Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Joyce Anne Ross

Joyce Anne Ross, 55, of Orange, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Born August 5, 1947, in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of the late Harrison Nixon and the late Marie Dade.

She was a member of the Zion Baptist Church and a certified nursing asst. at the Country Side Rest Home in Boswell taverns.

She is survived by two daughters, Deborah Vaughan, of Charlottesville, and Sherry Johnson, of Orange; one son, Early Daniel Johnson Jr., of Orange; four brothers, Wilmer Dade, of Orange, Thomas Dade, of Charlottesville, St. Clair Dade, of Gordonsville, Harrison Nixon Jr, of Silver Springs, Md.; eleven sisters, Selena Hamlin, of Orange, Ivy Beasley, of Rhoadesville, Margo Lewis, of Barboursville, Antherine Hopkins, of Orange, Rosa Nixon, of Alexandria, Rebecca Proctor, of Waldorf Md., Virginia Tate, Regina Nixon, Marian Cowherd, Shirley Winkley, and Betty Ann Nixon, all of Gordonsville; eleven grandchildren; two guardians, Marvin Eugene Smith Jr., and Christopher Lamont Smith; and dedicated friend, Roger Blakely.

She was preceded in death by one son, Darryl Lamont Carter, one daughter Kimberly Denise Johnson, and one brother, Hollis Dade.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Preddy Funeral Home, Orange.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the little Zion Baptist Church, Orange, with interment to follow in the Westview cemetery, orange. The Rev. Marion Wilkerson will officiate.

Preddy Funeral Home, Orange, is in charge of arrangements.

Aurthur R. Ta'Bois

Aurthur Ronald "Tabby" Ta'Bois, 98, died Sunday Nov. 3, 2002.

He was born January 13, 1905, in Woodford Green, Essex, England, a son of the late Mabel Frances Crankshaw and Frederick William Ta'Bois.

In addition to his parents Mr. Ta'Bois was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Alexander Ta'bois; his brothers, Frederick, Lawrence, Adrian, and Noel Ta'Bois.

"Tabby" is survived by a nephew, Peter F. W. Ta'Bois of Gramsby, England, and two nieces Paula Kwan, of Boston, and Carol Alexander of Atascadero, Calif.

"Tabby" came to the United States in 1929, and began work in New York City. He moved to Cambridge, Mass., in 1932, to begin his career as a manager of the news office at Harvard University, a position held until his retirement in 1970.

He moved to Charlottesville in 1981, to be near his friends, Jim and Rosalind Hingeley, and their family.

"Tabby" was a master gardener and enjoyed classical music.

Edith Falwell Ward

Edith Falwell Ward, 80, of Charlottesville, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at her home.

Edith was the daughter of the late Charles P. Falwell and Rose B. Falwell of Alberene. She was born into a family of four brothers and two sisters.

She was preceded in death by both of her parents and her brothers, Lionel, Wadell, George and Berkely.

She is survived by her sisters, Marian Kelly and Louise M. Earl.

Marriage for 48 years to Rhodes William Ward Sr., Edith devoted her life to her family. Together they raised two children, Bonnie Ward Fitzgerald, of Charlottesville and Rhodes William Ward Jr., of Greene County.

Edith survived her husband by fourteen years and lived to enjoy the birth and marriage of three grandsons; one granddaughter; the births of four great-grandsons; and two great-granddaughters. In addition to her daughter and son, she is survived by; her granddaughter, Rebecca Fitzgerald Waters; her grandsons Jeffrey Ward, M. Todd Ward, and Christopher Ward, and their families.

Always a loving person, it was no surprise that Edith chose a profession that allowed her to care for others. A devoted nurse, she retired from the University of Virginia Hospital in 1983 after 20 years of service. Edith cared for everyone who came into contact with her, always going the extra mile in everything she did.

Edith Ward was a loving mother, grandmother, and wife. She will be missed by all those who knew her.

We ask that you hold her in your prayers as she always held us in hers. God bless.

The family will receive friends 7:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Teague Funeral Home.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery, Free Union, with Dr. Thomas Leland officiating.

John L. Weissinger

John L. Weissinger, 65, of Portsmouth, R.I., died Sunday Nov. 3, 2002, at Newport Hospital, Newport, R.I.

He leaves his wife of 37 years, Claudette (Arsenault) Weissinger.

Born in Glen Allen, Miss., on Dec. 13, 1936, he was the son of the late Harry McElroy and Ethel (Powers) Weissinger.

Mr Weissinger graduated from Cary High School, Mississippi, in 1955. He attended Millsap College in Jackson, Miss., graduating in 1959, with a degree in geology. He was a graduate ot the University of Mississippi and received a degree in oceanography and geology.

He then joined the United States Navy for the following five years, and then joined the Navy Reserves for 20 years.

Mr. Weissinger was an Oceanographer for NUSC for 35 years, Retiring in 2000. While working at NUSC, he traveled extensivelyto Artic Ice Cap. Mr. Weissinger taught oceanography in the evening at Brown University.

Mr. Weissinger was a member of the Portsmouth Historical Society and Save the Bay. He was a member of the Portsmouth Economic Development Committee. Hw was a member ot the Pheasant Hill Association for 30 years, served as its president, and was involved in organizing Pleasant Hill Day.

He wa a member and past president of the Newport Ski Club, and a long time active member at Saint Philomena's Fair. He was an avid gardener, bridge player, and a nature lover.

Besides his wife, Mr. Weissinger leaves behind two sons, Clark A. Weissinger, or Trinidad-Tobago, and Cary H. Weissinger, of Bristol, R.I.; three brothers, Charles H. Weissinger, of Cary, Miss., Spencer Weissinger, of Charlottesville, and Thomas R. Weissinger, Annapolis, Md.; and one sister Clare Hoover, of Bethesda, Md.

He was also the brother of the late Harry McElroy Weissinger.

A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth.

Burial will be in Portsmouth cemetery in Portsmouth.

Memorial donations may be made to Save the Bay 434 Smith Street Providence, R.I. 02908, or to the Norman Bird Sanctuary, 583 Third Beach Road, Middletown, R.I. 02842.

Clarence H. Williams

Clarence Howard Williams, 71, of Stony Point, died peacefully, Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at Trinity Missions Nursing Home.

He was born June 30, 1930, in Greene County, son of the late Walter Clyde and Verda Williams.

Clarence lived most of his life in Stony Point and was known for his skills in carpentry and stone and brick masonry.

He spent his last years on a local farm surrounded by the wildlife he enjoyed watching and feeding with his faithful companion, "Tom", his cat.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Preddy's Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Betty Norford will officiate.

Tom Chicon

Tom "Tattwan" Cichon left his body Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, leaving behind a multitude of family and friends to celebrate his life and mourn his passing.

Survivors include his mom, Julie Krell of N. Olmsted, Ohio; two brothers, Jack Krell and his wife, Darlene, of Brooksville, Fla., and Art Krell of the Florida Keys; Tom's wife, Joan, and two daughters, Kali and Maya, who reside in Crozet.

A loving devotee of His Holiness Sri Swami Satchidananda Maharaj, Tom received initiation as a monk into the holy order of sannyas in 1975, dedicating his life to the selfless service of others.

His marriage in 1984 changed the form, but not the essence, of his commitment to selfless service.

Tom continued to serve both his family and the greater community through his work in computer support for ITC at UVa.

Tom was celebrating a beautiful autumn afternoon with his motorcycle when he changed planes.

His wife and daughters invite everyone to come celebrate his life in a reception from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Thomas Jefferson Unitarian Church on 717 Rugby Rd. A memorial sevice will take place at 6 p.m. following the reception, and at 11 a.m. Sunday at Satchidananda Ashram, Yogaville, in Buckingham.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Light of Truth Universal Shrine (LOTUS) at Yogaville.

Guy Cecil Cook

Guy Cecil Cook, 75, of Martinsville, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, at Memorial Hospital, Martinsville.

He was born on July 15, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, to the late Tom Cook and Parthenia Cook.

Mr. Cook retired from the American Furniture Co. Cabinet Department after 25 years of service. He was originally a member of the Mt. Olivet Apostolic Church until he moved his membership to Reach Out Apostolic Tabernacle Church.

In addition to his parents Mr. Cook was preceded in death by one sister, Ethel C. Wade; and three brothers, Richard Cook, Coleman Cook, and Willie Cook.

He is survived by his wife, Elbert T. Cook of Martinsville; three daughters, Lois C. Hall of Martinsville, Cecil C. Holland of Martinsville, and Carol C. Martin and husband, Charles, of Charlottesville, one brother, Charlie Cook of Martinsville; and five grandchildren.

A visitation will take place from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Reach Out Apostolic Tabernacle Church and at other times at the home of his Bishop Lorenzo and Lois Hall, 80 Pasadena Knoll, Martinsville.

A funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Reach Out Apostolic Tabernacle Church with Bishop Lorenzo Hall officiating. Interment icon will take place in Carver Memorial Gardens.

Sanfield-Miller Funeral Home, Martinsville, is in charge of arrangements.

Lorraine C. Cooper

Funeral services for Lorraine C. Cooper will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday morning at Preddy Funeral Chapel in Orange, with interment in Culpeper National cemetery with full military honors conducted by American Legion Post No. 330, and VFW Post No. 2524, both of Culpeper. The Rev. Wayne Goff and the Rev. Lynn Wilbur will officiate.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Andrew A. Dondero

Andrew Anthony Dondero, 76, of Oakland Farm, Boyd Tavern, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at his home following an extended illness. He was born Sept. 22, 1926, in Midvale, N.J., son of John and Louise Dondero.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne of Oakland Farm; two sons and their wives, Andrew and Hope Dondero, of Richmond, and James and Mary Dondero, of Durham, N.C.; three grandchildren, Margaret, Elizabeth, and John Dondero, of Durham, N.C.; and one brother, Austin Dondero of Patterson, N.J.

He graduated from the University of Virginia with a bachelor's of Science in Electrical Engineering. Early in his career, he was part of the team from Reaction Motors, Inc., which developed the XLR-11, a rocket engine that powered the world's first supersonic aircraft. Together with his wife, he later operated Oakland School in Boyd Tavern for 25 years.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Grace Episcopal Church, Cismont.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Andrew A. Dondero Memorial Fund, Oakland School, Keswick, Va. 22947.

Hill & Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Carroll Wayne Eppard

Caroll Wayne Eppard Sr. went to be with the lord Friday Nov. 1, 2002. He was born in Albemarle County on March 10, 1945.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Henry Kelly Eppard Sr. and Emily Wood Eppard, and his first wife Janice Salmon Eppard.

Surviving him are his wife of 35 years, Elizabeth "Liz" Seiler Eppard; two sons, C. Wayne Eppard (U.S. Navy), and Charles W. "Chuck" Eppard; one daughter, Karen Eppard Brown, and her husband, William; two brothers, H. Kelly Eppard Jr. and his wife, Betty, all of Albemarle County, and Paul Leon Eppard, and his wife, Vickie of Buena Vista; three grandchildren; four nieces and nephews, and many friends and extended family.

Carroll was in the U.S. Navy from 1964 to 1967. He was employed for the last 35 years as a service techincian for the company now known as Ikon Office Solutions. Other than his love of family and friends, his love of music was a predominant factor in his life.

He leaves behind an extended church family at Mount Eagle Baptist Church, where he was a member for the majority of his life.

Family night will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Hill & Wood Funeral Home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Eagle Baptist Church with the Rev. Sidney E. Craig officiating, with interment to follow in the church cemetery.

The family wishes that in leau of flowers, contributions be made to Mount Eagle Baptist Music Fund 2419 Buck Island Road, Charlottesville, Va. 22902.

Hill & Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
