PACK, Peggy Sparks
Peggy Sparks Pack, 70, of Fries, Virginia, died Monday, August 29, 2005 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. She was born in Fries Virginia on September 9, 1934 to William Earnest and Gladys Farmer Sparks. Survivors include husband, Harry L. Pack of Fries, Va.; daughters and son-in-law, Regina Pack Eller and Ray Eller of Galax, Virginia, Judith Rash of Roanoke, Va.; grandson, Tyler Rash of Roanoke, Va.; special aunt, Mary Shupe of Fries, Va. Graveside service Thursday at 11 a.m. at Fries cemetery with the Rev. Mike Duncan officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Fries United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to the Fries United Methodist Church, the Fries Volunteer Fire Department or the Fries Rescue Squad.
PENDLETON, Claude Swanson
Mr. Claude Swanson Pendleton, 87, of Ayers Orchard Road, Stuart, and formerly of Elamsville, passed away Monday, August 29, 2005 at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart. He was born in Patrick County on January 22, 1918 to the late Abram V. Pendleton and Emma Foley Pendleton. In addition to his parents, Mr. Pendleton was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene Moran Pendleton; two brothers, Turner T. Pendleton and Theron "Pete" Pendleton; and four sisters, Ethel Pendleton, Lala Pendleton Shortt, Irene Pendleton Ward and Vada Pendleton Willis. He was a retired sawmiller and farmer. He took great pride in helping his son and grandson and their cattle and feed business, Performance Livestock and Feed Company. He was instrumental in consolidating the Fairview and Goodwill Churches of the Brethren to create the New Hope Church of the Brethren. He served as deacon, trustee and church treasurer. He was a faithful caregiver to his wife, Lorene, who had multiple sclerosis for 28, years. Mr. Pendleton is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Betty Pendleton of Lawsonville, North Carolina and Swanson and Pauline Pendleton of Roanoke, Virginia; three grandchildren, Jason and wife, April Pendleton of Lawsonville, North Carolina, Rachel Pendleton of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Michael Pendleton of Buchanan, Virginia; two greatgrandchildren, Samuel Mark Pendleton and Emma Jane Pendleton of Lawsonville; and one sister, Alphalene Pendleton Ashby of Newport News, Virginia. Funeral services for Mr. Pendleton will be held Thursday, September 1, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Pastors Rick Randall and Mike Varner officiating. Burial will follow in Patrick Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. Muriel Ellen Hodges Kay, 90, of Salem, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2005. She was formerly of Rochester, New York and Cleveland, Ohio, and was preceded in death by her husband, Edmund J. Kay. Mrs. Kay was an avid gardener. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn Kay Young and Sek-Man Young; grandchildren, Kent Young and wife, Alex Haskell Young, Kay Young; half brother, Jim Hodges, Sonora, California; also, cousins in England and Australia. Martha (Kathy) Rice Rademacher left this earth after 23 years of battling Multiple Sclerosis and associated disease on Tuesday, April 5, 2005. She was born on April 26, 1920, the daughter of James H. and Helen V. Rice. Kathy was a 1937 graduate of Jefferson High School. She earned 2000 hours of volunteer service at the Fairfax Hospital in Northern Virginia before being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. She was a loyal member of Colonial Avenue Baptist Church. She is survived by a loving husband of 63 years, James H. Rademacher, PresidentEmeritus of the National Association of Letter Carriers (AFL-CIO); son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Kathy Rademacher, New Zealand; daughter, Linda C. Rademacher, Herndon, Va.; grandchildren, John S. Chapman, VI and wife, Courtney, Fishersville, Va., Lisa and Debbie Rademacher, New Zealand; great-grandchildren, Rio, Josie and Joshua of New Zealand, Dereck and Conner Chapman, Fishersville, Va.; brothers, John T. Rice, Vinton, Philip Rice and wife, Joyce, Grand Blanc, Michigan; sisters, Helen Ridgeway and Audrey Horsley, Roanoke, Elizabeth Rice, Vinton. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. Sterling Waller Slayton, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, April 4, 2005. Sterling was born in Halifax, Virginia to Charles and Bettie Waller. She was a graduate of Roanoke Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and attended Roanoke College. Prior to retirement, she was a registered nurse for Roanoke College and was a charter member of Airlee Court Baptist Church. She was also a longtime member of the Williamson Road Chapter #119 Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband of 60 years, William Kermit Slayton. Surviving are her nephew and care giver, Ron Waller; brothers, Curtis (Virginia) and Swanson (Jeanne) Waller, both of Midlothian, Va., Drewry (Pauline) of Greenville, N.C.; sister, Blanche Betts of Elgin, Ill.; sister-in-law, Lois McConnell of Roanoke; brother-in-law, Billy (Joyce) Slayton of Farmville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest Benjamin and Lillian Watson Wilhelm Lyle; her beloved husband of 59 years, Joe Eldridge Stinnett, Sr.; infant grandson, Brian Keith Stinnett; daughter, JoAnn (Poogie) Spangler; stepgrandson, Jammie Curt Fridley; one sister, Florence (Neice) Bryant; brothers, Ivan, Charles Lama, and Carroll Lyle. She was well loved and appreciated by her family, especially for her Sunday suppers at the family home. VURNAKES, Peter Emmanuel
Peter Emmanuel Vurnakes, 83, went to be with the Lord April 5, 2005. He was born in Roanoke on May 19, 1921, and managed the local family business "The Manhattan Restaurant" after his father's death. He was a former President of the Local Chapter of AHEPA at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. He was a former Shriner and a Mason. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1943, and was an avid sports fan. He is preceded in death by his parents, Emmanuel and Helen Vurnakes and two sisters, Vasiliki and Sophia Vurnakes. He is survived by his aunt, Elizabeth Mackris of Newport Richey, Florida. Two brothers, Nicholas Vurnakes and wife, Arlene K. of Roanoke and James Vurnakes and wife, Maria of Waukesha, Wisconsin and their two children, Michael Vurnakes and Elene Vurnakes of Wisconsin. He is also survived by his daughter, Denise Stewart and her husband, Jimmy and three grandchildren, James Peter "JP" Nicholas and Samuel Stewart of Roanoke; and in-laws, Jim and Alyce Stewart and a special cousin, Bertha Christofis, all of Roanoke. He had many friends but one very special friend who was like a son and helped to care for him, Douglas Miller of Roanoke. Funeral Services will be held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 30 Huntington Boulevard NE, Roanoke on Saturday, April 9, 2005 at 11 a.m., with Father Dean Nastos officiating. Interment
