Llewellyn Johnston
Llewellyn Johnston, 75, of Palmyra, passed away Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Johnston; a son, Martin Johnston and his wife, Susan, of Richmond; a daughter, Jacquelyn Curran and her husband, Frank, of Annapolis, Md.; two grandsons, Adam and Wyatt Johnston; and a granddaughter, Allyson Curran.
A native of Highland County, Va., he was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran. He was retired from Virginia Power in 1990, as an engineer, after 42 years of service.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, at Christ United Methodist Church, 6818 W. Grace St., Richmond, Va.
Interment will be private.

Gary Keith Lewis
Gary Keith Lewis of Louisa went to be with the Lord Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002, at his home. He was born May 6, 1944, in Cumberland, Md.
He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Michael and Catherine Ralko, and his sister, Patty Shopes.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Lewis; his son, Gary Keith Lewis Jr. of Sykesville, Md.; stepsons, Michael Craig Shifflett of Ruckersville and James Timothy Shifflett of Earlysville; stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Richard and Rebecca Lynn Layne, of Louisa; brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Vickie Lewis, of Joppa, Md.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Janice and Tom Jessop, of Salem, S.C., Sondra Pritz of Baltimore, and Kathleen and Wayne Roach, of Baltimore; two grandchildren, Waylon and Jessica Shifflett; special friend, Don Shopes; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Lewis served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Full Gospel Assembly, Charlottesville.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. this afternoon at Woodward Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Ronnie Sipes will officiate.
Interment will be at the Middle River Holiness cemetery in Stanardsville.
Thelma Jones Martin
Mrs. Thelma Jones Martin, 95, widow of Archie Lee Martin, died after an illness Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at Marion County Medical Center. Mrs. Martin was born June 8, 1907, in Marion County, a daughter of the late Duncan and Mary Elizabeth Sawyer Jones.
Mrs. Martin was a homemaker and a member of Center United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a son, Robert Steve Martin of Mullins, S.C.; two daughters, Elizabeth Burroughs of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Gladys Ann Morin of Louisa; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at Cox-Collins Funeral Home, Mullins, S.C.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday afternoon at the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home, Mullins, S.C., with the Rev. William C. Jacobs and the Rev. Jerry L. Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Center United Methodist Church cemetery.

A memorial service for Mary M. McClennen will be held at 3 p.m. this afternoon at Mount Moriah Church, interment will be in the church cemetery. The Rev. John Brenneke will officiate.

Ann Meiking Miller
Ann Meiking Miller, 71, formerly Middleburg and Leesburg, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at Westminster-Canterbury. Born Feb. 17, 1931, in Bangor, Wis., she was the daughter of the late Clarence H. and Irene R. Meiking.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Harold E. Miller Jr.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in New Haven, Conn., and the Leesburg Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Miller is survived by her two daughters, Lisa Miller Sherman of Middleburg, and Lauren Miller Ahrens of Scottsville, and their husbands; her brother, Richard J. Meiking of New York; sisters-in-law, Nancy Miller Kendrick of North Carolina, and Kiki Miller Young or Arizona; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Upperville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont.
Helen Dudley Morris
Our beloved mother, Helen Louise Dudley Morris, went home to Jesus Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002. Born March 30, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Henry H. and Cora Sprouse Dudley.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles A. Morris, whom she loved dearly; her grandson, Charles E. "Chuck" Morris; a sister, Ruby Colvin; and three brothers, Clarence, Billy, and Henry R. Dudley.
She is survived by her children, Danny Morris of North Garden, Charles Morris of Crozet, Janet Litton and her husband, Charlie, of Schuyler, and Pamela Thomas and her husband, Lawrence, of Schuyler; two sisters, Martha Gray and her husband, Charles, and Mary Cottle; one sister-in-law and best friend, Cornelia Dudley; grandchildren, Tracie and Greg Harvey, Laurie Morris, Ashley Litton, Andy and Shawn Thomas, and Scott and Randolph Thomas; great-grandchildren, Kyle, Caitlin, and Dylan Harvey, Matthew Barbour, and Monica, Mason, and Randall Thomas; and two stepsisters, Barbara Pleasants and her husband, Freddie, and Nancy Wood and her husband, Eddie.
Mom was a devoted Christian and member of Hardware Baptist Church. She loved her family with all her heart. She loved the Lord and through all her fights with illness, the Lord and her family were her strength and was what kept her going. She was a precious Angel to her children and will be missed deeply.
Special thank you's to Cornelia Dudley, who stayed with mom two days a week and shared her humming; her sister, Mary, who was by her side every morning, bright and early; and her sister, Martha, for trying to fatten her up with her yummy lemon pies and all the other foods she brought her. God Bless You.
Thanks to the Kidney Center and Renal Unit for your care of our mother. She considered you all a part of her family. Thanks to everyone that sent cards, letters, gifts, phone calls, etc., over the years when mom was sick.

Lottie C. Shipp
Lottie Crist Bryant Shipp of Charlottesville passed away Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, at a local hospital. She was born in Nelson County the daughter of the late Thomas L. and Mary Purvis Crist.
She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Ernest T. Bryant and David H. Shipp; three sisters, Christine Giles, Bernelle Pritchett, and Dillie Jackson; and four brothers, Gilbert, Earnest, William, and Linwood Crist.
Lottie was retired from Centel with 30 years of service, was a member of the Charlottesville Moose Lodge No. 731, and Calvary Baptist Church.
She is survived by three children, Barbara Bryant Napier and her husband, Jimmy, of Troy, Morris Lee Bryant and his wife, Nancy, of Mineral, and David R. "Randy" Shipp and his wife, Debbie, of Charlottesville; three sisters, Frances Cooke of Charlottesville, Janet Cash and her husband, Charles, of Troy, and Ruby Chiara and her husband, Joe, of Harrisburg, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. Monday morning in Riverview cemetery, with the Rev. Rick Sadler officiating.

Albert S. Bacon Jr.
Mr. Albert Sidney Bacon Jr., 67, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at his residence.
He was a 1957 graduate of Georgia Teachers College. He coached basketball and taught math at Glenwood High School for two years. Mr. Bacon managed Morrison's Cafeteria in Savannah, Columbus, and Atlanta, Ga. He was a retired owner of Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants in Charlottesville. He was the past president of Charlottesville-Albemarle Virginia Restaurant Association. He was an avid supporter of the University of Virginia and Georgia Southern University athletics. He enjoyed hunting, surf fishing, and especially his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Geyer and two brothers, Layton P. Bacon and Harry M. Bacon.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Brantley Bacon of Statesboro, Ga.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Albert Sidney Bacon III and his wife, Angela, of Savannah, Ga. and Gregory Riley Bacon and his wife, Sarah Elizabeth, of Statesboro, Ga.; three grandchildren, Dylan Bird Bacon, Sarah Elaine Bacon, and Sydney Elise Bacon, all of Statesboro, Ga.; one brother, Thomas H. Bacon of Pembroke, Ga.; one sister, Catherine B. Brown of McRae, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at Hodges-Turner-Anderson Funeral Home, Statesboro, Ga.
Funeral services for Mr. Bacon will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning in the chapel of Hodges-Turner-Anderson Funeral Home, Statesboro, Ga., with Elder Kurt Bacon and Roger Sims officiating.
Burial will be in Northside cemetery in Pembroke, Ga.

Ronald Wayne Franklin, 54, of Charlottesville, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at his home.

Walton D. Morris Sr.
Walton Davis Morris Sr., 76, of Earlysville, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at his home. He was born Nov. 15, 1925, in Orange County, son of the late Robert and Elsie Wood Morris.
After graduating from Crozet High School in 1942, he fought throughout World War II in the Pacific with the U.S. Navy and then the Marines. He was wounded several times in the Battle of Iwo Jima. He continue his military career after the war, managing regional medical laboratories in several posts and retiring from the Army after twenty years of service.
He then began a business career as one of the founders of National Clinical Services Laboratories, Inc., one of the nations first automated and computerized commercial medical laboratories. Later, he raised cattle, corn, and soybeans as the owner of several farms near Scottsville.
He is survived by his wife, Sophie Morris of Earlysville; one son, Walton D. Morris Jr.; one daughter, Gwynndolynn R. Berkowitz, both of Charlottesville; five grandchildren; and his brothers, Robert Morris of Crozet, and Ronald Morris of Burlington, N.C.
The family wishes to express gratitude to Dr. Richard Stewart and his staff, especially nurse, Beth Fitzgerald, and to the Hospice of the Piedmont, especially Linnea Thackston and Aida Chambers, for their kind care and support.

Henry L. Shepherd
Henry Lewis Shepherd, 81, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., passed away on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002. He was a 38 year resident of North Palm Beach, Fla. and Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Henry was born Dec. 8, 1920, in Charlottesville. After graduation from Lane High School in 1938, he joined Trans World Airlines and flew with them until World War II. Henry then flew with Air Transport until enlisting in the United States Army in late 1943. He served with the 83rd Infantry Division in Europe from June 16, 1944 through April 12, 1945. He received Battle Stars for action in St. Lo, the Brittany Peninsula, St. Malo, the Loire Valley, Luxembourg, the Hurtgen Forest, Ardennes, Belgium, Roer River, Rhine River and was seriously wounded in 1945, near the Elbe River in Germany.
After being discharged in 1945, he returned to Charlottesville and later rejoined T.W.A.
In 1947, he met Hazel Bowers, and they were married
on January 8, 1949. Henry was transferred from Washington International Airport to New York in the early 1950s and resided in Glen Rock, N.J. until 1964, when he moved his family to North Palm Beach, Fla.
An avid golfer, Henry was a member of North Palm Beach Country Club for 31 years. He was active in the North Palm Beach Lions Club for two decades. He worked for Caters Furniture in North Palm Beach for 18 years and for La-Z-Boy for four years.
His wife, Hazel Bowers Shepherd, predeceased him in 1994.
Henry is survived by his son, Robert L. (Diane) Shepherd; one granddaughter, Brittany Lynn; his beloved companion, Ruth Gilligan of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; one brother, Robert C. (Joanne) Shepherd of Charlottesville; and one sister-in-law, Peggy King of Charlottesville.
Although Henry lived in Palm Beach County for 38 years, his love for Charlottesville never waned. He leaves behind many friends and loved ones in Virginia. (Go Cavaliers!)
Services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday evening at Price Funeral Home, located at 553 Northlake Boulevard, North Palm Beach, Fla. The family will receive friends at 4 p.m.
