Nathan J. Wood
Nathan J. Wood, 72, of Albemarle County, died Thursday, August 1, 2002, in a local hospital.
Born Aug. 12, 1929, in Albemarle County, he was the son of the late Noel J. Wood and Anna Lively Wood.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester R. Wood and Franklin J. Wood.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara A. Wood of Charlottesville; three sons, Jeff Wood and his wife, Joan, of Charlottesville, Dennis Wood of Charlottesville, and Mark Wood of Houston; one daughter, Donna Harding and her husband, Jimmy, of Esmont; two grandchildren, Logan and Quintin Wood of Manassas; a sister, Ruth Parks of Charleston, S.C.; and two brothers, Curtis and Rueben Wood, both of Charlottesville.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at Hill & Wood Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon in Holly Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jason Rutherford officiating.

Ida Clarke Garth, 91, of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at her home, the Martha Jefferson House.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday morning at Olivet Presbyterian Church.

Julia Moss Holloway
Julia Moss Holloway, 82, of Charlottesville, departed this life on Friday, July 26, 2002, at her residence.
She was born Dec. 1, 1919, in Louisa County, the daughter of the late Henry Spurgeon Moss Sr. and Mable Boykin Moss. She was the widow of Joseph Simeon Holloway Jr.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by four siblings, Hazel Moss Duncan, Henry Spurgeon Moss Jr., George Moss, and Vincent A. Moss.
Julia accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Laurel Hill Baptist Church in Mineral where her Christian foundation began. She later joined First Baptist Church, Charlottesville, where she was instrumental in establishing and sponsoring numerous youth activities such as the Junior Missionary Society and Youth Choir. She was also an active member of the Melodic Choir and the Susan Lawson Farrar Missionary Society.
Her community activities include the Les Ames Social Club, Charlottesville Retired Teachers Association, Virginia Education Association, Charlottesville Players Guild, Charlottesville Chapter of NAACP, and the Dunbar High School Alumni Association.
Mrs. Holloway received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Minor Teachers College in Washington, D.C. She obtained two master's degrees, one from New York University and the other from the University of Virginia in Guidance and Elementary Education.
She was a retired educator whose distinguished teaching career began in Albemarle County and the surrounding counties. She retired from Charlottesville City schools after 39 years of service to the profession. Her love of the profession led her to continue on as a substitute teacher until June of 2002.
Mrs. Holloway was blessed with one child, Simona J. Holloway-Warren and her husband, Lewis O. Warren Jr., of Charlottesville; two grandsons, Jamez Simeyon Lynch of Chantilly and Wynter Emerson Warren of Charlottesville; a future daughter-in-law, Jennell Cofer and great-grandson, Jamez Simeyon Lynch Jr. of Chantilly; one loving brother, Reginald R. Moss Sr. of Charlottesville; two brothers-in-law, Quentin Holloway of Durham, N.C. and Edward Arrington of Greensboro, N.C.; seven sisters-in-law, Anna Holloway Morris of Durham, N.C., Roxie Holloway Moore of Charlottesville, Lily Holloway and Gwendolyn Holloway, both of Philadelphia, Josephine Holloway Brown and her husband, Raymond Brown, Lillian Holloway, all of Greensboro, N.C., and Doris Holloway of Raleigh, N.C., a host of well-loved nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at First Baptist Church, 632 West Main St.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday morning at First Baptist Church, 632 West Main St., with the Rev. Dr. Bruce A. Beard officiating. Interment
will follow in Oakwood cemetery.
The family expresses heartfelt thanks to the staff of Martha Jefferson Hospital, the Hospice of the Piedmont, and Dr. Danielle Simon for the excellent care given to Julia during her brief illness.

James R. Hughes Sr.
James Russell Hughes Sr., 72, of Keswick, departed this life on Monday, July 29, 2002, in Martha Jefferson Hospital.
He was born April 1, 1930, in Keswick, the son of the late William Hughes and Manna Hawkins Hughes. He was the husband of Pauline P. Hughes.
Mr. Hughes received his formal education in the Albemarle County school system. He joined Union Run Baptist Church at an early age and remained a lifelong member. Family and friends knew him as a friendly and kindhearted person who especially loved children. He was a retired Chef with over 25 years service at Martha Jefferson House.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife, Pauline P. Hughes of Keswick; five sons, James Hughes Jr. and his wife, Madelean, of Cobham, Clarence Hughes of Charlottesville, Franklin Hughes and his wife, Veronica, of Keswick, William Hughes and his wife, Ida, and Harry Hughes and his wife, Pamela, all of Charlottesville; eight daughters, Shirley Jordan and her husband, David, Jean Fields and her husband, Lorenza, and Patricia Hughes, all of Keswick, Sarah Young and her husband, James, of Troy, Betty Hawkins and her husband, Alfred, of Cobham, Rosetta Hughes and Annette Hughes, both of Keswick, and Harriet Hughes of Charlottesville, among them are two sets of twins; one sister, Eleanor Robinson of Keswick; one sister-in-law, Minnie Scott; 28 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; two special individuals that stuck by his side, Mrs. Elsie Mills and Mr. George Crawford, both of Keswick; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Union Run Baptist Church, Shadwell, with the Rev. Rickey White officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.

Christopher S. Leake, 44, of Locust Dale, died Monday, July 29, 2002, in Culpeper.
He was born Aug. 5, 1957, in Harrisonburg.
Mr. Leake was a self-employed carpenter/artist.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Ann Sanders Leake; two sons, three-year-old, Timothy Joshua Leake and four-month-old, Noah James Leake, all of Locust Dale; his mother, Kathryn Sipe of Locust Dale; his father, Donald Mitchell Leake of Deltona, Fla.; a sister, Suzanne Elaine Leake of Deltona, Fla.; and a brother, David M. Leake of Haymarket.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Madison.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday morning in Middle River Church of the Brethren cemetery, New Hope. The Rev. Hudson Nuckols will officiate.

Marilyn M. Meyn, 69, of Keswick, passed from this life Tuesday, July 30, 2002.
She was born March 22, 1933, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late Kenneth G. and Mabel Murphy.
She is survived by her husband, Herman C. Meyn of Keswick; her sister, Carol Deren of Long Island, N.Y.; her brother, Kenneth G. Murphy Jr. of Gaithersburg, Md.; two sons, Gary J. Meyn and his wife, Judy, of San Antonio, Texas and Bruce K. Meyn and his wife, Dawn, of Mechanicsville; one daughter, Donna M. Ballard and her husband, Brady, of Keswick; four grandchildren, Taylor and Brett Meyn of Mechanicsville and Jordan and John Ballard of Keswick; and all of her nieces and nephews that she cherished dearly.
In surviving cancer for the past 26 years she has touched the lives of so many by her inspiration, faith, support and an incredible will to live life to the fullest. The family would like to especially praise Dr. Gordon L. Morris who has been such a part of our mother's "Guiding Light." She will always love you dearly. Also, to the Martha Jefferson staff and to the Cardwell Center staff, our heartfelt thanks go out to you for all your care, support and kindness. Please know that you will always be in her heart.
A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the Teague Chapel with Chaplain Suzanne Smith officiating.

Ruby Davis Taylor, 84, of Scottsville, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Christopher "Chris" Thomas Taylor; her parents, Joseph and Flossie Davis; a son, Christopher Thomas Taylor Jr.; two sisters, Pearl Branham and Mabel Gibson; and two brothers, Willie and Joe Davis.
Survivors include two sons, Vernon Taylor and his wife, Virginia, of Scottsville and Douglas Taylor and his wife, May, of Charlottesville; one brother, Robert Davis of West Virginia; four grandchildren, Sue Breeden and her husband, Jimmy, of Scottsville, Kay and Chris Taylor, and Marcie Llera and her husband, Jeff, all of Charlottesville; and three great-grandchildren, Mitch Breeden, and Austin and Elizabeth Llera.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Woodland United Methodist Church cemetery, Buckingham, with the Rev. Luther Ramsey officiating.

Constance Velle "Lena" Anthos, 88, formerly of Charlottesville, died Monday, July 29, 2002, in Colonial Heights.
She was born Sept. 6, 1913, in Charlottesville, and was a resident until 1999.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gus Anthos; her parents, Nicholas and Evanthia Velle; two sisters, Patricia Konduros and Agnes Tyson; and a brother, Louis Velle.
Surviving are a daughter, Margo Sapon and her husband, John, of Colonial Heights; two grandsons, William Sapon of Chester and Dean Sapon of Colonial Heights; and several nieces and nephews.
