James Joseph Polaro

James Joseph Polaro, 72, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at his home.

Born in Green Island, N.Y., he was the son of the late Joseph James and Helen Brennan Polaro.

He served in the United States Navy and was a retired Security Guard.

Survivors include his wife, Faith J. Polaro; his children, Catherine J. Polaro, Cynthia L. Polaro, Joseph James Polaro and Carolyn a. Polaro all of Charlottesville; two sisters, Janet Plowman and Rose Wattendorf both of Troy, N.Y.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Holly Memorial Gardens with Father Joseph Torretto officiating.

The family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Hill & Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William Lee Rollins

Funeral services for William Lee Rollins will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Preddy Funeral Chapel in Orange, with interment in Madison Memorial Gardens, Pratts. The Rev. Wayne Goff will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Edith Schultz

Edith Schultz, 89, of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at Westminster Canterbury.

Born March 12, 1913, in Hoboken, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Samuel Walter and Margaret Jane Space Carson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harry V. Schultz.

Survivors include a daughter, Edna Lower and her husband, Ronald of Middleburgh, N.Y.; a son, Henry V Schultz and his wife, Irene of San Juan Bautista, Calif.; her twin sister, Edna Sheridan of Charlottesville; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a niece, Edith Champ and her husband, Antony of White Hall; two nephews, Jerry Sheridan and Paul Sheridan and his wife, Catherine all of Connecticut.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church with pastor Rod Houppert officiating.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church 2416 Jefferson Park Ave. Charlottesville Va. 22903 or a favorite charity.

Hill & Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ruby B. Shifflett

Ruby Breeden Shifflett, 88, of Hood, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at the Evergreene Nursing Home in Stanardsville.

Arrangements with Preddy Funeral Home, Madison, are incomplete.

Rebecca Sprouse

Rebecca "Becky" Garrison Sprouse, 44, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at her home.

Once in a while someone special comes along in life whose smile and laughter brightens up whichever corner of the world they happen to be standing in. Such was the life of Becky Sprouse. A cherished wife, loving mother, daughter, sister and a caring friend. Becky loved her family, a good book, a good movie and the outdoors.

Her laughter and wit will be missed by all whose lives she touched. Her testimony of the unconditional grace and love of the Lord Jesus Christ will go on, though her physical presence is not here with us. Her joy of life and her laughter will be missed by all. We will miss you "Pooky, " but we know that heaven is a little bit brighter of a place with you being there. We love you.

Born October 23, 1958, in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of James "Billy" Garrison Jr., Mildred Wood Garrison.

She was a graduate of Albemarle High School; James Madison University with a BS in education; a member of First Baptist Church and was the office manager for Piedmont Forms and Graphic's.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Sandy D. Sprouse Jr., two daughters, Melissa May Sprouse and Stacey Marie Sprouse and a step son, Douglas Sprouse all of Charlottesville; two sisters, Regina Garrison Ingram and her husband David of Mt. Crawford; and Martha Garrison Mack and her husband R.D. of Earlysville; niece, Amanda Leigh Ingram; Father and mother-in-law, Doug and Virginia Sprouse of Charlottesville; a brother-in-law, Karl Sprouse and his wife Tammy and their children of Palmyra; and a host of friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Joel P. Jenkins and Mr. Roger Browning officiating. The burial will be private.

The family will receive friends following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Charlottesville Pregnancy Center 320 W. Main Street Charlottesville, Va. 22903.

Dorothy S. Tourgee

Dorothy Slaven Tourgee, 86, a resident of Oak Lea in Harrisonburg, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002.

A daughter of the late Bruce and Lottie Nieswander Slaven, she was born May 21, 1916, in Harrisonburg where she lived her entire life. She graduated from Madison College with a B.S. Degree.

Mrs. Tourgee was a secretary at Rockingham National Bank and worked in the library at James Madison University until her retirement in 1981. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church including the Mizpah Bible Class, Circle No. 1 and sang in the Chancel Choir for 50 years. Mrs. Tourgee was a former member of the Harrisonburg Womans Club and a charter member of Rockingham Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary.

On Jan. 18, 1941, she married Louis L. Tourgee Jr. who preceded her in death on May 31, 1998.

Surviving are two daughters, Ann Walker of Waynesboro and Sara T. Murray and her husband, Rich of Charlottesville; one son, Louis L. Tourgee III of Glen Allen; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Jean S. Wood of Kingsville, Md.

Her body will be cremated at the Lindsey Cremation Chapel in Harrisonburg. Private interment will be in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. L. Douglas Hill and the Rev. James M. John officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Asbury U. M. Church, 205 South Main St. Harrisonburg, Va. 22801, in her memory.

Arthur Joseph Dulac

Lt. Colonel Arthur Joseph Dulac, 81, of Barboursville, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Born Dec. 7, 1920, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Arthur Dulac and Elizabeth Irvin Dulac.

He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and the federal government.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Bragg Dulac of Barboursville; one daughter, Allyson Dulac of Miami; son-in-law, Rawley Guerrero of Miami; and two brothers, George Dulac and wife, Betty, and Conrad Dulac, all of Palmyra.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ashley Dulac.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the Shepherd of the Hills Catholic Church in Quinque, of which he was a member. The Rev. Dan Bain will officiate. Interment icon will be at Quantico National cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel 250 W. Main St., Orange.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ashley Dulac Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Mary Baldwin College, Staunton, Va. 24401.

Carroll E. Fitzgerald

Carroll Edward Fitzgerald, 82, of Shipman, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at his residence.

Born Jan. 16, 1920, in Shipman, he was a son of the late Percy Fitzgerald and Edna Wood Fitzgerald.

He was a retired mechanic with the Virginia Department of Highways, Amherst Division, with more than 42 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Florine, on Oct. 14, 1998, and two brothers, Peyton T. Fitzgerald and Graham R. Fitzgerald.

He is survived by his sister, Ruby F. Thompson of Shipman; two stepdaughters, Doris C. Gibson of Stuarts Draft and Helen C. Graves of Sanford, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Davis cemetery, Shipman, with the Rev. Robert Massie and the Rev. Peyton Fitzgerald Jr. officiating.

Friends may call anytime today at the funeral home.

Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel, Lovingston, is in charge of arrangements.

Shelby J. Lilly

A funeral service for Shelby J. Lilly will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Hill & Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ed Leake officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.

Dorothy Plum Marston

Dorothy May "Granny" Plum Marston, 67, of Charlottesville, passed away Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center, after a brave battle with a sudden illness.

She was born Oct. 28, 1935, in Albemarle County, daughter of the late Thomas Birkhead and Pearl Shiflette Birkhead.

She was married to the late Donald E. Marston for 3 years and the late Thomas H. Plum for 14 years.

Granny, as she was known to all, is survived by one daughter, Patricia Plum Wilson and her husband, Charles, of Charlottesville; two grandsons, Michael B. Plum of Big Stone Gap and Damon N. Lamb of Charlottesville; two great-granddaughters, Kaitlyn Orum and Victoria Rose Bourne, of Charlottesville; five very special nieces and nephews, Joyce May Morris and her husband, James, of Earlysville, Aubrey Morris of Earlysville, Richard Morris and his wife, Ellen, of Harrisonburg, Larry Morris and his wife, Bonnie, of Charlottesville and Steve Morris and his wife, Ann, of Scottsville.

She was preceded in death by one infant son; one brother, Thomas "Boots" Birkhead; and one sister, Lorraine Morris.

The family wishes a special thanks to Dr. M. Mauermann of the University of Virginia Medical Center, and staff of 3 Central; Dr. Ramirez and staff of Micu; Dr. Jonathan Lindner; Dr. Sharon Esau; Dr. Janet Lewis and Dr. Slingluff.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Charlottesville.

James Bernard Miller

James Bernard Miller, 85, passed away Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at Trinity Mission Health and Rehab Center in Charlottesville.

He was born July 21, 1917, at Montpelier Station, the son of the late Daniel and Viola Garton Miller.

He retired in 1978 as a locomotive engineer after 36 years of service with the Pennsylvania Penn Central and Conrail Railroad. He was an honorary life member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers (BLE) and a life member of Harmony Lodge No. 3 (AF & AM) in Smyrna, Del. He also was a member and past governor of Charlottesville Lodge No. 1028 of the Loyal Order of Moose since 1972 and held the Pilgrim Degree of Merit, the highest degree of the order, since 1993. Mr. Miller served in the Army from 1935 to 1941, and was discharged as a corporal of Battery B, First Coast Artillery.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Miller was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille Tirrell Miller of Charlottesville; one son, James Douglas Miller of Smyrna, Del.; one stepson, James R. Tirrell of Grayson, Ga.; two stepdaughters, Faye L. Branham of Charlottesville and Ruth T. Greene of Moneta, and their spouses; six step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; special sister-in-law, Margaret Morris; three nieces, Adell Wood of Charlottesville, Martha Moubray of Barboursville and Laura Thacker of Aroda; and one nephew, Clarence Hall of Jacksonville, Fla.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hill & Wood Chapel, with the Rev. Greg Compton of Mechanicsville Baptist Church officiating. Interment icon will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.

Virginia Fruit Norford

Virginia Fruit Norford, 84, of Dayton, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg.

She was born March 28, 1918, in Buckingham, a daughter of the late Rev. Robert L. Fruit and Alice America Gwyn Fruit.

She graduated from high school in Gladys and attended Strayer Business College in Washington, D.C. She worked for Farm Security Bureau and the Virginia Conference orphanage, now known as Virginia Social Services. She spent most of her adult life in Arlington and worked with the Arlington County Government.

Mrs. Norford was a member of Dayton United Methodist Church. She had been active in the Methodist church all her life, was a leader in the Methodist Women and was a volunteer at Bridgewater Retirement Community. She was a founding member of the Dayton Neighborhood Watch, and had served on committees for the Dayton Town Council.

She was united in marriage March 17, 1945, to Marshall Albert Norford Jr., who died Dec. 27, 1975.

She is survived by one son, Lee A Norford and his wife, Lavenia "Lev", of Bridgewater; one daughter, Dana N. Fenner and husband, John, of Pittsburgh; four grandchildren, Aaron Wesley Norford of Bridgewater, Thomas Marshall Norford of Harrisonburg, Jonathan Marshall Fenner and Christine Alexandra Fenner, both of Pittsburgh.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Dayton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rudy L. Smith and Dr. James L. Mahaffey officiating. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Johnson Funeral Chapel in Bridgewater.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Dayton united Methodist Women's Scholarship Fund at Dayton United Methodist Church, 215 Ashby St., Dayton, Va. 22821.
