Layton R. McCann
Layton Revere McCann, 72, of Charlottesville, died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at a local hospital, after a courageous two year battle with cancer.
Born January 27, 1931, in North Carolina, he was the son of the late Claude V. and Etta Snead McCann. A brother, Claude "Hank" McCann; and two sisters, Dorothy M. Bickers and Robinelle M. Harbottle, also preceded him in death.
He served in the U.S. Navy and was an active member and deacon of Broadus Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Janice G. McCann; a daughter, Sharon M. Smalley and her husband, Ray of Richmond; a son, Marc A. McCann; a daughter-in-law, Janet A. McCann; five sisters, Louise M. Tomlin, Georgia M. Leake, Frances "Polly" Gibson, and Jacqueline M. Russell, and Rosa M. Bridges and her husband, Ezra; a brother, Samuel R. McCann and his wife, Jean, all of Charlottesville; four grandchildren, Kathryn R. Smalley, Sarah E. Smalley, Michael Layton McCann and Christopher Alan McCann; a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
A service will held at 1 p.m. Monday at Broadus Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Eric Howell and the Rev. Robert Wheeler officiating. Interment
will be private.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Gordon Morris and Dr. William Hammond and the staff of the ICU and South 7 of Martha Jefferson Hospital for their compassionate care and loving support.

Richard P. Saunders
Richard Palmer Saunders, 76, of Charlottesville, died Friday, March 14, 2003, at his home.
Born August 17, 1926, to the late Aubrey R. Saunders Sr., and Fannie Mae Palmer. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Mildred S. Wood.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Nancy Wood Saunders; two sons, Richard L. Saunders and his wife, Betty, of Barboursville, and Ronald K. Saunders of Palmyra; two brothers, Aubrey R. Saunders, Jr., and James F. Saunders, both of Charlottesville; and a grand daughter Valerie K. Saunders.
Mr. Saunders attended Lane High School. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. He dedicated 46 years of his life working as a shop foreman at Barnes Lumber Company. Mr. Saunders was also a member of the Hinton Ave. United Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Hill & Wood Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hinton Avenue United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Edward Hopkins officiating. Interment
will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens.

Golden B. Shelton
Golden Bernell Shelton, 65, died Friday, March 14, 2003, at his home in Louisa.
He was the son of the late Littie and Flemming Shelton. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Clyde Shelton; a sister, Nannie Easton; and one granddaughter, Cherise Robinson.
Golden is survived by a son, Golden D. Shelton; two brothers, Flemming and Ivor Shelton; and two sisters, Beulah Morris and Herma Harrison; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Travelers Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gilbert Bates officiating.
Remains may be viewed at the church from 1 to 2 p.m.

Barbara Belle Stearns
Barbara Belle Stearns, 77, of Crozet, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, in her home.
She was a very special person and will always be remembered for her warm, loving nature, and caring spirit.
She was born Dec. 5, 1925, in Boston, Mass. She was preceded in death by her loving son, Ken Stearns.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Kenney, and son-in-law, Michael Kenney, of Crozet; a son, Robert Stearns of Providence, R.I.; her twin brother, Marvin Smith and his wife, Marcy, of Oguinquit, Maine; brother, "Buzz" Smith and his wife, Madeline of Tamerac, Fla.; and the joys of her life, her grandsons, Ethan and Mathew Kenney; and a host of other nieces, nephews and friends.
Family and friends were gathered around her at the time of her birth into the spiritual world.
The family would like to thank the Hospice of the Piedmont and especially Sheila, for her devoted service.
Mildred F. Giles
Mildred Ferguson Giles, 88, of Charlottesville, died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at a local nursing home.
Born May 8, 1914, to the late Nathaniel Howard and Nettie Shields Ferguson. Preceding her in death also was her husband, Franklin Bryce Giles.
She is survived by one son, Harry N. Giles and his wife, Margaret, of Arlington; one sister, Gladys Wall, of Richmond; two sister-in-laws, Dorothy Kilmarx and Ada Clem, both of Charlottesville; two grandchildren, William Giles and Victory Bulloch, of Texas.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hill & Wood Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be held at 12 p.m. Thursday at Monticello Memory Gardens.

Willard Hall
Willard "Bill" Hall, 82, of Charlottesville, died Friday, March 14, 2003, at a local hospital.
He is survived by one daughter, Cornelia Gibson and her husband, James Sr., of Charlottesville; and one son, William Hall; one brother, Champ Hall, of Greenbelt, Md.; and two sisters, Mamie Powell and her husband, Floyd, and Julia Knight, all of Charlottesville. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Gary "Wade" Thomas; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Author, Charlie, and Elmer Hall; and one sister, Millie Thomas.

James Franklin Hewitt, 71, of 952 Augusta Farms Road, died Sunday, March 16, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

James C. Hyman Sr.
James C. Hyman Sr., 76, of Charlottesville, entered into eternal rest Thursday, March 13, 2003, at a local health care center.
He was the son of the late Harry and Evora Hyman.
He leaves to cherish his memory, a loving and devoted wife, Clara Hyman; one son, James C. Hyman Jr., of Philadelphia; four daughters, Mariah Powell, Ethel Edmonds, Mary Wade, all of Wash. D.C., and Emma Tillery, of Mount Ranier, Md.; four brothers, Ernest and William Shields, both of Philadelphia, Albert Hyman, of Georgia, Lee Curtis Shields, of Scotland, N.C.; three sisters, Clementine Pittman, Wyoming Brown, and Addie Harris, all of Philadelphia; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Calvin Bolden officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.

Helen W. Kirtley
Helen Whitmore Kirtley, 85, died Saturday, March 15, 2003, in Charlottesville.
She was the wife of W.J. Kirtley Jr., Colthurst Farm, Charlottesville.
She was born June 2, 1917, in Richmond and was the daughter of Alphonso Beale Whitmore and Julia Robinson Whitmore.
She is survived by her identical twin, Louise Whitmore Williams, of Richmond; and her family; three children, Patricia Henderson Kirtley of Forest; Wally Kirtley and his wife, Karla, of Ivy; and Bruce Kirtley, of Crozet, and his wife, Bonnie. Additional survivors include six grandchildren, Tyler Nandine of Starrs, Conn.; John Kampmann of Los Angeles, Calif.; Ashley Gonzales of Richmond; Kendall Kirtley, Christopher Kirtley and Whit Kirtley, all of Charlottesville.
Helen Kirtley’s surviving great- grandchildren include, Jacob, Alexander and David Maffio, of Starrs, Conn.; and Dylan Gonzales of Richmond; a niece, Susan Luckenbach and her husband, Ray.
She was lovingly cared for by Annie Walker, her daughters, Cathy and Connie and staff and Michelle Waller-Stevens.
Helen Whitmore Kirtley, was known to her family as a generous spirit, inspiration to others, a loving being who was devoted to her family, a lover of life and a lover of humanity.
In the community of Charlottesville she was seen as a successful pioneer businesswoman in the field of real estate and previously owned her own realty company, Kirtley Realty Company.
Her family and friends come together to celebrate her life and to offer gratitude for her loving presence in their lives.

Elizabeth B. Lillard
Elizabeth Byrd Brockman Lillard "Betty, " 87, of Gordonsville, died Sunday, March 16, 2003, at the Orange County Nursing Home.
Born February 12, 1916, in Orange. She was the daughter of the late W.A. Brockman Sr., and the late Alice B. Brockman. Her husband was the late Robert C. Lillard.
She was a retired telephone operator for the C&P Telephone Company and a member of the Macadonia Christian Church. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Gordonsville Fire Company and a member of the Macadonia Christian Church.
She is survived by two brothers, W.A. Brockman Jr., and his wife, Elizabeth Brockman, of Orange, and John Brockman and his wife, Ann Brockman, of West Point; one sister, Kate Simms, of Lahore; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Louise Mack.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Maplewood cemetery, Gordonsville. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Kathryn Hull.
