PALMER, Claris Martha Vest
Claris Martha Vest Palmer, of Salem, peacefully departed her earthly life on May 18, 2006 for eternity with the Lord. Claris was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She maintained her sweet nature and good humor throughout her life. She was born on November 19, 1913. Claris was preceded in death by her husbands, Theodore Winfield Palmer and John Henry Palmer; three brothers, Carl T. Vest, Arthur (Drummy) Vest, Ralph M. Vest. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Doris Welch, Indianapolis, Ind.; her son, Wayne F. Palmer and wife, Linda, Salem; eight grandchildren, Robert (Bob) Welch and wife, Lynette, Llwana Finch and husband, James, Vernetta Johnson, Jaclyn Welch, Sherry Hazelton and husband, Barry, Treva Moring and husband, Bob, Jacob Palmer and Sarah Palmer; one brother, Paul J. Vest, Roanoke. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006, at the chapel of John M. Oakey and Son in Salem with Pastors Nicholas Shaffer and Marshall Allen officiating. Interment

PINCOCK, Dee Whitford
Dee Whitford Pincock of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2006. He was born on February 6, 1918 in Madison County, Idaho to George Sanford and Luamelia Dalling Pincock, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded by an infant son. Dee graduated from George Washington University Law School in 1945. He was a member of the District Bar Association, the Circuit Court of Appeals of the District of Columbia, the Supreme Court of the United States, and the Maryland Bar Association. He worked for 37 years for the F.C.C. in Washington, D.C., and retired in 1974. He has lived in Roanoke since 1988, and has served in various positions in Roanoke County Government. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Henderson Pincock; his son, Dee Whitford Pincock, Jr., and wife, Noelle of Silver Spring, Maryland.; his daughters, Cynthia P. Spencer and husband, Edward of Sandy, Utah, Sandra P. Johnson and husband, Richard of Germantown, Maryland. Dee's sister, Phyllis Harward of Tooele, Utah; his brothers, Lowell Pincock and wife, Karma of Thousand Oaks, California, Garth Pincock and wife. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends, all of whom will miss his good humor, generosity and compassion. There will be a viewing at Oakey's South Chapel from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 19, 2006. There will also be a viewing the following day on Saturday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 5836 Cotton Hill Road, Roanoke, Va. 24018, where the funeral service will follow at noon. Brenda Diane Poey, 56, of Salem, passed away May 18, 2006. Brenda loved life and enjoyed her family and friends. She loved her son, J.P.-he was her joy-and Brenda a joy for all who knew her. Brenda was a member of West Salem Baptist Church; she worked with the children and in the drama club though she hadn't been able to be in Church for some time. She also was affiliated with the Showtimers. Brenda had a medical transcription business in Salem for many years. Brenda fought a courageous battle against colon cancer for a year and a half before the Lord called her home. The family wishes to thank each and everyone that helped with Brenda, too numerous to mention, you were greatly appreciated, especially Interim Healthcare, Hospice, and Fort Lewis Fire and EMS. She is survived by her son, John (J.P.) Poey; mother, Doris Roupe; uncle, J.D. Gibson; two special people, Kenneth and Carol Gibson; a very special friend, Becky Rae; and many special cousins and friends. Michael Francis Connolly, 82, of Goodview, died Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at his home. Born April 11, 1924 in Jersey City, N.J., he was the owner of M. Connolly Roofing for 35 years. He was a U.S. Marine veteran, having served during World War II with 37 months in the Pacific Ocean. He was also a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Marine Corps Association. CRESSMAN, Charles P. Sr.
The Rev. Dr. Charles P. Cressman, Sr., 91, died Thursday, May 18, 2006 in Rocky Mount, Va. Born in Whitehaven, Pa. on June 16, 1914, he graduated from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa., and Mt. Airy Seminary in Philadelphia, Pa. He was ordained as a pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, and later earned his doctorate from the University of Pensylvania. Dr. Cressman served churches in Philadelphia and Lebanon, Pa.; Middletown, Ohio; Louisville, Ky.; Parkville, Md.; and Prospect, Pa. He was also a sociology professor at Wittenburg University in Springfield, Ohio, and retired from Grove City College in Grove City, Pa. after 22 years as professor and head of the Sociology Department. Following his retirement, he and his wife lived in Ocean City, N.J. and Sebring, Fla., before moving to Union Hall, Va. He was often in demand as a supply preacher in many areas. Most recently he was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Roanoke, Va. He will long be remembered for his warm smile, his compassionate heart for all, and his sweet spirit. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Anna Surbeck Cressman; and his three children: his son, Philip and wife, Linda; his daughter, Judy Monsma and husband, William, both of Union Hall, Va.; and his daughter, Lois King of Lake Placid, Fla. He also has seven grandchildren: Chip Cressman of Roanoke, Cindy Collins of Salisbury, Md., John Getty of Chicago, Debbie Hale of Orlando, Fla., Beth Tomblin of Sebring, Fla., Bill Monsma of Marysville, Ohio, and Chris Karabec of Hudson, Ohio; and 10 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4608 Brambleton Ave., Roanoke, Va. following the 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday, May 28, 2006, when the ashes will be placed in the columbarium of the church. Gary Elwood Hartman, 72, of Moneta, passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2006 following a valiant battle with cancer. He was born September 21, 1933, the son of the late Frank and Sallie Hartman. He married
Ruby Switzer, a union of 41 years. Mr. Hartman was the superintendent of Virginia Asphalt Paving Company for 35 years and the owner and operator of Gary Hartman Sand in Bedford County for 35 years. He was a long-time member of the Roanoke Valley H.O.G. Motorcycle Club. Mr. Hartman leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Ruby M. Hartman of Moneta; two sons, Bruce Hartman and wife, Bonnie of Roanoke, Frank Hartman and wife, Susan of Forest; two stepdaughters, Lynn Trent of Roanoke and Brenda Catron and husband, Bill of Vinton; and a stepson, Rodney Shell of Roanoke. Also surviving is a sister, Loretta Walls and husband, Raymond of Salem; a brother, Don Hartman of Danville; seven grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. His very good friends of many years, Grady Cox and Robert Belcher also survive him. SPANGLER, Elizabeth Hribal
Elizabeth Hribal Spangler, 84, of Pearisburg, passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. A lifelong musician, she was a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory of Music where she was a soprano soloist in the Oberlin Conservatory Choir. She was also a soloist in the Heights A Capella Choir in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and was a member of the Cleveland Philharmonic Chorus. After completing graduate work at Case Western Reserve University and the University of Virginia, she was professor of music at Hiwassee College, Emory and Henry College, and the American School in Cali, Colombia, South America. Most notably, she helped organize the music program in the Giles County Public School System, where she taught for 19 years. As a public and private instructor of voice, piano, organ, and numerous church choirs, she shared her love of music with young and old alike. Mrs. Spangler was a member of the Rainbow Girls? Eastern Star, Retired Teachers Association and the Woman's Club of Virginia, serving as district president and state chairman. She was also a member of the Pearisburg Presbyterian Church for 57 years, the Giles Country Club for 50 years, and helped organize the volunteers at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Spangler loved to read, play bridge and travel. She was preceded in death by her father, Dr. W.F. Hribal and mother Josephine J. Hribal of Cleveland, Ohio. She is survived by her husband, Marion Lee Spangler of Pearisburg; sons and daughters-in-law, Gregory Lee Spangler and Katherine Booker of Roanoke, Dr. Pat Wayne Spangler and Marguerite White Spangler of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; two grandsons, Dr. Marion Lee Spangler II of Westchester, N.Y., and Nicholas White Spangler of Grand Forks, N.D.; one sister, Ruth Hribal Klasek of Strongsville, Ohio; and a sister in-law, Helen Spangler Rucker of Troutville. Jones, of Roanoke, Va.; his mother, Debbie Pate, of Ohio; his sons, Jonathon Jones, Austin Jones, Levi Jones, Breaden Jones, and an unborn son, all of West Virginia; his brothers, Rob Jones and Fred Pate, both of West Virginia, and Jeremiah Jones and Joshua Jones, of Roanoke, Va.; his grandparents, Bob Jones and Ward Odell of West Virginia; and many friends and relatives too numerous to mention in West Virginia and Roanoke, Va. A private service is being planned by the family.

Marjorie T. Word, who passed away March 27, 2006 in Tampa, Florida will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church Christiansburg. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Phyllis Spiegle and Father F.C. Tatem. Interment
