George W. Martin

George Winston Martin, 70, of Shipman, departed this life Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at his residence after a brief illness.

Born July 23, 1932, in Nelson County, he was a son of the late John Percy Martin Sr. and Jannie Hickman Martin of Shipman.

He was a Corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and served with the Military Police. He was a member of Bright Hope Baptist Church at Lovingston, was educated in Nelson County Public Schools and was employed early in life at Rucker Payne Supply Co., Lovingston. He later excepted employment at Elk Mountain at Afton for the Brady Family Estate where he worked for over 40 years.

George is survived by his wife, Claudine Knight Martin; his son, Terance Winston "Terry" Martin of Charlottesville; three sisters, Maggie Cox of Carrollton, Md., Ardell Mary Willis and Vera Briggs, both of Shipman; one sister-in-law, Bernice Martin of Shipman; three brothers-in-law, the Rev. William Webb of Arrington, Henry Willis of Clinton, Md., and Wayne Briggs of Shipman; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bright Hope Baptist Church, with the Rev. Horace Spears officiating. Interment icon will be in the Martin Family cemetery at Shipman.

Friends may call the funeral home anytime today and the family will receive friends at all times at the family residence.

The family will gather at 1:30 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home before going to the church.

Evelyn E. Minor

Evelyn Earnestine Minor, 81, of Louisa, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at her home.

She was born Feb. 4, 1921, in Louisburg, N.C., daughter of the late Jessie and Ester Williams Ruffin.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Marshal "Preacher" Minor, and a son, Jerry Minor.

Mrs. Minor was a member of Evergreen Bibleway Church and a retired nursing assistant at The Towers.

She is survived by two sons, George M. Minor of Louisa and Jeffery D. Minor of Augusta, Ga.; two daughters, Elsie M. Lassister of Hampton and Sylvia M. Robinson of Martinez, Ga.; one brother, James Ruffin of Rock Hill, S.C.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Evergreen Bibleway Church, conducted by Elder Steven A. Mason. Interment icon will follow in the Minor Family cemetery.

Sheridan Funeral Home, Kents Store, is in charge of arrangements.

Edith Schultz

A memorial service for Edith Schultz will be held at 2 p.m. today at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, with Pastor Rod Houppert officiating.

Hill & Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary B. Wingfield

A graveside service for Mary Evelyn Bingler Wingfield will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Riverview cemetery, with the Rev. Ricky Clatterbuck officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. Sunday at Teague Funeral Home.

Teague Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mabel C. Woods

Mabel Christine Woods, 90, of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, in a local nursing home.

Born July 13, 1912, in Orange County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Benjamin and Viola Dobbyns Herndon.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, George Merton Woods; two brothers; and one sister.

She is survived by one daughter Christine C. Moser of Bel Air, Md.; two sons, the Rev. George A. Woods of Covesville and Lt. Col. Charles E. Woods of Lewisville, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Ms. Woods retired after 43 years with The Salvation Army as an officer.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home in Decatur, Ga., with Commissioner Theodore Morris officiating. Interment icon will follow in Westview cemetery.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Covesville Baptist Church.

Teague Funeral Service is in charge of local arrangements.

Wilma May Deane

Wilma May (Dean) Deane, of Quinque, went home peacefully to be with her Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at her home with her family present.

Born Feb. 19, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert Lee Dean Sr. and Mary Ellen (Rogers) Dean.

She was previously a member of Cecil Mission Church.

Mrs. Deane was baptized on Aug. 4, 1998, in a private service, along with her two sons and two grandchildren, officiated by her son-in-law, Pastor Malcolm H. Powell, and a family friend, Pastor Wendell Lamb.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Lois Carol Dean; a sister, Anna Lee (Dean) Roach; and two half-brothers, Gilbert Lee Dean Jr. and Homer Thomas Dean (the sons of Gilbert Lee Dean Sr. and Hattie Virginia (Collier) Dean).

Those left behind to mourn her absence and to cherish her memory are her beloved husband, Bennie F. Deane Sr.; three daughters, Mary Francis Powell and her husband, Malcolm, of Quinque, Janice Lorraine Powell and her husband, Roger, and Darthy Ann Gardner and her husband, Leland, all of Glendale, Md.; two sons, Bennie Frank Deane Jr. and his wife, Carolyn, of Dyke, and Larry Elliott Deane, of Earlysville; one son-in-law, Theodore Algernon Dean of Quinque; three sisters, Lelia Rae Bickers of Stanardsville, Chellie Hazel Bruce of Elkton, and Neva Rachel Comer of Elkton; two half-brothers, Clifton Warfield Dean and Solomon Cohill Dean, both of Charlottesville (the sons of Gilbert Lee Dean Sr. and Hattie Virginia (Collier) Dean); nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law and very dear friend, Margaret Deane, of Quinque; several close cousins; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Her life was greatly enriched by the love for and from her family, her spirit of giving, and her strong spirituality.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Bible Baptist Church, Route 33, Stanardsville, with Pastor James Woods officiating. Interment icon will be in Holly Memorial Gardens, Route 29, Charlottesville.

The deceased will await services in a private home. Those wishing a viewing are invited to arrive at First Bible Baptist Church one hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Suite 200, Charlottesville, Va. 22911.

Phyllis T. Hawkins

The family of Phyllis Taylor Hawkins will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Teague Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Teague Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Hunter officiating. Interment icon will be private.

Lydia P. Layne

Lydia P. Layne, 68, of Charlottesville, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2002, at her residence.

Funeral services for Ruben Miller will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel, Orange, with Pastor John Hodgen officiating. Interment icon will be in Graham cemetery.

Kenneth W. Shifflett

Kenneth Wayne Shifflett, 43, of Arlington, passed away at his home.

Born Aug. 5, 1959, he was the son of the late Elmer Owen Shifflett.

He is survived by his mother, Bernice Morris Wood of Fredericksburg; his stepfather, William Lee Wood of Alexandria; two sisters, Lois Jean Roske and her husband, Marlan, of Dale City, and Wendy Padgett of Stafford; five brothers, Owen Steve Shifflett and his wife, Sally, of Kingstown, William Lee Wood and his wife, Debbie, of Alexandria, Gary Lee Wood and his wife, Kathy, of Dale City, Randy Bidden and his wife, Renee, of Fredericksburg, and Jerry Michael Wood and his wife, Susan, of Dale City; a number of grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; one great-niece; and one great-nephew.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Ryan Funeral Home, Quinque.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Evergreen Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. C.C. Kurtz officiating. Interment icon will be in the church cemetery.

Ruby B. Shifflett

Funeral services for Ruby Elizabeth Breeden Shifflett will be held at 11 a.m. today at Fairview Christian Church, with Dr. Tommy Palmer officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.

Alma R. Wilkerson

Alma Ragland Wilkerson, 94, of Schuyler, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Wilkerson; her parents, Albert and Sarah Ragland; two children, Helen and Wallace; two brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors include three children, Katherine Via and her husband, Ikey, of Schuyler, Claudine Banton and her husband, Willie, of Williamsburg, and Calvin Wilkerson and his wife, Dale, of North Carolina; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two nieces.

Mrs. Wilkerson was a member of Schuyler Pentecostal Holiness Church.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville.

Interment will follow in Woodland United Methodist Church cemetery, Buckingham.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mary B. Wingfield

Mary Evelyn Bingler Wingfield, 98, of Hampton, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, in a Hampton hospital.

Born Nov. 11, 1904, in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of the late Luther Herman and Lillie Ray Bingler. She was the wife of the late Roy Lee Wingfield.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Thelma L. Ochsenfeld; one son, Arthur Lee Wingfield; one grandchild, Charlese Breeden; three sisters; and three brothers.

She was a member of First Christian Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Frances Wingfield Staton of Hampton; four grandchildren, Evelyn Smith, Nancy Trinkle, Susan Saunders, and Keith Staton; nine great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Riverview cemetery, with the Rev. Ricky Clatterbuck officiating.

One grandson and five great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. Sunday at Teague Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Born Again Chapel, 743-B Mountainwood Road, Charlottesville, Va. 22903.
