Cecil Dewitt Boyles
Cecil Dewitt Boyles, 80, a native of Louisiana, who previously resided in Falls Church, Va., and Winter Springs, Fla., died Sunday, July 14, 2002.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cecilia Raustis Boyles; a daughter, Mary June Howell; his parents, Dewitt Boyles and Ollie Stewart Boyles; two sisters, Myrtle Brannon and Margie Hutchinson; and one brother, Glynn Boyles.
Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Hughes of San Diego, Calif. and Ann Susan "Sue" Gilbert of Scottsville, Va.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Boyles served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a retired real estate broker.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. this evening at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville, Va. A funeral service will follow at 7 p.m.
Burial is scheduled at 11 a.m. Friday in Quantico National cemetery, Triangle, Va.
The family requests that flowers please be omitted and memorial contributions considered for the American Lung Association or the American Cancer Society.
Pearl D. Branham
Pearl Davis Branham, 90, of Charlottesville, departed this life Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at RoseWood Village.
She was born May 22, 1912, the daughter of the late Thomas Oscar Davis and Flossie Gunter Davis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Burton Branham, in 1985; two brothers, Joseph Davis and William Davis; and a sister, Mabel Davis Gibson.
Pearl was a member of the Belmont Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and was a frequent soloist. She was a member of the Ruth Class and the Tuesday Morning Adult Bible Study there as well.
Pearl was educated at the old Midway School in Charlottesville, and also attended the Miller School of Albemarle in 1928, the last year that girls were admitted.
She retired from Albemarle Weaving Company after more than 40 years of service, and was employed parttime in the tax department at Charlottesville City Hall for seven years.
She is survived by a sister, Ruby Taylor of Scottsville; a brother, Robert Davis of West Virginia; two devoted daughters, Betty Glass Paine of Charlottesville, and Janet Cutright and her husband, Ronald, of North Garden; and five grandchildren, Vali Shoop and her husband, Paul, and their children, Brandon and Lindsay, Lisa Utz and her husband, David, and their children, Kyle and Adam, all of Charlottesville, Brad Cutright and his wife, Maryellen, and their children, Claire and Carly, of LaGrange, Texas, Dr. Barry Cutright and his wife, Dr. Martha Cutright, and their children, Kimberly and Hunter, of Danville; and C. Burton Cutright and his wife, Rebecca, and their children, Chandler and Corey, of Suffolk.
Pearl will be remembered for her sweet smile, her youthful appearance, and her impeccable dress. Family will remember her delicious homemade Hawaiian Delight pies, pound cakes, and fresh strawberry preserves, as well as her remarkable ability to work crossword puzzles in ink, her strong will, and her desire for perfection in everything she did. Her greatest joy the last several years of her life was attending the JABA Adult Day Healthcare Center, where the staff provided her with a quality of life made possible only through their genuine love and care.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Belmont Baptist Church, 830 Monticello Ave., with the Rev. Edward Hopkins and the Rev. Gary T. Dalton officiating. Interment
will follow in Holly memorial Gardens.

A memorial service for Thomas J. Cox will be at 7:30 p.m. this evening at Cherry Avenue Christian Church of Charlottesville. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment

Lorenzo M. Haden Jr.
Lorenzo Matthew Haden Jr. of Charlottesville departed this life on Friday, July 12, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He was born Oct. 2, 1979, at the University of Virginia Medical Center and is resting in peace with the Lord.
He attended the C.F. Richards Christian School in Staunton and graduated from Charlottesville High School in 1998.
His greatest interests were sports, baseball, having played on the Charlottesville High School team, and the city league teams, and his family.
At an early age he attended the Evergreene Baptist Church on Proffit and later attended the First Baptist Church in Charlottesville.
"Jay", whom he was affectionately called, leaves to cherish his memories, his loving parents, Lorenzo and Laura Haden; two devoted brothers, Brian and Christopher Haden, all of Charlottesville; his fiancée, Kim Hotsapple of Charlottesville; three great-grandmothers, Rosalle Brown of Proffit, Nannie Washington of Howards, Maine, and Amy Haden of Charlottesville; two devoted grandmothers, Shirley Brown of Proffit and Josephine Haden of Charlottesville; one grandfather, Arthidous Haden of Charlottesville; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Main St., with the Rev. Stanley Woodfolk officiating. Interment
will follow in Oakwood cemetery.

Elsie B. Johnson
Elsie B. Johnson, 80, of Cobham, entered into eternal rest Saturday, July 13, 2002, at Martha Jefferson Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late Collin and Elsie Byrd. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Walter Johnson.
She was a faithful member of St. John Baptist Church, Cobham.
She leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Walter Johnson and his wife, Rosa, of Chesapeake and the Rev. Nate Brown of Charlottesville; three daughters, Joan Johnson, Madelean Hughes and her husband, James, and Elsie Johnson and her husband, Charles, all of Cobham; four brothers, Harry Byrd and Robert Gardner, both of Cobham, James Gardner of Goochland, and George Gardner of Charlottesville; five sisters, Alice Hughes, Betty Byrd, and Eleanor White, all of Ohio, Lillian Byrd of Cobham, and Margurite of New York; five grandchildren, Deborah, Shawn, Diedra, Michelle, O.J.; five great-grandchildren, Ryan, Courtney, Tyler, Dionna, and Dante; six sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; three special friends, Gloria Byrd, Geraldine Johnson, and Ella Brown; devoted niece and caregiver, Ernestine Holland-Murray; and a host of other beloved relatives and friends.

Irene Drezek Kopek
Irene Drezek Kopek, 76, of Lynchburg, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at Lynchburg General Hospital. Her husband was the late John David Kopek
Born Feb. 18, 1926, in Utica, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Lawrence Drezek and Sophie Gadziola Drezek.
Mrs. Kopek retired from the Virginia Credit Union League and was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church.
She is survived by her daughters, Donna K. Wingfield and her husband, Danny, of Forest, Marla R. Mitchell and her husband, Bill, of Marietta, Ga., and Karen D. Kopek of Charlottesville, and three grandchildren, Monica Mitchell, Wes Mitchell, and Derek Wingfield.
A Liturgy of the Resurrection will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, with the Rev. Kevin J. O'Brien officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Rd., and at all other times at her daughter Donna's home, 89 Jameswood Dr., Forest.

James Warren Rose
James Warren Rose, 55, of Orange, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at the Martha Jefferson Hospital. He was born April 26, 1947, in Gordonsville, the son of Mary Lou Reynolds Rose and the late James Andrew Rose.
Mr. Rose is survived by his wife, Carolyn McClary Rose; his son, James "Warren" Rose Jr. and wife, Rebecca, of Louisa; two daughters, Tonya O'Gorman and husband, John, of Barboursville, and Wendy Rose of Charlottesville; two sisters, Nancy Lee Haney of Orange, and Janice M. LaPrade of Orange; two aunts, Nellie Lee Price of Orange, and Edna Reynolds of Warrenton; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Tommie L. Thomas Sr.
Tommie Lee Thomas Sr. departed this life Monday, July 15, 2002 at Martha Jefferson Hospital. He was born Nov. 23, 1931, in Fluvanna County, the son of the late Percy A. and Annie Hatcher Thomas.
He attended public schools in Fluvanna County and was employed by George Wood Machine Shop for 25 years before going to Con-Agra Frozen Foods, where he retired in 1993.
Tommie loved to work and keep busy, he then started working for Seminole Produce as a truck driver.
Tommie was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Tank Platoon and a veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He joined church at an early age and was an active member. He served on the trustee board and was a member of the senior choir until his health began to fail.
Tommie loved life and family, and was a friend to everyone.
He was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. and Mrs. Percy Thomas, and two brothers, the Rev. Waverly N. Thomas and Deacon Wingfield Thomas.
Tommie leaves to mourn his passing, a devoted wife, of 36 years, Elaine Thomas; two sons, Tommie Lee Thomas Jr. of Palmyra, and Curtis Bradley of Gordonsville; five daughters, Tommisean Thomas, Brigette Brown, and Tommea Thomas, of Charlottesville, Michelle Griggs of Orange, and Tranese Thomas of Palmyra; four brothers, James of Newport News, Earl of Richmond, and Willis and Arthur, of Palmyra; one sister, Myrtle Lipscomb of Palmyra; two sons-in-law, Christopher Brown and John Griggs; five brothers-in-law, Calvin Bruce, Glen Bruce, Leon Bowles, of Palmyra, and Carl Jackson and George Bruce Jr., of Louisa; seven sisters-in-law, Patricia Bruce of Stockton, Calif., Gwendolyn Bruce of Baltimore, Shirley Thomas of Richmond, Gail Bowles, Ernestine Thomas, Annie Thomas, Doris Thomas, and Barbara Bruce, of Palmyra; ten grandchildren, Larsco, Indea, Shae, Jakara, LeAngela, Chris, Nakiyah, Christen, Dennis, and Curtis; two great-grandchildren, Destiny and La'Asia; a devoted friend, Charlie Jones of Waynesboro; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.

Herbert Calvin Bethel Jr., 60, of Keswick, died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at his home.
Born Oct. 13, 1941, in Albemarle County, he was the son of the late Herbert C. and Ivy Lucille Brown Bethel.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Mawyer Bethel of Keswick; a son, Doug Bethel of Keswick; two stepsons, Tom Bradley of Covesville and David Bradley of Louisiana; one sister, Nancy Bethel; three brothers, Steven Bethel, Stewart Bethel, and Guy Bethel, all from Roanoke, one uncle; and numerous aunts, nieces, and nephews.
The family would like to express their special thanks to Dr. Michael Santulli and to Vivian Dean, as well as the staff at the Zion Crossroads Dialysis Center, for all their loving care.

Ferol Oliver Briggs Jr.
Ferol Oliver Briggs Jr., 71, of Gordonsville, died Saturday, July 6, 2002, at his residence.
Born Nov. 4, 1930, in Fredericksburg, he was a son of the late Ferol Oliver Briggs Sr. and Lilly Tucker Briggs.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was retired from the University of Virginia School of Architecture, where he served as librarian.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. this afternoon in Mt. Maria Methodist Church cemetery in White Hall with the Rev. Carmon Hartsfield officiating.
