Lillian R. Cary
Lillian R. Cary, 78, of Richmond, Va., formerly of Charlottesville, died Monday, March 17, 2003, at Richmond Community Hospital.
She was born in South Hampton County on October 8, 1924, the daughter of the late Robert Mason and Essie Sykes Mason. She was the wife of the late Sylvester Cary. One daughter, Mary Louise Clark preceded her in death.
She retired after 25 years of service as a nurse assistant at Martha Jefferson Hospital. She was devoted to children and provided daycare in her home.
Her survivors include one son, Stonewall Mason of Charlottesville; two daughters, Leslie Johnson and her husband, Frank, of Richmond, Va., and Roberta Fields and her husband, Joanthan of Charlottesville; two brothers, William Mason and his wife, Lisa, of Charlotte, N.C., and Ernest Mason and his wife, Nancy of Richmond, Va.; five sisters, Thelma Brinkley of Hampton, Va., Katherine Wallace of Newport News, Va., Alice Walsh of Sanford, Fla., Maurice Covington of Taylor, S.C. and Mable Stevenson of Richmond, Va.; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 22, 2003, at the Chapel of J.F. Bell Funeral Home with Elder Tyrone Covington officiating. Interment
will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.

Rose B. Christian
Rose Barksdale Christian, passed away Friday, March 14, 2003.
Born in Lynchburg on July 31, 1922, she was the daughter of Dr. Elisha Barksdale and Rosa Mcwane Barksdale.
She graduated from The National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C. She attended Sweet Briar College and was active with the U.S.O. during the second word war.
She was a member of the Va. Garden Club and the Junior League in Lynchburg. She was a Daughter of the American Revolution and the Confederacy. She worked with the Arnold Aerospace Development Center in Tullahoma, Tenn., and was a pioneer in early development of nuclear propulsion and rocket flight. She worked on the NS Savannah and the early Persing missile and Atlas rockets.
She had made her home in Charlottesville over the past 20 years and was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.
She is survived by three sons, Elisha Barksdale Kizer of Philadelphia, Pa., Ben Scott Hall of Lynchburg, and Randolph Croft Hall of Charlottesville; and five grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
The family wishes that in lieu of flowers or memorial that donations be made in her name to the Charlottesville, Albemarle SPCA.
Mildred F. Giles
A graveside service for Mildred Ferguson Giles will be held at 12 p.m. today at Monticello Memory Gardens.

Virginia L. Harris
Virginia Louise Harris, 82, of Charlottesville, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 18, 2003.
Born September 24, 1920, in Albemarle County, daughter of the Roberta Brookman Morris. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Walter H. Staton and George W. Harris; one sister, Ida Brookman Bishop; and four brothers, Jack, Albert, Roy, and Thomas Morris.
Virginia was a beloved friend, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother.
She retired from Frank Ix and Sons after 50 years of loyal service.
Virginia touched many lives during her 82 years.
Survivors include her children, three sons, Shelton S. Staton and his wife, Gail, of Lake Monticello, William H. Staton and his wife, Carol, of Winchester, and Richard Staton and his wife, Jamie, of Sterling, Va.; one daughter, Anne Kemp of Charlottesville; one sister, Ruth Napier of Scottsville; one brother, Lawrence Morris of Scottsville; five grandchildren, Courtney Staton, William Staton Jr., Jeff Kemp, William Ryan Staton and his wife, Diane, and Patricia "Prissy" Ragland Burr and her husband, Scott’ four great-grandchildren, Chad Austin Ragland, Niccole R. Staton, Natasha C. Staton-Hensley, and Sheena Gail Staton; five great-great-grandchildren, Chandler Austin Ragland, Tyler Austin Shaver, Hunter Wayne Hensley, Amber Niccole Davis and Nicholas James; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Virginia was loved and cared for by her son, Shelton and his wife, Gail, for the last several years of her life. Shelton and Gail want everyone to know how very independent, courageous, amazing and beautiful she was as she fought her illness. She always, always had a smile even in her darkest moments. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Virginia also leaves behind her beloved Jack Russell, Sam. Her neighbor and his family have given Sam a loving home, and we wish to thank them.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Monticello Memory Gardens, with Pastor Sidney Craig officiating.

V. Larkin Madison
V. Larkin "Luke" Madison Jr., 68, of Charlottesville, died Monday, March 17, 2003, at his home.
Born September 20, 1934, in Albemarle County, he was the son of the late Vander Larkin and Hazel Birckhead Madison. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Randolph L. Madison; and a sister Ellie V. Powell.
He was a self employed home improvement contractor and former owner of Sandy’s Mart. Mr. Madison was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1028 and VFW Post 1827 as a canteen member.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Sandra Craddock Madison; a son, Vincent Lyle Madison and his wife, Lori of Lake Monticello; two grandsons, Anthony and V.L. Madison; two brothers, Broadus H. Madison of Greene County and Raymond R. Madison of Albemarle County; three sisters; Audrey M. Jones of Greene County, Hilda M. Turner of Charlottesville and Janet M. Mauer of Charlottesville; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
A service will be held 2 p.m., Friday, March 21, 2003, at the First Baptist Church, 735 Park Street, with the Dr. Joel P. Jenkins officiating. Interment
will follow at Riverview cemetery.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Marvin Conley, Mike Madison, Mike Shackelford, Pete Johnson, Jim Banton, and Bill Baber. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Tyler, Hampton Breeding, Ricky Thomas, Jim Maupin and Perry Crickenberger.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hill & Wood Funeral Home and Friday after the services at the VFW Post on River Road.

Elizabeth F. Peters
Elizabeth Fehr Peters died Saturday, March 15, 2003, in Virginia Beach.
She was born on April 29, 1919, in Philadelphia. She attended Springside School and was graduated from Low-Heywood School of Noroton, Conn.
During her life Betty was an artist, a gardener and an avid golfer. She was a member of the All American field hockey team and traveled with the team to South Africa and to Australia. She was a lady of many talents and accomplishments, having written a column for the Philadelphia Inquirer and piloted general aviation aircraft. During World War II she worked for Bendix Aviation and served as a volunteer with the American Red Cross. She was very involved with St. Alban’s Church and the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
She is survived by her husband, Richard; four daughters, Catharine F. Gribbel-Beautyman, of Pittsfield, Mass., Julie Peters of Aspen, Colo., Elizabeth P. Dudley, and Sally P. Du Bose, both of Charlottesville; sons-in-law William Beautyman, E. Alexander Dudley and Charles F. Du Bose; and seven grandchildren.
She will long be remembered for her love of animals, her sense of humor and her zest for life.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Ivy.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Sarah Du Bose Fund, 4042 Ivy Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903, helping hospitalized children and their families at the University of Virginia.

Mrs. Clara E. Wells, widow of the late Clifford E. Wells Sr., formerly of Fork Union, Va., entered eternal rest on Tuesday, March 18, 2003.

"Bay" Wyland
Bernard "Bay" Lewis Wyland Sr., 68, of Scottsville, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Roy Wyland and Lillian Miller Wyland; and three brothers, Herbert L. "Jim" Wyland, Frank Wyland and Earl Wyland.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Wyland; four children, Bernice W. Townsend and her husband, Danny, of Farmville, Bernard L. Wyland Jr., of Charlottesville, Pamela S. Edwards and her husband, Elvis, of Scottsville, and Linda Matthews of Virginia; two sisters, Ruby Tyree and Audrey Pugh and her husband, Eddie, all of Charlottesville; seven grandchildren; and his special companion puppy named "Lucky."
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville, with the Rev. Rudy Ramsey officiating. Interment
will follow at the Dameron Family cemetery, Rt. # 652, Buckingham.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.
William A. Adams
William Alfonzo "Buster" Adams, was born May 26, 1908, to the late Doc and Mary Adams in Fluvanna County. He departed this life Sunday, March 16, 2003.
William was a resident of Fluvanna County for 20 years then left to go to New York City.
He was united in marriage to Dorothy Bonapart in 1930, of that union, three children were born. He was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad and Seven Brothers Storage Company.
William was a faithful member of First Gloris Baptist Church.
He leaves to mourn, his faithful daughter, Juanita Adams Francis of Bronx, N.Y.; a step-son, Larenzo Williams of Queens, N.Y.; one brother, Herbert Adams of Fork Union; one sister, Kathleen Adams of Bronx, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 22, 2003, at noon at Thessalonia Baptist Church cemetery. Interment
will immediately follow.

Richard H. Aulebach
Richard H. Aulebach, 74, of Ivy, Va., died suddenly at his home on Wednesday, March 19, 2003.
Born in Erie, Pa., on June 30, 1928, to the late Emil and Eugenia Eberle Aulebach.
He graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in New York City, served as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army and was a 1952 graduate of the University of Virginia. Before retiring to Charlottesville, he was a Senior Group Consultant, CLU, for 30 years with the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company in New York City. Rick, a loyal Virginia Cavalier, was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, Co-Founder of the Westchester/Fairfield alumni chapter for the University of Virginia and served as the Club’s President. He also served on the Alumni Board of Managers for seven years, the Virginia Athletics Foundation Board, President of his 1952 class reunion, and President of the Jefferson Society and a member of the Raven Society. Rick was a member of the, American Yacht Club in Rye, New York, Colonnade Club and the Farmington Country Club both in Charlottesville, Va.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Clucas Aulebach of Charlottesville, Va.; his sons, Robert Mitchell Aulebach and his wife, Susan; two grandsons, Craig Robert and Mark William of Charlotte, N.C.; Richard Clayton Aulebach and his wife, Rita Louise; grandson, Richard Clayton Jr.; and granddaughter, Sara Nicole of Columbia, Md.; two daughters, Elisabeth Ann Thompson and her husband, Frank Patrick, of Greenwich, Conn., and Marcia Lee Aulebach of Charlottesville, Va.
A memorial mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 22 2003, at Saint Thomas Aquinas Church in Charlottesville, Va.
