Georgia S. Vance

Georgia Shank Vance, 94, a resident of Short Glade Farm, Mt. Solon, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at Bridgewater Retirement Home. She had been in failing health for the past six months.

A daughter of the late Charles D. and Lula Layman Shank, Georgia was born on July 29, 1908, in Harrisonburg, and graduated from Hood College. Mrs. Vance was an Army Officers Wife while rearing her children. She was an early objector to the Viet Nam War.

In the 1060's she began a career in floral design, becoming the country's foremost authority on dried flowers. For more than 35 years her magnificent arrangements decorated the Diplomatic Reception Rooms at the U.S. Department of State and many historic homes. In 1973 her book, The Decorative Art of Dried Flower Arrangement, received the Helen S. Hull Award for Literary Horticultural Interest from The National Council of State Garden Clubs. Georgia lectured nationally and conducted workshops at her farm.

Among her many awards are the American Horticultural society 1990 Frances Jones Poetker Award, The Garden Club of America 1995 Katharine Thomas Carey Medal and Hood College Distinguished Alumna of the Year Award for 1999.

Mrs. Vance was a member of the Garden Club of Virginia, The Garden Club of America, The Garden Club of Alexandria and The Officer's Wives Garden Club of Ft. Belvoir.

On Oct. 7, 1935, she married James Davis Vance Sr., who preceded her in death on Jan. 24, 1974. Her sister, Lurena Mae Shank, also preceded her in death.

Surviving are two sons, James D. Vance Jr. of Hoboken, N.J., and J. Peter Vance of Richmond; two grandchildren, Jennifer Vance Crew and James Douglas Vance both of Richmond; one great-grandson, Matthew Crew; and a brother Charles Daniel Shank Jr. of Mt. Solon.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Woodbine cemetery in Harrisonburg. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Please, no flowers. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Common Wealth Fund of the Garden Club of Virginia, 23219 or to the Valley Conservation Council, P.O. Box 2335, Staunton, Va. 24402.

Ethel Nell Burns

Ethel Nell Burns, 80, of Scottsville, died Saturday Nov. 16, 2002, in a local hospital.

Born in Washington, DC on April 8, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Nell and Mamie Anderson Nell. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Thomas Camp and John Burns.

Mrs. Burns was a member of Church of Christ and served at the church camp for many years and became known as "Momma Camp". Mrs. Burns was a proud volunteer for the Martha Jefferson Hospital.

She is survived by her loving daughter Deborah Camp and son Michael Camp; one sister, Edwerta Hughes; grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Church of Christ, 1525 Rugby Avenue with Larry MacComber officiating. Interment icon will follow in Oakwood cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Teague Funeral Home.

Daniel Evan Coffey

Daniel Evan Coffey, 71, of Barboursville, died Sunday, Nov.17, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Born April 13, 1931, in Welsh W.Va., he was the son of the late Daniel A. Coffey and the late Belle Boyd Coffey. He was also preceded in death by one grandson, Daniel Evan "Danny" Coffey III. He was a greeter at Wal-Mart in Charlottesville.

Mr. Coffey is survived by his wife, Virgie Coffey; two daughters, Ellen Yvonne Colvin and her husband, Ricky of Barboursville, Nancy Ann Smith and her husband, Randy of Clayton, N.C.; two sons, Daniel Evan Coffey Jr. and his wife, Linda of Charlottesville, and David Edwin Coffey; three sisters, Hazel Maxwell of Johnson City, Tenn., Marie Jackson of South Carolina, and Effie Beeman of Stafford; eight grandchildren, Billy and Christopher Coffey of Charlottesville, Lee, Lance, Lyn, and Terra Colvin all of Barboursville, Daphne Coffey and Bobby Hunt of Clayton, S.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Ashley Coffey and Kimberly Colvin.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel 250 West Main Street, Orange. The Rev. Bill Templeton will officiate.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the; Coffey Family Fund, 10343 Willhoits Mill Rd., Barboursville, Va. 22923.

Jane H. Fitzhugh

A graveside service for Jane Booton Herndon Fitzhugh will be held at 11 a.m. today in Holly Memorial Gardens, with Vicar Gary Barker officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Jane's home (the Fitzhugh Cottage, Willow Lane, Stanardsville).

Ryan Funeral Home, Quinque, is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia C. Freeman

Virginia Cobb Freeman, 93, of Alberine, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at Martha Jefferson Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robbie W. Freeman; a son, Paul Franklin Freeman; her parents, Joseph and Eulah Kirby Cobb; two brothers Joe and Percy Cobb; two sisters, Helen Thomas and Margaret Marshall; and one great-granddaughter, Ashley Amanda Martin.

She is survived by five children, Bernice Spencer of Charlottesville, Ann Spencer of Alberine, Fletcher Freeman and his wife, Margie of Batesville, Phyllis Maupin and her husband, Ben Jr. of Alberine and Mary Rhodes of Alberine; one sister, Dorothy Marsh and her husband, Joe of Charlottesville; a special grandson she raised as her own, Chris Martin of Greene; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Freeman was a member of Alberine Baptist Church, Alberine, where a funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday with the Rev. Jeff Cale and the Rev. Rick Sadler officiating. Interment icon will follow in Alberine cemetery.

Viewing will be at the church one hour before the funeral.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Scottsville Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 33, Scottsville, Va. 24590.

Thomas M. Goodwin II

Thomas Martin Goodwin II, 68, of New Bern, N.C. died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at his residence.

He is survived by his wife, June S. Goodwin, of the home; one son, Alan Scott Goodwin of New Bern, N.C.; one daughter, Sara Goodwin Hatley of Richmond; and four grandchildren, Logan and Brandon Goodwin, and Sierra and Samuel Hatley.

A Memorial Service will be held in Elkins, West Virginia on Saturday at the Lohr Barb Vance Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Craven County Home Health Hospice Agency, P.O. Drawer 12610, New Bern, N.C. 28561.

Margaret K. Haley

Margaret Keller Haley, formerly of Front Royal, died peacefully Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at a local nursing home in Charlottesville, after a lengthy illness.

She was born Oct. 6, 1915, in Winchester, and was the only child of George and Rosa Keller. She graduated from John Handley High School and worked for National Fruit Company as an administrative assistant. In 1951, she married Albin O. Haley, a widower and Front Royal postmaster, and lived in Front Royal until 1993, when she moved to Charlottesville to be closer to family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Haley, in 1981. They had no children, but her memory will be cherished by her step-daughter-in-law, Rita Robertson Haley Woltz, and her step-grandchildren, E. Clarke Haley, Jr. of Charlottesville, Timothy F. Haley of Northfield, Ill., Lynn Woltz Bernard of Virginia Beach, Rita Robertson Woltz of Norfolk, and Sarah Kyle Woltz of Richmond, and their families.

The family wishes to express its gratitude to the staff of Our Lady of Peace, Dr. James Knight, Hospice of the Piedmont, and Mary Lee Swift of Albemarle County Social Services.

Interment will be at Prospect Hill cemetery in Front Royal.

For many years, in cooperation with WFTR radio in Front Royal and the local SPCA, Margaret operated a free lost-and-found service for lost pets. For that reason, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the local SPCA of the donor's choice.

Thelma A. Love

Thelma Arlene Love, 85, of Ruckersville, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at her home.

Arrangements with Hill & Wood Funeral Home are incomplete.

Charles E. Moran Jr.

Charles Edward "Chic" Moran Jr., 89, died early Sunday Nov. 17, 2002, at Martha Jefferson Hospital.

Born Feb. 17, 1913, to Katharine Fontaine and Charles Edward Moran Sr., in Charlottesville, he was the eldest of their four children. He received his Bachelor's degree in Political Science and his Master's degree in History from the University of Virginia. He performed long and valuable service to the University as Director of the Printing Office, then as Oral History Officer until his retirement.

He married Fermine Waddill Colvin in 1949, and had two children, Charles Edmond Catchings Moran and Virginia Anne Kimber Moran. He also has three grandchildren, Eileen Colvin Cating-Moran, Francis Julian Moran Lantry and Edward Baird Moran Lantry, all of Charlottesville and Albemarle County.

Chic co-founded the Charlottesville Friends Meeting and was an active member throughout his life. He served as a conscientious objector in World War II and worked with the American Friends Service Committee in Poland and France to help rebuild Europe after the War.

He played seven instruments, was active in the square dancing and country dancing societies locally, and sang a beautiful baritone.

He loved his parents, his brothers Fontaine and Kimber, his sister Katharine, his wife, children and grandchildren, his larger family, the many wonderful people whose lives touched his, Friends Meeting, the University of Virginia, Albemarle County and the state of Virginia. He was a man of peace, honor and integrity.

A memorial service will be held at the University Chapel at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Donations in his honor may be made to Charlottesville Friends Meeting or to the Hospice of the Piedmont.

Frances P. Parsons

Frances Price Parsons, 83, of Crozet, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at her residence.

She was born Jan. 26, 1919, in Patten, Maine, to the late Frank Price and Grace Richmond Price.

She is survived by her husband, William B. Parsons; one son, Bryan D. Parsons of Crozet; and two brothers, John K. Price of Kissimmee, Fla., and James Clinton Price of Old Saybrook, Conn.

She and her husband were married March 9, 1946, in the Philippines. Both were serving in the armed forces during World War II. She was a supervising nurse in the Arlington County Health Department and a veteran of World War II as an Army nurse.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel.

There will be a memorial service at University Baptist Church and a graveside service at Culpeper National cemetery at a later date.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the University Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 1223 W. Main St., Charlottesville, Va. 22903.

Miriam Miller Reed

Miriam Miller Reed, 77, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at a local hospital.

Born Nov. 24, 1924, in Wyoming, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Earl Hampton and Marquerite O. Oehlschlaeger Miller.

She is survived by her husband, George S. Reed of Charlottesville; four daughters, Marcy Reed Segarra of Ludlow, Ma., Robin K. Reed of Princeton, N.J., Amy H. Reed of Alexandria, and Melissa R. Bomberger also of Alexandria; two grandsons, Richard and Stephen Bomberger.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Presbyterian Church with Rev. John Hall officiating. Interment icon will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens.

Christine H. Rucker

A funeral service for Christine H. Rucker will be held at 1 p.m. today at Bethany Baptist Church, with the Rev. Stanley Holmes officiating. Interment icon will be in the family cemetery.

Jean M. Smith

Jean M. Smith, 83 of Keswick died at home on Monday, Nov. 18, 2002.

She leaves two daughters, Carol Stalzer and Janet Cheeseman both of Keswick.

Mrs. Smith was a member of Holy Comforter Catholic Church, Charlottesville, Virginia. Jean was retired from Dorr Oliver Corp., Stamford, Connecticut as an administrative assistant. Mrs. Smith was active in the Senior Center in Charlottesville.

Funeral services will be private.

Donations may be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont 1490 Pantops Mtn. Place Charlottesville, Va. 22911.
