Lillian R. Cary
Lillian R. Cary, 78, of Richmond, Va., formerly of Charlottesville, died Monday, March 17, 2003, at Richmond Community Hospital.
She was born in South Hampton County on October 8, 1924, the daughter of the late Robert Mason and Essie Sykes Mason. She was the wife of the late Sylvester Cary. One daughter, Mary Louise Clark preceded her in death.
She retired after 25 years of service as a nurse assistant at Martha Jefferson Hospital. She was devoted to young people and provided daycare for children in her home.
Her survivors include one son, Stonewall Mason of Charlottesville; two daughters, Leslie Johnson and her husband, Frank, of Richmond, Va., and Roberta Fields and her husband, Jonathan of Charlottesville; two brothers, William Mason and his wife, Lisa, of Charlotte, N.C., and Ernest Mason and his wife, Nancy of Richmond, Va.; five sisters, Thelma Brinkley of Hampton, Va., Katherine Wallace of Newport News, Va., Alice Walsh of Sanford, Fla., Maurice Covington of Taylor, S.C., and Mable Stevenson of Richmond, Va.; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2003, at the Chapel of J.F. Bell Funeral Home with Elder Tyrone Covington officiating. Interment
will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.

Rose B. Christian
Rose Barksdale Christian, passed away Friday, March 14, 2003.
Born in Lynchburg on July 31, 1922, she was the daughter of Dr. Elisha Barksdale and Rosa Mcwane Barksdale.
She graduated from The National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C. She attended Sweet Briar College and was active with the U.S.O. during the second word war.
She was a member of the Va. Garden Club and the Junior League in Lynchburg. She was a Daughter of the American Revolution and the Confederacy. She worked with the Arnold Aerospace Development Center in Tullahoma, Tenn., and was a pioneer in early development of nuclear propulsion and rocket flight. She worked on the NS Savannah and the early Persing missile and Atlas rockets.
She had made her home in Charlottesville over the past 20 years and was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.
She is survived by three sons, Elisha Barksdale Kizer of Philadelphia, Pa., Ben Scott Hall of Lynchburg, and Randolph Croft Hall of Charlottesville; and five grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Rosa Davis
Rosa Jane Buckner Davis, 94, of Barboursville, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, in the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.
She was born October 6, 1908, in Greene County and was a daughter of the late Thomas Buckner and Mollie Wright Buckner. She was married
to the late Chauncey Dovell Davis and was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, Ruckersville.
Mrs. Davis is survived by three daughters, Beauford Hawkins, Elizabeth Smith and Katherine Carey, all of Barboursville; one son, Chauncey D. Davis Jr., of Barboursville; one sister, Lucy Jackson of Washington, D.C.; 14 grandchildren, Gladys, Elvin, Louise, Thomas, Cheryl, Odessa, Ira, Miranda, Artelia, Donnie, Ozella, Paulette, Mark and Danielle, 23 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 24, 2003, at Bethany Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
The Rev. Stanley H. Holmes will officiate. The family will receive friends from 12 to 1 p.m. Monday at the church before the funeral service. Preddy Funeral Home, Gordonsville in charge of arrangements.

John Daniel Vogel Jr., 84, of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at a local hospital.

Clara E. Wells
Clara Elizabeth Haden Wells, widow of the late Clifford E. Wells Sr., was born September 1, 1906, in Fluvanna County, Va., to the late William and Clara Haden. She departed this life peacefully on March 18, 2003.
Clara leaves cherished memories with three sons and two daughters-in-law, Clifford E. Wells Jr., and his wife, L. Cordell, of Richmond, Va., Henry D. Wells and his wife, Elaine, of Richmond, Va., and Charles H. Wells of Covington, Va.; brother and sister-in-law, William J. Hayden and his wife, Katherine of Terre Haute, Ind.; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one niece; Three great-nephews; and a host of cherished cousins and friends.
Her remains rest at the W.S. Watkins & Sons Funeral Home, 2700 North Ave., in Richmond, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Thesselonia Baptist Church in Fluvanna County, Va., with the Rev. James Jackson officiating. Interment
will take place at Grave Hill cemetery.

Caroline V. Boone
Caroline Virginia Boone, 64, of Charlottesville, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at her residence.
Born June 8, 1938, in Elkton, Md., she was the daughter of the late James David and Mary Elizabeth Simpers Lockard.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Samuel Boone.
She is survived by her three sons, Danny Boone and his wife, JoAnne, David Boone, and Michael Boone and his wife, Carin; four sisters, Florence Williams, Mary Walker, Mabel Futty, and Bertha Reedy; two brothers, John Lockard and his wife, Ruth, and Howard Lockard and his wife, Helen; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Boone an avid bingo player at the Ruckersville Fire Hall and bingo was her favorite hobby.
A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, March 24, 2003, at Teague Chapel. Interment
will follow in Riverview cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Teague Funeral Home.

Richard Edwards
Richard H. Edwards, 84, of Charlottesville, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at his residence.
He was born March 18, 1919, in Indianapolis, Ind., the son of the late Ralph Homer and Roberta Schwartz Edwards. He was also preceded in death by a brother, James Edwards; and a sister, Mary Bodenberg.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Edwards; daughter, Lynn Dougherty, both of Charlottesville; one son, Richard H. Edwards, II, and his wife, Karren of Tampa, Fla.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Edwards attended Indiana University, served in the U.S. Airforce, and was a member of the Night Fighters 127, American Legion, and Disciples of Christ Christian Church.
Graveside services will be held Monday, March 24, 2003, at the Washington Park East cemetery in Indianapolis, Ind.

Marie Mullins Smith Helms, 81, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at the Evergreen Nursing Home.
She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother of Stanardsville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William R. and Sarah Mullins, of Haysi; husband, James H. Smith, of Stanardsville, formally of Grundy; sisters, Gay Epling, Bea O’Quinn, Martha Wallace; brothers, Cline, Ellis, and Junior Mullins.
She is survived by her husband, Herman Helms, of Gordonsville; daughters, Brenda Parsons, Kitty Wu, Debbie Wood; sons, Jerry, Ken, Andy, and Jeff Smith; sisters, Neil Bailey, Betty Deal, Liz Cantrell, and Ruby Compton; 22 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Carolyn Dearing McAllen, passed away, Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at Deaconess Billings Clinic.
She was born on January 14, 1937, in Memphis, Tenn., to Gerald and Mary Frances "Bone" Dearing.
She is survived by her three children, Betty Viviano and her husband, John, of Billings, Susan Collins and her husband, Allen, and Bill McAllen, both of Charlottesville, Va.; one brother, Gerald Dearing and his wife, Opal, of Marietta, Ga.; and seven grandchildren.
