Glennis H. Cosner
Glennis H. Cosner, 65, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Glennis was born Dec. 28, 1936, in Baltimore, but relocated to Crozet with her family early in life. She was the daughter of Beulah S. Holley and the late Richard C. Holley of Crozet.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Annette Marie Cosner, yet, survived by her devoted companion of 19 years, Joseph "Boyd" Walton of Troy; three children, Sidney L. Cosner and his wife, Sharon, of Troy, Dillard W. Cosner of Keswick, and Tracey Cosner-Duncan and her husband, Robbie, of Troy; six and ½ grandchildren, Christina, Joshua, Victoria, Katelin, Lauren, Darian, and the ½, better known as Rebel – devoted black dog; her brother, Richard W. Holley of Charlottesville, and his wife, Annette, and his son, Kenneth; and an adopted brother, Roy Shifflett of Baltimore.
Before joining the staff at University of Virginia Human Resources, she was a registered nurse with Martha Jefferson Hospital. She recently retired in Dec. of 2001, after 22 years of service. She dedicated her life to loving and caring for all that she came in contact with. To be an acquaintance was to be a friends and to be loved by her was being loved like no other.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at Hill & Wood Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday morning at Beaver Dam Baptist Church with the Rev. Bruce Hunter officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.

Ruth Campbell Falls
Ruth Campbell Falls, 87, of Rhue Hollow Road, passed away suddenly on Sunday, July 14, 2002.
Born Nov. 11, 1914, in Nelson County, she was a daughter of the James and Gertrude Mawyer Campbell. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years, Hawthorne F. Falls on July 14, 1986.
Mrs. Falls was a lifetime member of Beech Grove Christian Church. She was active in Piney Mountain Bible Chapel, very active with the Rockfish JABA Senior Citizens, and retired from the Nelson County school system after many years of service. She enjoyed gardening and was devoted to her family, with whom she enjoyed traveling.
She is survived by a son, Donald T. Falls (Eleanor) of Waynesboro; three daughters, Bernice F. Sutphin (Gene) of Troutville, Betty Lou F. Campbell (Davis) of Waynesboro, and Rhonda F. Saunders (Larry) of Charlottesville; two sisters, Pauline C. Patrick and Mary C. Puckett; eight grandchildren, Tedford (Sherry) Falls, Jeffrey (Terri) Falls, Donna Lee Falls Koehler (George), Dennis E. Sutphin (Elizabeth), Edgar Lynn Campbell (Pam), Candace Campbell-Rhodenizer (Gene), Sarah E. Saunders, and David A. Saunders; two step-grandchildren, Brenda Sutphin Shaw (Bill) and Joseph P. Sutphin (Fonda); 12 great-grandchildren, Jenna Falls, Brooke Falls, Dakota Falls, Gabriel Falls, Ryan Koehler, Rachel Koehler, Ashley Spears, Adam Sutphin, John Sutphin, Victoria Sutphin, Brandon Campbell, and Brittanie Campbell; three step-great-grandchildren, Dustin Sutphin (Pam), Brandon Sutphin, and Kelly Sutphin; two step-great-great-grandchildren, Michael and Kistin; and a number of nieces, nephews, and many loving relatives and friends in the community, to whom the family wishes to express appreciation for all their kindness.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at Beech Grove Christian Church, with burial in Beech Grove cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be her grandsons.
Emily Ruth Griffith
Emily Ruth Griffith, 39, of Callaway, Md., died Friday, July 12, 2002, at her home.
Born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, of American parents, Meredith Leitch III and Ruth Crane Leitch. Emily moved with her family the following year to the United States. She was raised in Stamford, Conn., where she graduated from Rippowam High School. She attended the University of Connecticut in Storrs.
She was the beloved wife of Dirk Griffith and devoted mother to Katherine.
In addition to her husband and daughter, she is survived by her mother, Ruth Leitch of Charlottesville; her siblings and their families, Katherine Burns and her husband, Clark, of Columbia, Md., Elizabeth Cooke and her husband, David, of Charlottesville, Meredith Leitch IV and his wife, Pamela, of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Anne Naccarato and her husband, Thomas, of Rockville, Md.; and nine nieces and nephews.
Emily was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Chaptico, Md. She was beloved by many alumni and friends of St. Mary's College, where she worked for the last 14 years. Emily loved reading, especially mysteries, cooking, and hiking, especially in Maine.
A memorial service will be held today at Christ Church in Chaptico, Md., with Dr. Samuel C. Walker officiating.

Betty Lou Hawes
Betty Lou Hawes 64 of Louisa, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at her residence.
She was born March 26, 1938, in Washington, D.C. the daughter of the late William D. Harvey and Erna Grishkot Harvey who lives in Utah.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, William D. Harvey Jr.
She was a member of the Good Shepard Lutheran Church in Orange.
In addition to her mother, Mrs. Hawes is survived by her husband, Paul Ronald Hawes of Louisa; one daughter, Janet Denise Barlow and her husband, Danny, of Louisa; two brothers, Paul R. Hawes Jr. and his wife, Peggy, of Edgewater, Md. and James Michael Hawes and his wife, Hope, of Dunkirk, Md.; and three grandchildren, Michael Paul Hawes and Mark Wesley Hawes, both of Taylorsville, Utah, and Crystal Marie Moran of Louisa.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Gordonsville.

Sharron H. Shackelford
Sharron H. Shackelford, 55, of Richmond, died suddenly on Monday, July, 15, 2002.
She was employed with VCU Health Systems Hospital in the Department of Radiology for 25 years.
In addition to her mother, Arlene Huff of Earlysville, Sharron is survived by her husband, Thomas L. Shackelford of Richmond; two children, Tammy Whitaker of Dunedin, Fla. and Mark Garrison of Charlottesville; two brothers, Cavil Huff of Earlysville and Lee Huff of Troy; and five step-children, all of Charlottesville.

Robert W. Stitzer Jr.
Robert Wade Stitzer Jr., 40, of Alexandria, formerly of Richmond and Bremo Bluff, died suddenly Saturday, July 13, 2002.
Wade was preceded in death by his father, Robert W. Stitzer Sr.
He is survived by his mother, Patricia Williams Chewning and his devoted stepfather, S. Thomas Chewning Jr., both of Bremo Bluff; two sisters, Lacy Stitzer Barrett of Palmyra and Leigh Anne Chewning of Bremo Bluff; two nephews, much loved and adored by Wade, Dustin Parrish of Palmyra and Michael Chewning of Bremo Bluff; and other family and friends.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. this evening at Colbert Funeral Home, Bremo Bluff.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon in the Grace Episcopal Church cemetery, Bremo Bluff. The Rev. Peter Way will officiate.
Alverta Shiflett Swain
After a lengthy illness, Alverta Swain died Sunday, July 14, 2002, in Portsmouth.
She was born in Earlysville, granddaughter of John D. Early, for whom this place gets its name. Her parents were Sadie Early Irving and Willie C. Irving of Earlysville.
She was a member of Westhaven Baptist Church in Portsmouth. She was also a member at-large of beta Sigma Phi International and helped to form the first chapter, and was president and charter member of the first chapter in Manassas, and charter member of the second chapter as well.
She was a former member of the Chautauqua Club in Riverton, Wyo., and was a member of Riverton Chapter No. 21 Order of the Eastern Star. The Swains lived in Riverton for nine years and was in the tile and cultured marble business.
Mrs. Swain was predeceased by her grandfather; her parents; her stepfather, Amos Shiflett; her brother, William R. Irving; a half brother, Edward Shiflett; her first husband, Jesse Shiflett; a daughter, Shirley Sklany; a grandson, Edward Birckhead of Charlottesville; and two great-granddaughters, Jessica Amanda Dalton and Maline Leigh Spaid of Charlottesville.
She is survived by her husband, Grover J. Swain of Portsmouth; a sister and brother-in-law, Estelle and Howard Wilkerson of Sedona, Ariz.; two half sisters, Rose Berger of Manassas and Joyce and Roy Ritenour of Sumerduck; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jesse J. Shiflett and his wife, Trudi, of Fayetteville, N.C. and Richard G. Shiflett and his wife, Lutie, of Earlysville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia S. Birckhead and her husband, Edward, of Pinedale, Wyo. and Rochelle S. Wade and her husband, David, of Richmond; a stepson and his wife, Stephen and Sharon Swain of Jacksonville, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nephews and nieces, all loved dearly; and a son-in-law, T.J. Sklany of Charlottesville.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon at the Hill & Wood Chapel with the Rev. Thomas Wood. Interment
will follow in Monticello Memory Gardens.

Mark David Linkswiler Jr. died early Saturday morning, July 13, 2002, in Charlottesville. David was born July 12, 1980, in Lowmoor.
He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Elizabeth Linkswiler; two brothers, Luke Eric Linkswiler and Matthew Lewis Linkswiler, both of Charlottesville; his father and stepmother, Mark and Kathy Linkswiler, of Charlottesville; his mother, Peggy Middleton of Covington; and many aunts, uncles, grandparents, and extended family.
A graveside service will be conducted 4:30 p.m. this afternoon at Holly Memorial Gardens, with Pastor Rob Stubblefield officiating.
