Lois Swink Petcavage

Lois Swink Petcavage, 73, of Charlottesville died Monday Nov. 11, 2002, in a local health care facility.

Born in Austin, MN on Nov. 6, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Clarence Swink and Ruth Olson Swink.

Ms. Petcavage was a graduate of Winchester Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1957. She served the health care industry for many years and many positions, most recently serving the Outpatient Oncology Unit at the University of Virginia Medical Center since 1981. She was a member of the Cherry Avenue Christian Church where she was an active Choir Member.

She also was a member of the Oncology Nurses Society, a charter member of the National I.V. Association. She served on the Nurses Sub-Committee for Professional Education for the State of Virginia from 1977-1979, Chairman of the American Cancer Society, 1977-1979, served on the American Cancer Society Local Unit Board member in 1979, ONS Annual Congress, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1984 and the American Cancer Society Conference 1977 and 1987.

She is survived by her daughter, First Lt. Ann Petcavage, USAF of Albuquerque, N.M.; one son, Paul Petcavage of Lake Ridge; two sisters, Pat Larkin and her husband Gus of Albuquerque, N.M., Mary Petrin and her husband John of Hatteras Island, N.C.; one niece, Patti Larkin of Albuquerque, N.M.; one nephew, Nick Petrin of Hatteras Island, N.C.; and her best friend Joanne Sprouse of Charlottesville.

A funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday at Cherry Avenue Christian Church with Mr. Harv Ayers and Mr. Stan Martin officiating. Interment icon will be private.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday at the church, prior to the service.

Teague Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

G. William Seay

G. William Seay, 89, of Davis Creek Community, Lovingston, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at the Lovingston Health Care Center.

Born at Davis Creek on Jan. 5, 1913, he was a son of the late Willie Daniel Seay and Sue Fortune Seay.

He was a self-employed farmer all his life and a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rolene Harris Seay; two sons, William "Billy" Seay of Lovingston, and Grady G. Seay of Charlottesville; four grandchildren, Lesley, William, Clay and Katie; and one sister, Nita S. Davidson of Charlottesville.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Laura Martin.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Oak Hill Baptist Church near Lovingston, with the Rev. Pete Russell officiating with interment in the Oak Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends following the interment in the Social Hall of the church where dinner will be served.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and suggest that memorials take the form of donations in honor of William to the Nelson County Rescue Squad at Faber, Va. 22938 or Oak Hill Baptist Church, 248 Davis Creek Lane, Lovingston, Va. 22949.

Pallbearers will be David Davidson, Russell Lee Evans, Doug Harvey, Wayne Fortune, John Bittinger and Bill Thomas.

Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel of Lovingston, is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys S. Sparks

A graveside funeral service for Gladys Seale Sparks will be held at 2 p.m. today at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Oak Park, with Pastor Stanley Borders officiating.

Margaret Sutherland

Margaret Mae Coles Sutherland, 84, of Charlotte, N.C., died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, in Spartanburg, N.C.

She was born Nov. 12, 1917, in Albemarle, a daughter of the late Thomas Issac Coles and Maggie Mae Coles.

Mazie was a graduate of Scottsville High School and attended the UVa. School of Nursing, and was married in 1940, to the late Ben Clarke Sutherland. She was assistant nurse and secretary to Dr. Charles Hensley while living in Asheville N.C. She lived in Charlotte, N.C. where she worked until retirement for Presbyterian Hospital as an O.R. Technician. She was a volunteer upon retirement for an elderly home and during the last few years, began work again at Willow Ridge Assisted Living Facility.

Mazie was a very caring and loving mother who always gave of herself to others unselfishly.

She is survived by her brother, Henry C. Coles of Charlottesville; a sister, Ruby Coles Martin of Panama City, Fla.; her twin daughters, Marleen Sutherland Howard and Sharleen Sutherland Reese; three grandchildren, Sharon McMillen, Jim Reese, and Vara Reese, all of Charlotte, N.C.

A memorial service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Sharon Seventh Day Adventist Church, Charlotte, N.C.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel, Bedford, with the family receiving friends one hour prior to the service.

Burial will follow in Greenwood cemetery, Bedford.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Sharon Seventh Day Adventist Church, 920 North Sharon Amity R., Charlotte, N.C. 28211.

Carder-Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory, Bedford, is in charge of arrangements.

Jacqueline Williams

Jacqueline M. Williams, 72, of Orange, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

She was the daughter of the late Edward Lee. And Liona Bell Marsh. Mrs. Williams was a retired Knitter with Liberty Fabrics and a member of the New Hope Baptist Church, Gordonsville.

Survivors include her husband, Carl Hunter "Tom" Williams of Orange; two daughters, Carolyn Jean Snow of Orange and Glenda Darlene Clore of Madison; one son, Larry Franklin "Moe" Wilson of Orange; three step-children, Steve Moubray, Debbie Rowlen, and Melisa Sprouse; two sisters; Kathleen Miller of Virginia Beach, and Billie Brown of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; seven grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two cats, Max and Sassy.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Orange with interment in Maplewood cemetery, Gordonsville. Pastor Roy Giles and Pastor Miles VanSkike will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Orange.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the New Hope Baptist Church of Gordonsville, P.O. Box 360 Lakeview Parkway, Locust Grove, Va. 22508 or the Orange County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 446, Orange, Va. 22960.

Sandra Ellen Tyler

Sandra Ellen Brown Tyler, 53, of Brightwood, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Born Oct. 16, 1949, in Remington, she was the daughter of the late Lafayette Harrison Brown and Peggy Virginia Kennedy Brown, and wife of the late Louis Claude Tyler.

She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn T. Ball and her husband, Mitchell of Rochelle, Donna T. Jenkins and her husband, Greg of Wolftown; two sons, Keith Tyler and his wife, Alicia, and Claude "Bubby" Tyler all of Brightwood; three brothers, Sonny Brown of Culpeper, Kenneth Brown of Culpeper, and Ricky Brown of Warrenton; four sisters, Margie Jenkins of Warrenton, Elizabeth McPeak of Culpeper, Mary Rakes of Leon, Patsy Cook of Culpeper; nine grandchildren, Ashley N. Jenkins, Jessica L. Jenkins, Gregory B. Jenkins Jr., Amanda L. Ball, Mitchell "Louie" Ball, Claude "C.E." Ball, Joshua Ball, Keith "K.H." Tyler Jr., Kaleigh Tyler, Brianna Tyler; and sisters-in-law, Janet Hoffman and Husband Bobby of Haywood and Carol T. Jones of Culpeper.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Madison with interment in Mt. Carmel Baptist Church cemetery. The Rev. Brian Wagner will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Louise Payne Yowell

Louise Payne Yowell, 90, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at the Martha Jefferson House.

Born August 15, 1912, in Albemarle County, she was the daughter of the late James B. and Ida Mawyer Payne. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Butler Yowell.

She was a charter member of Charlottesville Lioness Club; attended First United Methodist Church for many years, where she was active in the Sunday School Program, The Nursery and Circle No. 8 of the United Methodist Women; and was retired from Miller & Rhodes as a sales clerk and supervisor.

Survivors include a son, J. B. Yowell, Jr., and his wife Susan of Alexandria; a sister, Velma P. Norvelle and her husband A.W. of Charlottesville; three grandchildren, Tyler, Ellen and Kevin Yowell.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Carlton officiating. Interment icon will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Edna C. Arrington

Edna Carlean Hicks Arrington, 76, of Louisa, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002.

She was a homemaker and the daughter of the late Joseph and Jennie Howard Hicks.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas W. Arrington; sons, Charles Lee Dixon, of Fairfax, Harry Lemmuel Dixon, of Bowling Green; daughters, Jennie Dianthia Courtney, of Fredericksburg, Judy Lynn Owens, of Lorton, Anette Marie Martin, of Louisa, and Robin Lee Summerfield, of Louisa; William Hicks, of Lorton, Charles Hicks, of Manassas, and Clinton Hicks, of Woodbridge; sisters, Doris L. Henry, of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Betty Holt of Louisa; sixteen grandchildren, and thre great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by four children, Michael Lewis Dixon, Deborah Anne Sheets, Samuel W. Arrington, and Ginger Anne Dilly.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Woodward Funeral Home, Louisa.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Frank Hall officiating. Interment icon will be at noon Wednesday in Stafford Memorial Park, Stafford.

Ethel Mae Booker

Funeral services for Ethel Mae Booker will be at 1 p.m. today at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Interment icon will be in the church cemetery. The Rev. Rippert Roberts will officiate.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Lewis Dolen Burner

A memorial service for Lewis Dolen Burner will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel, Gordonsville, conducted by Mike Dudley.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. today before the memorial service.

Ethel Floyd Castle

Ethel Floyd Castle, 86, of Charlottesville, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at her home.

Yerby Pannill Colom

Yerby Pannill Colom, 87, of Alexandria and Charlottesville, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002.

Mrs. Colom was born Jan. 9, 1915, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of the late Joseph Blackwell Pannill and Edna Carlin Pannill.

In her youth, Mrs. Colom was a distinguished Shakespearean actress, who received rave reviews and was privileged to perform for President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Following her marriage to the late Jose Luis Colom, the Director of Agriculture for the Organization of American States, she devoted her life to family and to helping advance the mission of her husband's technical and diplomatic career. She was considered a great beauty, whose picture often appeared in the society columns of Washington, D.C. papers.

Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Colom worked for the city of Alexandria as its Building Code Compliance Officer. She retired, after 25 years of service, in 1989. During that period, she was also active in the Little Theater of Alexandria as a technical and artistic consultant.

Mrs. Colom was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, and sister, who was loved by everyone whose lives she touched with her kindness and grace. The overriding joy of her life was her daughters, whom she loved dearly and considered her greatest blessings. She will be remembered by them with profound love and gratitude for her many sacrifices and unselfish love throughout their lives.

Mrs. Colom is survived by her daughters, Maria C. Huebner of Charlottesville, Ines C. Ragland of Mechanicsville, and Cristina C. Miles of Franklin, Tenn.; two sons-in-law, Carl R. Huebner and John Miles; five grandchildren, Lisa M. Hill, B. Scott Hill, Rachael Ragland, Michelle R. Haney, and Anthony C. Edens; one niece, Marion P. Morel; one grandnephew, John Morel; one cousin, Nancy Munsey; and many beloved great-grandchildren, cousins, and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Pauls episcopal Church, Ivy, with the Rev. Miller Hunter officiating.
