James Joseph Polaro
James Joseph Polaro, 72, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at his home.
Born in Green Island, N.Y., he was the son of the late Joseph James and Helen Brennan Polaro.
He served in the United States Navy and was a retired Security Guard.
Survivors include his wife, Faith J. Polaro; his children, Catherine J. Polaro, Cynthia L. Polaro, Joseph James Polaro and Carolyn a. Polaro all of Charlottesville; two sisters, Janet Plowman and Rose Wattendorf both of Troy, N.Y.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. today at Holly Memorial Gardens with Father Joseph Torretto officiating.

Herbert Rickards
Herbert H. Rickards, 91, of Culpeper, formerly of Gordonsville, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at the Culpeper Health Care Center.
Born May 8, 1911, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late John W. and Estella E. Rickards. His wife was the late Nellie Leona Durham Rickards. He was also preceded in death by one granddaughter, Teresa Bell.
Mr. Rickards was a retired conductor for the railroad and was also retired from Jeanes Hospital in Foxchase, Pa.
Survivors include, one daughter, Carol R. Bell and her husband, Bob of Florida; two sisters, Ruth Armstrong and Kathy Inacker, both of Philadelphia; one grandson, Robert Bell of Philadelphia; two nieces, Betty Thompson of Somerset and Nancy Morris and her husband, Jimmy of Orange; and one great-nephew, Tracey Thompson of Somerset.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Funeral services for William Lee Rollins will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Preddy Funeral Chapel in Orange, with interment in Madison Memorial Gardens, Pratts. The Rev. Wayne Goff will officiate.
Ruby B. Shifflett
Ruby Elizabeth Breeden Shifflett, 88, of Hood, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at Evergreene Nursing Care Center in Stanardsville.
Born Jan. 10, 1914, in Madison, She was the daughter of the late James Breeden and Blanche Berry Breeden; and wife of the late, Homer L. Shifflett.
Mrs. Shifflett was a member of Fairview Christian Church at Hood and retired from Cooper Industries in Earlysville.
She is survived by a son, William H. Shifflett and his wife, Mary Catherine of Hood; a daughter-in-law, Mary B. Shifflett of Hood; two grandchildren, H. Ross Shifflett Jr. and his wife, Mary L., Ronnie L. Shifflett and his wife, Wina; three great-grandchildren, Jeffrey R. Shifflett, Daniel P. Shifflett and Melinda K. Shifflett, all of Pratts; three special friends, Margaret Weakley, Carolyn Taylor and April Betz.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by a son, Hugh R. Shifflett Sr.; five sisters, Edna Breeden, Sally Brown, Ruth Jackson, Kate Shifflett and Florine Nicholson; two brothers, Robert Breeden and James E. Breeden.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Shifflett, James Jackson, David Smith, Kenneth Smith, Jeff Shifflett, Bobby Jackson, Ross Shifflett and Gene Breeden.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Fairview Christian Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Dr. Tommy Palmer will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel, Madison.

Rebecca Sprouse
Rebecca "Becky" Garrison Sprouse, 44, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at her home.
Once in a while someone special comes along in life whose smile and laughter brightens up whichever corner of the world they happen to be standing in. Such was the life of Becky Sprouse. A cherished wife, loving mother, daughter, sister and a caring friend. Becky loved her family, a good book, a good movie and the outdoors.
Her laughter and wit will be missed by all whose lives she touched. Her testimony of the unconditional grace and love of the Lord Jesus Christ will go on, though her physical presence is not here with us. Her joy of life and her laughter will be missed by all. We will miss you "Pooky, " but we know that heaven is a little bit brighter of a place with you being there. We love you.
Born Oct. 23, 1958, in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of James "Billy" Garrison Jr., Mildred Wood Garrison.
She was a graduate of Albemarle High School; James Madison University with a bachelor's of science in education; a member of First Baptist Church and was the office manager for Piedmont Forms and Graphics.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Sandy D. Sprouse Jr., two daughters, Melissa May Sprouse and Stacey Marie Sprouse and a stepson, Douglas Sprouse all of Charlottesville; two sisters, Regina Garrison Ingram and her husband, David, of Mt. Crawford; and Martha Garrison Mack and her husband, R.D., of Earlysville; a niece, Amanda Leigh Ingram; father and mother-in-law, Doug and Virginia Sprouse of Charlottesville; a brother-in-law, Karl Sprouse and his wife, Tammy, and their children of Palmyra; and a host of friends.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church with Dr. Joel P. Jenkins and Roger Browning officiating. The burial will be private.
The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Florence Williams
Florence Ethel Williams Jordan, 57, of Blenheim, departed this life on Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
She was born in Hartford Connecticut on Jan. 27, 1945, the daughter of the late Roy and Eva Mae Williams. She was the widow of Junius L. Jordan Sr.
Florence was a graduate of Jackson P. Burley High School. She was a member of Middle Oak Baptist Church where she was active as President of the Usher Board, former Sunday School Teacher, Vice President of the Missionary Ministry and Assistant Church Clerk.
She leaves to cherish her memory four sons, Junius L. Jordan Jr. and his fiancée, Ella Carey, Clarence A. Jordan and his wife, Tina, Jerome E. Jordan and his wife, Tammi all of Charlottesville, and Paul. L. Jordan and his wife, Teresa of Louisa; one daughter, April L. Jordan and her friend, William C. Rush of Charlottesville; seven brothers, Earle Williams, Donald Williams and his wife, Hilda, Paul "Teddy" Williams, Vincent Case, Walter Williams and his wife, Miranda, Geoffrey Williams, Allen Williams, Paul Williams, and Lawrence Williams and his wife, Dianna; two sisters, Roselyn Miles, and Maria Elaine Case; ten grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Middle Oak Baptist Church, Blenheim with the Rev. Patricia Whindleton officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.

Charles B. Arnold
Charles B. Arnold, 41, of Charlottesville, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, in a local hospital.
Born March 27, 1961, in Laurens, S.C., he was the son of Patricia Dudley Arnold and the late Jake D. Arnold.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his brother, Sam Arnold and his wife, Carla and numerous other family members and friends.
He was a self-employed gardener who loved flowers and gardening.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Teague Chapel with Pastor Jim Taylor officiating.

A memorial service for Lt. Colonel Arthur Joseph Dulac will be held at 11 a.m. today from the Shepherd of the Hills Catholic Church in Quinque, of which he was a member. The Rev. Dan Bain will officiate. Interment

Edna V. Gibson
Edna Vernell Gibson, 72, of Columbia, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Linda Davis.
Born Nov. 10, 1930, in Spotsylvania she was the daughter of the late Granville and Edna Wingfield Dickinson.
She was a 1949, graduate of Lane High School and a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and Rivanna Baptist Church.
Surviving is her loving husband of 53 years, Carl L. Gibson; her loving children, Linda G Davis and her husband, Charles of Charlottesville, Debra G. Dellinger and her husband, Steve of Troy, and Carla Agosti and her husband, Steve of Zephryhills, Florida; three loving sisters, Earline D. Shifflett of Charlottesville, Alease D. Powley and her husband, William of Free Union, Genevieve D. Jennings and her husband, Wayne of Palmyra, five loving grandchildren, Charles M. Davis, Jr. and his wife, Lori, Christopher M. Davis and his wife, Lisa, Bryan Dellinger, Jeremy Delinger and Matthew D. Agosti; and three loving great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the home of Linda Davis.

Preston E. Hall
Preston Elmo "Buck" Hall, 79, of Orange, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at his residence.
He was born May 29, 1923, in Orange. Mr. Hall was a retired carpenter. He was the son of the late Robert Nelson and Edna Branham Hall.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Margaret Rheinlander, Margaret Roses, and Gertrude Fincham Hall; a son, Robert Preston Jones; and a sister, Arlene Jones.
Mr. Hall is survived by one daughter, Phyllis Ledford and her husband, Dan of Glen Allen; and three grandchildren, Jeffrey Ledford, Danielle Perdue, and Tammy Eppard.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Preddy Funeral Home in Orange.

Shelby J. Lilly
Shelby J. Lilly, 55, of Troy, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at her home.
She was born Sept. 20, 1947, in Charlottesville, daughter of the late Calvin and Elizabeth Graves.
She was a graduate of Lane High School, a member of the Women of the Moose, Elks Lodge and a member of Colonial Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Lewis Edward Lilly of Troy; her children, Calvin Matthew Batten of Troy, Edward Lilly and his wife, Brenda, of North Garden, Dennis Lilly and his wife, Connie, of Charlottesville, and Dennis Scott Lilly II of Troy; two brothers, Ronnie Belew and his wife, Glenda, and Jimmy Jarrell; her great uncle, Nobel G. Gray of Charlottesville; and dear friends Vernon and Debra Wood of Troy.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Hill & Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ed Leake officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview cemetery.

Laura Gough Maupin
Laura Gough Maupin, 94, of Culpeper, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at the Louisa Health Care Center.
She was born June 3, 1908, in Charlottesville, daughter of the late Robert Gough and the late Catherine Bussinger Gough.
She served in the U.S. Army as a dietician from 1943 to 1945, worked in Oliver General Hospital in Augusta, Ga., was active in Culpeper United Methodist Church and owned and operated Maupin's Grocery with her late husband, Glenwood, and her late brother-in-law, Malcolm, in Charlottesville.
She is survived by one sister, Rebecca Gough of Stanardsville, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Katie Breeden, Emma Clements, Mable Simpson and Marie King Tesh, and four brothers, Bernard, Linwood, James and Robert Gough.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Clore-English Funeral Home, Culpeper. Burial will be in Holly Memorial Gardens, Charlottesville. The Rev. Marvin C. Cook will officiate.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
