John Lee Blair

John Lee Blair, 85, of Troy, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Martha Jefferson Hospital.

Born Aug. 9, 1916, in Thomasville, N.C., he was the son of the late John W. and Cynthia Harris Blair. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gemma G. Blair.

He was retired, after 30 years of service, from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer during World War II. John was stationed at Pearl Harbor under Admiral Bull Halsey on the U.S.S. California during the Pearl Harbor Attack. He was the owner and operator of Blair's Poultry Farm in Troy and a member of St.'s Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Palmyra.

Survivors include his children, Buck Blair and his wife, Donna, Cynthia B. Aycock and her husband, Bob, and Ave Maria B. Griffin and her husband, Phil, all of Troy; five grandchildren, Kimberly Mayes and her husband, Doug, of California, Cameron Blair of Kansas, Blair Aycock of Troy, and Gemma and Angela Griffin, both of Troy; four great-grandchildren, Courtney, Emily, Tanner, and Trenton; and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 1 p.m. Friday afternoon at St's Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Palmyra. Interment icon will be private.

Those who wish may send con-tributions in memory of John Lee Blair to the charity of their choice.

Teresa J. Braxton

Mrs. Teresa Johnson Braxton, 90, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Trinity Mission Nursing Home in Charlottesville.

She was born Jan. 16, 1912, in Rectortown. She was a retired nurse.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elder James G. Braxton.

She is survived by her nephew, Darryl Walker of Atlanta; her two nieces, Corliss Sample of Spring Lake, N.C. and Jacqueline Smith of Largo, Md.; her cousin, Celeste Thomas of Marshal; her godson, James Graves III of San Diego; her devoted friends and caregivers, Joan and James Graves and Phoebe Beasley; and a host of friends.

A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday morning at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Rhoadesville. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. that morning at the church, with Pastor Kevin McDowney officiating. Interment icon will be in Westview cemetery in Orange.

William P. Clarke

William Preston "Beans" Clarke, 78, of Orange, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at his residence.

Born March 15, 1924, in Somerset, he was the son of the late Grover Wood Clarke and Mary Elease Saunders Clarke.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Rosalie Wiegard and Gertrude Dulaney; and one brother, Grover W. Clarke.

Mr. Clarke was an accountant for Faulconer Construction Co. of Charlottesville; an Army Veteran of World War II; a member of Orange Lions Club; a member of Orange Jaycee's; a member of the team of '40 at Orange High School; and a member of Orange Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Emma Cash Clarke of Orange; his daughter, Jennifer Clarke Skipper and her husband, Walter, of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; his three sons, Ted Clarke and his wife, Cyndi, of Lurel, Md., William Tanner and his wife, Maureen, of Manassas, and Matthew Clarke and his wife, Kelly, of Boulder, Colo.; his brother, Lindsay Clarke of Orange; his four grandchildren, Virginia Kennon of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., Tony Lee Kennon Jr. of Or-ange, Lindsey Tanner and Carly Tanner, both of Manassas; and his great-grandchild.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday morning in the Graham cemetery in Orange, conducted by Dr. Stanley Johnson. The family will receive friends at their residence, 11345 Fairmont St., at anytime and after the service at the reception in the Pine Room of Orange Baptist Church.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Pied-mont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Suite 200, Charlottesville, Va. 22911.

John K. Haviland

Dr. John Kenneth Haviland, born Jan. 19, 1921, in Mt. Kisco, N.Y.; attended Nottingham University, U.K. and a graduate of the Univer-sity of London and MIT; retired Professor Emeritus of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Virginia. He was the last remaining American survivor who flew in the Battle of Britain and received the Distinguished Flying Cross for service in the British Royal Air Force during World War II, where he flew Mosquitos in the 151st and 192nd Squadrons.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Valerie Haviland; five children and their spouses, Susan Elizabeth Haviland and John Seely Brown of Palo Alto, Calif., David Pairman Haviland and Mary Gunter Haviland of Abingdon, Peter Aldridge Haviland of Tampa, Fla., Laurence Beckton Haviland and Elizabeth Mabry Haviland of Roanoke, and Julia Haviland Avent and Thomas Edward Avent of Arlington; and seven grandchildren, Simon Windsor Haviland, Hannah Louise Havi-land, Jordan Natalie Haviland, Jonathon Chase Haviland, Elizabeth Aynsley Haviland, Jonathan Baker Haviland, and Emma Grace Avent.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dr. John Kenneth Haviland Scholarship in Engineering and Applied Science at the Univer-sity of Virginia, c/o The Virginia Engineering Foundation, A-123 Thornton Hall, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Va. 22903.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday morning at St. Paul's Ivy with the Rev. Miller Hunter offici-ating. Interment icon will be private.

A funeral service for Ray Hampton Knight Sr. will be conducted at 2 p.m. this afternoon at the Teague Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Hunter officiating. Interment icon will follow in the Beaver Dam Baptist Church cemetery.

John G. McCrory II

John Graham McCrory II, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at a local nursing home.

Frances C. Saul

Frances Charlton Saul, 97, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, in a local nursing home.

Born April 10, 1905, n Cambridge, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Captain Charles M. Charlton, Chaplain, USN (Retired) and Lucia Lincoln Chamberlain Charlton. She was the wife of the late E. Burbank Saul.

Fran was a member of the Church of Our Saviour, Charlottesville, and was a former treasurer of the Episcopal Church Women. She retired in 1970, as Business Manager of the Lincoln-Sudbury School District in Massachusetts and was a former president of the Belmont, Massachusetts Council, Girl Scouts of America.

In addition to her parents and husband, Fran was preceded in death by her brother, Newell Charl-ton; and sister, Lucia Olsson.

She is survived by her daughter, Lucia Gilliom and her husband, John, of Charlottesville; seven grandchildren, Margie Boliver of Cincinnati, Helen "Lynn" Lear of Millersville, Md., Michael Gilliom of Charlottesville, Jonathan Gilliom of Charlottesville, Christopher Gilliom of LaPorte, Ind., Tracy Cardwell of Allen, Texas, and Randy Gilliom of Belleville, Miss.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Charlton of Collingswood, N.J.; five nieces and nephews; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be con-ducted at 11 a.m. Friday morning at the Church of Our Saviour with the Rev. Harold H. Hallock Jr. officiating. The family will greet friends after the service. Interment icon will be private.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Church of Our Saviour, 1165 East Rio Rd., Charlottesville, Va. 22901.

Robert Whitten Smith

Robert Whitten Smith, 74, of North Garden died Sunday, June 30, 2002 in a local hospital.

Born Feb. 19, 1928, in North Garden, he was the son of the late James Robert and Dorothy Whitten Smith.

Mr. Smith was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired security officer with Farmington Country Club and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Norris Smith of North Garden; one daughter, Karen Smith Strider and her husband, David Strider Jr., of Charlottesville; one son, John Linwood Smith of North Garden; and four grandchildren.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. this morn-ing in Mooreland Baptist Church cemetery.

Martha vonSchilling Stuart

Martha vonSchilling Stuart, 90, a native of Hampton, widow of Walker D. Stuart Jr., died Sunday, June 30, 2002, in Charlottesville.

She is survived by two sons, Walker Dabney Stuart III of Lexington and Marshall Howard Stuart of Easley, S.C.; a daughter, Martha Wynne Stuart of Charlottesville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A 1932 graduate of Longwood College, Mrs. Stuart lived the majority of her life in Richmond. She attended St. Thomas Episcopal Church and served on the Altar Guild and as president of the Women's Organization. She also served as a volunteer for the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and the Virginia Home. She was a member of the Ginter Park Book Reviewers Club, The Ginter Park Garden Club, and the Ginter Park Woman's Club; she held positions on the boards of the latter two of these organizations.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. this afternoon at Rock Chapel of the Church of Our Savior, 1165 East Rio Rd., Charlottesville.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in memory of Mrs. Stuart to the charity of your choice.

Sallie C. Baber

Sallie Campbell Baber, of near Scottsville in Buckingham County, age 83, passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at Heritage Hall, Dillwyn.

She was the wife of the late Elwood Thomas Baber.

Born Nov. 8, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Curtis T. and Rosa Mays Campbell of Amherst.

Survivors include one sister, Arlene Campbell Hargis of Four Oaks, N.C.; six nieces, Lynda Baber Anderson, Ginger Baber Johnson, Debbie Hargis, Bonnie Stewart, Donna Moore, and Becky Lanahan; eight nephews, Charles T. Baber, Wayne T. Baber, Walter C. Hargis, and Clayton, Ronnie, William, Caroll, and Phillip Campbell; and many great-nieces and great-nephews, friends, cousins, and other relatives.

Preceding her in death were two sisters, Clara Campbell Baber and Hester Campbell.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday morning at Goshen Baptist Church, Buckingham County, with interment to follow in the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Goshen Baptist Church.

There are no viewing hours scheduled for today.
