John Marion Crymes

John Marion Crymes, 82, died Thursday, July 25, 2002.

He was born in Jackson, Miss., and attended Mississippi State where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

During World War II he served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corp, met and married Ann Gaulding Crymes, and made Richmond his home.

John was a mechanical sales engineer and established John Crymes Associates, which handled heating, air-conditioning, and ventilating equipment. He was a member of Alders Gate United Methodist Church and was active in the Rotary Club, the West End Businessmen's Club, and the Downtown Businessmen's Club.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Gaulding Crymes.

He is survived by his son, John M. "Jack" Crymes Jr. of Fairfax, Calif.; his daughter, Ann Crymes Galione, and son-in-law, Robert Galione, of Charlottesville; and his two grandsons, Kris Galione and Rick Galione.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. this evening at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., Richmond.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday morning in Hollywood cemetery in Richmond.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Association or Hospice of the Piedmont in Johnny's memory.

Lacy M. Frazier

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. this afternoon at Belmont Baptist Church with Chaplain Suzanne Hilton-Smith and the Rev. Kathleen Sturges officiating. Interment icon will follow in Monticello Memory Gardens.

Hill & Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Odessa C. Mowbray

Odessa C. Mowbray, 75, passed away Friday, July 26, 2002, at a Charlottesville hospital. She was born Dec. 2, 1926, in Greene County, a daughter of the late Martin and Givie Collier.

Her husband was the late Frank W. Mowbray.

She is survived by four daughters, Sandra Polawski and her husband, Jeff, of Wexford, Pa., Peggy Mowbray and Shawn Mooney, Sue Sherrill, and Gayle Pardue and her husband, David, all of Charlottesville; seven grandchildren, Kari Collier of Las Vegas, Jessica Knight of Raleigh, N.C., Whitney Polawski of Wexford, Pa., Clayman and Kelsie Mooney, and Isabelle Pardue, all of Charlottesville, Joshua Rhodes of Broadway; and two step-grandchildren, Chessie and Damien Pardue of Charlottesville.

Mrs. Mowbray spent her youth on a farm, where she acquired her lifelong love of animals and all the wonders of nature. She loved children and attended to a number of children, who remember her fondly. She loved music, many remember her musical talents when she was a young woman. She was a spirited and independent woman.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening and Monday evening at the Ryan Funeral Home in Quinque.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

Morris Smith

Morris Smith, 66, of Barboursville died Friday, July 26, 2002, at his residence. He was born April 13, 1936, in Orange County, a son of the late Herman W. Smith and Noami Cary Smith.

Mr. Smith worked at the Daily Progress, in Charlottesville, before his retirement and was a member of the Blue Run Baptist Church in Barboursville, where he was very active serving on the usher board, trustee, sexton, men's club and the Blue Run Men's Ensemble and was active in the Barboursville Community Association. He also served his country in the U. S. Army.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Smith of Barboursville; three daughters, Odessa Smith and Miranda Smith, both of Barboursville, and Ozella Smith of Charlottesville; three sons, Ira Smith of Madison, and O'Donahue Smith and Mark Smith, both of Barboursville; one brother, Herman O. Smith of Falls Church; three sisters, Velta Pelham of Arlington, Cynthia Davis of Barboursville, and Bertha Rucker of Highland, Calif.; ten grandchildren, Quinton, Juwuhn, Jerrod, Jasmine, Ira Jr., Alexis, Isiah, Markiana, Tre'von, and Jessica; honorary son, Perry Quarles of Orange; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Blue Run Baptist Church, Barboursville, with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Peggy Brice will officiate.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from noon to 1 p.m. Monday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Suite 200, Charlottesville, Va. 22911.

The family would like to thank Hospice for all of loving care and support given to the family in their time of need.

Thomas N. Sparks

Thomas Newton Sparks, 80, of Orange, died Friday, July 26, 2002. He was born Oct. 16, 1921, in Orange, son of the late Robert Walker Sparks III and Adelaid Bullock Sparks.

He was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Mollie R. Sparks.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Emily Garnett Sparks of Orange; four children, Thomas N. Sparks Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Midlothian, Philip L. Sparks and his wife, Julie, of Fairfax, Ann Garnett Sparks Freed and her husband, Chris, of Marietta, Ga., and Edward W. Sparks and his wife, Lisa, of Orange; nine grandchildren, Hunter Sparks, Laura Sparks, Dana Sparks, Aaron Freed, Courtney Freed Wawak, Meredith Freed, Mary Anne Sparks, Katie Sparks, and Sara Sparks; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Robert W. Sparks IV and his wife, Elise, of Richmond, and Edward B. Sparks and his wife, Alyson, of Orange.

Mr. Sparks, a native of Orange, was a graduate of Virginia Tech. He served as a B17 pilot in the Army Air Corp during World War II and was active in the Orange Community all of his life. He co-owned and operated the Fray Insurance Agency, Inc. in Orange for 50 years. He served as Secretary of the Orange County Electoral Board for 43 years, stepping down in 2001. He served on both the Town Board of Zoning Appeals and the Orange Planning Commission. He was a charter member and past captain of the Orange County Rescue Squad. He served as Scout Master of Orange Troop 14 for more than 25 years. He was a member of the Orange Rotary Club and the American Legion Post No. 156. He was an active member of the Orange Presbyterian Church since 1948, serving in many capacities.

A memorial funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday afternoon at the Orange Presbyterian Church, the Rev. William Nickels officiating. Interment icon will follow at the Mt. Zion Methodist Church cemetery, Oak Park.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. this evening at the Preddy Funeral Home, Orange.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Orange County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 446, Orange, Va. 22960, or the Orange Presbyterian Church, 162 W. Main St., Orange, Va. 22960.

Edward C. Stevenson

Dr. Edward Carl Stevenson, 95, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002.

Dr. Stevenson, a Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering at the University of Virginia, grew up in Richmond before attending the University of Virginia, where he earned a bachelors of science in Chemistry in 1928, a Masters in Physics in 1929, and a Ph.D. in Physics in 1931.

After graduation, he taught at Harvard University and the U.S. Navy Post-Graduate School at the U.S. Naval Academy before joining the faculty at the University of Virginia in 1950 as Professor of Physics and Electrical Engineering. He retired in 1973.

During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant Commander, U.S. Navy, earning a Bronze Star for meritorious achievement while working on the atomic bomb project in July and August of 1945.

While at the University of Virginia, he was recognized for his many contributions by, among other honors, being elected to ODK, a honorary leadership fraternity, and The Raven Society. He was a member of numerous professional organizations and served on several national committees, including the Army Scientific Advisory Panel.

He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Priddy Stevenson.

He is survived by his sister, Mary Stevenson Peple, and her husband, Dr. Edward C. Peple, of Richmond; a first cousin, Edith M. Shelburne, and her husband, C. Daniel Shelburne, of Southern Pines, N.C.; and five nephews, Dr. Edward C. Peple Jr., of Midlothian, Stephen G. Peple of Richmond, S. Vernon Priddy III, of Richmond, John W. Field, Jr., of Virginia Beach, and Eugene F. Field of Norfolk; also surviving, Dr. John D. Shelburne of Durham, N.C.; Edward M. Shelburne of Whiteville, N.C.; Dr. Thomas M. Shelburne of Elkin, N.C.; and numerous grandnephews and grandnieces.

Burial arrangements are private.

Jane Steffey Briggs

The funeral service for Jane Steffey Briggs will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon at Southside Church. Following, Mama will be buried in Riverview cemetery next to her grandson, Jason. The Rev. Larry Hudson, of Southside Church, will officiate the funeral services.

After the services refreshments will be served at home.

Morris Smith

Morris Smith, 66, of Barboursville, died Friday, July 26, 2002, at his residence. He was born April 13, 1936, in Orange County.

He was the husband of Elizabeth Smith of Barboursville.

Arrangements with Preddy Funeral Home, Gordonsville, are incomplete.

John Marvin Embree

John Marvin Embree, 79, died Monday, July 22, 2002.

He was born Jan. 26, 1923, in Paris, France, to the late Margaret Train Embree Samsonoff and Reginold Marvin Embree, who were studying art at the Sorbonne. He was the stepson of the late Boris Samsonoff, who was a Colonial of the Imperial Guard of the Tsar Nicholas in Russia. His grandfather, Arthur Train, was a noted American author for his series about a lawyer, Ephraim Tutt, and other works.

John was also preceded in death by his sister, Jaqueline Embree Brunet, and two brothers, Ivan Samsonoff and Boe Samsonoff.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Breaznell Embree; her three children, Reginold B. Adams, Anne E. Adams, and Charles B. Adams; his daughter, Margaret Train Embree Davies; four grandchildren, Reginold B. Adams Jr., Rebecca M. Adams, Bonnie L. Adams, and Lillian B. Adams; two step-grandchildren, D. Wade Davies and B. Elliott Davies; two nieces; and several nieces.

John attended the Gunnery School in Washington, Conn., and then went to MIT to study engineering. He worked as an aeronautical engineer at several companies before founding his own companies, Embree Electronics and Computer Dynamics.

After moving to Charlottesville in the sixties, John received a masters in Environmental Science from UVa and founded Helios, a solar energy company, and had several patents for his drainback collectors.

Later, he began Solar Concepts, Inc. John designed the solar controls for the Boston Edison House, as well as the controls for a completely solar powered house in Duchess County, N.Y.

John also had a broker's license and was active in country real estate and development.

Singing was his passion and he was involved in the Hartford, Conn. Opera Company, singing in the chorus with some well-known performers. John also sang in several light operas at Stockbridge, Mass. He sang in many church choirs, most recently at Christ Church in Charlottesville. He was a member of the Oratorio Society for many years.

He will be greatly missed.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff on South Five at Martha Jefferson Hospital and the Hospice of the Piedmont.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. this morning at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 West High St., Charlottesville.

Lacy M. Frazier

The family of Lacy Marshall Frazier will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at Hill & Wood Funeral Home.

Sanger O. Jenkins

Sanger Osburne Jenkins, 97, of Brightwood, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at the Cedars in Charlottesville. He was born Dec. 23, 1904, in Highland County, the son of the late George Edwards Jenkins and Lula Armstrong Jenkins. He was the husband of the late Cora Lee Jenkins.

Mr. Jenkins was retired from E.A. Clore and Sons in Madison and was a member of Beth Car Baptist Church in Madison.

He is survived by two daughters, Louise Smiley of Palmyra, and Lu Zazanis of Herndon; three sons, George E. Jenkins of Charlottesville, W. Lee Jenkins of Madison, and Hermon N. Jenkins of Ocala, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Beth Car Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. R. Wertenbaker Turner Jr. Interment icon will be held at Bybee Road Baptist Church near Zion Crossroads.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel of Madison.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Beth Car Baptist Church, P.O. Box 444, Madison, Va. 22727.
