Theodosia B. Zazakos
With her beloved husband of 60 years at her side, Theodosia Charlotte Brush "Theda" Zazakos passed from out sight and into the light of God, Wednesday Nov. 6, 2002, after a 12 year valiantly-waged battle with cancer. She died peacefully in their home.
A native Virginian, she relocated to Staten Island, N.Y., in 1940, where she met her husband-to-be, Chris Zazakos. After a one year engagement, the couple married
in Hattiesburg, Miss., where Mr. Zazakos was stationed prior to his mobilization to the Pacific theater. During their 35 months of separation, she supported the war effort at a power drill operator – and unsung feminist – building PT boats in a New Jersey naval shipyard.
Settling in Staten Island after the war, Mrs. Zazakos concentrated her energies toward her family as a devoted wife, loving mother and homemaker. After the retirement of Mr. Zazakos in 1979, they relocated to Virginia to be near their grandchildren.
She enjoyed simple pleasures: dinners with family; music ("Moon River, " "You are my Sunshine" and "Red Roses for a Blue Lady"); her parakeet "Peppy"; long walks with her husband, Chris; red roses; yoga(before it was fashionable); drawing and pottery.
Sleep permitted her to transcend the infirmities of age and disease, fulfilling her lifelong dreams of dancing. In slumber, she was Odette- her feet never touching the floor – soaring to the strains of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake.
As reported in the Progress, Theda and Chris celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family and friends on August 3, 2002, with renewal of their wedding vows.
She is survived by her husband, Chris; a son, Chris Jr. and his wife, Connie Zazakos, all of Charlottesville; three grandchildren, Melissa Zazakos and Ellie Zazakos, of Charlottesville, and Christopher Zazakos, of Richmond; two sisters, Hazel Cangelosi, of Florida, and Dorothy George, of Staten Island, N.Y.; two brothers, Robert Brush, of Oklahoma, and Ashton Brush, of Florida; a devoted former daughter-in-law, Cynthia Zazakos, of Charlottesville; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Brush, and Morris Glenwood Brush; a sister, Catherine Brush; her father, Morris Brush; and her mother, Margaret Wilson Brush.
The Zazakos family wishes to extend a special appreciation to the members of Mrs. Zazakos' health care team, the efforts of which permitted her good quality life throughout her lengthy illness; Martha Jefferson Hospital South five and South seven nursing staff; MJH Interventional Radiology staff and physicians; Drs. Pong Punyanitya, William Tompkins and Susan Miesfeldt; Carol Wilson, RN and other nursing and PT/OT staff of MJH home care; Albemarle County Rescue Squad and the staff of Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge.
A special note of gratitude is extended to Dr. Christina DeVincentis for her wonderful caring attitude, patience and superb medical judgement.
