Barbara Gusler Wertz, 94, of the Brandon Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Roanoke, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, April 5, 2005. She was the widow of James Lewis Wertz and was also preceded in death by her parents, William and Nannie Gusler; a grandson, Jay Preston Meredith; 15 brothers and sisters. She worked side by side with her husband for many years at Wertz Florist. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Martha Sue Meredith and David Meredith of Roanoke; granddaughters, Jill Meredith Vincent and husband, Sam Vincent of Salisbury, Md., Jackie Meredith Meador of Roanoke; great-grandchildren, Kara and Alan Meador of Roanoke; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and George Marsh; sister-in-law, Ruby Gusler, all of Roanoke; also a number of nieces and nephews. A rich life, full of love and goodness has been fulfilled. Graveside funeral services will be in the Chapel of Light Mausoleum at Evergreen Burial Park, 11 a.m. Friday, April 8, 2005 with Dr. Tom Stocks officiating. YURICH, Mike Sr.
Mike Yurich, Sr., 79, of Salem, passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2005. He was born in Page, W.Va. and was retired from Carter Machinery. He was a member of the American Legion and served in the US Navy from 1939 until 1943. He was an outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. He was predeceased by sons, Michael and Stanley Yurich; parents, Josephine and John Yurich; and a sister, Anne Logue. Surviving family include his wife, D. Jean Yurich; grandson, Michael Yurich of Salem; sisters, Frances Raynes of Kincaid W.Va. and Mildred Robin of Ontario, Canada; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 8, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Chapel in Salem with Rev. Rick Elmore officiating. Interment

Luther Fields, 80, of Moneta, Va., passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2005. He was born March 26, 1925 in Hazard, Kentucky, the son of the late Walter Fields and Laura Whitaker Fields. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Fields, Catherine Fields; and two brothers, Carlos Fields and Miller Fields. Mr. Fields was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in World War II. Surviving are his wife, Janet Fay Protzman Fields of Moneta; two sisters, Thelma Hopcroft of Moneta, Jessie Hacker of Moneta; two sisters-in-law, Carol Fields of Indianapolis, Indiana, Doris Fields of Greensburg, Indiana; nieces and nephews, Jerry Hacker, Laura Lee Hacker, Steven Hacker, Mike Fields, Melvin Fields, Kevin Fields, Jacqueline Sue Griffin, Russ Fields, Lori Fields; special son, Danny Masterson and family. Funeral services will be conducted 8 p.m. Thursday night at Lotz Vinton Chapel with the Rev. Larry Atkin and the Rev. Jerry Hacker officiating. SCOTT, Marc S.
Marc S. Scott, of Huddleston, on April 2, 2005, Marc Stratton Scott passed away in the presence of his Lord and his family at his beloved "Farm" in Huddleston, Va. He is survived by his wife, Penne Rude Scott (Marriage January 1973); his daughters, Jessica Scott and husband, Seth Williams of Huddleston, Va., Erica Scott of Roanoke, Va.; his son, Cameron Scott, of Arlington, Va.; three siblings, Blake Scott and Deborah of Evington, Va., Craig Scott and Debra of Merritt Island, Fla., and Jan Comstock and Edward of Fairfax, Va.; and nieces and nephews, Laura, Seth, Kyle, Shannon, Jamie, and Austin. Marc was born on November 11, 1941 to Earline and Norman Scott in St. Louis, Missouri. When he was 14 years old, his family moved to Karachi, Pakistan, beginning his lifetime of living and working overseas. He traveled extensively or lived in more than 45 countries including Zimbabwe, Angola, South Africa, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Haiti, Turkey, England, and Sri Lanka. He began his professional life as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ethiopia, moving to Peace Corps Washington staff, returning to Ethiopia with Project Hope, serving as a Dean at Texas Tech, with CUNA credit unions in Haiti, and employed by USAID (United States Agency for International Development) from 1980 until present both as direct hire and as a consultant contractor. The wide scope of his work included areas such as infrastructure development, post-war reconstruction, disaster relief coordination, landmine removal and democratic and agricultural initiatives, always with a focus on human rights and human dignity. His legacy and purpose live on in the works he established and fought for. He was humbly honored to work alongside many intensely dedicated and brave people. At home, Marc's passion and his dream was his "Las Palomas Farm." Nearly all time apart from work was spent at home working on or planning gardens, orchards, woodpiles, chicken broods, and the like. He most loved time at home with family. He attended Grace Evangelical Free church for the past several years. The earth will welcome Marc's ashes into her protective soil at the special spot that he chose on his farm. The family would like to thank the neighborhood community for their many many acts of service during Marc's difficult illness. On Saturday, April 9, 2005, the family will receive visitors from 1 to 3 at their home, 1660 Island Creek Road, Huddleston, Va. Outdoor memorial service directly following at 3 p.m. at the home. A second memorial service will be held in Washington, D.C., date and time to be announced. WILLIAMS, Louise Holmes
Mrs. Louise Holmes Williams, went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 4, 2005. She was born in Bedford, Va., on June 26, 1908. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Lee Williams. "Aunt Louise," as she was affectionately called by all the children in her Bedford Community, was a lifetime member of the Shiloh Baptist Church, Bedford, Virginia. She sang in the church choir and was involved in many activities within the church until her health failed. Those left to cherish her memory are four sisters, Mattie Wright, Julia Higginbotham (her loving caretaker), and Jean Harrison, all of Roanoke, Reva Blanchard of East Orange, N.J.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2005 at 1 p.m. at the Bedford Funeral Home Chapel. Interment

STONE, James Dillard
James Dillard Stone, 82, a longtime resident of Christiansburg, died on Tuesday, April 5, 2005. He leaves his beloved wife of 61 years, Lura Dean Vest Stone. Dillard was a Veteran of World War II decorated with the Bronze Star and was a Prisoner of War. He was a member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War, Roanoke Chapter, the Christiansburg Fire Department for 31 years, and a retired Lab Technician with the Radford Arsenal. He faithfully served the Lord at St. Paul United Methodist Church since 1952. Dillard was preceded in death by his parents, Adolphus and Lila Stone and twin, Adolphus Hillard (Jack) Stone, who died in World War II. Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Don Parker of Blue Ridge; and granddaughters, Angela Leonard (Alan) of Blue Ridge and Lara Nichols (Mark) of Boca Raton, Fla. Papa also leaves five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Surviving siblings are Stella Lancaster and Alan Stone (Ruby) of Bent Mountain and Mary Reba Craighead (Nelson) of Roanoke; in-laws, Tommy Ballard, Hubert Averette and Helen Vest. Mrs. Grose was born on September 20, 1913 in Swords Creek and was a daughter of the late General Lafayette Steele and Nora Herndon Steele. She was a member of the New Hope Assembly and was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Dewey Grose. Mrs. Grose is survived by one daughter, Agnes G. Johnson of Cedar Bluff; two sons, Andrew G. Grose and wife, Brenda of Lexington and Franklin L. Grose and wife, Wanda of Elkmont, Ala.; two brothers, Luther Steele of Akron, Ohio and Henry C. Steele of Salem; eight grandchildren, Steve White of Cedar Bluff, Frank White of Randallman, N.C., Pamela Price of Charleston, W.Va., Andrea Townley of Lexington, Elizabeth Sorrells of Lynchburg, Brian Grose of Chattanooga, Tenn., Andy Grose of Tanner, Ala. and Gary Grose of Athens, Ala.; 10 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
