Julia Moss Holloway
Julia Moss Holloway, 82, of Charlottesville, departed this life on Friday, July 26, 2002, at her residence.
She was born Dec. 1, 1919, in Louisa County, the daughter of the late Henry Spurgeon Moss Sr. and Mable Boykin Moss. She was the widow of Joseph Simeon Holloway Jr.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by four siblings, Hazel Moss Duncan, Henry Spurgeon Moss Jr., George Moss, and Vincent A. Moss.
Julia accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Laurel Hill Baptist Church in Mineral where her Christian foundation began. She later joined First Baptist Church, Charlottesville, where she was instrumental in establishing and sponsoring numerous youth activities such as the Junior Missionary Society and Youth Choir. She was also an active member of the Melodic Choir and the Susan Lawson Farrar Missionary Society.
Her community activities include the Les Ames Social Club, Charlottesville Retired Teachers Association, Virginia Education Association, Charlottesville Players Guild, Charlottesville Chapter of NAACP, and the Dunbar High School Alumni Association.
Mrs. Holloway received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Minor Teachers College in Washington, D.C. She obtained two master's degrees, one from New York University and the other from the University of Virginia in Guidance and Elementary Education.
She was a retired educator whose distinguished teaching career began in Albemarle County and the surrounding counties. She retired from Charlottesville City schools after 39 years of service to the profession. Her love of the profession led her to continue on as a substitute teacher until June of 2002.
Mrs. Holloway was blessed with one child, Simona J. Holloway-Warren and her husband, Lewis O. Warren Jr., of Charlottesville; two grandsons, Jamez Simeyon Lynch of Chantilly and Wynter Emerson Warren of Charlottesville; a future daughter-in-law, Jennell Cofer and great-grandson, Jamez Simeyon Lynch Jr. of Chantilly; one loving brother, Reginald R. Moss Sr. of Charlottesville; two brothers-in-law, Quentin Holloway of Durham, N.C. and Edward Arrington of Greensboro, N.C.; seven sisters-in-law, Anna Holloway Morris of Durham, N.C., Roxie Holloway Moore of Charlottesville, Lily Holloway and Gwendolyn Holloway, both of Philadelphia, Josephine Holloway Brown and her husband, Raymond Brown, Lillian Holloway, all of Greensboro, N.C., and Doris Holloway of Raleigh, N.C., a host of well-loved nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at First Baptist Church, 632 West Main St.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday morning at First Baptist Church, 632 West Main St., with the Rev. Dr. Bruce A. Beard officiating. Interment
will follow in Oakwood cemetery.
The family expresses heartfelt thanks to the staff of Martha Jefferson Hospital, the Hospice of the Piedmont, and Dr. Danielle Simon for the excellent care given to Julia during her brief illness.

Estelle E. Redmond
Estelle Elizabeth Redmond, 93, of Keswick, departed this life on Saturday, July 27, 2002, at Martha Jefferson Hospital.
She was born on July 16, 1909, in Albemarle County, the daughter of the late Edmond Ferguson and Cora Barrett Ferguson. She was the widow of Allen Redmond.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Elson Redmond.
Her formal education was in the Albemarle County school system. She was a homemaker who loved to have family and guests feel welcome. All appreciated her warm, caring, and quiet nature. She was known as the family historian, possessing a wealth of knowledge.
Her survivors include one niece, Sylvia Ferguson Martin of Rutherford, N.J.; one nephew, Linwood Jones of Charlottesville; one sister, Viola Ferguson Redmond of Keswick; a number of great and great-great-nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday evening at Union Run Baptist Church, Shadwell.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday morning at Union Run Baptist Church with the Rev. Rickey White officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.

Thomas F. Stover
Thomas Fayssoux Stover, 55, of Midlothian, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John O. and Elizabeth Fayssoux Stover.
He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Shirley J. Stover; his children, Diane, Thomas Jr., and Lawson Stover, and Drew Smith; three brothers, John Jr., Richard, and David Stover.
He was a graduate of Atlantic Christian College and employed by Verizon. Tom will be remembered for his enthusiasm for life, his robust sense of humor, and an abiding love for his family.
He was a member of Winfree Memorial Baptist Church in Midlothian, where he sang bass in the choir. He was a loyal University of Virginia sports fan and ushered at ballgames for many years.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. this evening and Thursday evening at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd. in Midlothian.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon at Winfree Memorial Baptist Church with interment in Dale Memorial Park.

Joel David Artman
Joel David Artman, 62, formerly of Charlottesville, died at his home in Chester on Saturday, July 27, 2002, following a brief struggle with cancer.
He was born and raised in Norris, Tenn. He attended the University of Tennessee, graduated from N.C. State University, and received his master's degree in Forest Pathology from Duke University.
He served the Commonwealth of Virginia's Department of Forestry for 33 years as a forest pathologist, and after retiring, began work with UAP Timberland.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Bailey Artman; and his brother, Jerry Artman.
He is survived by his wife, Janice H. Artman of Chester; his father James O. Artman of Apex, N.C.; his son, Dr. Michael Artman and his wife, Catherine, of Apex, NC; his daughter, Janet Artman LaPrade and her husband, Michael, of Charlottesville; his three grandsons, Patrick, Matthew, and Christopher Artman; his one granddaughter, Bailey LaPrade; his brother, Jim Artman of Euless, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday morning at Chester Presbyterian Church.

R. Hamilton Haney, 86, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, in a local nursing home.
Born February 12, 1916, he was the son of the late Phillip H. and Sharon Marshall Haney.
Mr. Haney was a World War II Veteran with the Army Air Corp and a retired self-employed painter.
He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday morning in Riverview cemetery with the Rev. Sidney Craig officiating.

William Lynn Harvey
William Lynn Harvey, 84, of Arrington, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, in Winterhaven Nursing Home in Charlottesville.
Born June 29, 1918, in Davis Creek, Nelson County, he was the son of the late William Tunstall Harvey and Dorothy Seay Harvey.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lewis Carlton Harvey; and a sister, Margaret Hill.
He was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church and a World War II Navy Veteran, having served on the Battleship Texas as a Signalman. He was a member of VFW Post No. 7701 of Colleen and was the owner of Harvey Oil Company of Arrington for over 25 years until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Proffitt Harvey; a daughter, Vickie H. Adkins and her husband, Charles, of Earlysville; a grandson, Paul Adkins of Ashville, N.C.; a granddaughter, Kimberly Adkins of Woodbridge; a great-grandson, Jake Adkins of Ashville, N.C.; three brothers, Douglas Harvey, Richard Harvey, and Clyde Harvey, all of Lovingston; two sisters, Dorothy Jackson of Powhatan and Annie Kauffman of Lynchburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Freeman Gordon Lee
Freeman Gordon Lee, 72, of Taylor Creek Road, Afton, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, in Lovingston.
Born Dec. 31, 1929, in Washington D.C., he was the son of the late Freeman Gaylord Lee and Odeissa Warlord Lee.
Gordon received a multi-disciplinary bachelor's degree from Capital University, Columbus, Ohio, a master's degree in Management and Supervision from Central Michigan University, and finished his post-graduate work in Public Administration and Policy at VIP at Blacksburg.
He was an engineer, registered in Virginia and California, a certified professional Logistician by the Society of Logistics Engineers, and had an Advanced Professional Designation in Logistics Management from the Air Force Institute of Technology.
He served in both World War II and the Korean Conflict in several battles with numerous decorations to his credit.
He is listed in the following publications: "American Men of Science, " "Who's Who in Space, " "Directory of International Biography, " "Royal Blue Book, " "The Two Thousand Men of Achievement, " and "Who's Who in the South and Southwest."
He was an internationally respected Scientist, Engineer, and Scholar. He was a fellow of The British Interplanetary Society, the sectional V.P. of the American Rocket Society, senior member of the American Astronomical Society, a fellow of the Society of American Military Engineers, a member of the National Board of Directors, President of the Fort Belviar Post, a Senior member of the Society of Logistics Engineer, and an officer and instructor in Logistics Engineering.
Gordon had won the "GOLD" First Hearst Trophy Metal for national Rifle Championship from the University of Maryland, was an accomplished skier, having competed in the U.S., Canada, Italy, and Switzerland. He was a champion boxer, holding the Golden Gloves for the Mediterranean Theater (U.S. Army). Chess was one of his favorite games. He was a member of the Scouts for more than 30 years, studied Aikdo under Major Morton Sherzer at Redstone Arsenal, AL. and Tae Kwon Do at Rockfish Valley.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Potter Lee; three daughters, Lucille Jean Lee of Afton, Melodie Susan Potter of Lorton, and Celeste Ann Selby of Grieshiem, Germany; a son, Montgomery Delta Lee of Afton; a grandson, Philip Gordon Lee; and two step-grandchildren, Cassandra Eve Nelson and Robert Mark Nelson.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday morning at the family residence at 6229 Taylor Creek Rd., Afton, with interment in the family cemetery.
Friends may call at the residence at any time on Thursday.
