Alice T. Bernache
Alice Thomasino Bernache, 95, of Ivy, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at her home. Born in Baltic, Conn., she was the widow of Harold A. Bernache.
She is survived by a daughter, Dr. Barbara Bernache-Baker, of Vieques, Puerto Rico; a son, John Bernache, of Stratton Mountain, Vt.; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two grandchildren.
To her grandchildren especially, she will always occupy a special place in their hearts.
A memorial service for family and friends is being planned.

A memorial service for Evangeline Sizemore Bolick will be held at 1:30 p.m. this afternoon at First Presbyterian Church. Her ashes will be scattered in a private service at her favorite place on the Potomac River.

Randolph Crowder Sr.
Randolph Meredith Crowder, Sr., 65, of Troy, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at his home.
Born Jan. 16, 1937, in Nelson County, he was the son of the late Lewis Meredith and Bertha Johns Crowder.
Mr. Crowder was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church and was self-employed with DeaCro Communications, Inc., a telephone cable company.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Barbara Moore Crowder; one daughter, Deborah L. Crowder; one son, Randolph M. Crowder Jr., all of Troy; one sister, Thelma Bailey and her husband, Edward, of Charlottesville; one niece and nephew; several cousins, friends; and his faithful companion, "Stubby."
The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday morning in the Teague Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Hunter officiating. Interment
will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens.

Lucile Fizer Gooch
Lucile Beverly Fizer Gooch, 80, of Troy, died Sunday, July 21, 2002. She was born June 2, 1922, in Bedford, the daughter of the late Odell and Henrietta Fizer.
She was a graduate of the College of William and Mary with a bachelors degree in Library Science, and received her Masters degree from the University of Virginia.
She worked as a librarian for Albemarle County Schools, and was the media coordinator for Fluvanna County Schools for 28 years.
She was a member of the professional educator's society, Delta Kappa Gamma, past president of the Fluvanna County Library Board, past president of the Fluvanna Arts Council, and a member of many other community service organizations.
She was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dr. Edwin O. Gooch; her children, Stephen and his wife Lissa Gooch, Cheryl and her husband, David Gilliam, John and his wife, Ann Gooch; and seven grandchildren, Megan, Matt, Sarah, and Josh Gooch, and Beth, Charlie, and Lee Gilliam.
Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday at beaver Dam Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bruce Hunter officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. this evening at Beaver Dam Baptist Church.

John Dean Nelson
John Dean Nelson, 53, of Nelson County, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, in a tragic landscaping accident. Born July 13, 1949, in Bellows Falls, Vt., he was a son of the late Henry and Verlie Mae Nelson.
He is survived by four daughters, Heather Lynn Nelson of Free Union, Holly Michelle Buttons of Flemington, N.J., Rebecca Katherine Nelson of Secaucus, N.J., and Abigail Jane Nelson of Bridgeport, Conn.; two sons, John Wade Nelson and Luke James Doyle Nelson, of Tye River, Amherst; two sisters, Dixie Kentopp and Linda Lentini, of Englewood, Fla.; three brothers, Jim of Flemington, N.J., Dale of San Diego, and Henry of Couth Plainfield, N.J.; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in Tye River and burial service in Rosemond, N.J.

Stephen R. Snyder
Stephen Randall "Steve" Snyder, 49, of Brandon, Fla., passed away Monday, July 22, 2002, in Brandon.
A native of Tampa, Fla., he had resided in Nellysford for seven years.
He is survived by his son, Joshua Luke Snyder of Valrico, Fla.; daughter, Kathryn Elizabeth Snyder of Nellysford; mother and stepfather, Pauline and Lynn C. Johnson, of Brandon, Fla.; father, Bill Snyder of Riverview, Fla.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, William Dee and Brenda Snyder Jr., of Morristown, Tenn., and Paul Edward and Julie Snyder, of Tampa, Fla.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Vicki E. and Sonpong Nownco, of Dover, Fla., Patricia Ann and Michael Rodriguez, of Dover, Fla., and Paula Elizabeth Snyder of Brandon, Fla.; three nieces, Angela Snyder, Jennifer Grider, and Sarah Snyder; and five nephews, Thomas Snyder, Justin and Kyle Miller, Philip Snyder, and Brandon Adlesperger.

Rosabelle S. Brown
Rosabelle Sprouse Brown, 89, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at the Martha Jefferson House Infirmary.
She was born Nov. 22, 1912, in Charlottesville, to the late Rebecca Childress Sprouse and James Howell Sprouse. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harry, and a sister, Helen S. Pond.
Mrs. Brown was married
to Harry Jordan Brown Aug. 28, 1932, and was blessed with two children.
She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Sandra Brown Burke; a son, Harry Jordan Brown Jr. and his wife, Teresa; four grandchildren, Lucius Alexander Brown and his wife, Theresa, Jordan A. Jackson, Sandra Jackson Motley, and Rosemary Jackson Summers and her husband, Paul; seven great-grandchildren, Alexandra Read Brown, Wilson Jordan Brown, Rosemary Jackson Motley, Caroline Camp Motley, J. Coleman motley III, Jordan Alabama Summers, and Alexandra Douglas Summers; a sister, Irma S. Stevens and her husband, Lewis Benton; a brother, James Howell Sprouse Jr.; and three nephews and their families.
Belle loved all sports, but especially the game of golf. She was an avid duplicate bridge player.
She was a past member of the Keswick Country Club, Farmington Country Club, and Keswick Hunt Club. She was a member of the Doe Club and the First United Methodist Church.
A loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, "Nanny" will be greatly missed by all her family.
Her family would like to thank the staff of Our Lady Peace for their many years of help and assistance. A special thanks to the Martha Jefferson House Infirmary and its wonderful staff. Their kindness and compassion will always be remembered.

Ora Cox Coleman
Ora Virginia Cox Coleman, 89, of Unionville, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at the Orange County Nursing Home. Born Sept. 7, 1912, in Orange County, she was the daughter of the late Will Cismont Cox and the late Ora Gillum Cox. Her husband was the late Andrew Jackson Coleman Jr.
She was a member of the Unionville Christian Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Anne Coleman Tyree and husband, Garland Tyree, of Somerset, and two grandchildren, Peggie Anne Tyree of Corna, Calif., and Mark Anthony Tyree of Los Angeles.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday from the Preddy Funeral Chapel, Orange, with interment in Oakwood cemetery, Unionville. The Rev. Mort Robson will officiate.

Eleanor Farish Mapes
Eleanor H. Mapes, 80, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, July 20, 2002. Born Feb. 17, 1922, in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert W. Farish Sr., and Sudie Pearl Smith Farish.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Gilbert W. Farish Jr. and Herbert M. Farish, and four sisters, Virginia F. Huttenloch, Doris L. Doyone, Nellie F. Zafra, and Maxine F. Beardslee.
Eleanor was in the first graduating class of Lane Highs School in 1941. Showing her patriotism, she worked with the USO during World War II. Living in Arlington, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and had worked for President Truman in the White House, later retiring from the Pentagon as an administrative assistant. She had neighborhood child evangelism classes at her home and she moved to Staunton from Arlington in May 2002.
She is survived by a brother, Carl N. Farish and his wife, Carrie; a sister, Barbara H. Melvin and her husband, Mark; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

James Preston Mays
James Preston Mays, 79, of Upper Tract, W.Va., died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 1, 1922, in Charlottesville, the son of the late Charlie P. and May Wingfield Mays.
He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the VFW, and was a Baptist by faith. He had worked for the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C.
On July 2, 1987, he married
Betty Jo Nelson Mowery Mays, who survives him.
Also surviving is a son, Charles Allen Mays, of Lapata, Md.; three stepdaughters, Doris Dalrymple of Lapata, Md., Carol Wilson of Crozet, and Robin Jones of Frederick, Md.; four stepsons, Barry Maupin of Mechanicsville, David Mowery Sr. of Upper Tract, W.Va., James Mowery Sr. of Upper Tract, W.Va., and Steve Mowery of Virginia Beach; one sister, Kathleen "Kitty" Morris of Crozet; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son and one brother.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday evening at the Hill & Wood Funeral Home.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday morning in the Oakwood cemetery.
Ned Motola
Ned Motola, 71, of Crozet, died Saturday, July 13, 2002. Born 1931, in Bronx, N.Y., to Joseph and the late Allegra Motola.
In addition to his father, he is survived by two children, Marissa Minnerly and Natasha Smith; one brother, Gabriel Motola; three grandchildren, Sophia, Julia, and Lily; and numerous other relatives and friends.
