Sylvia B. Smith
Sylvia Berry Smith, 93, of Orange, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at the Orange County Nursing Home.
Born July 8, 1909, in Madison County, she was the daughter of the late Walker J. and Neda Weakley Berry. Her husband was the late Estus Oliver Smith. She was also preceded in death by three brothers; and one sister.
She was retired from the American Silk Mill in Orange and a member of the Orange Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Smith Reynolds of Orange and Edith Margaret Bruce of Mechanicsville; four grandchildren, Lynn Evans and her husband, Bill, Terry Bush and her husband, William, Vicki Bruce and her friend, Wayne Knight, and Debbie Kerley; son, Paul; nine great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 24, 2003, at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel of Orange with interment in Graham cemetery. Dr. Stanley Johnson will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today, March 23, 2003, at the Preddy Funeral Home in Orange.
John D. Vogel Jr.
John Daniel Vogel Jr., 84, of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at a local hospital.
He retired as the Head Accountant of the New Mexico State Commission on Alcoholism. He had previously worked for many years as a cashier with the Bank of New Mexico and was active in the Community Theater. He served in the Army Air Corps and was a Veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Daniel Vogel Sr., and Mary Elizabeth Ahearn Vogel; two sons, Eric Vogel and David Vogel, both of Albuquerque, N.M.
He is survived by three daughters, Gretchen Patterson of Charlottesville, Lisa Gorgone and her husband, David, Blake French and her husband, Bruce, all of Albuquerque, N.M.; one son, Byrnes Vogel and his wife, Anna, of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Marion Hartung and her husband, William, of Ravenna, Ohio, and Frances Patterson of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Laura Vogel of Albuquerque, N.M.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be private and the family requests that contributions be made to the Charlottesville Albemarle Senior Center, 1180 Pepsi Place, Charlottesville, Va. 22901.

Elizabeth D. Weaver
Elizabeth Daniel Weaver, 88, of Madison, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Born November, 28, 1914, in Madison County, she was the daughter of the late Byrd Daniel and the late Clara Willis Daniel. Her husband was the late Marvin Floyd Weaver.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Norma Jean Weaver Lamb; and a grandson, Troy Benjamin Weaver.
Mrs. Weaver was a member of the Rochelle Christian Church. A graduate of James Madison University and taught school in Madison County for 38 years.
She is survived by one son, Benjamin Floyd Weaver and his wife, Bonnie, of Lynchburg; two brothers, Ashby Daniel, of Shelby and Willis Booten Daniel, of Orange; two sisters, Ellen Daniel Hawkins and Mary Lou Daniel Deane, both of Shelby; five grandchildren, Paul Landon Weaver, Lohry Elizabeth Weaver, Shannon Coryn Lamb, Jaime Elizabeth Lamb Sheads and her husband, Wally, and Joshus Lewis Earl Lamb; three great-grandchildren, Samantha, Blake and Cameron Sheads; and two special nieces, Paula Deane and Donna Utz.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2003, in the Rochelle Christian Church cemetery conducted by the Rev. Ken Morton and Shirley Estes.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, March 24, at the Preddy Funeral Chapel, Madison, Va.

Funeral services for Rosa Jane Buckner Davis, will be held at 1 p.m. today, March 24, 2003, at Bethany Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Stanley H. Holmes will officiate.

Mary Hatcher
Mary Louise Stevens Hatcher, 95, of Lynchburg, passed away Sunday morning, March 23, 2003, at the Lynchburg General Hospital.
She was born Oct. 29, 1907, in Lovingston in Nelson County, a daughter of the late Marshall Hill Stevens and Lavinia Burnett Stevens. She was also the widow of Larney W. Hatcher and was also preceded in death by her sisters, Gladys Jones Akers and Hazel Stevens Wright; and her nephew, Marshall Stevens Jones.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Court Street, Lynchburg and a former member of the Former Lovingston Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Lovingston High School.
She is survived by her sister, Virginia Stevens Mays and her husband, Thurmand, of Altavista; a nephew, T. Michael Mays of Altavista; and a niece, Margaret Jones Watts and her husband, Nelson, of Madison Heights; two great-nieces, Melenie Srsie and Paula Stinnette; two great-nephews, Justin Mays and Curtis Watts; a number of great-great-nieces and nephews; and a great-great-great-nephew.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at Calvary Baptist Church in Lovingston, with the Rev. John P. Campbell officiating. Interment
will be in the Mountain Cove cemetery near Lovingston.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Jean B. Lancaster
Jean Butler Lancaster, 75, died Sunday, March 23, 2003, after an enduring sickness.
She was born in Winchester, Va., daughter of the late Robert R. and Hilda Buncutter Butler. She was preceded in death by her brother, Bobby.
She was a graduate of Mary Washington College and taught school in Arlington and Henrico County, Va., retiring in 1986.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Morton Holladay Lancaster; her four children, Jean Caster Collier and her husband, John, of Charlottesville, Morton H. Lancaster Jr., Elizabeth Lancaster Siewers and her husband, Fred, and Robert Douglas Lancaster and his wife, Terri, all of Richmond; her brothers, Douglas, John, Benjamin and Stephen, all of Winchester, Va.; her sisters, Joan Burton of Richmond, Joyce Allen of Coalton, W. Va., Martha Lebowitz of Allentown, Pa., and Susan Sullivan of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Rachel, Will, Katie and Emma Siewers, Ashley Collier and Sarah and Grace Lancaster.
Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home’s Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday.
A memorial service will be held at 12 noon Tuesday at Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church.

Beauregard Payne Jr.
Beauregard "Beau" Payne Jr., of Waynesboro, Va., died Friday, March 21, 2003.
He was born July 14, 1955, in Greensboro, N.C., son of Theresa Payne and the late Beauregard "Beau" Payne Sr.
He graduated from the Charlottesville City Schools and attended Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and Clark College in Atlanta, Ga. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy and served aboard the USS Ranger.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved mother, Theresa Payne of Charlottesville, Va.; his son Bryant Witcher of Charlottesville, Va.; his grandmother, Stella R. Tonsler of Dayton, Ohio; three uncles, Grafton S. Payne and his wife, Bernice, of Dayton, Ohio, Garvin Tonsler and his wife, Marcia, of Atlanta, Ga., and Charlie Preston and his wife, Dolores, of Baltimore, Md.; three aunts, June Bailey and her husband, James, of Ewing, N.J., Fredina Johnson and Felecia Rowe of Dayton, Ohio; and loving cousins and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at Holy Comforter Catholic Church, 208 Jefferson Street East with Father Murphy officiating. Interment
will follow at Oakwood cemetery.

Ida E. Pillois
Ida Elvaree Pillois, 87, of Scottsville, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville.
She was born May 21, 1915, daughter of Elzie and Ostrilla Wiggins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Louis V. Pillois; one son, Louis E. Pillois; and one daughter, Barbara Ann Macon.
She is survived by four children, Martha Sue Kushner of Maryland, Dicky Pillois of Buckingham, Reggie Pillois of Scottsville and Ida Mae Friend of Oklahoma; one sister, Anna Bell Womack of North Carolina; numerous grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Pillois was retired from the Food Service Department of Blue Ridge Sanitorium, Charlottesville.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, March 24, at Centenary United Methodist Church cemetery, Centenary.
There are no viewing hours scheduled.
