Thomas N. Sparks
Thomas Newton Sparks, 80, of Orange, died Friday, July 26, 2002. He was born Oct. 16, 1921, in Orange, son of the late Robert Walker Sparks III and Adelaid Bullock Sparks.
He was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Mollie R. Sparks.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Emily Garnett Sparks of Orange; four children, Thomas N. Sparks Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Midlothian, Philip L. Sparks and his wife, Julie, of Fairfax, Ann Garnett Sparks Freed and her husband, Chris, of Marietta, Ga., and Edward W. Sparks and his wife, Lisa, of Orange; nine grandchildren, Hunter Sparks, Laura Sparks, Dana Sparks, Aaron Freed, Courtney Freed Wawak, Meredith Freed, Mary Anne Sparks, Katie Sparks, and Sara Sparks; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Robert W. Sparks IV and his wife, Elise, of Richmond, and Edward B. Sparks and his wife, Alyson, of Orange.
Mr. Sparks, a native of Orange, was a graduate of Virginia Tech. He served as a B17 pilot in the Army Air Corp during World War II and was active in the Orange Community all of his life. He co-owned and operated the Fray Insurance Agency, Inc. in Orange for 50 years. He served as Secretary of the Orange County Electoral Board for 43 years, stepping down in 2001. He served on both the Town Board of Zoning Appeals and the Orange Planning Commission. He was a charter member and past captain of the Orange County Rescue Squad. He served as Scout Master of Orange Troop 14 for more than 25 years. He was a member of the Orange Rotary Club and the American Legion Post No. 156. He was an active member of the Orange Presbyterian Church since 1948, serving in many capacities.
A memorial funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Orange Presbyterian Church, the Rev. William Nickels officiating. Interment
will follow at the Mt. Zion Methodist Church cemetery, Oak Park.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday evening at the Preddy Funeral Home, Orange.

Minnie F. Bache
Aunt Minnie, 95, of Charlottesville, had her homecoming with the Lord on Wednesday, July 24, 2002, in a local hospital.
Born Aug. 26, 1906, in Greene County, she was the daughter of the late Chellie and Scott Shifflett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by seven sisters, Georgia Shifflett, Leona Crawford, and Mattie Hensley, all of Greene County, Maggie Wood and America Mawyer, both of Charlottesville, Lizzie Mowbry of Elkton, and Mary Shifflett of Orange.
Aunt Minnie was a graduate of the Staunton School for the Deaf and Blind and was an active member of the deaf community, both locally and nationally.
She retired to Charlottesville from her job with the federal government in Washington, D.C. after 34 years of service.
She was a member of Jefferson Park Baptist Church and was an active participant in worship there.
Aunt Minnie was a prolific corespondent and consistently wrote letters to friends and family. She was known for even writing thank you notes for the thank you notes she received! One Christmas, she received 960 Christmas cards from friends and family all over the world. Her notes and kind smile will be missed by us all.
She is survived by her sister, Nelie S. Shifflett of Charlottesville; and by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at Teague Funeral Home in Charlottesville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday morning at Teague Funeral Home with Pastor Jeffrey Riddle officiating. Burial will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens.

Anderson Covington
Anderson Carthel Covington, 55, of Orange, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Born July 31, 1946, in Madison County, he was the son of the late Henry Strother and Marie Covington Strother.
Mr. Covington was a retired Washington D.C. Metro driver.
He is survived by his wife, Roboid Washington Covington of Washington D.C.; four daughters, Chisoni Tendai of Los Angeles, Hatina Netsai, Autumn Chimwemwe, and Chaya Marie, all of Washington D.C.; one brother, Ryan Strother of Madison; one sister, Shirley Covington Townsend of Ft. Washington, Md.; six grandchildren, Keir-Jahziel, Tyla, Xian, Quin, Jadyn, and Amari; three nieces, Juilenne, Tiffany, and Danielle; and two great-nieces, Jazmine and Alexus.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the Preddy Funeral Chapel, 250 W. Main St., Orange. Interment
will be private.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

John Marvin Embree
John Marvin Embree, 79, died Monday, July 22, 2002.
He was born Jan. 26, 1923, in Paris, France, to the late Margaret Train Embree Samsonoff and Reginold Marvin Embree, who were studying art at the Sorbonne. He was the stepson of the late Boris Samsonoff, who was a Colonial of the Imperial Guard of the Tsar Nicholas in Russia. His grandfather, Arthur Train, was a noted American author for his series about a lawyer, Ephraim Tutt, and other works.
John was also preceded in death by his sister, Jaqueline Embree Brunet; and two brothers, Ivan Samsonoff and Boe Samsonoff.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Breaznell Embree; her three children, Reginold B. Adams, Anne E. Adams, and Charles B. Adams; his daughter, Margaret Train Embree Davies; four grandchildren, Reginold B. Adams Jr., Rebecca M. Adams, Bonnie L. Adams, and Lillian B. Adams; two step-grandchildren, D. Wade Davies and B. Elliott Davies; two nieces; and several nieces.
John attended the Gunnery School in Washington, Conn., and then went to MIT to study engineering. He worked as an aeronautical engineer at several companies before founding his own companies, Embree Electronics and Computer Dynamics.
After moving to Charlottesville in the sixties, John received a masters in Environmental Science from UVa and founded Helios, a solar energy company, and had several patents for his drainback collectors.
Later, he began Solar Concepts, Inc. John designed the solar controls for the Boston Edison House, as well as the controls for a completely solar powered house in Duchess County, N.Y.
John also had a broker's license and was active in country real estate and development.
Singing was his passion and he was involved in the Hartford, Conn. Opera Company, singing in the chorus with some well-known performers. John also sang in several light operas at Stockbridge, Mass. He sang in many church choirs, most recently at Christ Church in Charlottesville. He was a member of the Oratorio Society for many years.
He will be greatly missed.

Lacy M. Frazier
Lacy Marshall Frazier, 77, of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, in a local hospital.
Born Jan. 25, 1925, in Albemarle County, he was the son of the late Thomas and Minnie Frazier. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Fred, Henry, Wilbur, and Vernon; and a son, Spurgeon Frazier.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a retired sheet metal worker and a devoted member of Belmont Baptist Church for 52 years.
He is survived by his wife, Bessie S. Frazier; a brother, George Frazier and his wife, Peggy, of Thorton, Pa.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday evening at Hill & Wood Funeral Home.

Louise Elliott Johns
Louise Elliott Johns, 96, of Farmville, died Monday, July 22, 2002, at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News.
She was born April 27, 1906, in Buckingham County, to the late Wyatt Garnett and Mary McClure Cox Elliott.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben Samuel Johns; a sister, Marjorie Cooke; a brother, Wyatt Cooke Elliott; and a son-in-law, John W. Anderson Sr.
She is survived by four daughters, Reuben Anne Johns of Windsor, Louise J. Pearson and her husband, Roy, of Williamsburg, Margaret Nijhuis and her husband, Rolf, of Pleasant Valley, N.Y., and Agnes J. Anderson of Crozet; four grandchildren, Cindy Pearson Vaughan and her husband, Benjamin, of Windsor, Michelle Nijhuis of Paonia, Colo., Robert S. Anderson and his wife, Blair, and John W. Anderson Jr. of Crozet; four great-grandchildren, Christopher Vaughan, Blake Anderson, and Sam and Rachael Anderson; two nieces, Barbara Allara and Mary Elizabeth Howard; many other nieces and nephews; and four sisters-in-law, Lucy Johns, Dot Johns, Logan Johns, and Agnes Sweet.
She was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and Circle No. 4. She was also a member of Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was known for her love of reading and crocheting. She was known by her family as the crocheting grandmother, for she completed hundreds of items, such as tablecloths, bedspreads, place mats, toys, and many other items for all of her family and friends.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel in Crozet.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The family will also receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Interment will follow at Smyrna Methodist Church in Sheppards. The Rev. George Henley will officiate.

Ruth S. Parrott
Mrs. Ruth S. Parrott, 91, of Falls Church, passed away Monday, July 22, 2002, of natural causes.
Mrs. Parrott was a member of Columbia Baptist Church in Falls Church and was the widow of William MacDonald Parrott, who had been a deacon at Columbia Baptist Church for many years.
Mrs. Parrott, the former Ruth Sinclair Sandridge, was born Aug. 8, 1910, in Albemarle County, to Logan W. and Hattie W. Sandridge.
She graduated from Crozet High School in Crozet in 1927. She then attended Columbia Bible College, which is now Columbia International University, and went on to work as an executive secretary for many organizations, which included Wheaton Bible College in Wheaton, Ill., U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C., University Baptist Church in Charlottesville, and the Navy Department. She also had many jobs as Church Secretary, the latest one at Vienna Presbyterian Church in Vienna.
Her first husband, Warner W. Wood, whom she married
in 1937, passed away in 1968. She married
"Mac" Parrott in 1975. He passed away in 1996.
Mrs. Parrott had no children, but she had numerous nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly. She helped raise some of them.
She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Marion Hall of Orlando, Fla. and Mrs. Ethel Bass of Lynchburg.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Karl Sandridge, Randolph Sandridge, and Eugene Harrison Sandridge; three sisters, Katie Wright, May Sandridge, and Nan Huston; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. this morning at Columbia Baptist Church, Falls Church. Interment
will be at 3 p.m. this afternoon in Mt. Plain Baptist Church cemetery, Mechum River.

Suzanne L. Whitehurst
Suzanne Langhorne Whitehurst passed away Saturday morning, July 20, 2002. Suzanne was the daughter of the late Caryetta Saunders and Chiswell Dabney Langhorne.
Suzanne spent her childhood years near Keene in Southern Albemarle. She graduated from St. Anne's School and went on to study at Mary Washington College. Suzanne was passionate about socializing with friends and family, playing bridge and tennis, and caring for her children.
Sue was the mother of two sons; Stewart R. Whitehurst III and William L. Whitehurst.
Among those who will miss her deeply are her two sons; two grand children, Makayla and Witt; two nephews, Steve and Dabney; and her many dear friends and extended family.
Suzanne was blessed with her charm and grace, her quiet courage, and her lovely spirit.
There will be no formal service but there will be a gathering and a celebration of her life and of the love that she shared so generously. The gathering will be at 11 a.m. Saturday morning at Christ Church Glendower.
We are planning a picnic so feel free to bring a cooler and/or anything to make yourself comfortable. We hope to share fond memories, enjoy each other's company, and wish for the wellbeing of a special soul.

Millie B. Bond
Millie B. Bond, 88, of the 1100 block of Trestman Ave., Virginia Beach, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002.
Born in Coeburn, Millie was the widow of Clyde M. Bond. She was a retired salesperson with Roses Department Store and a member of New Temple Grove Ministries.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary Jane Root and her husband, Bill, of Virginia Beach; two sons, Bobby G. Bond and his wife, Lois, of Gordonsville and Clyde Hill Bond and his wife, Mary Ann, of Durham, N.C.; a brother, Ray Creed of Abingdon; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel by the Rev. Johnny McDonald and the Rev. Dave Libengood. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday morning in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home.
