Jessie Wilson Morris
Jessie Wilson Morris, 53, of Stanardsville, passed away Friday, July 12, 2002, at his home. He was born Aug. 14, 1948, in Albemarle County, a son of Winnie Leigh Morris Tulloh of Dyke and the late Linwood Morris.
He is survived by his fiancée, Marilyn Sullivan of Stanardsville; a son, Jessie Roy Morris of Stanardsville; a stepdaughter, Angela Sullivan of Stanardsville; two brothers, Edward Morris and wife, Sylvia "Pepper" Morris, and David Morris, of Toledo, Ohio; two grandchildren, Christina and Justice Anton; a number of nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by a son, Paul Burton Morris, and two sisters, Mabel Morris and Illa Morris.
Jessie's Passion was working in his garage and spending time with family and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Ryan Funeral Chapel, Quinque, with the Rev. C.C. Kurtz officiating.
Gladys I. Sandridge
Gladys I. Sandridge passed away Saturday, July 13, 2002, at Martha Jefferson Hospital. She was born Feb. 26, 1920, in Albemarle County, the daughter of the late Jesse Adam and Ruth Roberts Shifflett.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mervin W. Sandridge; her grandson, Justin Wade Sandridge; her son-in-law, Elwood Conley; her sister, Anna Garrison; her brothers, Alvin, Clinton, and Jesse Shifflett; and her brother-in-law, Everett Thomas.
She is survived by her three children, Bootsie Sandridge and his wife, Lisa, Carol Conley, and Brenda Morris and her husband, Ronnie, all of White Hall; a grandson whom she raised, Greg Sandridge and his wife, Becky, of Boonesville; other grandchildren, Ricky Conley, Denise Houchens and her husband, Chris, Dale Conley, Eric Morris and his wife, Kristin, Tanya Morris, Jared Morris, Lori Raines, Travis Sandridge and his wife, Jennifer, Heather Sandridge, Meghan Sandridge, and Brandon Catalfu; 14 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Mae Thomas, and Faye Gibson and her husband, Cecil, of White Hall; her brother, Garwood Shifflett and his wife, Dorothy, of Charlottesville; her sisters-in-law, Earline Shifflett, and Genevieve Shifflett, of White Hall, and Anne Fitzgerald of Waynesboro; her brother-in-law, Morgan Garrison of White Hall; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Bill and Jo Faris, of Farmville.

Family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at Teague Funeral Home and other times at the home of Mrs. Sandridge.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Moriah Methodist Church in White Hall, with Brother Edwin Deane and Brother Bruce Morris officiating. Interment
will be in the church cemetery.

Alverta Irving Shiflett Swain of Portsmouth died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at her home.

Barbara Morris Jordan
Barbara Ann Morris Jordan, 66, of Kents Store, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at her home.
She was born Nov. 16, 1935, in Fluvanna County, daughter of the late Harry Walker Morris and Harriett Lucille Kirkpatrick Morris.
Barbara was a graduate of the 1957 Class of Johnston Willis Nursing School and a retired R.N. She was a member of Byrd Chapel United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her beloved husband, O. Burgess Jordan of Kents Store; one daughter, Susan Jordan-Fell and her husband, Donald, of Atlanta; three sons, Edwin B. Jordan and his wife, Elizabeth, of Tallahassee, Fla., Jay Morris Jordan and his wife, Cheryl, of Kents Store, and Henry C. Jordan of Augusta, Ga.; one brother, Milas Edwin Morris and his wife, Becky, of Glen Allen; and eight grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Sheridan Funeral Home, Kents Store.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday morning in Byrd Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Jim Thornton.

Doris E. Mathes
Doris Eyre Mathes, 88, of Charlottesville, died Thursday, July 11, 2002.
She was born Aug. 19, 1913, in Woodberry, Conn. She was a retired legal secretary and a member of the Church of Our Saviour.
Survivors include her husband, Carleton K. Mathes of Charlottesville; a daughter, Susan M. Frazier and her husband, Robert, of Free Union; four grandchildren, Matthew Priddy and his wife, Kelly McConnell, Joel Priddy, Mark Frazier, and Carol Eichelberger and her husband, Preston; and three great-grandchildren, Sophie Priddy, Allie and Lane Eichelberger.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. this morning at Church of Our Saviour, with the Rev. Harold Hallock officiating.
Interment will follow in the church yard.

Everette W. Slater Jr.
Everette W. Slater Jr., 78, of Charlottesville, died Thursday, July 11, 2002.
Born July 22, 1923, in Port Chester, N.Y., he was the son of the late Everette W. Slater Sr. and Hilda Merritt Slater.
Mr. Slater was retired from the Arnold Bakery Co. and was a veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Muriel Slater; a daughter, Joyce Chittenden and her husband, Robert; a son, Herbert Gazzigli and his wife, Barbara; seven grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday evening at the Craft Memorial Home, Port Chester, N.Y.

Hazel Brittain Birckhead, 75, of Scottsville, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at a local hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles M. Birckhead; her parents, Stanley and Elizabeth Brittain; and five brothers, Garfield, Calvin, Robert, George, and Bill Brittain.
Survivors include one daughter, Peggy B. Noble and her husband, Clarence, of Arvonia; two sons, Freddie "Mack" Birckhead and his friend, Lisa Robinson, and Roger D. Birckhead and his wife, Vicki, all of Scottsville; two sisters, Louise Alvey of Maryland and Elvie Davis of North Carolina; four grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. this afternoon at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville, with the Rev. James C. Jetton officiating.
Interment will follow in Scottsville cemetery.

John Thomas Boulden Jr., 23, of Chesapeake, passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2002, after a short battle with cancer.
He was a member of Unity Freewill Baptist Church in Chesapeake.
Born on Dec. 4, 1978, he is survived by his mother, Pamela Roberts of Chesapeake; his father and stepmother, John and Diane Boulden of Palmyra; his sisters, Sarah Powell and Angela Aceves both of Virginia Beach; his step-brother, Richard A. Ray II of Charleston, W.Va.; his grandparents, Charles and Myrtle Boulden of Esmont and Jay C. and Sarah "Kitty" Roberts of Virginia Beach; four nephews; and many more family and friends.
Family and friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home in Scottsville.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. George's Catholic Church cemetery in Scottsville.

Athelene Williams Branham, 85, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., formerly of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, in a Fort Lauderdale hospital.
Born Dec. 4, 1916, in Wilcoe, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Edward B. and Molly Hurd Williams and was the wife of the late Robert N. Branham Jr.
Mrs. Branham retired as a nurse with the Martha Jefferson Hospital.
She is survived by a brother, Edward B. Williams of Margate, Fla.; two sisters, Sue A. Falin of Indian Harbor Beach, Fla. and Virginia W. Gull of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Camille Falwell of Charlottesville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Clyde L. Catlett Sr.
Clyde Lewis Catlett Sr., 72, of Buckingham County, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Molly Weaver Catlett; his parents, George Alfred Catlett and Irene Shores Catlett; and a sister, Anne Catlett Maples.
Survivors include three children, Clyde L. "Butch" Catlett Jr. and his wife, Penny, of Buckingham County, Jefferson Moody Catlett and his wife, Cindy, of Charlottesville, and Constance C. Maddox and her husband, Henry D. "Buzz" Maddox Jr., of Amherst; two sisters, Louise Haislip and Eleanor Mae Cole, both of Maryland; three brothers, Billy, Ralph, and Lloyd Catlett, all of Buckingham County; and he was a devoted grandfather and "PawPaw' to Hunter-Ashley Catlett, Caleb and Cody Catlett, "J.T." Jakubowski, and Chad and Clay Maddox.
Prior to his retirement, Mr. Catlett was a self-employed merchant at Catlett's Store, Buckingham, and he had run a trucking business. He served more than nine years in the U.S. Navy.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Centenary United Methodist Church cemetery, Centenary, with the Rev. James O. Radford officiating.
There are no viewing hours scheduled.
The family expresses appreciation to Hospice of the Piedmont, University of Virginia Cancer Center, and the Central Virginia Community Health Center, New Canton.
