Georgia P. Powell
Georgia Pierce Powell, 68, of Esmont, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Emily Pierce; three brothers, Earl, Charles, and Lloyd Pierce; and one sister, Goldie Mae Abernathy.
Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Bernard L. Powell Sr.; one daughter, Kathy P. Allen and her husband, Robert W. Allen, of Scottsville; one son, B.L. Powell Jr. and his wife, Susan, of Esmont; one brother, James H. Pierce and his wife, Eunice, of North Carolina; two sisters, Louise Patterson of Scottsville and Beaulah J. Beran and her husband, Bennie, of Richmond; five grandchildren, Phillip R. Allen, Barry Powell, Kelly, Brian, and Stephen Cropp; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Powell was formerly employed by Frank IX for more than 40 years.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon in Scottsville cemetery with the Rev. James C. Jetton officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville.

Virginia Belle Prather
Virginia Belle Tanner Prather, 80, of Roanoke, was called home on Friday, Sept. 20, 2002.
She was born Aug. 2, 1922, in Twyman's Mill. Mrs. Prather was a member of Fairfax Methodist Church, Fairfax.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther A. Tanner Sr. and Sallie E. Knighting; her brother, Luther "Bud" A. Tanner; and her husband, Isaac Henry Prather.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Glenn E. Prather and Alice J. Prather; one daughter and son-in-law, Elaine P. Parisi and Stephen J. Parisi; four grandsons, Michael S. Parisi, Eric S. Prather, Brian K. Parisi, and Dexter A. Prather; one granddaughter, Alliseon Elaine Prather; one great-grandson, Devan Parker Browne; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Helen T. Estes, Hazel T. Mathias and James C. Mathias, and Leona T. Estes and Robert W. "Buck" Estes; and one sister-in-law, Vera W. Prather.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday evening at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel and before the service at the church on Friday.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon Friday at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Oak Park (Madison County), with her great-niece, the Rev. Melanie D. Franklin and the Rev. Bill Clayton officiating.
Burial will follow in Mt. Zion United Methodist Church cemetery.

Jim Price, 73, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Vivian Dell Turner
Vivian Dell Aldridge Turner, 67, of Scottsville, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at her home.
Born March 3, 1935, in Boone, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Robert and Minerva Townsend Aldridge.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Winford Turner.
She is survived by a daughter, Ginger Kohr of Scottsville; three sons, Christopher and Vincent Turner, both of Scottsville, and Scott Turner of Palmyra; five sisters, Erma Roberts and Juanita Mowbray, both of Scottsville, Dixie Fields of Mechanicsville, Udee Payne of Chesterfield, and Muriel Bellamy of Waynesboro; seven brothers, Edward, Hugh, Reed, and Bobby Aldridge, all of Scottsville, Billy and Tom Aldridge, both of Palmyra, and Allen Aldridge of Faber; and nine grandchildren, Abby, Jenna, Kit, Sam, Maxx, Brett, Skylar, Jordan, and Trip.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at Calvary Baptist Church, Route 15, New Canton.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday morning at Calvary Baptist Church. Interment
will be in the church cemetery. The Rev. Alan Daughtery will officiate.

Tucker Bishop
Tucker Bishop, son of Sara and Buz and brother of Erin, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, Sept. 20, 2002.
Tucker was born on May 12, 1984, in New York City and lived in Oxford, England and Fairfax County before moving to Charlottesville with his family in 1995.
While in Fairfax County, Tucker attended Waynewood Elementary School where he was elected class president and served in the Student Government. He also served as manager and assistant coach of the Wolverines youth soccer club. After moving to Charlottesville, Tucker attended Henley Middle School where he was elected to the Student Government and was an honor student with a perfect A average over all three years.
Tucker brought kindness, humor, grace, and a sense of wonder to everything he did in life, and everyone who got to know him came away a better person.
His family would like to thank all the individuals and organizations who contributed to, and shared, Tucker's extraordinary life, especially Hospice of the Piedmont, the Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center, the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Richmond and Western Virginia, the teachers and staff of Henley Middle School, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the San Jose Sharks, and the wonderful men and women of the National Ground Intelligence Center.

Mary C. Carter
Mary C. Carter, of Charlottesville, departed this life on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at her residence.
Born Dec. 8, 1939, in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of Catherine Robinson Crenshaw and the late James Crenshaw Sr.
She was married
to her beloved husband, Willis Carter Jr. for 40 years.
Mary was a graduate of Burley High School. She was an invaluable employee of the Charlottesville School System who provided 35 dedicated years of service. Her civic involvement included board member of the Preston Minor Scholarship Fund and a Band Booster member of Charlottesville High School.
Her commitment to Christ began at an early age. She was a lifelong active member of Union Run Baptist Church and served in many capacities: a former clerk of the church, Sunday School teacher, and chair of the finance committee.
Her devotion as mother, grandmother, and a faithful friend to all was remarkable. Most notable was her enduring faith and trust in God.
In addition to her mother and her husband, she leaves to cherish her memory three sons, Kevin Carter of Allison Park, Pa., Kendall Carter, and Keith Carter, both of Charlottesville; one devoted daughter-in-law, Dorothy Carter of Allison Park, Pa.; two grandchildren, Zachary Carter and Justin Carter, both of Allison Park, Pa.; one brother, James Crenshaw Jr. and his wife, Deborah, of Faber; two devoted sisters, Elizabeth C. Stovall and Pensacola Barbour, both of Charlottesville; two aunts, Alice Crenshaw of Long Island City, N.J. and Eleanor Robinson of Keswick; a mother-in-law, Laura Carter of Charlottesville; two brothers-in-law, Lorenzo Carter of Charlottesville and Curtis Carter of Fluvanna County; one sister-in-law, Corlis Douglas and her husband, George, of Charlottesville; a number of nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

John H. Douglas
John Hampton Douglas, 59, of Charlottesville, formerly of Gordonsville, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at Trinity Mission of Charlottesville.
Born Nov. 20, 1942, in Albemarle County, he was the son of the late Linwood Douglas and Edna Madison Douglas.
He was a member of the Union Baptist Church in Gordonsville.
Mr. Douglas is survived by one son, Gregory Sims of Louisa; two brothers, Van Alexander Douglas of Gordonsville and Robert Douglas of Middleburg; five sisters, Susan Smith of Charlottesville, Lillian Cobbs of Louisa, Madeline Douglas and Frances Durant both of Gordonsville, and Magnolia Beasley of Orange; one grandchild, Brianna Sims of Louisa; a daughter-in-law, Asia Nixon Sims of Gordonsville; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Gordonsville with interment in St. John Baptist Church cemetery, Cobham.

W. David East
W. David East, 62, of Copper Hill, passed away Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002.
A lifelong resident of Virginia, David was born in Patrick County. He served the Commonwealth and its residents in the Virginia State Police from 1963 to 1979, before becoming a home builder in the Floyd County area.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sonia; his parents, William and Lelia East of Patrick Springs; two daughters and sons-in-law, Allison and Geoff Simpson and Christy and Paul Macauley, all of Palmyra; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Kathleen East of Stephen City; and seven grandchildren, Erin, Ginny, and Jason Eller, Megan and Dane Macauley, all of Palmyra, and Nadia and Nicki East of Stephen City.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon at Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren, Willis, with the Rev. Roy U. Turpin officiating.

Daisy Early Gibson, 85, of Ruckersville, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002. Born Aug. 15, 1917, in Albemarle County, daughter of the late Charles Henry and Lizzie Sprouse Marshall.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Elwood James Gibson; one daughter, Gladys Virginia Thacker; one sister, Alma M. Tomlin; and four brothers, William, Lewis, Gordon, and Leonard Marshall.
She is survived by two sons, Charles Henry Gibson of Ruckersville, and Joseph M. Gibson and his wife, Phyllis, of Scottsville; two sisters, Ladys Graves of Charlottesville, and Hannah Gibson of Afton; one brother, George Marshall and his wife, Eleanor, of Charlottesville; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. this afternoon at Rock Spring United Methodist Church, Faber, with Pastor Dan Abbott officiating.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
