Annie J. Sullivan

Annie Josephine Sullivan, 73, of Afton, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at her residence.

Born May 8, 1929, in Nelson County, she was the daughter of the late John and Ressie Carter Henderson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Ferguson; her daughter, Shirley Cash; two brothers, John and James Henderson; and her granddaughter, Lesia Clark.

Annie was a member of Rodes United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was a housekeeper and loved spending time with her family. She was a collector of cow figurines.

Survivors include her son, Michael Sullivan; her brother, Robert Henderson and his family; two grandchildren, David M. Cash and Anthony G. Clark; and her son-in-law, David E. Cash, all of Afton.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday evening at Reynolds Funeral Service, Waynesboro.

A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Rodes United Methodist Church by the Rev. Richard McDowell. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Dale Cook, Jim Willis, Jimmy Garwood, David Garwood, Ken Lee, and Buddy Dulaney.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of United Methodist Women.

Elsie S. Thompson

Elsie Stillwell Thompson, 89, of Louisa, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, in a Charlottesville nursing home.

Born Oct. 19, 1912, in Louisa County, she was the daughter of the late Cledus Hunter Stillwell Sr. and Pearly Diggs Stillwell.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bennie W. Thompson Sr.; her son, Bennie W. "B.W." Thompson Jr.; and four brothers, Paul, Eugene, James, and Russell Stillwell.

Mrs. Thompson was a member of Bybee Road Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, William H. Thompson and his wife, Mary K., of Louisa; two daughters, Shelby Thompson of Louisa and Norma Critzer and her husband, Michael, of Louisa; one brother, Cledus Hunter Stillwell Jr. of Upper Marlboro, Md.; two grandchildren, Tracey Brookman and Tammy Thompson; and three great-grandchildren, Hunter, Rebecca, and Sydney.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday evening at Sheridan Funeral Home, Kents Store.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Bybee Road Baptist Church, Troy, conducted by the Rev. Lowell Vaught. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bybee Road Baptist Church.

Robert M. Walters

Robert McClellan Walters, 82, formerly of Louisa, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at Glade Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Walkersville, Md.

He was the husband of the late Erika A. Walters, who died in March of 2000.

Born July 25, 1920, in Altoona, Pa., he was the son of the late William and Martha Robinson Walters.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ken Walters.

Mr. Walters was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy, where he was a member of the "Seabees" stationed in Alaska. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as an Art Director for major printing companies in the Washington, D.C. area, where he did work for world wide publications.

Mr. Walters was a contributor to the Humane Society. He enjoyed nature and the outdoors.

He is survived by two sons, Cliff Kushner and his wife, Mina, of Potomac, Md. and Gary Kushner and his wife, Helen, of Denver; six grandchildren, Patricia and Marco Kushner, and Erich, Bryan, Michael, and Elizabeth Kushner; and two brothers, William Walters of Williamsport, Md. and Charles Walters and his wife, Debbie, of Painesville, Ohio.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at Blue Ridge Shores Baptist Church, Louisa, with Pastor Don Reid officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: The Humane Society, 1301 Maugansville Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21704; or The American Cancer Society, 1037 Haven Rd., Hagerstown, Md. 21704; or Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1819, Frederick, Md. 21702.

Tucker Bishop

Tucker Bishop, son of Sara and Buz and brother of Erin, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, Sept. 20, 2002.

Tucker was born on May 12, 1984, in New York City and lived in Oxford, England and Fairfax County before moving to Charlottesville with his family in 1995.

While in Fairfax County, Tucker attended Waynewood Elementary School where he was elected class president and served in the Student Government. He also served as manager and assistant coach of the Wolverines youth soccer club. After moving to Charlottesville, Tucker attended Henley Middle School where he was elected to the Student Government and was an honor student with a perfect A average over all three years.

Tucker brought kindness, humor, grace, and a sense of wonder to everything he did in life, and everyone who got to know him came away a better person.

His family would like to thank all the individuals and organizations who contributed to, and shared, Tucker's extraordinary life, especially Hospice of the Piedmont, the Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center, the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Richmond and Western Virginia, the teachers and staff of Henley Middle School, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the San Jose Sharks, and the wonderful men and women of the National Ground Intelligence Center.

Those friends wishing to honor Tucker's life are asked to send contributions to the Tucker Rowan Bishop Charitable Foundation, P.O. Box 724077, Atlanta, Ga. 31139.

Phyllis Ann Bunch

Phyllis Ann Bunch, 63, of Covington, formerly of Culpeper County, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at Allegheny Regional Hospital.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at Preddy Funeral Home, 250 W. Main St., Orange.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon in National Memorial Park, Falls Church. The Rev. Charles Shifflett will officiate.

Gordon M. Butler Sr.

A funeral service for Gordon Marshall "Freight Train" Butler Sr. will be held at 1:30 p.m. this afternoon at Hill & Wood Chapel, with the Rev. Sidney Craig officiating. Interment icon will follow in the Bolton Family cemetery.

John H. Douglas

John Hampton Douglas, 59, of Charlottesville, formerly of Gordonsville, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at Trinity Mission of Charlottesville.

Born Nov. 20, 1942, in Albemarle County, he was the son of the late Linwood Douglas and Edna Madison Douglas.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James Douglas and Kenneth Douglas; and a brother-in-law, Edward Beasley.

He was a member of the Union Baptist Church in Gordonsville.

Mr. Douglas is survived by one son, Gregory Sims of Louisa; two brothers, Van Alexander Douglas of Gordonsville and Robert Douglas of Middleburg; five sisters, Susan Smith of Charlottesville, Lillian Cobbs of Louisa, Madeline Douglas and Frances Durant, both of Gordonsville, and Magnolia Beasley of Orange; one grandchild, Brianna Sims of Louisa, a daughter-in-law, Asia Nixon Sims of Gordonsville; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Gordonsville with interment in St. John Baptist Church cemetery, Cobham.

The family will receive friends at their homes.

Donald R. Hanson

Donald R. Hanson, beloved husband of Jane Miller Hanson, departed this life on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002.

Born Dec. 14, 1919, in Minneapolis, he was the son of Otto and Lisa Hanson. Donald lived there until the age of 9, when he and his family moved to Chicago.

Donald graduated from Purdue University with a degree in engineering and soon after joined the Army and served in both Europe and Japan with the Army Corps of Engineers.

In 1947, while attending a jazz lecture in Chicago, he met his future wife, Jane.

Jane and Donald shared both the love of jazz and travel. Donald's work for The Department of State and the United Nations took him and Jane to 88 different countries, where Donald used his engineering background in the design and building of low-income housing.

A gathering of friends and family will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday afternoon at The Colonnades Senior Living Community, 2600 Barracks Road.

Norwood H. Meyer

Norwood H. Meyer, 97, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at Westminster Canterbury Healthcare.

He was born April 23, 1905, in Detroit, and made Grosse Pointe, Mich. his home for the greater part of his life until he moved to Charlottesville in 1991.

He was a pharmacist and pharmaceutical chemist employed for 40 years by Parke, Davis & Co., now Pfizer. At the time of his retirement in 1967, he was Director of Sales Research and Development. He was responsible for the development of many pharmaceutical products.

He received degrees from Ohio State University and Harvard Business School.

During his business and retirement years, he was a member of a number of professional organizations, served on various civic and church committees, and was a member of Grosse Pointe Baptist Church. He and his wife, Helen, who died in 1987, were active in the affairs of Ohio State University, where he was a member of the College of Pharmacy Alumni Advisory Committee for over 25 years.

He is survived by his daughter, Christine S. Kennedy and her husband, the Rev. Dr. Thomas D. Kennedy; and his granddaughter, Christine E. Kennedy.

The family wishes to thank Dr. J. Devon Lowdon for his attention and support throughout Mr. Meyer's illness. Also, they would like to thank the staffs at The Colonnades Assisted Living, Westminster-Canterbury Healthcare, second floor, and The Hospice of the Piedmont, all for their compassionate care.

A memorial service for Mr. Meyer will be held at 1 p.m. this afternoon at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Massey officiating.

The interment service will be held in White Chapel cemetery, Troy, Mich., at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to the charity of your choice.

Dorothy Ada Orme

Dorothy Ada Orme, 82, of Howardsville, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, in a Charlottesville hospital.

Born Feb. 25, 1920, in Cumberland County, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Lola Durham.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Orme, on March 6, 2001.

She was a homemaker, a retired nurse's aid, and a member of Word of Faith Church in Charlottesville.

She is survived by a daughter, Carol A. Griffith of Mt. Laurel, N.J.; five sons, George A. Orme, William "Bill" Orme, and Wayne Orme, all of Howardsville, Gene C. Orme of Amherst, and Gary Orme of Troy; 19 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday morning at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel, Lovingston, with the Rev. Ilene Lehmann officiating. Interment icon will be in the Orme Family cemetery at Highland on the James at Howardsville.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Earl Lee Payne

A funeral service for Earl Lee Payne will be conducted at 2 p.m. this afternoon at Maple Grove Christian Church with Mr. Roger Browning officiating. Interment icon will follow in Maple Grove Christian Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. this afternoon at the church.

Teague Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth V. Persinger

A graveside funeral service for Ruth Virginia Persinger will be conducted at 11 a.m. this morning in Monticello Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at their residence.
