Donna Lee Bryant
Donna Lee Bryant, 53, of Afton, died Monday, July 1, 2002, at Mar-tha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville after a long illness.
Mrs. Bryant was born July 16, 1948, in Lynchburg, a daughter of Chesley J. Taylor and Margaret N. Fitzgerald.
Donna was a member of Hebron Baptist Church. She loved horses, dogs, and collecting dolls. She had a strong faith in the Lord and was very encouraging towards others.
Survivors include her husband, Gary W. Bryant; her father, Chesley J. Taylor of Massies Mill; her mother, Margaret Napier Fitzgerald of Roseland; one son, Anthony D. Small of Afton; one daughter, Kelly D. Via of Shenandoah; two grandchildren, Megan Via and Michael Via; and special friends, Ruth Terry and Belinda Via.
A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening at Reynolds Funeral Service of Waynesboro by the Rev. John Chafee and assisted by Pastor Whitney Critzer. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service.
The family would like to especially thank the members of the Rockfish Valley First Aid Crew for their kindness and caring during Donna Lee’s time of illness. The crew went well beyond the call of duty in caring for her.

Frank M. Griggs
Frank Meade Griggs went to be with Our Lord on Sunday, June 30, 2002.
Everyone who had the privilege of knowing him, loved him. He was a kind, considerate, faithful, loving and devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.
Born on Jan. 7, 1919, in Moneta, he was the son of the late John Franklin Griggs and Ruth Phelps Griggs of Big Island. He resided in Portsmouth for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 42 years, Marion Virginia Franklin Griggs; and his sister, Louise Griggs Wilson.
He was a member and the Honorary Treasurer of the Administrative Board of Centenary United Method-ist Church in Portsmouth.
He was a Naval Aviator during World War II and a retired employee of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He worked for the Federal Government for 35 years. He was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
He is survived by his two daughters and their spouses, Vir-ginia and Charles Vaden of Vinton and Betty and David Vaden of Earlysville; a son and his spouse, John and Debbie Griggs of Fairfax Station; eight grandchildren, Matthew and his spouse, Jennifer Vaden, Jason Vaden, Anna, Marian and Meade Vaden, and Paula, Justin, and Daniel Griggs; one great-granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Vaden, and one brother, William Robert Griggs of Burlington, N.C.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon in Centenary United Methodist Church, 3312 Cedar La., Portsmouth. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Louise Lawson for her many years of loving care and to Dennis, Joe, and Linda for the loving care given to Mr. Griggs.

Alzelia Byers Jones
Alzelia Byers Jones, 79, of Charlottesville, departed this life on Friday, June 28, 2002, at Martha Jefferson Hospital.
She was born on March 11, 1923, in Albemarle County, the daughter of the late Oscar Byers Sr. and Olivia Turner Byers.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her hus-band, Deacon Eugene Jones; two sons, Robert Crenshaw Sr. and his wife, Thelma, and Ronald Archie Crenshaw; three sisters, Catherine Byers Hawkins, Lulu Mae Burton, and Gladys Byers; and three brothers, George H. Byers, Henry L. Byers, and Bledsoe Byers.
Alzelia was a faithful member of Rising Sun Baptist Church in North Garden and served as a member of the Missionary Circle.
She is survived by her loving family, one brother, Oscar E. Byers of Washington, D.C.; a brother-in-law, Edward Burton of North Garden; a devoted and loving grand-daughter, Michelle Crenshaw, and her other grandchildren, Vanetta Banks, Inez Crenshaw, Ann Cren-shaw, Brenda Crenshaw, Robert Crenshaw, and Randy Crenshaw; 12 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a special and devoted friend, Josephine Goldie Barbour; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at Rising Sun Baptist Church, North Garden, with the Rev. Maynard Jones offici-ating. Interment
will follow in the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church cemetery on Old Lynchburg Road. Her remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends at Rising Sun Baptist Church after the service.

Ray H. Knight Sr.
Ray Hampton Knight Sr., 49, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, in Charlottesville.
Born June 24, 1953, he was the son of Pearl June Harlow and the late Zeb Hampton Knight.
He is survived by his three sons, Ray H. Knight II and his wife, Betty J. (Jeannie), of Schuyler, Christo-pher B. Knight and his wife, Kaylyn (K.K.), of Charlottesville, and Mi-chael S. Knight of Charlottesville; four sisters, Mary E. Carter (Liz) of Troy, Shirley J. Collins of Georgia, Patricia J. Velez of Hollywood, Fla., and Charlotte J. Douglas of Char-lottesville; one brother Joe M. Knight of Albemarle; five grandchildren, Jarrett Knight, Jessica Knight, Cory Marrs, Kelsey Knight and Tyler Knight; several nieces and neph-ews; and a special friend, Thomas Parmenter.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. this evening at Teague Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be con-ducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday after-noon at the Teague Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Hunter officiating. Inter-ment will follow in the Beaver Dam Baptist Church cemetery.

Richard W. Koscak Sr.
Richard Warner Koscak Sr., 41, of the Lake Monticello Community, Palmyra, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, in Albemarle County.
He was owner of Rick’s Drywall, a business he began when he came to this area from Florida with his family. Ricky was a loving husband and father.
He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Rayann; a son, Richard W. Koscak Jr.; a daughter, Jessica Lynn Koscak, all of Palmyra; his parents, John and Dorothy Koscak of Sebastian, Fla.; a sister, Debbie Koscak of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and his grandmothers, Rachael Patter-son of Sebastian, Fla. and Nina Koscak of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday after-noon at the Colbert Funeral Home Chapel in Bremo Bluff. The Rev. Tom LeVines will officiate. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. There will be a reception following the service at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Price, Route 15, Carysbrook.
An Oceanside memorial service will be conducted Sunday, July 21, in Sebastian, Fla.
Emil Henry Kovarik
Emil H. Kovarik, 74, of Charlottesville died Monday, July 1, 2002, at a local nursing home.
Mr. Kovarik was born May 29, 1928, in Chicago. He was the son of the late Emil H. and Emily Sebesta Kovarik. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Kovarik.
He is survived by his two daughters, Karen Harper and Kim Shumaker and her husband, Brian; his son, David Kovarik and his wife, Brenda, all of Charlottesville; one stepdaughter, Sharon Sanders and her husband, Michael, of Wilmington, N.C.; one stepson, Albert “Ray” Kumer and his wife, Crystal, of Troy; one sister, Joy Olsen; one brother Duane Kovarik; six grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at Teague Funeral Home.
A private service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon in Culpeper National cemetery.

Frances C. Saul, 97, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, in a local nursing home.

Alma T. Smith
Alma T. Smith, 96, of Holiday, Fla., died Friday, June 28, 2002, at Tarpon Health and Rehab. She was born in Wintergreen.
She was predeceased by her husband, C.W. Smith, the former Chief of Police of Chesterfield County; and her son, James E. Morris Jr. of Holiday, Fla.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Frances June Morris of Holiday, Fla.; a granddaughter, Patricia Kochie of Columbus, N.J.; a grandson, James E. Morris III of Sewell, N.J.; five great-granddaughters; and one great-great-grandson.
Interment will be in Monticello Memorial Park at a later date.

Robert Whitten Smith
Robert Whitten Smith, 74, of North Garden, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, in a local hospital.
Born on Feb. 19, 1928, in North Garden, he was the son of the late James Robert and Dorothy Whitten Smith.
Mr. Smith was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired security officer with Farmington Country Club and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Norris Smith of North Garden; one daughter, Karen Smith Strider and her husband, David Strider Jr., of Charlottesville; one son, John Linwood Smith of North Garden; and four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at the Teague Funeral Home.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday morning in the Mooreland Baptist Church cemetery.

Martha vonSchilling Stuart
Martha vonSchilling Stuart, 90, a native of Hampton, widow of Walker D. Stuart Jr., died Sunday, June 30, 2002, in Charlottesville.
She is survived by two sons, Walker Dabney Stuart III of Lexington and Marshall Howard Stuart of Easley, S.C.; a daughter, Martha Wynne Stuart of Charlottesville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A 1932 graduate of Longwood College, Mrs. Stuart lived the majority of her life in Richmond. She attended St. Thomas Episcopal Church and served on the Altar Guild and as president of the Women’s Organization. She also served as a volunteer for the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and the Virginia Home. She was a member of the Ginter Park Book Reviewers Club, The Ginter Park Garden Club, and the Ginter Park Woman’s Club; she held positions on the boards of the latter two of these organizations.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at Rock Chapel of the Church of Our Savior, 1165 East Rio Rd., Charlottesville.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in memory of Mrs. Stuart to the charity of your choice.
Helen Shamblin Watts
Helen Shamblin Watts, 91, of Lewisburg, W.Va., died Monday, July 1, 2002, at Mountain View Nursing Home, Madison County.
Born Feb. 27, 1911, in Gauley Bridge, Fayette County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Roy Lee Shamblin and Flora Rozella Shamblin.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jo Blackburn Watts Jr.; and her two brothers, Robert Shamblin and Roy Everette Shamblin.
She is survived by her nieces, Bobbie Lee Shamblin Casey of Second Creek, W.Va. and Helen Jo Shamblin of Mt. Dora, Fla.; her nephew, Robert Shamblin of Pem-brooke Pines, Fla.; her sister-in-law, Alice Watts Hewitt of Leawood, Kan., and her children, David Payne, Bethany Roderick, and John L. Hewitt; and her brother-in-law, M. Williamson Watts of Rockingham and Madison Counties, and his children, Laura Watts Williamson, Caroline Watts, Jo Blackburn Watts III, John W. Watts, and Evelyn Watts Way.
Graveside services will be held in Lewisburg, W.Va.

Mary Breeden Bailey
Mary Virginia Breeden Bailey, 84, of Orange, died Monday, July 1, 2002, at the Orange County Nursing Home.
Born Oct. 27, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert C. and Ada Frances Breeden. Her husband was the late William E. Bailey. She was a homemaker and a member of Oak Chapel Baptist Church.
Mrs. Bailey is survived by one daughter, Mary Frances Highlander of Orange; one son, Stephen W. Tusing of Orange; four grandchildren, Stephen W. Tusing II, Michael B. Tusing, Kimberly A. Modena, and Craig S. Highlander; and three great-grandchildren, Robert Modena II, Stephanie Modena, and Benjamin Highlander.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Orange. A private graveside service, conducted by the Rev. George Sipek, will be held at a later date.
