John B. Anthony Jr.
John Benjamin Anthony Jr. died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at home in Ajijic, Mexico, of Brain Cancer.
He would have been 82 Feb. 7, 2003. He was born to John Benjamin Anthony and Ruth Burnley Anthony in Charlottesville.
After graduating from the University of Virginia in 1943, with a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, he joined the Navy to serve as a U.S. Officer in World War II. During the years 1953 to 1946, he commanded the ship U.S.S. LST 974 in the South Pacific.
For 31 years he worked as a manufacturer's representative of high fidelity equipment in Metropolitan, N.Y. After establishing what would become a legendary reputation for integrity in business, he expanded his company to become a world wide presence in the field of audio sales.
After retiring in 1991, and moving to Mexico in 1996, John Anthony served as president of the Lomas de Ajijic Association for two terms.
He is survived by his wife, Diana F. Anthony of Ajijic, Mexico; his sister, Nell Burnley McFarland of Charlottesville; his daughter, Jacqueline Ruth Anthony Millan of Ridgefield, Conn.; his stepdaughters, Leslie Roberson of Charlotte, N.C., and Cynthia Daniels of Easthampton, N.Y.; one granddaughter, Melissa; and one step-grandson, Christopher.

Carolyn Baker
Carolyn Baker, 88, of Palmyra, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, in the University of Virginia Medical Center.
She was born March 18, 1914, in Chicago, daughter of the late Stanley and Elsie Hartman Webster.
She is survived by two sons, Robert R. Baker and his wife, Arlene, of Palmyra, and David W. Baker and his wife, Judy, of Rockford, Ill.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at a later date in Mt. Hope cemetery in Chicago.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Fluvanna County Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 96, Palmyra, Va.

James M. Crawford
James M. Crawford, 78, a resident of Woodsboro, Texas for over 40 years, passed away Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, in Aransas Pass, Texas.
He was born Jan. 22, 1924, in Yoakum, Texas, to the late Richard and Mary Ann Crawford.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II receiving the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars and one Bronze Arrowhead, and the Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Star.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Crawford of Woodsboro, Texas; two sons, James H. Crawford of Ruckersville and Delbert Webster of Karnes City, Texas; three daughters, Mary Merritt and Mickey Salinas, both of Bayside, Texas, and Debbie Faulkner of Truth Or Consequences, N.M.; two brothers, Harold Crawford and Henry Crawford, both of Francitas, Texas; his sister, Bernice Griffin of Honey Grove, Texas; a grandson Brian Crawford of Ruckersville; granddaughter, Melissa Dorsey of Linden; as well as five other grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Marvin E. Crawford of Charlottesville.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
Gail L. Faris
Gail Lynn Norris Faris, 57, of Charlottesville, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at her home.
Born May 7, 1945, in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of Oscar F. Norris and the late Elna S. Norvell Norris.
She was a member of Cherry Avenue Christian Church, as well as a member of the Thelma Carter Circle.
In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband, Roscoe G. Faris, and her children, Donald H. Faris, Drena L. Faris and Heather L. Faris, all of Charlottesville.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Cherry Avenue Christian Church, with Mr. Harv Ayers officiating. Interment
will follow in Mooreland Baptist Church cemetery.

Virginia Lee Johnson
Virginia Lee Johnson, 82, of Orange, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at the Orange County Nursing Home.
She was born Jan. 13, 1920, in Madison County, the daughter of the late Samuel Talbot Johnson and Ruth Frances Carpenter Johnson.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Edward Johnson and Samuel Talbot Johnson Jr.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by one sister, Frances Colvin of Orange; six nephews; four nieces; and numerous cousins.
She was a retired bookkeeper at the Settle Tire Company, a member of the Professional Business Women's Association and the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel, Orange, with the Rev. David Knighton officiating. Interment
will be held in the Graham cemetery in Orange.

Katie W. Kavounas
Katie Werner Kavounas, 91, of Allentown, Pa., died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Phoebe Home of Allentown.
She was born in Nurenberg, Germany to the late Herman Werner and the late Amelia Stenz Werner.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stelios A. Kavounas.
She is survived by her four sons, Rudolph C. Walenta of Reiffton, Pa., Alexander H. Kavounas of Allentown, Pa., Nicholas A. Kavounas of Allentown, Pa., and Thomas E. Kavounas of Charlottesville; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Services will be announced at a later date at the convenience of the family.

James Leroy Mills, 54, of Rochelle, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Born March 7, 1948, in Harmans, Md., he was the son of the late Willie Mills.
He is survived by his mother, Margaret Yowell Mills of Glenn Burnie, Md.; his wife, Gladys Victoria "Vickie" Mills of Rochelle; a daughter, Tammy Mills Blakenbaker of Madison; three sons, Jerry Mills of Madison, Mark Mills of Madison, and Bryan Mills of Rochelle; seven grandchildren, Amanda Huston, Amber Mills, Austin Mills, Abie Mills, Christopher Mills, Casey Mills, and Logan Mills; three brothers, Sonny Mills of Maryland, John Mills of Lake Monticello, and Philip Mills of Delaware; and five sisters, Martha Patterson of Bowie, Md., Mary Mills of Glenn Burnie, Md., Shirley Edwards of Severn, Md., Lisa Mills of Maryland, and Virginia McDaniel of Elizabeth City, N.C.
He was a building contractor by trade and a Marine veteran of the Vietnam Conflict.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday in the family cemetery on Rt. 620, Rochelle, Va., with the Pastor Steve Horseapple officiating.

Lewis P. Armstrong
Lewis P. Armstrong, DDS, 49, of Culpeper, died suddenly Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003.
He was born Jan. 21, 1953, in Richmond to Dr. Thomas Weedon Armstrong Jr. and Lucille Lewis Armstrong.
Lewis was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Richmond where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity and served on the honor council. He graduated from the Medical College of Virginia Dental School in 1978.
He joined the dental practice of his father after graduation and practiced with him for ten years. At that time, his father retired and he took over his father's practice. He continued to practice dentistry until the time of his death.
Lewis was an active member and Elder of the Culpeper Presbyterian Church. He was an active member of the Rotary Club of Culpeper for 18 years and was named a Paul Harris Fellow. He also served on the board of Second Bank & Trust for many years, and he was past chairman of the Culpeper chapter of the American Cancer Society.
In addition to his parents, Lewis is survived by his wife, Mollie Moore Armstrong; two sons, Kenneth Weber Armstrong and Bradley Parr Armstrong; his brother, Thomas Weedon Armstrong III and his wife, Marie; his sisters, Maryan Armstrong Kearney and her husband, Timothy, and Elizabeth Armstrong Spencer and her husband, Dave; a niece; and six nephews.
Lewis was preceded in death by his first wife, Kyle Lovett Armstrong.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. this evening at Found & Sons Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Culpeper Baptist Church, with the Dr. R. Wayne Bernardo officiating.
Family burial will be private.

Mary Lucille Bryant
Mary Lucille Bryant, 77, of Arrington, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at the Lynchburg Hospital.
Lucille, as most knew her, was born June 30, 1925, in Nelson County, a daughter of the late Samuel B. Bryant and Lola Catherine Wood Bryant.
Lucille was a former employee of the American Cyanamid Plant at Piney River, with more than 25 years of service, and later retired from the Nelson County Health Department with more than 18 years of service.
She was well known throughout Nelson County as a caring and dedicated home healthcare provider and was, likewise, a dedicated caregiver to her sisters, Alma and Georgia.
She was a lifelong, dedicated and devoted member of St. Stephens Baptist Church at Tye River, and served the church and its congregational in many ways.
She is survived by her sisters, Birdie Alma Bryant and Georgia V. Bryant, both of Tye River, and Madeline B. Staples of Amherst; six nieces, Betty, Barbara Ann, Sandra, Keren, Mary Lee and Wilma Lee; seven nephews, Russell, Bobby, Billy, Jerry, jimmy, Morris Lee, Johnny and Roy Jr.; and several great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Nannie B. Proffitt, and six brothers, Clarence, Roy, Theodore, Cecil, Russell and Ernest Bryant.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Bryant Family cemetery at Tye River, with the Rev. Jake Stewart officiating.
Lucille's remains will rest after 4 p.m. today in the Sanctuary of St. Stephens Baptist Church, at which time the family will receive friend until 6 p.m. A brief service will be held at 6 p.m. this evening in the church following the visitation.
The family suggests that memorials take the form of donations to the Roseland Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 39, Roseland, Va., 22967, or St. Stephens Baptist Church, 411, Falling Rock Dr., Amherst, Va. 22975.
