Carl Thomas Tilman
Carl Thomas Tilman, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at his home.
Carl was the son of the late Floyd Walsh and Howard Tilman. His mother died when he was two and he and his father moved to the Woolen Mill area to live with his grandmother and his two Aunts Allie and Mae Tilman who raised him.
Carl attended the Linden Woolen Mill School, then Clarke Elementary and graduated from McIntire High School, where he lettered four years in baseball.
His first job was working at Riverview cemetery at age 15. He later took on the job of janitor and song leader at the Woolen Mill Chapel for $5.00 per month. In the early 40's he organized a string band called, The Blue Ridge Ramblers. Playing for square Dances and Radio Programs for WCHV Radio.
Carl worked for Holsinger's Studio for 31 years as photographer and Darkroom Tech. Then in 1963, he was employed for 26 years by John F. Marshall, Jr. at Charlottesville Office Machine Company. He was a Deacon at First Baptist Church, a choir member, Soloist and song leader. He was the first Director of Music at Jefferson Park Baptist Church, a Deacon and charter member.
He met his first wife, Dorothy Eades Tilman when they were 13 years old. They married
at 18 years of age and had been married
33 years at the time of her death in 1973. He remarried
in 1974, to Betty Jones Tilman and they had been married
25 years at the time of her death.
He leaves two children, Carl Stephen Tilman and Debra Elaine Tilman Dillon and her husband, Bill; A granddaughter, Carly M. Dillon; a stepdaughter, Cheryl Jones Nash and her husband, Barry; two step-grandchildren, Joel Nash and Cari Nash; and a dear friend, Rusty.
The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Joel P. Jenkins and Rev. Donald A. Givens officiating. Interment
will follow at Riverview cemetery.

Judith A. Wayland
Judith A. Wayland, 66, died Saturday Nov. 23, 2002, at her home with family by her side.
Born Judy A. Henry on March 14, 1936, in Scotia. She was a graduate of Scotia-Glenville High School, the daughter of Francis and Geraldine Henry.
Judy received her teaching certificate from Oneonta State Teachers College and later marrying Robert A. Wayland, also of Scotia, N.Y. Judy had lived in Glenville, N.Y., Erie, Pa., and Charlottesville, where she raised her family. She worked in real estate as an agent employed by Real Estate III, Charlottesville. Moving back to Erie, Pa., she lived at Deerfield farm, North East, Pa., and attended church at St. Matthias in French Creek, N.Y.
Judy was most proud of her accomplishments as a devoted parent and loving wife.
Survivors include, her husband, Robert F. Wayland; four sons, William F. Wayland and his wife, Lorraine of Erie, Pa., Daniel J. Wayland and his wife, Kelly of Cary, N.C., James M. Wayland of Seattle, Wash., and Joseph R. Wayland and his wife, Lisa of Charlottesville; her sister, Maureen Henry of Pittsburgh, Pa.; nine grandchildren, Zachary, Elizabeth, John, Paul, Benjamin, Samuel, Marie, Patrick, and Claire; several nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, of Donald and Lynn Wayland of Scotia, N.Y., and Richard and Gail Wayland of Galaway, N.Y.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph's Church, 236 First Street, Scotla. A calling hour will precede the mass from 8 to 9 a.m. at the church. Interment
will be at Most Holy Redeemer cemetery in Niskayuna, N.Y.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Great Lakes Hospice in care of the funeral home.

Ella East Brown
Ella East Brown, 85, of Gordonsville, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
She was born Nov. 13, 1917, in Orange County, the daughter of the late Willie R. and Susie Shepherd East.
She was retired from food preparation service and was a curator for Castle Hill in Gordonsville.
She is survived by her husband, Delma H. Brown of Gordonsville; two sisters Mrs. Lutfiyyah Muhammand of Decatur, Ga., and Mrs. Margaret East Ware of Orange; and a brother, Spurgeon East of Williamsport, Pa.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Emanuel Baptist Church, Orange. The Rev. Tommie Vailey will deliver the Eulogy and the Rev. Frank D. Lewis Sr. will officiate. Interment
will be in Westview cemetery, Orange.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Emanuel Baptist Church.

Williamson T. Hough
Williamson Thomas "Bill" Hough, 80, passed away peacefully Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at his home with his family.
Bill was born Nov. 1, 1922, in Marshall, Mo., and grew up in Lawrence, Kan.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanne, of Keswick; their two sons, Chip and his wife, Jonna, of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Chris of Herndon; and five grandchildren, Hunter, Heather, Parker, Leif and Hayden.
Bill served four years in World War II as a first lieutenant combat infantry leader in Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of Berlin. He was decorated with two Purple Hearts with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Bronze Star, and received a battlefield promotion and other honors.
Bill earned his bachelor of business administration degree at the University of Kansas. In 1948, he received a Masters of Business Administration in petroleum economics from the University of Kansas.
Bill was a successful entrepreneur in Corpus Christi, Texas, in the manufacturing and distribution of industrial products and services in the petrochemical refining industries. He was the owner of Gilman Insulation Co. (later Basic Industries of South Texas), Corpus Christi Gasket & Fastener Co., Fluid Sealing Products of Houston, Corpus Christi Equipment Co., and partner in Distribution International of Corpus Christi.
He was a member of Rotary International for over 40 years and a Paul Harris Fellow, past president of South Texas Lighthouse for the Blind and a Red Cross county chapter, established a federally approved county blood bank. Bill was active and instrumental in Texas schools, teaching the free enterprise system in the high school curriculum. Bill served on the boards of directors for many trade associations including, the National Insulation Contractors Association and South West Insulation Contractors Association.
He was a member of Glenmore Country Club in Keswick, former member of the Corpus Christi Country Club, and director of the Corpus Christi Town Club. He was also active in the Church of the Good Shepherd of Corpus Christi and of Christ Church Episcopal, Charlottesville.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Christ Church Episcopal, 120 W. High St., Charlottesville, Va. Interment
will be at Arlington National cemetery and will be announced at a later date.
The family of Bill Hough wishes to thank Dr. Robert Pritchard, Dr. William Hammond, and all of the nurses and staff of the Oncology Center at Martha Jefferson Hospital.
He fought cancer as he lived his life, with passion, with dignity, with honor, with generosity and without complaint.

Katherine J.Thalmann
Katherine J. Thalmann, 81, passed away Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002.
Katherine, an avid gardener, was a charter member of the Sacagawea Garden Club, a member of the Doe Club, Key West, and Senior Center Investment Clubs, a homemaker, and an interior designer. Above all she was proudest of her children and grandchildren.
Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, Wilhelmina and John Julichs; a devoted husband, George Edward Thalmann; a sister, Helen Schuck; a brother, John Julichs; and a grandson, Robert Edward Joseph.
Cherishing their memories and family are a son, William George Thalmann and his daughter, Alyssa Marie Thalmann; Michelle Hupp; Katherine E. Thalmann of Falls Church; a daughter, Kathie Thalmann Joseph and her husband, Richard Cary Joseph Sr., and their son, Richard Cary Joseph Jr., all of Charlottesville; and a host of devoted friends that she considered family.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at Hill & Wood Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Our Saviour, Rio Road, with the Rev. Harold Hallock officiating.

Mae Katherine Cole
Mae Katherine Cole, 81, of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at a local nursing home.
Born Feb. 20, 1921, in Lexington, she was the daughter of the late David and Mary Bain Kinkaid. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward H. Cole; a grandson, David S. Cole II; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Cole; sisters, Hallie Hall, Aileen Jarvis, Virginia Nolan and Faye Mabry.
She is survived by her children, Rebecca Hampson and her husband, Robert, of Richardson, Texas; David S. Cole and his wife, Judith; Roy S. Cole and his wife, Sheila, all of Charlottesville; two sisters, Chris Eakin of Williamsburg and Betty McCellan of Towson, Md.; nine grandchildren, Tracey L. Cole, Jennifer Cole-Johnson, Amanda C. Woods; Emily C. Hampson, Elizabeth B. Hampson, Jessica A. Kerns, Edward Hudson Cole, Tyler K. Cole and Travis W. Cole; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Samuel Massey officiating. Interment
will be private.

Gladys P. Cowherd
Gladys Alma Payne Cowherd, 98, of Birmingham, Ala., formerly of Gordonsville, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, in a Health Care Center in Birmingham Ala.
She was born Feb. 10, 1904, in Louisa County and was a daughter of the late Winfrey Claudius Payne and Dora Lee Riner Payne. Mrs. Cowherd was married
to the late George Tyler Cowherd Jr.
She was a member of the Gordonsville Baptist Church, Gordonsville Historic Society and was very active in helping the Gordonsville Vol. Fire Company and the Gordonsville Lions Club.
Mrs. Cowherd is survived by two daughters, Ginny Lee Downer Williams of Denver, Colo., and Nancy Carroll Downer Sherwood and her husband, Otto of Gordonsville; one son, Reuben Brawner Downer Jr. and his wife, Lois of Birmingham, Ala.; nine grandchildren, Payne Williams Heselton and Mike Downer Williams, both of Denver Colo., Henry Carl Wyatt of Charlotte, N.C., John O. Wyatt of Chicago, Angela Ruth Williams of Aberdeen, N.C., Daniel G. Wyatt of Stanardsville, Richard Lee Downer of Atlanta, Ga., Robert E. Downer and Carolyn Liston both of Birmingham, Ala.; and sixteen great-grandchildren, Michael Hopkins, Cody Heselton, Genevieve Heselton, Joseph Downer, Lee Downer, Sarah Downer, Noah Downer, Peter Downer, Phillip Downer, Thomas Liston, Daniel Liston, Joey Liston, Lauren Williams, Kristen Williams, Erin Williams and Glenn Williams.
She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Reuben Brawner Downer; her brother, Edward Minor Payne; and two sisters, Reva Jane Johnson and Viola P. Hawthorne.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Gordonsville Baptist Church with interment in Maplewood cemetery. Pastor Carmon Hartsfield and The Rev. Glenn Plott will officiate.

Inis Lamb Detamore
Inis Lamb Detamore, 78, of Stanardsville, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at Evergreene Nursing Care Center.
She was born June 6, 1924, in Greene County, a daughter of the late Emory M. and Mary Edith Shifflett Lamb. Her husband was the late Loyd Detamore. She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jessica D. Knighton.
She is survived by two daughters, Alice McDaniel and Barbara Conely and her husband, Thomas, all of Ruckersville; two sons, Loyd Detamore Jr. and his wife Lillian, and Bruce Detamore and his wife, Debbie, all of Ruckersville; nine grandchildren, Edison Detamore, Tommy Conely, Kenny Conely, Emily Detamore, Earl Detamore, Bertha Mae Detamore, Jason Gibson, Beth Ann Shifflett and Brian Detamore; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Viola Snow, Gloria Gibson and Janice Wood of Charlottesville; and five brothers, Homer Lamb, Winfred Lamb, Dewey Lamb of Charlottesville, Marvin Lamb of Stanardsville, and Ennis Lamb.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ryan Funeral Chapel in Quinque, with interment in Holly Memorial Gardens. Pastor Dawn Lare will officiate.

Frances B. Hicks
Frances B. Hicks, 66, of Chester, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas M. Hicks Sr.; sons, Thomas M. Hicks Jr. and his wife, Laura, and Jerry Michael Hicks and his wife, Nita; a sister, Nancy Barley Jackson; a grandson, Thomas M. Hicks III; and four step-grandchildren.
