Funeral services for Mary Winifred Brown will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Orange Presbyterian Church, with a graveside service at 3 p.m. that afternoon in Chestnut Grove cemetery in Herndon. The Rev. William Nickels will officiate.
The family will receive friends at a reception immediately following the service at Orange Presbyterian Church.

Joshua Daniel Cunningham/Batten, infant son of Charles Edward Batten and Crystal Jean Cunningham, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Joshua is also survived by his maternal grandparents, Carl and Diane Cunningham of Scottsville; and his paternal grandparents, Lois and Dale Kyser of Charlottesville.
A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday in Scottsville cemetery.

Grafton W. Dillard Jr.
Grafton W. Dillard Jr., 77, of Charlottesville, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at his residence.
Born Oct. 17, 1924, to the late Grafton and Mamie Dillard, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Walter M. Thurston and Ellis D. Dillard; and one sister, Margaret D. Dennis.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a dedicated employee of the University of Virginia Alumni Association for many years until his retirement.
He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife, Myrtle M. Dillard; three daughters, Doris Dillard Smith and her husband, John, of Charlottesville, Vernett Dillard of Alexandria, and Barbara Cotton of Forestville, Md.; one son, Roy G. Dillard of Philadelphia; one sister-in-law, Queenie B. Thurston of Charlottesville; three loving and devoted grandchildren, Natasha Scott, Isabel M. Williams, both of Charlottesville, and Maurice Jackson of Orange; five great-grandchildren; and a host of other beloved relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Zion Union Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles Smith officiating. Interment
will follow in Oakwood cemetery.
The family would like to extend special thanks the staff of Hospice of the Piedmont and Dr. Barbara Post for their compassionate and dedicated care over the course of his illness.

George Edward Haney Sr., 89, of Orange, died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at Culpeper Regional Hospital. He was the husband of Goldie H. Haney.

Elizabeth A. Kirby
Elizabeth Agnes “Betty” Kirby, 77, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Betty was born April 10, 1925, in the County of Dane in Madison, Wis., but she spent most of her life in the Charlottesville area.
She was the daughter of the late Leo and Lucille Welsh Brady. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 50 years, Harry L. Kirby.
She retired from Centel-Sprint after 22 years of service. Betty enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and performing volunteer work at Martha Jefferson Hospital and Holy Comforter Church, where she was a member. Her life centered around her church, her family, and helping others. She has left a legacy of selfless love, courage, humor, and dignity.
Survivors include her one brother and his wife, Richard and Barbara Brady of Harsaw, Wis.; her children and their spouses, Patricia and Dave Biller of Dale City, Susan and Greg Myers of Ellicott City, Md., Pamela and George Moyer of Barboursville, Jane and Tim Whitener of Raleigh, N.C., David and Betsy Kirby of Keswick and Daniel and Pam Kirby of Charlottesville; her grandchildren and their spouses, David and Kim Biller, David and Crystal Whitener, Jennifer and Ben Carver, Daniel and Deanna Hartwig, Mark Biller, Heather Johnston and her fiancé, Scott Robertson, Stephen Whitener, Michelle Hartwig, Melynda Moyer, Mariah Moyer, Ciera Kirby, Kyle Kirby, Jessica Kirby and Lauren Kirby; and her great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Brady, and Zachary Biller, Maddy and Hope Hartwig, Nico Nickels, Kristen Whitener and Emily Carver.
A Mass of the resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. this morning at the Holy Comforter Catholic Church, with Father Joseph Torretto officiating. Interment
will follow in Culpeper National cemetery.

Nellie Early Matthews
Nellie Louise Early Matthews, 84, passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2002, in Virginia Beach.
She was born March 17, 1918, in Charlottesville. She was the widow of Thomas L. Matthews Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Matthews and her husband, Richard A. Engel; a granddaughter, Kelly L. Engel, all of Virginia Beach; a grandson, Matthew D. and his wife, Allison Y. Engel, of Hampton; her sister, Virginia L. Turner of Hampton; and many nieces and nephews.
In 1960, Mrs. Matthews and her husband moved to Hanover County from Richmond where she became an elder in the Ashland Presbyterian Church. In October of 2000, she moved to Virginia Beach to be closer to her daughter.
Friends may call from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Reid Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Hwy. in Ashland.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Ashland Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at 2 p.m. that afternoon in Monticello Memory Gardens.

Athanassia Vandenberg
Athanassia “Ethel” Vandenberg, 78, of New Canton, died Sunday June 23, 2002, in Aiken, S.C.
Born Feb. 13, 1924, in Cambridge, Mass., she was the daughter of the late George and Evangeline Angelopoulos Niketopoulos.
Mrs. Vandenberg was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Columbia.
She is survived by her husband, Garry Vandenberg; one daughter, Geraldine Lanigan; one son, Gerard Vandenberg; and three grandchildren, Elena Vandenberg, Marc Vandenberg, and Connor Lanigan.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Columbia.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday morning from St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Columbia.

Nannie B. Wagner
Nannie Blackwell Wagner, 87, of Crozet, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at her residence.
She was born Sept. 18, 1914, in Augusta County, to the late Ellis Walter and Reccea Proffitt Blackwell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle A. Wagner; one brother, David Blackwell; four sisters, Frances Hurd Johnsrud, Mary Pace, Sally Mahanes, and Virginia Batton; a grandson, Greg Wagner; and a nephew, Scott Pace.
She is survived by her two sons, Lyle M. Wagner and his wife, Jean, of Crozet and John Q. Wagner and his wife, Kay, of Kailua, Hawaii; her sister, Irene Bryant of Waynesboro; her sister-in-law, Elizabeth Blackwell of White Hall; her nephew, Sam Pace; several other nieces and nephews; five grandchildren, David, Johnny, Brooke, Nathan, and Lezlie Wagner; and three great-grandchildren.
In her early years she worked for DuPont and later owned and operated Red Front Five and Ten Store in Crozet until her retirement.
She was a member of and very active in Crozet Baptist Church until her stroke in 1993. She was involved in Athletic Department activities at Western Albemarle High School in the 70s and 80s.
Her family would like to give special thanks to Joan Sullivan and Sue Simms, who gave her such devoted and loving care during her illness.

Helen Berkeley
Helen Berkeley, 94, of Charlottesville, died Friday, June 28, 2002, at her home. Born May 9, 1908, in Albemarle County, she was the daughter of Francis L. Berkeley and his wife, Ethel C. Berkeley.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Edmund, and her sister, Cynthia B. Williams.
She was a 1929 graduate of the School of Nursing at the University of Virginia, she practiced nursing in Charlottesville and elsewhere and became a member of the Eighth Evacuation Hospital in World War II, serving in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. In 1945, she retired as a U.S. Army Captain.
Survivors include her brother, Francis L. Berkeley Jr., and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services in Middleburg will be private.
