Rita McHugh Evans
Rita McHugh Evans, 89, of Keswick, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at her home. She was born Aug. 5, 1913, in New York City, the daughter of the late Thomas and Rose Connelly McHugh.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Daniel W. Evans, and two brothers, George McHugh and Francis J. McHugh.
Survivors include a stepson, the Rev. Daniel Evans, and a niece, Judith M. Simpson.
In the early 1960s, Rita moved to Keswick from Connecticut. She was a lover of horse racing and bred some winners, whom she raced in America and Ireland. Rita also loved music and sponsored the Rita Evans Youth Orchestra.
She was a member of the National Thoroughbred Owners' Association, the New York Racing Association, the Maryland Track Association, the Keswick Garden Club, Saratoga Reading Room, Keswick Hunt Club, Keswick Country Club, and the Greencroft Club.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at Rita's home, Merrie Mill Farm, Route 22. A time of reflection will be held at 4 p.m.
Rita was a strong supporter of Shelter for Help in Emergency (SHE).

Madelyn Harris Jones
Madelyn Harris Jones went to be with her Lord Friday Nov. 1, 2002.
She was preceded in death by her loving son, Richard Swift.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Retired Master Sergeant USAF, Robert W. Jones; her five daughters, Catherine Marie Washington, Deborah S. Isler of Richmond, Brenda J. Gilliam of Herndon, Erica R. Blackman of Woodbridge, and Darlene E. Vance of Orlando, Fla.; her two sons, George R. Swift of Baltimore, and Robert W. Jones Jr. of Bristow; three sons-in-law, John Gilliam, James Isler, Ricky Vance, and amongst them one devoted son-in-law, Eric Blackman Sr.; two daughters-in-law, Glenda Jordan of Baltimore, and Margaret Jones; 15 Grandchildren, Cheryl Bishop, Bridget Horne, Johnnie Jones Jr., Morgan Jones of Richmond, Tarsha Swift, Dudley Jorday, Dana Jordan or Baltimore, Crystal Thomas of Okanowa, Japan, Emanuel N. Jackson of Woodbridge, Eric Blackman of Woodbridge, Jacqueline Vance of Orlando, Fla., Jessica Jones of Bristow, Candace Jones of Bristow, Ashley Gilliam of Herndon, and Richard D. Swift of Lakeridge; three devoted Grandson-in-laws, David Bishop Sr., David Horne Sr., and Anthony King; six great-grandchildren, Steffen Vaughn, Raeshaun and Raschad Jones, Ananda Jones, David Bishop Jr., and Mckenzie Jones of Richmond; three sisters, Claudine Swift, Alice Ford, ans Pearl Swift of Charlottesville; five brothers-in-law, Bill Ford, Roger Jones of New Jersey, Phillip and Nelson Jones of Charlottesville, James Jones of Cleveland, four Sisters-in-law, Varnetta, Roberta, and Sadie Jones of Charlottesville, and Colleen Jones of New Jersey; two dearly devoted friends, Cornelia Swift of Charlottesville, and Ella Fowler of Richmond; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and close friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Wednesday at Pilgrim baptist Church with the Rev. R. A. Johnson officiating. Interment
will follow at Oakwood cemetery.

A Mass of the Resurrection for James Vincent Murray will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Interment
will follow in Monticello Memory Gardens.

A funeral service for Anthony Edward Yancey will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Chapel at Preddy's Funeral Home, with Pastor Mort Robson and the Rev. John Farrar officiating. Interment
will follow in Mt. Horeb United Methodist cemetery, Gordonsville.
Pallbearers will be Chuck Clatterbuck, Faron Smith, Fletcher Raines, Manie Stadler, Troy Terrell, Andre Chandler, and Pierre Poindexter. Honorary pallbearer will be his brother, Jonathan.

Ruth Ann Anderson
Ruth Ann Elizabeth Anderson, 50, of Charlottesville and formerly of Bremo Bluff, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Jonathan J. Breeden
Jonathan Jermaine "Maine" Breeden, 23, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002.
Born Sept 12, 1979, in Charlottesville, he was the son of Bonnie L. Breeden and the late Thomas Connely.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a brother, Shawn; a son, Jermaine Trejeon Breeden, whom was loved very much by his dad; his mother, Erika Anders; a niece, Katelyn Elizabeth Breeden of Charlottesville; Molly, his adopted sister he always wanted; his foster parents, Carl and Karen; and a number of extended family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Hill & Wood Chapel with the Rev. Louie Carr officiating. Interment
will be private.

Alvin R. Hicks
Alvin R. Hicks, 53, of Charlottesville, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
He was the son of Otis Hicks and the late Pauline Hicks.
He leaves to cherish his memory one daughter, Shawn Briggs of Crewe; four brothers, Melvin Hicks of Charlottesville, Antonio Hicks of Charlotte, N.C., and Eugene and Timothy Hicks, both of Philadelphia; two sisters, Geraldine Williams of Durham, N.C., and Joyce Lassiter of Hampton; four grandchildren; and a host of other beloved relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Monday Dec. 23, 2002, at Zion Baptist Church. Interment
followed at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at Culpeper National cemetery.

A memorial service celebrating Dr. H. Gordon Larew's life will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Park Street, with Dr. Joel Jenkins officiating.

R. Melvin Johns
R. Melvin "Swink" Johns, 91, of Lovingston, died peacefully Monday afternoon, Dec. 30, 2002, at the Lovingston Health Care Center with his family by his side.
Born Jan. 29, 1911, in Nelson County on the Oak Ridge Estate, he was a son of the late Herbert Walker Johns and Cynthia Tyree Johns.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth "Liz" Giles Johns of Feb. 15, 1996.
Swink as his family and friends knew him, was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Lovingston until his illness, was raised on the Oak Ridge Estate where he was employed for many years and met and married
his late wife Liz. He was later employed by Lea Brothers Motor Company of Lovingston and served as Justice of the Peace in Nelson County for over 20 years. He was a charter member of the Lovingston Volunteer Fire Department, a member of Fleetwood Harmony Masonic Lodge No. 92, AF & AM of Lovingston and after retirement worked with and for Drumhellers Orchards and Bailey Spencer Hardware of Lovingston for enjoyment rather than employment.
He is survived by his daughters, Ann J. Hale of Lovingston, Mary Frances Houchens and her husband, Richard of Lovingston; two granddaughters, Sharon H. Smith of Front Royal and Elizabeth H. Bradley of Roseland; two grandsons, Barry N. Hale of Virginia Beach and Richard P. Houchens Jr. of Lovingston; five great-grandchildren; three nephews; and one niece.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church in Lovingston with the Rev. John P. Campbell officiating. Interment
will be in the Woodland Memorial cemetery at Colleen.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and all other times at the family residence.

Ida Lawson
Ida Louise Jackson Lawson, departed this life on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at the family home in Waynesboro.
She was born Jan. 8, 1942, in Orange County, the daughter of the late Lessie Battle of Greenwood, and the late Buck Jackson of Washington, D.C.
Ida was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Greenwood where she was active as the Superintendent of the Sunday school and teacher; assistant choir director for the youth; and always a willing volunteer for various other duties in the church. She was devoted and committed not only to her children but to all the children in the community as well. She was a Girl Scout troop leader for many years and a volunteer on several other community and school boards. She retired from the University of Virginia in 1999, after 20 years of service where she received accommodations and awards.
In 1997, she received the University of Virginia Employee of the Year award in the Housing Division.
She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Ms. Martha Lawson of Grottoes, Mrs. Donna Lawson Meadows and her husband, Samuel of Waynesboro, and Ms. Jacqueline Lawson of Stuarts Draft and her fiance', George Obie; one sister, Glenis Green of Charlottesville; ten grandchildren, Austin, Joshua, Deanna, Diondra, Benjamin, Danelle, Desmond, Denai, Paul and Aja all of Waynesboro; one great-grandchild, Amil; one aunt, Elnora Jackson; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and close friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Greenwood with the Rev. Kathleen Burnett officiating. Interment
will follow at Riverview cemetery in Waynesboro.

Barbara P. Michael
Barbara Puryear Michael of Charlottesville died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, in her sleep at her home.
"Betty" Michael was born 77 years ago, July 27, 1925, in Athens, Ga., to William Constantine Puryear and Eddie Williams Puryear.
For the last 56 years she was married
to James Harry Michael Jr. of Charlottesville.
In addition to Judge Michael, she is survived by two daughters, as son-in-law, and two grandsons, Victoria von der Au Michael of Richmond, and Jarrett Michael Stephens and R. Lee Stephens Jr. and their sons, Robert Lee Stephens III and James Harry Michael Stephens of Irvington.
Mrs. Michael was a member of Farmington Country Club. She attended the University of Georgia before going to work for the Navy Department in World War II. The war interrupted her Olympic diving ambitions when the 1940 games were canceled. She enjoyed playing golf and boating with her family and friends.
Funeral services will take place at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 W. High St., Charlottesville, with the Rev. Jeffrey Fishwick presiding. Immediately following, Mrs. Michael will be interred in Monticello Memory Gardens.

Harold M. Milton
Harold Moore Milton, 80, of Crozet, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at a local nursing home after a long illness.
He was born Oct. 12, 1922, in Brookneal, to the late Alvin Clark Milton and Mary Neal Milton.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Garland Milton, a World War II casualty, and the Rev. Byron Milton.
He is survived by his wife, Addie Gentry Milton of Crozet; one step-daughter, Mary Jane Gentry and her husband, Preston of Crozet; one step-son, William W. Gentry and his wife, Lisa of Mechanicsville; two sisters, Evenly Kuykendall of Cumberland, Md., and Lacy Scott of Brookneal; one brother, Herbert Milton of Brookneal; three grandchildren, Ashley Gentry of Crozet, Brandon Gentry and Joe Gentry of Mechanicsville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He spent his early years in Brookneal as an active member of the Roanoke Presbyterian Church. He graduated from Randolph Henry High School in 1940.
He was employed by the C/O Railroad as an agent. After leaving the railroad he was engaged in farming in Highland County.
Mr. Milton was an Alzheimer's patient and has had wonderful care at the Gibson Home for Adults on Blue Ridge Avenue in Crozet for the past three years. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at the Gibson home for Adults for their loving care.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Crozet Baptist Church. Interment
will follow at the Rockgate cemetery with the Rev. David Collier officiating.
Following the burial service the family and friends are asked to meet at the church for refreshments and visitation.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Anderson Funeral Home.
