackson cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Dunlap Auditorium of the church. GREER, Eackleane Elizabeth

Eackleane Elizabeth Greer, 80, of Chilhowie, passed away Monday, August 29, 2005 in the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn. She was born in Bluefield, Va. to the late Walter A. and Mary Jane Page and was preceded in death by her husband, Alexander "Doc" Greer and a son, Danny Greer. Mrs. Greer was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Marion. Survivors include her children, Connie Poston, Chilhowie, Ron Greer and wife, Diane, Marion, Debbie Mumpower and husband, David, Dublin, Frank Greer and wife, Debbie, Chilhowie, Randy Greer and wife, Karen, Marion and Pam Ratliff and husband, Luke, Chilhowie; daughter-in-law, Sandy Greer, Chilhowie; one brother, Glen "Bill" Page and wife, Coleen, Bluefield, Va.; grandchildren, Steve Poston, Tina Elizabeth Thompson, Heather Greer, Sara Mumpower, Joshua Mumpower, Travis Greer, Chad Alexander Ratliff, Kristy Gobble and Jeremy Greer; 10 greatgrandchildren; many friends including a special friend, Mary Osborne. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 31, 2005 from the Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel in Marion with the Rev. David Mumpower and the Rev. Herman Cress officiating. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Rose cemetery in Glade Spring. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. LAWSON, Minor Jackson

Minor Jackson Lawson, 79, of Lexington, died Sunday, August 28, 2005 in the Salem VA Medical Center. Mr. Lawson was born on August 10, 1926 in Rockbridge County and was a son of the late Arthur Lawson and Mabel Wilson Lawson. He was a member of the Rising Zion Baptist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the American Legion 291. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Garfield Lawson and two sisters, Juanita Lawson and Mabel Lawson. Mr. Lawson is survived by two nephews, Arthur G. Lawson and wife, Amanda of Lexington and Garfield Lawson, Jr. and wife, Linda and their daughter, Alicia of Wake Forest, N.C. A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 2, 2005 at the Harrison Funeral Chapel in Lexington.

MARSHALL, Ola Delene

Ola Delene Marshall, 92, of Galax, Virginia, widow of Howard Roy Marshall, died Tuesday, August 30, 2005 in Twin County Regional Hospital. She was born in Carroll County, Virginia on March 13, 1913 to the late Jeremiah and Rosetta Shepard Weddle. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Bobbie and Guy Crouse of Galax, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, B.W. "Billy" and Betty Marshall of Clifford, Va.; sisters-in-laws, Imogene Weddle of Galax, Va. and Agnes Marshall of Stuart, Va.; granddaughters and husbands, Brenda and T.J. Harmon of Galax, Va., Patricia and Mike Austin of High Point, N.C. and Becky and Butch Hogan of Bedford, Virginia; five great-grandchildren; four greatgreat-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held Friday, September 2, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Vaughan-Guynn Chapel. Interment icon will follow in Monta Vista cemetery with the Rev. Norman Goad officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home.
