Ione D. Vivian Faro
Ione Dorothy Vivian Faro, 100, died peacefully Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at Martha Jefferson House in Charlottesville.
She had lived a remarkably active, productive and noteworthy life. Born in Sheffield, England in 1902, she attended the University of Sheffield, from which she received a Bachelors degree in mathematics and in 1925, a Masters degree in Pure and Applied Mathematics and Physics. She emigrated to Canada, and then to the United States prior to World War II. Shortly after the onset of the war, she was naturalized as a U.S. citizen. Nonie then went from teaching high school mathematics at the Rowland Hall School for Girls in Salt Lake City, Utah, to training military officers in advanced calculus at William and Mary College in Virginia.
In the early 1940s, her mathematical prowess had become obvious and she moved to Silver Spring, Maryland to join a secret project team developing the VT (velocity/timed) or radio proximity fuse. Through her statistical abilities, she provided the analyses of effectiveness of this device. The use of this fuse in the Battle of the Bulge was recognized as a crucial factor in turning back the German attack, as well as in the success of many battles in the Pacific. In 1944, she began working for the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. After the war, she was on several teams formed to develop supersonic missiles. She participated in the development of the first Mach 10 (10 X the speed of sound) wind tunnel. This was critical to the design and development of future generations of missiles and rockets. As a consequence of the wind tunnel work, she was recognized as a pioneer and expert in hypersonic aerodynamics. She later edited a series of volumes, the Aerodynamics Handbooks.
Her final role prior to retirement was with a small group which defined a new unnamed missile in its infancy. This later evolved into the Tomahawk missile of Desert Storm fame. After her retirement in 1972, she and her beloved husband, Edward Faro, traveled frequently until his death in 1985. Thereafter, she remained active in affairs of the Anglican Church, knitted, solved cryptograms in ink and corresponded extensively with her many friends around the world.
Nonie is survived by her daughter, Marion Nolan of Charlottesville; a granddaughter, Tiphanie Clarke; a great granddaughter, Ione Alexandra Clarke of Thame, U.K; and a grandson, Stanton P. Nolan Jr. of Crofton, Md.
