Norman L. Proffitt Sr.
Norman Lee Proffitt Sr., 57, of Troy, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at his home.
Born April 16, 1945, in Fluvanna County, he was the son of Eula Virginia Knight of Troy and the late Herman Lee Proffitt.
Mr. Proffitt was a retired electrician. He was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church, the Rivanna Rifle and Pistol Club, the NRA, and the Moose Lodge of Charlottesville.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Margaret Proffitt; a daughter, Norma Jean Paynter of Louisa; a son, Norman Lee Proffitt Jr. of Troy; two sisters, Anna Walker of Troy and Shirley Walker and her husband, Lewis, of Gordonsville; one brother, Eugene H. Proffitt Sr. and his wife, Elizabeth, of Troy; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at Teague Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday morning at Beaver Dam Baptist Church with the Rev. Bruce Hunter officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
Helen English Root
Helen Elizabeth English Root, 99, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, in Avante of Waynesboro, Waynesboro.
She was born March 23, 1903, in Sandusky, Mich., a daughter of the late George E. English and Ethel E. Hathaway English.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Root; a brother, David V. "Tom" English; and a sister, Irene Collins.
Survivors include her sons, Dr. William John Root and his wife, Nancy, of Waynesboro, and James B. Root of Charlottesville; two granddaughters, Lynne Root of Lexington, Ky. and Laura Newman and her husband, William, of Reston; four great-grandchildren, Katie Newman, Molly Newman, Peter Newman and Jack Newman; two nephews, Jerry English of Waxahachie, Texas, and John English of Muskegon, Mich.; and a niece, Phyllis Johannson and her husband, Harry, of Grand Rapids, Mich.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 21, at the Church of Our Savior, Rio Road, Charlottesville, by the Rev. Father Harold Hallock. Interment
will be held at an earlier date in Maple Grove cemetery, Mason, Mich.
The family will receive friends at Church of Our Savior in Charlottesville following the memorial service.

Thomas Earl Wharton
Thomas Earl Wharton, 67, of Unionville, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at Culpeper Health Care Center, after a long extended illness.
Born May 27, 1935, in Unionville, he was the son of the late John William Wharton and Mary Oliva Palmer Wharton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Sarah Elizabeth Culler; and four brothers, Robert Irving Wharton, Ernest Samuel Wharton, Bernard Elmo Wharton, and John William Wharton.
Mr. Wharton was an avid gardener and took pride in raising his vegetables and sharing them with his family and friends.
He is survived by two brothers, James Edward Wharton and his wife, Lura, of Unionville, and Rawley S. Wharton and his wife, Roberta, of Caselberry, Fla.; three sisters, Mary Lillian Palmer Wharton and her husband, Jeffery, of Elliston, Frances W. Smith of Orange, and Helen Louise Foltz and her husband, Paul, of Unionville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the Preddy Funeral Chapel in Orange with interment in Unionville Christian Church cemetery. The Rev. David Boston will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home and after the service on Saturday at the home of Jim and Lura Wharton, 11188 Marquis Rd., Unionville.

Louis Steven Zuzga
Louis Steven Zuzga of Stanardsville, died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at Evergreene Nursing Care Center.
He was born Aug. 25, 1917, a son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Walter Zuzga. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Stanley and Ted Zuzga.
He was retired from the Dunham-Bush Co. in Harrisonburg. He was member of Mt. Nebo Luthern Church in Madison County.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Crystal Shifflett Zuzga, a son, Lou Zuzga Moran Jr. and his wife, Patty, of Tennessee; two grandchildren, Lou Zuzga Moran III and his wife, Mimi, and Stacey Crawford and her husband, Jay, of Texas; four great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday evening at the Ryan Funeral Chapel in Quinque.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday afternoon at Evergreen Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. David Brunk and the Rev. C.C. Kurtz officiating.

Robert K. Brown
Robert Kenneth Brown, 73, of Bremo Bluff, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002.
He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and a retired employee of the Virginia Power Operations Department with 33 years of service.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Minter Brown; a son, Robert K. Brown Jr. and his wife, Kimberly; a sister, Irma B. Melton; a brother, William Curtis Brown Jr.; and two grandchildren, Rachel and Nicholas.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Grace Episcopal Church, Bremo Bluff, conducted by the Rev. Peter Way.

Doris Crawford Easton, 89, died Thursday, August 1, 2002, at Louisa Healthcare Center.

Ida Clarke Garth
Ida Clarke Garth, 91, a lifelong resident of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at her home, the Martha Jefferson House.
Born Oct. 24, 1910, in Decca, she was the daughter of the late Linwood Watts Clarke and Lucy Harris Clarke.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David A. Garth; a brother, William Clarke Sr.; and a sister, Margaret Clarke Wade.
She was a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Nursing in 1931, and was a member of Olivet Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and her extended family.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday morning at Olivet Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Albert Connette officiating. Interment
will be private in the Olivet Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Eugene Bailey Hasher
Eugene Bailey Hasher, 55, of Palmyra, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002.
He was born April 21, 1947, the son of Adell Jones Hasher and the late Otis Pryor Hasher.
He was a member of Bybee Road Baptist Church, a lifetime member of Fluvanna County Volunteer Fire Department, and a member of Fluvanna County Volunteer Rescue Squad. He was retired from Central Virginia Electric Co-op.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Rebecca "Becky" Melton Hasher of Palmyra; his son, Jeremiah "Jeremy" David and his wife, Jennifer; his daughter, Amy Elizabeth and her fiance, Robert Hall, all of Palmyra; a sister, Brenda H. Boatwright and her husband, Danny, of Richmond; and a brother, Otis P. Hasher Jr. and his wife, Amy, of Palmyra.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. this evening at Sheridan Funeral Home, Kents Store.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday morning at Bybee Road Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Richard Clore and the Rev. Lowell Vaught. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.

Jack Delano Mahan
Dr. Jack Delano Mahan, 65, of Keswick, formerly of Norfolk, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at his residence.
He was born on Sept. 10, 1936, in Harlan County, Ky. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Lois Morris Mahan and Luther G. Mahan of Big Stone Gap; and a brother, Robert Morris Mahan.
He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Lincoln Memorial University in 1957. He received his M.D. from the University of Virginia in 1961. After a year's internship and three years of residency at Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, he served two years with the 249th General Hospital in Japan during the Vietnam War.
Upon returning to the States in 1963, he was employed as a radiologist by Obici Hospital in Suffolk for three years.
He returned to Norfolk General, where he had previously trained, as a partner. Three years later he became President of Medical Center Radiologists and served in that capacity for 17 years until he retired in 1992.
During his years as President of Medical Center Radiologists, he served as secretary from 1983 to 1984 and treasurer from 1984 to 1985 of the Norfolk Academy of Medicine and went on to become president of the Academy from 1985 to 1987.
He was a member of The American College of Radiology, The American Medical Association, and The Radiological Society of North America. He was also an Assistant Professor of Radiology at Eastern Virginia Medical School in the early 1980s. He served on the Norfolk Advisory Board of Crestar Bank from 1991 to 1993.
Throughout his career, he received numerous achievement awards.
Doctor Mahan was a charter member of the Suffolk Sports Club and a long standing member of the Virginia Student Aid Foundation at the University of Virginia. He was a member of the Elks Club in Suffolk, Norfolk, and Charlottesville and also the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and the Glenmore Country Club in Keswick. He was an avid sports fan and supporter of the University of Virginia men's basketball and football teams.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Ann O'Rourke Mahan of Keswick; three sons, Jeffrey Stewart Mahan and his wife, Donna, and their two sons, Jeffrey and Shane, all of Crozet, Gregory Lewis Mahan of Norfolk, and Brian Douglas Mahan of Los Angeles; and a sister, Connie M. Pierce of Big Stone Gap.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday morning at Teague Funeral Home in Charlottesville. Preceding the ceremony, the family will be receiving family and friends beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

A memorial service for Marilyn M. Meyn will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the Teague Chapel with Chaplain Suzanne Smith officiating.

Glen Dale Phillips, 47, of Louisa, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 2, 1954, in Alexandria a son of the late Ronald Herbert Phillips and Rosa Lee Franklin Phillips.
Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Anita J. Phillips of Louisa, three sons; Christopher M. Hutchinson of Fairfax, Jimmy Kenneth Shaver of Virginia Beach and Joshua D. Phillips of Louisa; three brothers, Roland Phillips of Falls Church, Ralph P. Phillips of Woodbridge, and George M. Phillips of Brandon, Fla.; and a sister, Juanita Bleigh of Weston, W.Va.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Gordonsville, officiated by The Rev. Donald Reid.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon prior to the funeral service.
